Junior High School to open in Masvingo next year

0

Construction of school facilities has started

…Shirley Makausi back
from retirement to lead new school

…pupils to have driver’s
licences by time of leaving school

Ziyambi

A new privately-owned
secondary school is being built in Rhodene suburb to help satisfy the expanding
need for quality educational facilities in Masvingo province and beyond,
TellZim can report.

Junior High School is
being built on a 5 hectare piece of prime land on the northernmost part of the
city close to the road to Harare.

The school, which
promises to offer some of the best learning facilities in the whole southern
region of the country, joins the prominent Junior Enterprises portfolio which includes
a driving school and a microfinance institution.

Besides its association
with the strong Junior brand, Junior High has another ace up its sleeve in the
name Shirley Makausi who will be the inaugural school head.

Makausi is capable
leader who transformed Ndarama Government High from just another public school
to a school of choice.

When she left Ndarama
in 2019 upon retirement, Makausi had created an impressive legacy that many would
wish to emulate, but which very few or non are able to match.

Her decision to lend
her reputable name to the Junior High project and, in the process, take on
bigger challenges, gives weight to the school’s stated aim of providing quality
education under the best facilities and conditions, but at a very affordable
cost.

In an interview with
TellZim News, Junior Enterprises director Noah Marima said he was excited by the
opportunity to once again connect with the community through educational
provisions.

“We have been here for
years and people have come to trust our brand. What better way is there to give
back to that community than invest in its education? We can only achieve the
growth that we hope to achieve if access to quality education opportunities is
widened. We are therefore building Junior High School to contribute to
that objective,” said Marima.

The school will be a
sterling combination of academics and extra-curricular activities, with massive
investment being directed to the construction of quality classroom blocks,
science labs and sporting facilities.

The school is
sandwiched by a bald mountain to its north – giving it a recreational aura – and
by the outer edges of the leafy Rhodene suburb to its southern end, elevating
it to a quiet and convivial place for learning.

In an interview with
TellZim, Makausi said she was humbled by yet another opportunity to serve in
the education sector.

‘I accept the offer to
serve with humility and I will do my best. It’s both an opportunity and a
challenge, but I am ready to expend all my remaining energies and expertise to
make Junior High School the success that it ought to be. Parents and all
stakeholders need to see that we are back to serve; to help nurture their
children to greatness, and Junior Secondary School will be the place where that
will happen,” said Makausi.

She said she was
humbled to be identified as the most suitable school head among many other
potential candidates.

“As I settled in
retirement, I had thought my time was up and was a bit taken aback when this
opportunity was availed to me. I thank God that the Junior brand saw in me the
capability that I myself probably could no longer see and this indeed is a
challenge to me. With God on our side, we will build this project and make it a
great success,” said Makausi.

The school is expected
to enroll its pioneering classes in January 2022, with all pupils having a
chance to attain driver’s licences from Junior Driving School by the time they
complete their ‘O’ and ‘A’ levels.

Masvingo PR Officer Jinjika faces suspension

Ashleigh Jinjika

… ‘improper’ relationship with
Tiringindi among the charges

Clayton Shereni

City
of Masvingo is investigating its Public Relations Officer (PRO) Ashleigh Jinjika ‘on
many allegations’ including her alleged intimate love relationship with
activist Prosper Tiringindi.

Tiringindi
has been a constant thorn in council’s shoes for many years due to his abrasive
activism and disruptive behavior, and sources said council was not amused by
reports that their PRO is in a live-in relationship with him.

“There
are indeed investigations that are happening. We investigate, get our facts
right and suspend if there is a genuine need to suspend. We don’t suspend then investigate,”
said Acting Town Clerk Edward Mukaratirwa who confirmed that the alleged
relationship with Tiringindi was among the allegations.

When
contacted for comment, Jinjika said she understood some investigations were
being conducted into her alleged inappropriate behavior.

“I
am waiting for what will happen next. Right now I haven’t received any
suspension letter but I am informed the allegations stem from what happened at
the press conference,” she said.

She
dismissed as false reports that she was in a live-in love relationship with
Tiringindi but said whom she got intimately involved with should never be an issue as that would be her own private life separate from her
official duties.

Things got to a head on Tuesday, April 13, when Tiringindi, who is not a resgistered journalist, got into a press conference
which was being addressed by Mayor Collen Maboke.

Being
visibly under the influence of alcohol, Tiringindi then launched a tirade
against Maboke, Mukaratirwa and Ward 10 Cllr Sengerai Manyanga; accusing them
of maligning him and violating his rights to express himself freely on several
platforms.

Members
of the media who had turned up had to walk out for a while as they felt that
the event was getting too personal, had lost its agenda and was degenerating into a circus.

The
press conference was being moderated by Jinjika.

Why vaccine hesitancy is rife in Masvingo

Dr Ammadious Shamhu

By Tatenda Chitagu

The Sinopharm and Sinovac BioTech COVID 19 vaccines have
joined the long list of products from China that are treated with disdain by
Zimbabweans.

Dubbed Zhing Zhongs, most products from the East Asian giant,
touted as the country’s ‘all-weather friend’, are shunned for being substandard
and not durable.

Even though Health Minister Constantine Chiwenga, who is also
the vice president, was the first one to get the Chinese COVID 19 jab, his
public gesture has not been emulated by frontline workers in Masvingo.

Chiwenga’s principal, President Emmerson Mnangagwa, who only got vaccinated
weeks latter when a second batch that included another Chinese Sinovac Biotech
vaccine arrived, at one time said those not inoculated will not board public
transport.

“Nobody is forced to be vaccinated….but
it will come a time when those who are not will not board ZUPCO buses,” he said.

Chiwenga also reiterated the president’s
point this week in an interview with broadcaster Ruvheneko Parirenyatwa, saying
the COVID 19 vaccination card could be soon used as a passport to public
utilities if people continue shunning the vaccination program.

But the message from the country’s top
citizens, it seems, is falling on deaf ears in the province.

Out of the initial 22 000 doses supplied to Masvingo province
on 19 February, only 3 600 front liners were inoculated as of last week,
according to statistics availed by the provincial COVID 19 taskforce.

Masvingo provincial medical director, Dr Ammadious Shamhu
said there are around 6 600 health workers in the province, excluding other
frontline government workers who are targeted for the initial inoculation
program. This means not all frontline health workers have been inoculated as
the figure of those who got the jabs includes other frontliners like
journalists and others at high exposure to the pandemic.

Some of the few frontliners that got inoculated said they did
so ‘out of fear’. This follows the taking over of the mass roll-out program by
the army medical personnel, as well as threats from government.

Investigations by this publication reveal that among other
reasons, suspicion and stigma are the top causes of the low uptake of the
vaccines, with many developing a wait and see attitude.

“We do not know if there are side effects or not, or whether
the vaccines are effective. You know everything Chinese is not trusted in
Zimbabwe,” one nurse said in an interview, off the record due to retribution
fears.

“Better the devil we now know (COVID 19), than the vaccine we
do not. After all, COVID 19 has chances of recovery. What if you get lifelong
side-effects from a vaccine you do not understand,” another frontliner from the
security services confided to this publication.

Worserning the mistrust were remarks by former Masvingo
provincial medical director, Robert Mudyiradima, now Chief Director responsible for Policy, Planning and
Monitoring & Evaluation in the Ministry of Health and Child Care in
Zimbabwe, who admitted that no tests were done on the Sinopharm vaccines in the
country to establish its efficacy.

Mudyiradima made the
admission when the country received its first batch of the 200 000 Sinopharm
vaccines on 15 February at the Robert Mugabe international airport, some of
which were donated to Zimbabwe.

“When we immunise, we
will take the evidence that it works or not, it has not been tested yet so we
cant say it works or not to the new South African variant,” Mudyiradima said in
remarks that unsettled government.

Health and Child Care deputy minister
John Mangwiro, in a firefighting measure, told Senate a week later that the
Sinopharm vaccine from China does not need further clinical trials as they were
already done internationally to check its effectiveness.

“Before it is administered on people, we
have what we call the World Health Organisation which writes to confirm that
yes, this vaccine does work, and for example, to see how it works, it can be
administered on a sample of five or ten healthy young men. What we have now in
the country is a vaccine that has been dealt with already,” Mangwiro said.

This did not help matters either.

“When there are conflicting signals from
the top, it shows some discord, We are afraid we will be used a guinea pigs,
especially when the vaccine was donated. Free things may be expensive in the
long run,” another Masvingo frontliner said.

Itai Rusike, Executive
Director, Community Working Group on Health (CWGH) said the vaccine hesitancy
is due to a number of factors which include scepticism on government itself,
mistrust of Chinese goods as well as social media misinformation.

“Scepticism of
government, the Sinopharm vaccine and the general mistrust of Chinese goods and
products has laid fertile ground for the vaccine hesitancy, anti-science
opportunism and fear mongering that the country is currently  experiencing in its  Covid-19 national vaccination roll-out
programme resulting in the general poor uptake of the Sinopharm vaccine.

“Social media, including
Twitter, Facebook, and WhatsApp, has been targeted both by those spreading
disinformation, with organised campaigns building on previously existing fault
lines in our society. Both social and traditional media operate on a business model
that rewards alarmist “click bait”. We need to limit the spread of
harmful health misinformation and disinformation in Zimbabwe through
strengthening citizens’ resilience to mis/disinformation.  Empowering media partners to professionally
share lifesaving information and debunk disinformation on Health,” Rusike
said.

Rusike said there is
need to de-politicise the COVID 19 pandemic and increase awareness for improved
vaccines uptake.

“Politicians have used
both Covid-19 and the emergence of vaccines against the disease to score points
and raise their profile. We need Covid-19 vaccine Champions representing
various constituent groups such as Politicians,
Religious Leaders, Youth’s Organizations,  Civil Society, Health Professionals, Persons
with Disabilities etcetera to assist in convincing their members followers and
supporters to embrace vaccination willingness if the country is to achieve the
required herd immunity of vaccinating at least 60 percent of the population.
Public trust and confidence will now have to be rebuilt in the vaccine itself
and requires an urgent widespread communication strategy and plan,” he said.

Citizens Health Watch
trustee Fungisai Dube said government needs to engage and consult more with the
people than try to coerce them.

“It goes back to raising
awareness among the ordinary citizens. So for me it’s lack of information. The
campaign on the vaccine should be taken seriously and to the communities. It is
not a matter of imposing it on people. Engage citizens, dialogue with them so
that there is buy in this regard. Imposing a vaccine on a period of speculation
make it really difficult for people  to
accept the vaccine,” she said.

Called for a comment on why there is so
much vaccine hesitancy in Masvingo, Mangwiro said the vaccination program is
getting a by-in in other provinces and people in Masvingo need more awareness.

“In Harare and Victoria Falls, vaccination centers are
overwhelmed. We need to make people aware, and that is also your duty as
journalists. Otherwise people will die and you start blaming the government
again. Let us be serious as Zimbabweans,” he said.

Mangwiro said his Ministry officials will come to Masvingo to
assess the situation and engage the frontliners on the need for vaccination.

As of Friday, the country had recorded 36,778 cases, with  34,555 having recovered while 1,518 died.

VISET rallies vendors to unite, defend constitutionalism

GWERU
The Vendors Initiative for Social
Economic Transformation (Viset) last week engaged the Midlands informal traders
as part of efforts to equip the sector on constitutionalism.

Viset
Monitoring and Evaluation (M&E) officer Edward Kapodogo told participants
that it was important for them to know their rights as well as strategies that
are effective in holding office bearers to account.

“We
are engaging you because we have many initiatives targeted at empowering
vendors and capacitating our informal sector. We are also here to unpack the constitution
because we realised that many informal traders don’t really know much about
their constitution and their constitutional rights.

He
said it was imperative for vendors to hold government and office bearers to
account through various ways when they feel their rights are getting violated.

“We
are spearheading the Informal Traders Accountability Agenda (ITAA) to help
vendors so that they operate to help amplify the voice of informal traders as
they face a number of challenges which remain unattended to,” said
Kapodogo.

He
said the informal sector was a key enabler of the economy and it was therefore prudent
for vendors to be organised and speak with one voice.

“As
vendors you must know you have a set of rights which are enshrined in the
constitution to protect you. It is imperative that you know what’s happening in
your localities and country.

“If
we are not united, we are not able to advocate for the issues we want to be
addressed. We know that Covid-19 came and government set aside a cushioning fund
for people and businesses but we did not access the money because we are not
united and did not speak with one voice.

Viset
Information and Publicity officer Jabulani Chikomwe said the informal sector must
learn new skills and acquire new knowledge for the sake of growth.

Viset
Gweru coordinator and vendors representative, Rumbidzai Dube also called for
unity and urged participants to go and capacitate others with the knowledge
gained.

The Green Bombers are back

What is
this I am hearing about the Chinese vaccine nhai varume?
What I want to know is whether the Sinopharm and Sinovac vaccines are safe or
not. Mapombi is very emotional about this issue because I received my first jab
of the donated Chinese Sinopharm vaccine and am waiting to get the second jab
very soon. Eheka isu takabaiwa the donated ones not dzakazotengwa idzi kkkkk.
While I am waiting for my second jab I hear the World Health Organisation (WHO)
is investigating the Chinese vaccines. Saka makambovaregererei vachitipa those
vaccines if you were not sure? What is wrong with you guys? Nyaya dzemavaccine
dzava more confusing but vanhu ndeva Mwari. We just have to find comfort in
that simple fact. But why does Zanu PF blindly trust the Chinese like that. If
Mapombi dies because of the vaccine chipoko changu will haunt Zanu PF for life.
Hokoyo Mnangagwa hokoyo kkkkkk.

I do
not want to lie to you dear readers but the truth of the matter is all is not
well in Zanu PF. My sources tell me that Mnangagwa is sleeping with one eye
open because the support seems to be shifting from him and going towards
Khedha. Khedha akuda kutotiza nechinhu and the grassroots are saying he is a
better devil. Benzi ibenzi hama dzangu and hakuna riri nani. Chiwenga and ED
are the same man and replacing one with another will not yield the intended
result. As long as Zanu PF is in charge nothing will ever change. How many of
you are saying Mugabe was better than ED? But pakapinda ED everyone was saying
heee ED is the real deal but he turned out to be a real dambudziko. Everyone is
now being reactionary hanzi dai tisina hedu kubvisa Mugabe kkkkk. Mugabe was
better in what way nhai imi vanhu? Most people fail to understand that Zanu PF
is a system which is deeply entrenched and even if you take Chamisa to lead it
today he would never change the system but the system will change him.

The
simple fact of the matter is that we all have these brilliant ideas until we
join Zanu PF. Look at Mthuli Ncube for example, he had all these brilliant
ideas on how to transform the economy but when he joined the system his first
move was to rob us of our money. A lot of people no longer recognize the Mthuli
Ncube who was out of government and the Mthuli they are seeing now. Well, the
system changed and swallowed him. His ideas no longer matter and the only word
that matters is of Zanu PF. Mthuli has made our lives a living hell and he
keeps telling us that things are getting better. I don’t know which world
Mthuli is living in. The only problem is that these guys are surrounded by
thieves and looters which makes it difficult for them to see beyond that small
circle. They think that everyone lives that same life as theirs and see poverty
as a sign of weakness. We are poor because of Zanu PF so for any meaningful
change to take place, we need a new system altogether and this means Zanu PF
has to go, no I mean swop places with MDC Alliance kkkkk. Ukati Zanu PF must go
unoswera wasungwa wobhadhariswa mazimari like zviri kuitwa opposition
activists. Parikurohwa fund raising yakasimba apo.

But to
all those who are being persecuted I say do not despair, the misery that is
upon us is nothing but the passing of greed. Like I said earlier nyika yakuda
kutonaka iyi. Zanu PF yakuda kuvhunura like it did last time when they deposed
of the G40 faction. Matemadanda uriko here uko. Heads are going to roll very
soon and rumour has it that Chiwenga is fed up with corruption by those who
allege to be close to ED. They think they are above the law and have a carte
blanche to do whatever they want. VP Chiwenga, Mapombi is told, has warned ED
that the corruption being orchestrated in his name will cost the party dearly
and I can tell you that interesting times lay ahead. Mapombi will be there
watching from the terraces ko tingadii. Hanzi panotungana dzemudanga ma1 anenge
atanga. Ngazvibayane ikoko kusvika General Valerio Sibanda watora chinhu. I
hear he is the most sober person out there and with him at the helm todya uchi.
Nyika inodirwa sugar iyi varume and tinorohwa nembovha yemufaro mangwanani
ngwanani. Kurova reverse jive kkkkkk.

Ko
hanziiko paMozambique apo. I hear Cabo Delgado yanetsa with terrorists who want
to create an Islamic State. Our trigger happy soldiers should be deployed there
to silence the guns. We know our defense forces vanongwarira isu vana Mapombi
tiri unarmed. Matemadanda used to brag kuti our army vanonzi vana mafuranhunzi
so I hope they will go there very quickly and stop the madness of killing
people in such gruesome manner. I am not against any religion but what kind of
religion gives people pleasure of beheading others. Kana Islam ichidaro then
pasi nayo. Why should we kill people like we are killing chickens? I know our
soldiers will not dare go to Mozambique because they will all be killed.
Zvasiyana nekumhanyisa vanhu mumastreet emuHarare and shooting innocent
civilians at 45 degree angles. Chirega iyi tisiye yakadaro because ndingauya
ndikapedzerwa shungu.

I hear
Zanu PF has reactivated its terror machine vana Border Gezi, Green Bomber or
the national youth service. We all know the crimes committed by these
indoctrinated fools. Why reactivating the green bombers now? Are you realizing
that 2023 will not be a walk in the park as you anticipated? Do you need these
green bombers to terrorise our people like what happened in 2008. Let me tell
you something iwe ED neteam rako, we are not afraid of the green bombers. Let
them come and Mapombi will deal with them. Enough is enough. Chamisa I hope you
are with me on this one. Make no mistake about it because these green bombers
will be used in 2023. They will do all the dirty work for ED. I hope the
vanguard will protect us. I would love to see MDC Alliance activating its
vanguard now. Mapombi will come join the vanguard without doubt. We will not be
terrified forever kkkk. That is just anger talking semunhu atambura nenhamo.
But vana veZimbabwe let us not be used mhani imi. What do you benefit kana
uchipisa imba yemumwe weganda dema.

To all
the youth out there I say to you please refuse to be used to protect these old
guys. They want to stay in power and ruin our lives yet they say we are the
future. They want to take us to that stupid Chitepo School of Ideology so that
we are diverted from real issues and be a passive generation. We will speak against
all the ills and no amount of intimidation will ever work. Bring those green
bombers tinopedzerana. Someone whispered in my ear that the green bombers will
be put on pay roll. Where will the money come from when you can’t even give our
beloved teachers enough money to lead a basic life? These green bombers are the
majority of ghost workers who have for long been chocking our wage bill. Don’t
abuse our youth with this green bomber thing please. I have said enough regai
ndinokanga zvangu maputi for lunch but before I go I am happy that Biti and his
team have bounced back on Parliament. Hanzi muchinda uya anonzi Chikanda does
not have the legal authority to fire anyone kkkk. What a circus. How will Biti
then say the courts have been captured by Zanu PF when he won this challenge?
Zanu PF has scored on this one. They can now argue that their hands are off the
judiciary. Poltical parties must learn to respect the electorate. Regai
ndinokanga zvangu maputi for lunch. Mboko imboko.

Green light for Sese Irrigation Scheme

The government has given the green
light for the establishment of the Sese Irrigation Scheme which is meant to
boost crop production and turn around the economic fortunes of Chivi’s Ward 20 community
and the whole district at large.

The irrigation scheme will be supplied
by water from Tugwi River which will be fed by the Muzhwi Dam.

Chivi District Development Coordinator
(DDC) Innocent Matingwini gave permission to councillor Alec Nhundu’s to start the
irrigation scheme.

Nhundu confirmed the developments saying
that the Sese Irrigation Scheme will help the community realize its agriculture
potential for subsistence and commercial purposes.

“The irrigation scheme will help our
community especially the youth, less privileged, and also the district at
large,” said Nhundu.

The project will focus on cash crops which
will enable people to realize profits from their toil.

“Tugwi River will supply water to the
project and feed the earth dams for back up,” said Nhundu.

The irrigation scheme is in line with
the government’s vision 2030 of ensuring food security and nutrition in the
country.

Matingwini advised the councilor and
the community to link up with departments such as Agritex, ZINWA, Veterinary
Services and many others to ensure that there is efficiency and effectiveness
throughout the project.

Absence of mortuary, ambulance, doctor defines Nyajena Hospital

0

Brighton
Chiseva

Having been built in the 1930s, Nyajena Rural Hospital has
not seen major developments to match modern hospital standards despite having a
large catchment area and the absence of mortuary, ambulance and a resident
doctor is among chief problems facing the institution.

The hospital serves the whole of Chief Nyajena area which
encompasses Masvingo South Constituency and part of Masvingo Central which is
under Chief Shumba.

The hospital’s catchment area stretches across Mutirikwi River
in the northern side to Majiri area and to eastern side it goes into Zaka
District where people from areas like Musenyereki, Mushaya, Mudzara and
Charingeno areas.

The hospital is a referral centre for a number of clinics
like Musvovi, Guwa, Chisase and Mushaya and will soon have two more clinics
that is Mavizhu and Makoho which are under construction.

Influential legislators like the famous Edson Zvobgo and his
successor Walter Mzembi did little or nothing to improve the health institution
though they have been at the helm of key ministries.

During his initial campaign stages around 2005, Mzembi
promised to provide transport and allowances for a doctor to commute from
Masvingo town to the hospital while a doctor’s house was being constructed.

However, having served as minister in different ministries for
more than 10years until his ouster in the 2017 coup, Mzembi failed to own up to
his promise.

The hospital has been running without a mortuary for more
than four decades with the one that was there said to have been closed down in
the 70s because there was no electricity and was later connected in the 90s.

The situation has proven to be harder for the locals who
were forced to bury their relatives within a short period.

The alternative is to liase with the Renco Mine authorities
to use their morgue or use the Masvingo Provincial Hospital mortuary.

The doctor problem at the institution is being mitigated by
the Community Based Aid Programme (CBAP) which brings in doctors on regular
basis to attend to critical cases.

The doctors under the CBAP outreach programme also visits
other local clinics, a development that has helped to saved money and time for
people and also eased pressure for Nyajena Hospital staff.

CBAP has been providing medical supplies to the Nyajena
Hospital for a long time through its other programmes like the Home Based Care
(HBC) mainly related to HIV and AIDS.

CBAP Director Samuel Mhungu said if resources permits they
would want to facilitate for a resident doctor to be stationed at the hospital.

“If we get resources, we would want to make sure that there
is a resident doctor here. Currently we only afford to bring the doctor on
monthly basis and we would want to do more for the community if we get more
resources,” said Mhungu.

Ward 25 councillor Livison Mudzonga, whose area covers the area
right round Renco Mine, told TellZim News that the institution was a referral
for a number of clinics in the area but had no requisite facilities for it to
perform its role as a referral hospital.

Mudzonga sung praises for the local legislator Claudious
Maronge whom he said helped them to get help from Renco Mine which in turn provided
material for the construction of a mortuary which is now at window level.

“We have a better legislator now who facilitated for us to
get help from Renco Mine which provided building material for our mortuary
which is at window level and we as the community provide labor,” Mudzonga.

He went on to say that the mine authorities promised to provide
material for fully equipped admission wards as the hospital currently has small
wards which accommodate few patients and have old beds and worn out mattresses.

Mudzonga lamented the state of the road and Tetenu river
bridge, which is about 300 metres from the health institution, which links
people from Ward 23, Mushawasha and Majiri with the hospital saying a number of
people have died failing to cross the bridge to the clinic during the rainy
season because the bridge is too low and the road is damaged.

“People have died and babies have been delivered just a few
hundred meters away from the hospital after failing to cross the bridge because
it gets flooded during the rainy season. The road is also damaged that it
becomes difficult to rush critical patients in public vehicles,” said Mudzonga.

Mudzonga said the hospital needed a standby ambulance to ferry
critical patience to Masvingo and said a lot of lives have been lost while
people were waiting for an ambulance from Masvingo.

Gutu RDC commissions 35 motorbikes for councilors

Gutu RDC CEO Alexander Mutembwa

Precila Takabvirakare

In a
move widely viewed as a boost on service delivery, the Gutu Rural District
Council (RDC) has procured 35 motorbikes for its councillors to facilitate
effective service delivery and engagement.

The
motorbikes, bought on a loan facility for the councillors, were supplied by
Perfoma Plus Company in Harare and was each bought for $109 000 in l0cal
currency.

Gutu
RDC Chief Executive Officer (CEO) Alexander Mutembwa said they decided to buy the
motorbikes because councilors were finding it difficult to cover the length and
breadth of their wards which was affecting service delivery in terms of
engagement and feedback.

“We
decided to buy these motorbikes for our councilors because they had complained
that they were failing to cover all parts of their wards because of distance
since most of the wards are very big and we hope service delivery will now be
improved.

“We
bought 32 motorbikes instead of 41 because some councilors cited that they have
personal cars so they do not need the bikes with others citing various personal
reasons,” said Mutembwa.

He said
the councilors were not being given the motorbikes for free, it is a loan
scheme whereby each councilor is going to pay and equivalent of US$47 per month
for 36 months and this will be deducted from councillors’ allowances.

Chilonga bridge reconstruction set for 2022

Terrence
Ndowora

Minister of Finance and Economic Development
Prof Mthuli Ncube last week delivered ‘sweet’ news for the people of Chilonga
saying the government will embark on the reconstruction of the Chilonga Bridge
in 2022.

The Chilonga Bridge, which connects
Chiredzi South and Chiredzi town, has been impassable during the rainy season
owing to its low lying nature shutting people out from social and economic

Prof Ncube, who more often than not
indicates left while turning right, said that the government was aware of the
plight of the people of Chilonga and plans have already been set in motion to
reconstruct the bridge.

“I visited Chilonga Bridge in Chiredzi
last year, the bridge has to be fixed and the government has a budget to fix it.
The government this year is focusing on
re-designing of the bridge but construction should start next year,” said Prof
Ncube.

Chilonga Bridge has been a cause of concern
for the people in Chiredzi South for a long time with lives being lost as
people tried to cross the flooded bridge during the rainy season.

“I noticed that the Chilonga community
had to detour about 60km just to get across the bridge and some lost their
lives while trying to cross the flooded bridge.

“The government is committed to address
this problem,” said Ncube.
