Award winning Mokoomba ready for Mutare concert

Well-travelled and internationally acclaimed musical ensemble ,Mokoomba will be in Mutare for a once in a lifetime musical show to be held on March 31, 2023.
Courtauld Theater Facilitator and Creative Artist Tawanda Tsopotsa told this publication that the much anticipated musical concert is already gathering momentum and tickets will be sold at the day.
“We can confirm that Mokoomba will be here at Courtauld theatre come month end. Tickets will be going for US$5 up until 7:30 pm but for those who come late they will be going for US$10. The concert is expected to start at 7:30 and end late in the evening. There will also be an after party at the Lounge. This is once in a lifetime experience because we all know that they (Mokoomba) are a well-travelled group. It’s an opportunity for people from Mutare and Manicaland as a whole to attend this show.
“Mokoomba is always on tour and it has not been easy getting a date on their busy diary to come to Mutare. In terms of previous show the attendance has been great and we expect the same.
Mookomba Lead Guitarist Trustworth Samende told this publication that the show is meant to spread Mookomba music to a wider fan base.
“Mokoomba is coming to perform in Mutare, supported by local Mutare acts Ntswai Ntswai Arts, Rutendo Jackie, and Baba Matezo. The concert will be held on Friday, March 31 at Courtauld Theatre. The aim for Mokoomba is to introduce their music to a wider audience as they seek to increase their fan base beyond Victoria Falls, Harare, and Bulawayo as well as internationally where they have been touring and performing many times over the decade,” said Samende.
Mookomba is a household name in music circles. The ensemble has so far performed in 50 countries across the globe for over 13 years.
They have released two internationally acclaimed albums that have gone to open opportunity doors wider.
“Mokoomba recently released a single titled Nzara Hapana which talks about the importance of families planning for the future and writing ‘wills’ to protect their families when members pass on, to avoid inherited disputes that usually result in suffering of women and children. This single is part of Mokoomba’s new album that will be released early July, “added Samende on their latest work.
Mokoomba is a six member band that originated from Chinotimba Township in Victoria Falls. They began their musical voyage at an early age but transformed into a professional band in 2008.
Mookomba’s sound is an Afro Fusion, which blends traditional rhythms with contemporary influences sung in Shona, Ndebele, Tonga, Nyanja and Luvale.
Courtauld Theater has hosted successful shows in the past chief among those being an oversubscribed show pitting Comic Pastor and Nigel the comedian last year.

Tennis star Madoro shines again

Young table tennis star Trust Madoro recently increased four to his 39 medal tally after registering successive wins at Veritas Sports Club in the capital.
Trust, who is only 14 years old scooped player of the tournament award, under 15 silver and under 18 singles gold.
Speaking to TellZim News, Trust’s coach and father Kudakwashe Madoro expressed happiness over the recent achievements by the young lad.
“Yes, we were in Harare at Veritas Sports Club for a tournament hosted by Dominican Convent School. It was a schools’ tournament for Under 15 and 18 age groups. Trust participated and won Under 15 Silver, Under 18 gold singles Gold, under 18 doubles Gold, and a medal for player of the tournament,” said Kudakwashe,
Trust who already had 39 medals to his name now has 43 medals in total.
“The Under 18 singles final was not an easy match for Trust. It was a tough one but because of training and endurance he managed to beat Aidan Mabhaudhi from Goromonzi High School. For the doubles, Emmanuel Muzeza has always been his partner for the past 3 to 4 years so they connect well in terms of movement. Their gold medal in the doubles is well deserved,” added Kudakwashe.
Kudakwashe also received coach of the tournament award.
Trust’s started his career at a tender age of 8.
His first tournament was Manicaland Closed tourney held on March 25, 2017 at Mutare Teachers College (MTC) where he clinched a Gold medal in the under 10 cluster.
He then featured in Zim Open tournaments and Provincial Open tournaments.
The zenith of his career so far is a tournament held in the Zambian capital Lusaka. He competed against competitors from 5 regional countries (Zambia, Malawi, Kenya, Tanzania and Zimbabwe) winning the only Zimbabwean medal, a silver medal in the under 13 cluster.
Sponsorship for the young lad has been the major worry that has affected his tours to other countries to feature in tournaments.

CHIREDZI- Despite efforts to end child labor in Zimbabwe, a significant rise in divorces has been cited as a major driver of child prostitution, labor and poor retention in schools.
Interacting with these children, this publication learnt that most of these children left their homes to work as house maids and cattle herders after their parents separated.
Coalition Against Child Labor in Zimbabwe (CACLAZ)’s school returnees sponsorship programme has revealed that the children are usually left with no choice as they will have to fend for themselves.
Lisbert Senga (13) from Uswaushava narrated her ordeal and said she went to stay with her grandmother after her parents separated, with living conditions forcing her to leave for Rutenga were she worked as a house helper.
“I went to stay with my grandmother after the separation of my parents. I walked 12 kilometers to and from school and most of the time walking during the night. I couldn’t bear it, so I went to work as a housemaid at Rutenga growth point.
“I was being treated well as they gave me food and better comfort. My mom and grandmother looked for me everywhere, and I later informed them that I was safe. My mother was later married and my stepfather never wanted to see me closer to her, which later led them to separate. We heard news from Mr Tusai that CACLAZ was looking for children like me to go back to school and I grabbed the opportunity,” narrated Lisbert.
Tapiwa Mukwena from Kushinga Primary also told his story, saying he grew up under the guardianship of his grandmother as he never knew his parents.
“I don’t know where my parents are and nobody was paying for my school fees. I began herding cattle for a living as my guardians failed to raise money for my school fees,” said Tapiwa.
Chiedza Mapope from the same school with Tapiwa said her parents separated and she was forced to stay with her grandmother, who later failed to pay for her fees.
“My parents separated and I began staying with my grandmother. They later failed to pay for my school fees, leading me to drop out of school. I later enrolled through CACLAZ’s programme,” she said.
CACLAZ, a non-governmental organization advocating for an end to child labor in Zimbabwe has successfully returned to school more than 1 200 school drop outs in Chiredzi district, with close to 350 Kalahari goats for their livelihood support.
Recently, CACLAZ roped in various governmental departments including the District Development Coordinator’s office, Ministry of Education, Department of Social Development, Department of Labour, Zimbabwe Republic Police and Child line, to mention but a few, to help with sustainable ideas towards the upkeep of the goat livelihood project which will later cater for the school fees of these children.

Chaotic scenes were reportedly witnessed on March 26, 2023 in Bikita West constituency after Acting Zanu PF Masvingo Provincial youth chairperson Delight Mandebvu allegedly produced a gun twice, threatening voters during the primary elections yet to be concluded.

Mandebvu who was reportedly pushing for incumbent MP Elias Musakwa is said to have threatened voters in ward 23, that is Duma location and ward 5 of the same Bikita West.

Contacted for comment Masvingo Zanu PF Provincial Chairperson Robson Mavhenyengwa declined to comment saying he was not authorized to do so by the party hierarchy.

“If you want news concerning these elections, let me refer you to Christopher Mutsvangwa (Zanu PF national spokesperson) or Mike Bimha (political commissar) as I am not allowed to comment on such,” said Mavhenyengwa.

Contacted to shed light on the allegations, Mandebvu said he was busy in a meeting and asked the reporter to contact him after an hour.

“I am busy in a meeting, maybe you can call me after an hour or so,” said Mandebvu.

After that one hour lapsed, Mandebvu was said to be still in the meeting by one identified as Shumba who returned the call.

Masvingo Provincial Police Spokesperson Kudakwashe Dhewa could not comment on the matter (by time of writing) saying the issue was yet to reach his office.

Sources privy to the on-goings however alleged Mandebvu who was moving around with the official Youth League Chair’s vehicle first produced the gun in ward 23 Duma location and voters had to disperse in fear for their lives.

“Yes, it’s true that Mandebvu produced a gun in Duma to scare people who had gathered to cast their votes in the primary elections and that was during a Women’s League event,” said the source.

Another source said Mandebvu arrived at a polling station in ward 5 leading a convoy of high-speeding cars before going on to chant slogans for his alleged preferred candidate Musakwa to which party members did not respond.

“Mandebvu came at a voting station in ward 5 leading a convoy of high speeding cars with him travelling in the official youth league vehicle. He started doing slogans like ‘Shudhu pashudhu’ that is known to be Musakwa’s mantra. People did not respond which likely triggered Mandebvu’s anger.

“Mandebvu and his companions started shouting at Bikita District Police Chief calling him a sell-out and accusing him of not knowing what he does. During the ensuing melee, another Zanu PF member was seen capturing the youth vehicle’s pictures and that angered Mandebvu who went to his vehicle and produced a gun and voters dispersed in fear,” said the source.

The incident is reported to have occurred during the presence of district chairperson Zvomunoda Taruona, provincial member Lloyd Svondo and several other party leaders from the district.

Reports of Mandebvu being beaten in ward 5 also surfaced though not verified.

Masvingo district shines at Heritage quiz competitions

Schools from Masvingo district made a big come back from the long Covid-19 induced closure of school competitions after they came out tops in quiz competitions hosted by Helen McGhie on March 24, 2023.
Masvingo district shrugged off competition from six other districts in the Provincial Heritage quiz competitions and were awarded a floating trophy for their efforts.
Helen McGhie Primary School representing Masvingo district won the competition with a whopping 36 points followed by Gutu district represented by Gutu United Primary trailing the winners with two points on 34.
Chivi district represented by Madyangove Primary School came third on 32 points while Marecha Primary School from Bikita came out fourth with 28 points.
Masvingo Provincial Deputy Education Director Micho Hove graced the event together with N Richards Southern region manager Andrew Chekani as well as National Museums and Monuments of Zimbabwe Director Southern Region Lovemore Mandima.
The competition saw participants answering questions in five categories which included object identification, science and nature, environment and general knowledge.
Hove who was representing the Masvingo Provincial Education Director Shylatte Mhike said the competition resonates well with Heritage studies as a learning area in schools.
“This competition dovetails well in the focus of the Ministry of Primary and Secondary Education as we have introduced the Heritage Studies learning area.
“As I speak right now, government has provided textbooks on Heritage Studies and for this week it was Mwenezi and Masvingo district which were collecting their books from our head office in Harare,” said Hove.
Mandima said he was impressed with the quality and quantity that has been showcased by the schools.
“All the districts were well represented in terms of quantity and even the quality, we always compare ourselves with other provinces, Masvingo is always atop in terms of quality,” said Mandima.
Chekani urged the school authorities to maintain the standards displayed at the event.
N Richards honored the participants with books and cash prizes which saw participants from number 7 to 5 walking away with US$ 20 each.
Number 4 winners walked away with US$ 25 each, while number 3 winners walked away with US $30 each.
The runner up walked away with cash prizes including US$ 40 each and a trophy for the district from the NMMZ while the winners had US$ 50 each and a shield from the NMMZ.
Each district had three participants.
The heritage quiz competition for primary schools was started in 1993 and was disrupted by the Covid-19 pandemic over the past three years.
The final competition will be held on May 18, 2023 in Bulawayo.

Zimuto community urges council to prioritize feedback on projects

Masvingo Rural District Council (MRDC) Ward 2 villagers have urged council to constantly come back to them with feedback on projects being implemented by council in order for them to be kept informed on development in their area.
Speaking at an engagement meeting organized by TellZim News in partnership with the Zimbabwe Coalition on Debt and Development (ZIMCODD) at Zimuto Siding Community Hall on March 20, 2023, participants told MRDC Chairperson Albert Mangena that it was important that council comes back to give feedback to community on what they were doing for transparency’s sake.
One of the participants, Stephen Chipadza said there are council houses that are now lying idle in various places within the wards, which council could use for its other businesses if they can take account of them on time.
“On infrastructure issues, we have several houses here at this shopping centre, in Gurajena, in Maraire and other places. We think if council take these houses into account, the community can benefit from them,” Chipadza said.
Another participant, Ozias Dunira said the issue of community boreholes needed council’s attention as there were other villages that had no boreholes and had to go far to access clean water.
“At Chikato School, we are appealing for a solar powered borehole there. Also in Gumbiti Village, we have to rely on water from uncovered wells and if we want clean water we would have to go to Chikato or come to Zimuto Siding Shopping Centre to get water,” Dunira said.
The issue of unfinished projects was also topical as villagers suggested that Cllr Mangena gives feedback on which projects had been finished and which ones were yet to be completed.
Cllr Mangena then gave a brief on the completion of several clinics as well as maternity waiting homes that had been completed, some of them using devolution funds.
“Mwarizvo Clinic in Ward 23 is now complete, with only a few touch ups left on the nurses’ house. At Musingarabwi in Ward 20, there is a clinic that has been completed. There is Chatikobo waiting mothers’ shelter that has been completed, among others.
“On the project profile issue that has been discussed here, I want to assure you that council wants it to be understood and appreciated from the grassroots here because every year, MRDC road works and planning director Nyatsanza does not pass February without requesting project profiles from respective councilors,” Cllr Mangena said.
Also in attendance was Chief Zimuto, who expressed gratitude towards council for revamping business centres in his area, among other developmental projects the local authority had spearheaded.

…As ZIMCODD lands landmark constitutional ruling in PFM

The Zimbabwe Coalition for Debt Management and Development (ZIMCODD) is basking in glory after scoring a ‘landmark constitutional ruling’ compelling the Ministry of Finance and Economic Development to amend the Public Finance Management Act through a bill.
The ruling by the High Court of Zimbabwe on March 23 saw the ministry being given an order to ensure that the bill amending the act shall be done within a period not exceeding 12 months.
“It is ordered by consent that within 12 months from the date (March 23, 2023) of this order, the Minister of Finance and Economic Planning and Development shall propose for national assent to the National Assembly by way of motion or in the Finance Bill the limit for public borrowing envisaged in section 11 (2) of the Public Finance Management Act (Chapter 27:21).
“Within 12 months from the date of this order, the Minister of Finance and Economic Planning and Development shall gazette a bill amending the Public Finance Management Act (Chapter 21:22) which Bill will outline: The role of Parliament in approving loans and guarantees before the contraction of the same, the limits on debts and obligations guaranteed by the State pursuant to section 300 (1) of the Constitution, the procedure in respect of which Parliament ratifies or rejects any loan or guarantee and the procedure in which the State regularly updates Parliament on debts are obligatory loans including guarantees. Each party shall pay its own costs,” read the ruling by the High Court.
ZIMCODD, Henry Kane, Chioneso Samantha Kanoyangwa and Alice Kuveya as applicants were represented by former Finance Minister Tendai Biti while the Minister of Finance (Mthuli Ncube), Parliament of Zimbabwe and the Attorney General of Zimbabwe were the respondents.
ZINCODD Programs Manager John Maketo praised the ruling saying it will go a long way in ushering some sense of discipline that has been lacking in the Ministry of Finance while at the same time bringing into play the principle of decentralization of power.
“This is a landmark ruling in Zimbabwe and a correction on serious roles in the management of public finances. It is taking away centralized powers from the office of the Minister (of Finance) and strengthening Parliamentary approval to public spending.
“The situation has not been fine because the Minister previously would just decide to give a certain company the guarantee to borrow money without the scrutiny of Parliament which will in turn give a burden to ordinary citizens. Most of the guarantees that were given be it to private companies or parastatals were a total failure because the companies are or were not performing,”
“Assuming public government debt being done by one person without Parliamentary approval was a major undoing to the country. This ruling thus is a constitutional error that existed but has been corrected by this order,” said Maketo.
On a number of occasions, Minister Mthuli Ncube has been caught offside as he wantonly presided over excessive government expenditures without following protocols like seeking prior Parliamentary approval before making key decisions while at times he would apply for Parliamentary pardon after over spending.

Gweru- Zanu PF District Coordinating Committee (DCC) Secretary for Information and Publicity Victor Maride has said he is ready to serve the constituency once he is elected into office.
Maride who happens to be one of the youngest candidates vying for the Gweru Urban Member of Parliament seat, said for long Gweru Urban had been abandoned under the leadership of opposition parties.
Speaking during one of his campaigns ahead of the primaries (set for March 25), Maride highlighted that for the past 23 years Gweru had missed a lot of development ever since Zanu PF lost it to the opposition.
“As Gweru Urban, we had been lost under the opposition banner, citizens were like orphans, service delivery has been pathetic, poor roads, infrastructure and no sound policies for development and the welfare of the citizens.
“For long various stakeholders and residents have not consulted on key issues,” he said.
He further said servant leadership involves people.
“I am ready to be a servant, a servant who will work with other people and offices even councillors. We have a better future together. We have schools to build in our communities areas like Senga, clinics, safe water sources among other important things,” he added.
Zanu PF national political commissar Mike Bimha announced that the much awaited ruling party primary elections will be conducted this Saturday on March 25, 2023
“Thanks to all who have been patient as the process was taking place. The thorough process was necessary. We had people from all sectors of the country taking a keen interest in contesting,” he said.
Gweru Urban list of aspiring candidates is as follows; Victor Maride, Zezai Makomo, Alex Mukwembi ,Costain Mukanganiki, Aurther Gore and Esau Natare.
Mkoba North Constituency has a tight contest between Edgar Ncube , Kudakwashe Shambare and Enerst Gondo.
Mkoba South will see Militao and Wellington Magura standing up to the contest.
Lindiwe Bidi, Rangani Chauke ,Vivian Maponga, Kwideni Sleiman and Kumbulani Ngwenya will battle it out for Chiwundura Constituency, while Brown Ndlovu, Lyton Moyo and Omega Sibanda will battle it for Vungu Constituency.

However, I just want to implore ICC to put criminals in Zimbabwe on the same list as vanaPutin. Continued power outages by Zimbabwe Electricity Supply Authority (ZESA) have led to erratic water supply to residents, Masvingo City Deputy Director of Engineering services Engineer Kudzaishe Mbetu has said.
Speaking at a residents engagement meeting organized by Masvingo United Residents and Ratepayers Alliance (MURRA) at Civic Center on March 24 2023, Eng. Mbetu said limited supplies of water was a result of lack of power at the council’s Bushmead water works.
“Our plant produces 30 mega liters per day provided there is power supply 24hrs per day but we are currently experiencing power shortages and with the 7 hour ZESA schedule, we can only produce around 7.7 mega liters which is not enough to provide for the whole city.
“Under normal circumstances, we give 8 hour water supply in the city by allowing water to flow from around 3am to 10am in residential areas and from around 3am to 4pm in the CBD but now with the shortages of power, we are forced to hold water for at least two days to ensure even distribution with around 16 mega liters,” said Eng. Mbetu.
During the meeting, some residents aired out their complains about how they have been experiencing water shortages for some time and Eng. Mbetu shed light on how water is distributed to every part of the city.
“Our water network is 240 km meaning the velocity of the water from the tanks to the furthest end will be moving at 1.5 meters per second so it needs 2 hours and 45 minutes to reach high laying areas like Gomba, Rujeko B shops, Rhodene, Zimre Park, KMP, Runyararo South West and other such areas.
“If we do not hold water for at least two days, it will be difficult for those living in high laying areas to get water and only low lying areas like Majange and Mucheke Rank will receive water,” he added.
Town Clerk Engineer Edward Mukaratirwa however said council plans to erect a solar plant to power Bushmead water works are in the pipe line.
“We carried out a feasibility study to see if we can introduce solar system to power our water works and we are currently in the process of mobilizing funds in order to erect that solar power plant.
“The solar system will be an alternative plan in the event that there is ZESA power outage and this will help ensure full water supply in and around the city,” said Eng. Mukaratirwa.
