Churches engage Govt on civic participation in devolution

Simon Parwaringira

 Clayton Shereni

MASVINGO –
Zimbabwe Heads of Christian Denomination (ZHCOD) last week pledged their
support of the devolution programme which is being implemented by the
government across the country.

Speaking
during a provincial leader’s symposium held a local hotel, ZHCOD provincial
chairperson Simon Parwaringira said the organization was working tirelessly as
a unifying structure to ensure development in the country.

“ZHCOD
acts as a unifying structure bringing together the church around common themes
and objectives. As an organization, it is within our mandate to ensure that we
compliment government efforts in development through evangelization.

“We
are happy with previous engagements which we have had with government in
disaster management, education, health and relief programmes,” said
Parwaringira.

The
organization is a brainchild of four apex church representative bodies;
Catholic Commission for Justice and Peace (CCJP), Zimbabwe Council of Churches
(ZCC), Union For Development of Apostolic and Zionist Churches in Zimbabwe
Africa (UDACIZA) and the Evangelical Fellowship of Zimbabwe (EFZ).

Minister
of State for Provincial Affairs and Devolution, Ezra Chadzamira, who was the
guest of honour, applauded the church for playing a pivotal role

“Our
government respects churches and the critical role they play in the
communities. The devolution agenda is bringing positive development to the
grassroots level and in Masvingo, we have completed 77 projects including
clinics, schools, refuse compactors and graders by local authorities.

Masvingo
province was allocated $1.8 billion under the 2021 devolution program and various
projects across the province’s seven districts are expected to begin.

In
Masvingo province, ZHCOD operates in four districts namely Bikita, Gutu,
Masvingo and Chivi where; working in conjunction with local leaders to promote
the role of churches in creating social cohesion and civic participation within
devolution processes.

The
meeting was targeting to sensitize local leadership about the ZHCOD project,
strengthen the relationship of the government, church and community leaders to
ensure the ownership and oversight of the project at local level.

ZHCOD
also operates in Manicaland and Midlands provinces where it works with government departments in implementing devolution,
decentralization and developmental projects.

Armed robbery goes wrong

kombi with stolen tyre loot overturns in high-speed chase

Blessed Chauke

MASVINGO – A
robbery went wrong in the early hours of today after the driver of a kombi that
had been stashed with stolen tyres lost control of the vehicle and fell on the
roadside after a high-speed chase by the rapid response team from Junior
Security Company.

Though
the police were not available to give a comment immediately, TellZim
understands that some 112 brand new tyres of assorted type and sizes, and with a worth of over US$40 000 dollars, were recovered.

A
source who refused to be named said four robbers attacked and tied the Junior Security
guard manning the Crown Duo tyre outlet close to Byword Motors in the
industrial area of Masvingo.

They
then loaded the brand new tyres into their Mazda kombi and into the trailer.

Unbeknown
to them, the security guard, despite his hands being tied-up, had managed to
pull out a small cell-phone from his pocket which he used to painstakingly sent
an SOS text message to the security control room.

A
rapid response team was then dispatched, only to find the robbers still loading
their loot.

One
of the robbers who acted as a sentry then alerted his colleagues that they had
been busted and the overloaded kombi, tugging an overloaded trailer, took off
at high-speed towards the VID Masvingo Depot but it fell just after the DocZine
Fuels service station.

The
ruffians, however, managed to extricate themselves from the wreckage and fled
the scene on foot.

No
arrest had been made by the time of writing after the police reacted hours
later.

TellZim
saw the recovered tyres and the damaged vehicles parked at Masvingo Central
Police station for exhibit.

I never left Zanu PF, says Mudzikisi

Pascal Mudzikisi

…as
he gets readmitted into the party

Brighton Chiseva

Masvingo
businessman Pascal Mudzikisi who contested as an independent candidate against
Minister Davis Marapira for the Masvingo North parliamentary seat in the 2018
general election, has now rejoined Zanu PF, TellZim can report.

He
says he has always been a member of Zanu PF whose principles and values are
rooted in the party, and had never really left it.

Mudzikisi
appeared at a Masvingo Provincial Coordinating Committee PCC) meeting held at Great
Zimbabwe University’s (GZU) Robert Mugabe School of Education on Sunday, May 02,
where he was formally introduced into the party.

He
was welcomed together with former MDC stalwarts Tongai Matutu, Dr William
Zivenge and former Senator James Makore by Zanu PF secretary for science and technology
in the politburo Christopher Mutsvangwa and the provincial leadership of the
party.

“I
was Zanu PF and I am still Zanu PF. I never stopped supporting it because
that’s where my principles lay so I couldn’t go to another party where I will
be forced to fight my principles. That is the reason why I did not join any
other political party after my expulsion,” Mudzikisi later told TellZim News.

He
was automatically expelled from the party after he contested for the Masvingo
North parliamentary seat as an independent, having failed to contest in the
primaries after his CV failed to sail through during the vetting process.

“Quarrels
are good for democracy in any community but what is important is that at the
end people reconcile and move forward,” Mudzikisi said.

He
said he had a huge following which could add to the party’s vote tally in the
2023 general election.

“When
I contested as an independent I got 2 000 votes and most of those people are
still loyal to me and they can contribute to the party’s five million votes target
in the general election.

“The
reception we got at the PCC was warm. We were allowed to stay and hear them
deliberate, a thing which shows that we have been forgiven,” he said.

On
whether he will contest in the 2023 elections, Mudzikisi said he was ready to
serve but will stand guided by the party.

“I
am loyal to Zimbabwe and to Masvingo North where I was born and bred. So if
there is anyone who is able to represent and fulfill the needs of Masvingo
North, I will support them regardless of where they come from.

“However
I will then make noise about it if they fail. If the party and the people of
Masvingo North want me to represent them, I will do but if Zanu PF sees that
there is someone who can represent its interests better in the constituency, I
will gladly support that someone,” said Mudzikisi.

the final to be declared the 2021 champions.

Nemamwa and Super Angels played dismally as they failed to
register any win in all games they played.

Highfliers representing manager, Ranee Tonono said she was very
excited with her team’s well-polished performance throughout the tournament
although they didn’t have a coach on their bench.

“I am excited that our team managed to defeat the 2020 champions
despite the fact that we did not have a coach. I can say that our team played
classical netball,” said Tonono.

Some of the notable players were Margaret Farainashe who was
scoring for fun from the group stages and was named best player.

The 29-year-old Farainashe, who started playing netball when
she was in form two, said she dreams of representing her country before she
calls it a day.

“Since I started playing netball, I never made it to the
nationals but if given an opportunity I would like to play for the national
team and make my country proud,” said Farainashe.

Another outstanding player of the day was 16-year-old
Mildreth Wala of Rujeko Mighty Pirates also revealed that she would want to
play more competitive leagues other than social netball.

“I started playing netball when l was eight years old and
all I hope for is to down the national team colours. I have dreams of playing
more competitive netball at bigger events so that I can showcase my talent and
I am confident that I will surely get there,” said Wala.

Tournament chairperson, Rocky Kamuzonda said he was happy
that people had united to organise a community netball tournament which brought
them together.

The tourney was held under strict health watch from health
workers who were enforcing Covid-19 regulations.

The tourney is an annual event where netball social league
players from across Masvingo tussle for the May Day trophy.

Blessed

Masvingo tennis players who were in
February and March supposed to play at a regional tournament held in South
Africa failed to travel to the tourneys after failing to secure funding,
TellZim News can report.

Masvingo Tennis Board Chairperson, Munyaradzi
Thomu told TellZim News that they missed Under18 International Tennis
Federation (ITF) tournaments that were played in South Africa because of lack
of financial resources.

“Unfortunately our Under 18 players
from Masvingo who were supposed to represent Zimbabwe ended up withdrawing because
of lack of financial resources.

“They missed the J4 tournament that was
played in Pretoria and the J5 tournament that was played in Potchefstroom. The
games were played from 8 March to 27 March in South Africa,” said Thomu.

Meanwhile, players have resumed
training and games ahead of a tennis galore which is slated for August where
the province’s finest tennis aces are expected to feature.

Practice and friendly matches are being
played as players gear up for what is expected to be an intriguing encounter,
since they have been on hold from last year March.

Thomu said that they were gearing up
for tourneys which will be hosted at Masvingo Sports Club.

“Local players started playing games
towards the end of March and we are going to host Masvingo Junior Closed
tournament from 14th-16th May at Masvingo Sports Club.

“Masvingo Junior Open tournament on the
23-26 August and Zimbabwe Closed tournament on the 27-30 August. Zimbabwe
Interprovincial tournament on 31 August to 3 September and all these tournaments
will be played at Masvingo Sports Club,” said Thomu.

He said they were planning to have
junior schools league starting from the second term and they will be taking young
players.

league starting second term and we will be taking players from 4 years and
upwards,” said Thomu.

Tennis is one of the few sports codes
which received a greenlight from the Sports and Recreation Commission (SRC) to
resume action.

In a communique to its affiliates,
Tennis Zimbabwe has directed all local leagues and teams to appoint an
enforcement officer who will ensure adherence to Covid-19 guidelines.

“All tennis facilities will appoint
enforcement officers who will ensure adherence to the guidelines and these
requirements and guidelines will cover players who are registered with Tennis
Zimbabwe and have a clearance letter,” reads the communique.

Local tennis coach, Mark Chinyenyani, who
runs Heartbeat tennis academy said they were practicing in compliance with
Covid-19 regulations during training sessions.

“Tennis is a non-contact sport so we
were fortunate to be given the go ahead by SRC to resume practice. We have been
also limiting our group sessions to a maximum of four players per court, which
give them a healthy 3-6 metres apart each time.

“There are no handshakes at any given
time, we always encourage players to use rackets as their hand to avoid
contact,” said   Chinyenyani.

Shongamiti High School’s 20 pointer seeks assistance to tertiary

Ronald Gwara

Kimberly
Kusauka

A Shongamiti
High School pupil who aced his Zimsec November 2020 ‘A’ Level examinations with
straight As from a combination of four subjects has financial challenges
standing between him and his tertiary dream.

Ronald Gwara,
who lost his father when he was still 4 years old, has been struggling with his
mother who is a farm worker.

Gwara
completed his ‘O’ Level at Shongamiti High School in 2018 and managed to scoop
six A’s and three C’s and took up a combination of Economics, Accounting,
Business Studies and Mathematics at ‘A’ Level where he scored 20 points.

Gwara said he
would like to study Accounting at university but his dream hangs in the balance
as his mother’s earnings would not afford him a place at any institution of
higher learning.

“It was a
struggle throughout my primary and secondary studies. I lost my father when I
was still young and my mother’s income was not enough even to sustain us with
basics.

“My mother is
my pillar as she toiled for me to complete my studies. The task ahead now would
be so difficult for her because university is very expensive and from her
salary it would be impossible,” said Gwara.

He said it
would be unfair for him to give up on his dream because of financial challenges
and called on well-wishers to come to his rescue.

“I really wish
to go to university but from where I stand now it is very difficult unless
someone comes to my rescue.

“I always hear
that there are people who help with fees or scholarships to disadvantaged
people like myself and I am pleading with them now to help me,” said Gwara.

Gwara stays
with his grandmother while his mother labours in the fields.
