Chimanimani-based Eastern Region Division 1 soccer league outfit Rusitu Tigers secured an emphatic win over Manica Diamonds Juniors this past Saturday courtesy of a blistering long range strike from Ugandan international Okello Moses.
Moses, who once featured in the biggest club competition in Africa, the CAF Champions league during his stint with Djiboutian side Solar Seven Fc shook the nets with a well taken free kick in the 31st minute that gave Manica Diamonds goalkeeper no chance.
The tall gangling defender had another free kick blocked in the 20th minute, an effort that looked most likely to be going to the back of the net.
The well taken goal in the 30th minute was a top up to Kevin Sithole’s header scored in the 22nd minute after poor cross cutting from the young boys.
Speaking to TellZim News Moses who plays as a center back said the team came in with so much confidence and it was a big reward at the end of the day.
“The game was good because we came with confidence that we should pick the three points. That’s why we are always playing as a team, bringing in that fighting spirit and manage to get maximum points. Taking free kicks is my special technique and I always try to benefit the team through that,” said Moses.
Quizzed on his thoughts of Zimbabwean football as compared to football in Uganda, the former Tuskers Fc (Kenya) and Elmerrick Fc (Sudan) defender spoke positively of the local league.
“Football in Zimbabwe is good, everything is good and there is high competition but our target, we want be promoted into the premier league. I came to Zimbabwe with an objective of playing in the top flight but it was not to be and now I’m plying my trade with Rusitu Tigers and we are pushing for promotion,” said Moses.
Rusitu Tigers gaffer Prince Tafirenyika said the players managed to execute the game plan.
“The game was good and our strategy worked. We didn’t want them to play in our own half. We wanted them to play in their half, so it worked. We got the two goals and that was a confidence booster. At first I thought we were not going to score early but it worked out. Moses is one of the best free kick takers for the team and he is very good on that. We will work on the next game as soon as possible. We hope to get a good result,” said Tafirenyika.
Manica Diamonds Juniors have been dismal at home so far.
Before the encounter with Rusitu Tigers they lost 1 nil against local nemesis Mutare City Rovers.
Meanwhile Mutare City Rovers thrashed JM Busha 5 nil at Sakubva stadium. Buffaloes won 3– 1 against Ruwa Fc at Showgrounds. Fc Wangu Mazodze sits at the summit of log with an impressive 16 points from six outings. Zhalala Zhululu, as they are affectionately known in the football circles is yet to taste defeat in the league. Over the weekend, they got the better of visiting Midway FC 2-1.
Ruwa FC sits at the bottom of the table with three points from 6 games, translating to an average of 0.5 point a game.

PAP President Charumbira rallies Africa behind AFCFTA

Brighton Chiseva

MIDRAND – The President of the Pan Africa Council Chief Fortune Charumbira has urged all member states to embrace the tenets of the The African Continental Free Trade Area (AfCFTA) saying its implementation will remove 50 million people from abject poverty.

Currently underway in Midrand, South Africa, on the side-lines of the ongoing Ordinary Session of the Sixth Parliament of the Pan African Parliament (PAP), the two-day workshop is aimed at discussing the African Free Trade Area and to define the role of the PAP in the effective implementation the trade agreement.

Speaking at the AfCFTA workshop official opening, Charumbira said AfCTA will increase Africa’s imports to the outside world as well as increasing intra-Africa trade by more than 100 percent.

He said the topic was not new since independence and what only changed was the terminology and something was not working well, which is the reason why there has not been changes.

“If we implement this, 50million people will escape extreme poverty.  Africa export to the world would grow, and intra-Africa trade will expand by more than 100percent. We knew since we got independence that we needed to trade amongst ourselves but we were not doing that and that is the reason why this workshop has two days while others are only lasting for an hour. We need to see what has been blocking us from getting there,” said Charumbira.

He urged parliamentarians to contribute towards its success saying it was an important topic that is why the workshop has been given two days unlike other programmes which are given a few hours.

“As parliamentarians, we have been told that AfCFTA will bring prosperity to Africa. So our duty now is to establish the bottle necks and impediments towards achieving the Africa we want and then address them because this is the solution to our economic problems,” said Charumbira.

He said it addresses all African problems like unemployment, energy crisis, and fertiliser shortages in Agriculture will be a thing of the past.

Charumbira also said Africa had a challenge of not being proud of themselves and said once they address that problem, Africa will develop.

Speaking at the same event, president of the Africa Business Council Dr. Amany Asfour said if Africa wants to achieve the AFCFTA and the “Africa we want”, there was need for the private sector involvement.

“If we want to realise the African dream, the Africa we want, a prosperous, integrated, physically integrated Africa, we need the role of the private sector. Are we going to trade amongst ourselves when we are still importing goods from China, Dubai and other states?” she said.

She said African governments were supposed to legislate procurement of goods and services and make sure that a certain percentage of the procured goods and services are from African companies.

“One of our advocacy pillars is about having 40 percent of government procurement going to the African private sector, this is how we can empower the African private sector by this policy because it is not possible to have what is found on the African soil outside Africa, that is why we need at least 40 percent,” she said.

She went on to say there was need for investment in the health sector among other investment opportunities which Africa can explore to make sure that it is fully industrialised which she said was the only way to get the African dream a reality.

“AfCTA without industrialisation and investment will remain a dream but to make it happen and you your excellences present wield the power to make it happen. We as the private sector need your guidance. For instance in the health sector, according to WHO, 80 percent of African people are dying from cancer as compared to 24 percent in the west because we are not investing in health. Our people are going to India and other parts of the world to seek medical treatment and all that could end if we have a public-private sector engagement and deliberate on the matter,” she said.

In his presentation at the same workshop, Mohamed Ali who was representing AfCFTA Secretary General, said as an organisation they were happy and were relying on PAP support after which he urged PAP to continue rendering support which he said was key to making the dream a reality.

Advocacy needs realistic, attainable objectives- Budding artists told

TellZim Reporter

Budding artists in Masvingo have been challenged to come up with pieces of work that are realistic and attainable in carrying out their advocacy work if their messages are to have a positive impact on their audience.
Speaking during a music advocacy training workshop for the 17 artists selected by Masvingo Root for Development (Marodo), MyAge Trust Projects Officer Obedience Mazenge urged the youthful artist to make sure they go for effective pieces of work that will have a huge impact on their audience.
“Your work demands you to come up with pieces of work that answer to SMART that are specific, measurable, attainable, realistic and timeous. There is no need for you to waste time, energy and resources hitting around the bushes, just go straight to the point and that is key in advocacy.
“Since we are dealing with challenges affecting the youth of today that is drugs and substance abuse and GBV, we need to identify our key stakeholders that is singling out key government ministries like Youth, Education, Higher education, Health and Home Affairs among others,” said Mazenge.
He also said in order for the music to reach out the correct target, the writer or composer should correctly identify the target audience.
“For you to drive your message home, there is need for you to identify the correct audience. Not everyone is your audience, so avoid involving people who are not necessarily concerned with your line of work.
“Coming to the issue of developing and delivering an advocacy message, you need to come up with strategies that enables effective delivery and those need to be systematic,” added Mazenge.
One of the artists Arthur Madondo said he learnt that advocacy is all about speaking out and creating awareness.
“I have learnt that advocacy is all about creating awareness as well as speaking out against something affecting a particular section of society. I have that as artists we need to identify the real problems and then come up with solutions to those problems.
“We are going to speak on behalf of the community we serve which we feel is voiceless when it comes to challenges affecting their lives. I also got to know of the elements of advocacy that is being able to speak and speak clearly,” said Madondo.
Another trainee artist Rutendo Gumbo vowed to make use of the advocacy skills imparted to them towards the benefit of their communities and the nation at large.
“As part of music advocacy work, we are going to use the skills we got to fight and put to an end the challenges that are affecting our communities. I will try to make sure I provide a voice for the voiceless and help the victims of gender based violence through creating awareness.
“We have been taught how to diagnose the main causes of GBV while at the same time trying to come up with practically workable solutions to such problems,” said Gumbo.
A total of 17 budding artists passed through the auditions by Marodo and were awarded recording contracts for churning out advocacy music.

MURRA expresses concern over ticking Cholera bomb

Branton Matondo

Mutare Resident and Ratepayers Association (MURRA) has raised concerns over the deterioration of sanitation in Sakubva and Mahalape suburbs as Cholera cases increase in the city.
Manicaland has over the past weeks recorded double figures in suspected cholera cases and as of May 10, 2023, six deaths had been recorded.
An increase in confirmed Cholera cases was also recorded, with 46 new confirmed cases.
In an interview with TellZim News MURRA Programmes Director David Mutambirwa said that the state of hygiene in Sakubva and places surrounding the area is deteriorating while at the same time creating a breeding ground for Cholera.
“Sakubva is the oldest suburb in Mutare. When you visit the suburb, you are greeted with perennial running water in areas such as Old Location, Muchena, Maonde, Chinyausunzi, Matida, Chineta, Old Dangare, Zororo, Magregors, NHB and Murapa. Some of the flowing water is dirty with a punching smell. Clean water is also perennially flowing. The lost clean water is disenfranchising the areas where water is not available,” he said.
Mutambirwa also added that hygiene at Mahalape or Body Slam home to over 800 settlers is in a sorry state.
“Social amenities are not known to the people of Mahalape. There is no refuse collection, no water, no electricity and no road networks. Only God knows where they relieve themselves. Some of the neighbours buy water from nearby locations while others have dug open wells for domestic use,” added Mutambirwa.
A resident of Mahalape who spoke on condition of anonymity said most of the people in the settlement have resorted to bush toilets because there are no proper toilets.
“There is nothing that we can do because there are no toilets. People who live close to the railway line relieve themselves in the railway line. Some of them find a discrete place to relieve themselves. We really are surviving on God’s grace,” said the resident.
Addressing local media recently, Mutare District Health Promotion Officer Sophia Nezandoyi said Manicaland is at risk as surrounding areas are experiencing a rise in confirmed Cholera cases.
“Cholera cases were high in Burma valley from February to March and by April the cases were low. However, there is now an increase of cases in Bocha, Odzi, areas in Marange. We assume that the main cause of an increase in cases in Chishingwi is contaminated water in Odzi River because there are a lot of informal miners (magweja),” said Nezandoyi.
The issue of sewer streams was also raised in a constituency feedback meeting held last year by Mutare Central Constituency Member of Parliament Innocent Gonese at Sakubva tennis court.
On the sidelines of the event, Reverend Muchebve from Church of Christ in Chinyausunzi said the issue of poor sewer systems continues to put people’s lives at risk amid confirmed cholera outbreaks.
“In my area of residence, the sewer pipes are outdated. We do not spend four to five days without a sewer blockage. When council comes, they push the waste to another pipeline. This goes on and on because the pipes are outdated,” said Muchebve.

Internal stakeholders to participate in curriculum review-MoPSE Perm Sec

Perpetua Murungweni

Ministry of Primary and Secondary Education has urged its clientele and other stakeholders to make sure they contribute their input when the ministry carries out nationwide 2023 Curriculum Review Consultations set for May 23 and 24.
The ministry’s permanent secretary Tumisang Thabela released a statement dated May 17, 2023 saying they are carrying out a curriculum review where everyone will get a chance to participate in deciding the best education curriculum.
“We will be carrying out a Nationwide 2023 Curriculum Review Consultations with our clients and internal stakeholders on 23 and 24 May. Every school will be a consultation center starting from 0830 to 1700 hours.
“The consultations will give an opportunity for the internal stakeholders to participate in deciding the education we want as a nation and their views are important to shape our socio-economic development,” said Thabela.
Thabela also encouraged all stakeholders to be part of the consultation which she says is meant to improve the competence-based curriculum.
“All stakeholders should not miss out this opportunity to improve the competence-based curriculum in the ministry’s quest of providing equitably and inclusive 21st century quality education, leaving no one and no place behind,” she added.
A curriculum review is a critical examination of academic programmes for the purpose of optimizing student learning experiences led collaboratively by academic staff who teaches within the programme.
Zimbabwe introduced the competence-based curriculum in 2015 on a seven year duration up to 2022 where great strides have and are being made to ensure the education system produces self-reliant learners and is aimed at shifting from the traditional system where learners’ participation was minimal resulting in them not obtaining the critical skills they need in their lives.

Kwekwe-Ruvimbo Central Soccer League outfit Kwekwe United has appointed former Warriors soccer star and legend Agent Sawu as their new Head coach.
Sawu takes over reins from Beknown Mhlangeni who was in charge with the club currently positioned 8th on log standings after securing five points from four matches.
Kwekwe Club Secretary Francis Tavagadza confirmed the development which he says was necessitated by the desire to achieve the club’s season targets.
“Agent Sawu is our new head coach and his appointment is with immediate effect.
“We felt that the coaches we had did not have the capability to reach the set targets, which is the reason why we made the changes,” said Tavagadza.
He further revealed that the club is also moving away from Baghdad stadium to Ziscosteel in Redcliff for their home games.
“The change of our home ground was cost related, it was more expensive to host matches at Baghdad than at the Ziscosteel club.
“On the business side, there are more opportunities at Zisco for us to do various initiatives that can help us generate more income,” said Tavagadza.
Another Warriors star Ronald Sibanda comes in as the team manager as Sawu was granted room to select his assistant coaches.

Masvingo Prisons release only 6 female inmates

Beverly Bizeki

Only six female prison inmates of the 375 total inmates were released in Masvingo province on May 18, 2023 under the amnesty proclaimed by President Emmerson Mnangagwa recently.
Zimbabwe Prisons and Correctional Services (ZPCS) Provincial Public Relations Officer Stanslous Sanike confirmed the statistics and said the inmates were released on May 18.
“As Masvingo province, we have released 375 inmates, six of which are females,” said Sanike.
He urged members of the community to play their roles in the rehabilitation of ex-convicts by accepting them back in society.
“We urge members of the community to accept the ex-prisoners who have just been released under the presidential amnesty to play their role in the rehabilitation of these inmates by accepting them back into society so that they do commit crimes and go back to jail where they have been,” he added.
Sanike also said inmates released have been equipped with new skills to help them survive after spending time in prison.
“We offer rehabilitation programmes such as motor mechanics, education and agriculture to inmates to ensure that they can have something to do when they get out of prison,” said Sanike.
The amnesty offered to non-violent prisoners has seen the release of 4 279 inmates countrywide with 104 being women while those serving violent crimes remained behind bars.
Among those pardoned were the terminally ill, females and juveniles who were not serving specified offences. From Harare Central Prison, a total of 405 mostly elderly inmates were released.

Zanu PF bans WhatsApp groups

…Several WhatsApp groups fuelling factionalism
…Remaining groups to be monitored by party executive

Brighton Chiseva

Ruling party Zanu PF has moved to curb party squabbles bedevilling the party through banning several WhatsApp groups in Masvingo province, which the party said are not serving any purpose but just fuelling factionalism.
In an urgent notice addressed to all members including affiliate organizations, Provincial Secretary for Information Pepukai Chiwewe instructed that all WhatsApp groups which talk about or have any links to Zanu PF be dissolved.
“Instruction has been issued by the Security Department to dissolve or delete all WhatsApp groups that talk or have links or have anything to do with the party Zanu PF with immediate effect.
“However, constituencies, wards or party districts are still allowed to formulate, manage and organize one group which incorporate(s) every party member,” read the notice.
It also indicated that District Coordinating Committee (DCC) chairpersons and secretaries for information from all organs will be monitoring activities in the allowed WhatsApp groups, before warning members to adhere to the order with immediate effect, failure to which they will face the law.
“The department of information would like to warn all members to remain guided by the constitution of the party and keep their maximum adherence to instructions guiding us. The group admins who are going to defy this order shall be treated as divisive and they will face the ugly reality of the law without fear or favour. The deadline to comply with this directive is effectively immediate.
“I appeal to all members in our illustrious province to comply as expected. Any inconveniences caused are sincerely regrettable,” the directive read.
Chiwewe in an interview also said that the decision was taken after party leadership realised that members were haphazardly creating WhatsApp groups to insult each other as well as settling personal vendettas.
He added that the move was just a housekeeping issue which will enable social media to further party interests once it is properly coordinated.
“We are not saying groups should be totally banned, but we are saying at district level, there should be a group, as well as at cell level, with all our executive members in that group. That also applies to provincial level, not having several WhatsApp groups that end up promoting the undermining of the Zanu PF constitution.
“Some of the groups are fuelling funny factionalism, aggravating divisions while at the same time weakening the party; that is what we want to guard against,” Chiwewe said.
The decision comes barely a week after the party embarked on a healing exercise aimed at consoling those who lost during the party’s primary elections, including those who are aggrieved that they lost due to rigging machinations that marred the polls.
The party is battling to bring its house in order pending an imminent Bhora Musango from those who felt short changed with the outcomes of the primaries.
Some who won the polls were later disqualified for different reasons while in some cases, cell registers were said to be in shambles leading to the defeat of some aspiring candidates.
Factionalism in the province has seen the party divided salong two leaders namely Provincial chairperson Robson Mavhenyengwa fronting the faction aligned to Vice president Constantino Chiwenga while former chair now Minister of State for Provincial Affairs and Devolution Ezra Chadzamira leads the other aligned to President Emmerson Mnangagwa.

Morocco vows to contribute towards Africa’s food security

Brighton Chiseva

MIDRAND-SOUTH AFRICA – The Kingdom of Morocco has vowed to contribute immensely towards ensuring Africa’s food security and strengthening bilateral trade with other African countries.
Speaking during the official opening of the Pan African Parliament Sixth ordinary session in Midrand, South Africa, the President of the House of Councillors in the Kingdom of Morocco Enaam Mayara said Morroco was ready to work with other African States for the development of the continent.
“We express from this platform our support for all serious parliamentary initiatives, which aims to strengthen institutional cooperation and joint thinking on ways to emerge from continental parliamentary cooperation models that keep pace with the bilateral and multilateral dynamics, especially in order to face the challenges related to food security, water scarcity, the growing dangers of terrorist groups, armed movements and militias, combating the exploitation of children in armed conflicts, clandestine migration and human trafficking, in addition to the challenges of digitization, the fourth industrial revolution, confronting climate change and other issues of common interest at the continental and regional level,” said Mayara
Mayara went on to say Morocco, which recently re-joined African Union, was happy to be in the AU family and contributing to its development and for being invited for the PAP session.
“I would like to extend my deep appreciation for participating in the opening session of the African Parliament, alongside all the components of our continental institutional family, and I would like to express my gratitude to the President of the African Parliament, my friend Chief Fortune Charumbira, for his honourable invitation,” said Mayara
He called on all member states to each contribute towards the development of the continent each in its own capacity.
“We are all called upon, based on our main role as representatives of the people in our countries, to build a continental parliamentary agenda capable of facing all challenges and accelerating the emergence of a continental model to ensure common development and achieve the aspirations of our nations for well-being, progress and prosperity,”
He also commended the organization of the current parliament session by the African Parliament under the title of “Accelerating the Implementation of the African Continental Free Trade Area (AfCFTA)”, which he said comes in perfect harmony with the theme of the African Union for the year 2023.
He said this will make the current session a “working session” and a main station for contributing to the success of the great continental economic process that aims to establish the largest free trade area in the world, with a continental market made up of about 1.3 billion people and a combined domestic product of about 3.4 trillion dollars.
“The processes of the implementation of the “African Continental Free Trade Area” are at the heart of the Kingdom of Morocco’s interests, given their importance in changing the continental development model, to become more productive and create opportunities for all. This important continental project will also enable the creation of a large number of job opportunities for the benefit of young people and save 30 million Africans out of extreme poverty and improve the income of 68 million people, while increasing continental wealth by 450 billion dollars,” he said.
He said Morocco was working to exchange experiences and best practices related to economic and development programmes, alongside the strengthening of the financial and banking systems of a large number of the continent’s countries.
“This enabled the increase in the total value of Morocco’s bilateral trade with African countries by 9.5 percent as an annual average, in parallel with the strengthening of Moroccan investments in Africa, which consist mainly of direct investments in sub-Saharan Africa, which made the kingdom of Morocco the first African investor in the African continent.
“My country’s determination to develop cooperation and solidarity with all African brothers is matched only by its similarity to the success of all the institutional projects that the African Union is working to implement, foremost of which is strengthening the role of the Pan-African Parliament as an actual expression of the continent’s slogan “One Voice, One Continent’,” he said.
