GZU Zinasu victory under threat

...as
Zicosu, YardSC challenge election results
Courage Dutiro
The
Zimbabwe Congress of Students Union (Zicosu) and Youth Advocacy for Reform and
Development Students Congress (YardSC) have challenged the outcome of the
recent Great Zimbabwe University (GZU) Students Representative Council (SRC)
elections.
The
elections, held on May 09, were won by the Zimbabwe National Students Union
(Zinasu) but the other two rivals want the election results nullified.
In
the elections, Zinasu clinched seven strategic posts including the presidency
post and the secretary general’s post but Zicosu and YardSC claim the elections
were held under conditions that were not free, fair and transparent.
A
petition filed to the Electoral Supervisory Council (ESC) by candidates of the
aggrieved unions claims that Schedule ‘A’ section 1.2 of the constitution,
which calls for the use of modern voting methods to ensure transparency, was
not followed.
“It
is upon our view that the constitution was disregarded since the elections did
not safeguard transparent and tenets of democracy. All polling stations at city
campus ran out of ballot papers and also at Robert Mugabe School only few
students voted. At down town polling station 209, students casted their votes
as per the voters roll but 298 where found in ballot boxes,” reads part of the
petition.
The
petition also claims that the polls were marred by intimidation of voters and
agents at such polling stations as the Robert Mugabe School of Education.
The
aggrieved camps claim the ESC denied many students their right to vote due to
the shortage of material.
They
allege that ballot paper inspection was never done before elections and the
quantity and quality of the ballot papers were not known to the candidates.
The
ESC has disagreed claims that the polls were not done in good faith and were
contested under protest. It has, however, agreed that the loser have a genuine
case in their questions regarding the freeness and fairness of elections.
GZU
Vice Chancellor, Professor Rungano Zvabgo had not made a decision by the time
of writing but some students have warned against nullifications of the results.
“We
know that the leadership of the university supports Zicosu which is associated
with Zanu PF. Let them not dare nullify the results as they did in 2016 when
they lost because this time around, the university will be ungovernable,” said
one student.
Zvobgo
nullified the 2016 polls citing many irregularities but the move was criticised
by some as a ploy to rescue Zicosu which had suffered heavy losses.
At
national political level, Zinasu is aligned to opposition MDC politics.

A tale of two ‘illegitimate’ Presidents

It has been one hell of a week and Mapombi has been
following the events closely ndakati zvangu zete kuno kuChitima. Wakafa havana
chawakaona chokwadi kkkk. Chinhu chaora ichi.
We now have two illegitimate presidents one running
the country and another running the biggest opposition party, the useless Joram
Gumbo was dropped and replaced by chibaba chedevelopment, chibabest Fortune
Chasi but I don’t know what magic he has up his sleeves to resolve the fuel and
energy crisis. I hope Chasi urinates petrol and or diesel because akakandirwa
nyoka mhenyu.
Mapombi is baffled, I hear we are stuck with Panonetsa
Mangudya for the next five years again after Dambudzo renewed his contract.
Cry my beloved Zimbabweans, Zanu PF has once again
successfully diverted your attention from the bread and butter issues and given
you something to fight and argue about, good job ED and team.
Mapombi is in a good mood thanks to one brave Chief
Ndiweni from the City of Kings. Murume uyu ndiye murume pane vamwe varume. He
told Dambudzo kuti I don’t recognise you kkkk and your term will be short
lived.
The Chief has been described as a national security
threat by none other than Mr IBu. Chimurume chiya ndakachivenga hangu. They
have tried to cow him down but he has remained resilient defending his people
both black and white. Stand up to tyranny Chief Ndiweni, Mapombi supports you.
I told you that there is drought of thinking in Zanu
PF which is why tapinzwa mugomba kudai. Muchinda wescarf yake uya hapana
chinoziikanwa and his wife Auxillia is fast becoming another Dr Stop it.
Kkkkk iye aripiko mazuvano warova Dr Stop it. Mukadzi
anga akaoma hake uya. Mumuromo make maiva makareruka but akatiudza hake chokwadi
about President Mnangagwa. We chose to ignore her and called her stupid but
tava kuzipigwa manje.
Mapombi being a woman of stature, would like to give
some advice to The First Lady and Health Ambassador Auxillia Mnangagwa that
this country is not their private enterprise which they can do whatever they
want with. Auxillia mumwe wangu, stay home, cook for your husband and do other
things to keep yourself busy and leave the running of the country to those who
rigged into office. Mukadzi uyu tikanatsa kumupa nguva yake anogona kutinetsa
mangwana, so Stop It!!!
But Dambudzo does not care at all. Shuwa kuwedzera
dzimwe five years on the term of office for Mangudya who has made our lives a
living hell. We thought Dambudzo would have mercy on us and fire this Panonetsa
guy but alas, kunetsa kunobhadhara wena kkkk. Takakutadzireiko iyesu nhai
Dambudzo chaita utidaro nhasi.
We should not be surprised, after all, this is the
President who once said his biggest challenge since taking over power from
Uncle Bob is being humble. By the way, the only way to power is to take it
because power is not inherited, ask Dambudzo and Chamisa.
Now Mapombi hears that they want to take power from
Chamisa kumudzosera back kuna 2014 kwaanga ari secretary for research and
policy in MDC kkkkk. Zanu PF inonzi tamba wakachenjera otherwise unonyura. They
have realised that Chamisa is a hot head and the only way to neutralise him is
to make him illegitimate. An illegitimate Dambudzo and an illegitimate Chamisa
kkkk, the struggle is real.
I don’t know anything about the law but I think this
judgement by the High Court is nothing but an insult to our judiciary system.
Zanu PF has successfully made a mockery of our police and army. We used to
respect these institutions but now they have been reduced to a laughing stock.
This is the same way our justice system is headed.
Akushaisai hope here Chamisa zvekuti mabva
mamumorongera hondo kudai. But Chamisa kachowo kanazvo, why do you refuse to
dialogue with others. But Dambudzo must be serious with the suffering masses.
How can you dialogue with the likes of Brian Mteki who got only one vote in the
length and breadth of Masvingo Province?
Mapombi doesn’t get angry easily but I was infuriated
when one of the losers dialoguing with Dambudzo recorded himself saying they
are chopping our money at Rainbow Towers Hotel in the capital. Hanzi tiri kudya
mari yenyika vana Chamisa vanchingoramba. And we expect these guys to move the
country forward? Munhu arikutovhunduka zvake hotera. They are all singing for
their supper and showering praises on Mnangagwa who apparently has captured
them all, except for Chamisa.
Chamisa has always said Dambudzo is illegitimate and
took him to the Constitutional Court but the court ruled to Dambudzo’s favour.
Now the court has labelled Chamisa illegitimate raising serious questions like,
What the hell is going on? Now we have two illegitimate presidents kkkk. Zvakuda
vakuru vanofamba naJesu izvi.
Chamisa atova illegitimate nguvai ipapa. Chamisa is an
idea whose time has come. Let him do his thing please. No amount of spanners
you can throw in his way will stop the young man. We have suffered enough and
we need change. Chero mukati illegitimate Chamisa tinomira naye. Ndiye akasiiwa
naSave. Mapombi can tell you that they just want to take all the party assets
from Chamisa’s MDC and give them to Khupe and I know fighting this case in the
Zanu PF courts is a waste of time because the outcome tese toiziva.
But I have faith in the fulcrum and the pith, Thabani
Mpofu. I like it when a young generation fight from one corner kwete zvana
Madhuku nemusoro banga hanzi Khupe is the legitimate president of MDC, which
MDC nhai Madhuku.
You can strip Chamisa of all the assets, moveable or
immoveable, but the man is very popular. The plan is to cripple Chamisa and
weaken him because 2023 Zanu ichanyara chero kubirira kwacho. Tatambura enough
mhani mazivanhu imi.
Ini Mapombi handisi dofo stereki zvekuti nyika ikanaka
I can even get a good job. Ndinotodawo kubva kuno kuChitima nekudyawo chikafu
chakanaka kwete zvemabanana akaora aya nekurarira maputi.
But chero hangu ndisiri that conversant with the legal
processes, Zanu PF ndinoitenda nekuti yatizivisa zvakawanda. Takutoonerawo
zvimwe kulaw ikoko. Mapombi can tell you that the High Court judgement is a
brutum fulmen kkkk.
I have said enough and I will end here. I can’t wait
for May 24 to May 26 tinogadza this illegitimate young man. But to Chamisa I
say, you brought this on yourself young man kkkkk. How can you say you will
drag Dambudzo to dialogue kicking and screaming? Uri mudziva reNgwena chikomana
tread carefully. Wapihwa the first warning and we wait to see how it will end.
Regai ndinokanga hangu maputi angu before ndanzi ndotaura chokwadi. Mboko
imboko.

Rutenga businessman turns to court as girlfriend refuses to release underwear

Cephas Shava
MWENEZI – A
married prominent Rutenga businessman
Goodman Maburutse, who owns the popular Linger Longer Night Club and several
booking houses, has approached the courts to force his girlfriend release his
underwear that he left at her place in Beitbridge.
The
relationship has now gone sour and the girlfriend is refusing to hand over the
clothing.
The
matter was heard by magistrate Mandlenkosi Ndlovu after Maburutse dragged her
ex-girlfriend Patricia Shumba to the Civil Court seeking a protection order.
Maburutse
told the court that Shumba was refusing to release some of his clothes
including underwear and was pestering him through unwanted visits and demands
to be formerly introduced to family members as his wife.
“Your
Worship, the woman was my girlfriend but she is constantly visiting my
workplace demanding to be introduced to my family as my wife. When our
relationship went sour, she took my phone and logged onto my Facebook account
and began to post my photos alleging that I snatched other people’s wives.
“Besides
that, she has some of my clothes which she is refusing to release. I no longer
have any peace in my life because of this woman,” Maburutse said.
Shumba
admitted visiting Maburutse and admitted that she soiled his name on social
media out of anger.
“We
were in some partnership with Maburutse but now he is refusing to give me my
money. On the issue of the clothes and underwear, I tried to give them back to
him saying some of them were missing and will only take them once I released
them all,” Shumba told the court.
After
full hearing of the matter magistrate Ndlovu granted Maburutse the protection
order and ordered Shumba not to visit his ex-boyfriend’s residence and
workplace.
Many
people believe jilted women can use their ex-lovers’ underwear to produce juju
and cast evil spells on the owners as a way of revenge.

Zaka teacher steals school window frames, walks scot free

Brighton Chiseva

ZAKA – There is suspicions
of corruption at Zaka police camp after a Jinjika Secondary School teacher who allegedly
stole six window frames and clocks seems to have gotten away with it.
Sources told
TellZim News Shadreck Chitsama stole the six window frames from the school
storeroom which he had opened using a duplicate key but was seen by a pupil who
stays in the school cottage.
Chitsama is said
to have hidden the window frames near the school but a security guard followed
a spoor and recovered the loot.
“The guard and
teachers including the deputy head Mason Manyadze recovered the frames after a
pupil made a tip-off,” said a source.
Chitsama later
tried to sell the clocks at the nearby Veza business centre but an alert ward
councillor privy to the alleged theft went and took away one for use as
exhibit.
Upon being
quizzed, Chitsama reportedly confessed and sought a hearing with the school
authorities and asked for forgiveness.
The matter is
said to having been reported to the Zaka district education offices after which
the case died a natural death as it was not taken forward.
School
Development Committee (SDC) chairperson Chanson Mapfuwa confirmed the incident
and said the parents were calling for the culprit’s arrest and removal from the
school.
“It’s true that
he brought back the stolen property and asked for forgiveness but parents no
longer want him at school. We are appealing to authorities to intervene on our
behalf and make sure that he is arrested and transferred,” said Mapfuwa.
Zaka District
School Inspector (DSI) Samson Chidzurira said he was aware of the matter but
could not give greater details.
“I can give you
finer details next week as we are still gathering more information. I would
want to believe that the matter was reported to the police,” said Chidzurira.
Zaka West
legislator Ophias Murambiwa confirmed knowledge of the incident and said he was
shocked by the lack of lack of seriousness by which the case had been handled.
“I know of the
incident. The councillor briefed me on the matter and I was shocked the case is
not being handled seriously. I will do a follow up and make sure that the
matter is dealt with by the police,” said Murambiwa.

‘Aippa repeal unconvincing’

Courage Dutiro
The
Media Institute of Southern Africa (Misa) Zimbabwe has claimed government’s
commitment to the media reform agenda was questionable, saying bills being
advanced to replace the Access to Information and Protection of Privacy Act
(Aippa) were equally draconian.
Addressing
media practitioners at the Civic Centre on Saturday in belated commemorations
of the 2019 World Press Freedom Day, Misa Zimbabwe director Thabani Moyo said
if the three bills are passed in their current form, it would be more or less
of the same.
“The
three bills that are meant to replace Aippa would not be the kind of ideal
legislation that you want to enjoy your freedom as the media. They make small
compromises and sneak in new restrictions that are as bad as those contained in
Aippa,” said Moyo.
The
three bills government has advanced to replace Aippa are Data Protection Bill,
Freedom of Information Bill and Zimbabwe Media Commission Bill.
Moyo
said the Zimbabwe Media Commission Bill, for instance, would concentrate all
media regulation power in the Zimbabwe Media Commission when the ideal thrust
is a move towards self-regulation.
He
also said provisions in the Freedom of Information Bill to the effect that data
requested by the media could only be released in its original form was an
indirect attack on access to information.
“We
know that some data is stored in safe formats meaning that if it is released in
its storage format, you would not make any sense out of it. That provision
actually means if the data is encrypted, it will be given to you exactly in
that format and you will not be able to read it,” said Moyo.
He
also attacked the Broadcasting Services Act amendment bill, saying it would
stunt the development of the broadcasting industry and stifle the community
radios initiative if it gets passed in its current form.
“The
bill restricts foreign ownership in broadcasters to not more than 25 percent.
Now, who will come to invest in that sector when you are not allowed to have a
controlling stake? The broadcasting sector is a capital intensive industry and
many locals cannot make it alone.
“The
bill also bans broadcasting stations from receiving donated equipment and that
alone kills the community radios initiative because our communities are too poor
to afford their own broadcasting equipment,” said Moyo.
He
urged journalists to participate in public consultations on the bills and make
contributions on what they think must be changed.
Great
Zimbabwe University (GZU) Media lecturer, Last Alfandika said it was surprising
that government was still afraid of community radios and was moving against
international standards.
“Real
community radio stations are yet to be licenced although government pretends
that by licencing regional commercial stations, it has licenced community
radios. Our understanding is that community radio stations must not be driven
by the commercial imperative and must be apolitical but if you look at what has
been presented as community radios, they are commercial stations owned by people
or organisations with close links to the ruling party,” said Alfandika.

Man jailed for stealing US$1

Tendai Mange
A
22-year-old Kadoma man was recently slapped with 30-days jail sentence by
Masvingo magistrate Dambudza Malunga after being found guilty for stealing US$1
from a handbag.
Talent
Mukwinda was charged with theft as defined in Section (113) (1) of the Criminal
Law (Codifications and Reform) Act: Chapter 9:23.
It
was the State’s case that on April 08, Mukwinda went to Fadzai Mujoni’s work
place, who is employed at the Consumer Council in Masvingo, took US$1 and
RTGS$99 from Mujoni’s handbag which was outside the door of the office on the
ground and went away.
The
accused was seen by Loice Zhou who quickly alerted the complainant and they
both followed Mukwinda.
Mukwinda
was taken to the police and Mujoni recovered all her money.
Mukwinda
told the court that he was drunk on the day in question and he did not really
know what he was doing.
“I
am not a thief but was very drunk and that’s why I acted in that manner” said
Mukwinda.

Mwenezi East MP Omar donates to Chimbudzi Clinic

Cephas Shava

MWENEZI – As
part of efforts to improve access to basic healthcare in the district, Mwenezi
East Member of Parliament (MP) Joosbi Omar recently donated various items to Chimbudzi
Clinic.
The
gifts handed over to the clinic’s staff by Omar during his recent constituency
tour in Ward 4 under Chief Mawarire included a wheelchair, a hospital bed,
wooden stool, steel cupboard and an adjustable table.
Addressing
audience who gathered to witness the handover of the property, Omar acknowledged
the quandary that the country’s health sector finds itself in and pledged to
continue supporting his constituency.
He
said health facilities in the district needed as much support of leaders and
well-wishers as they could get.
“We
are aware of the various problems being encountered from across the district
especially with regards to shortages of equipment and drugs. We will continue
to put a lot of effort, together with the responsible authorities, to ensure
that lives are saved at various health institutions,” said Omar.
People
who witnessed the donation said they appreciated the MP’s gesture, adding that
a lot still needed to be done to ensure optimum services at public health
institutions in the district.
“There
is no medication at the clinics at the district hospital. You don’t find even
painkillers there and what the nurses are doing is just to make a diagnosis and
give you a prescription which you will then have to use to purchase the medication
at private pharmacies. Most people here do not afford private healthcare,” said
an elderly resident of Ward 4.

Zimparks fails to catch large python at Zinwa offices

Zimparks only managed to catch the smaller of the two pythons spotted at Zinwa offices

Anymore Magawa
MASVINGO – The
Zimbabwe Parks and Wildlife Authority (Zimparks) was recently called to catch
two large pythons spotted at the Zimbabwe National Water Authority (Zinwa) Masvingo
provincial offices but they managed to catch only one.
The
Zinwa offices are situated at Number 717 Mineral Road in the industrial area.
Some
Zinwa employees now say they are no longer feeling safe working at the premises
as they do not know whether or not the other python, which is said to be much bigger
than the captured one, is close by.
Sources
said the sneaky reptiles were seen by a security guard slithering towards the
guardroom on May 08 at around 21:00hrs.
The
frightened guard then fled the guard room and called his superiors who then
called the Zimparks provincial offices.
“Zimparks
personnel took their time and went to the premises very late. They
then managed to catch one but the other one managed to flee,” said a source.
Other
sources said it was horrible that Zimparks had failed to do their job properly
and exposed staff at the premises to unnecessary jitters.
Staff
at the Zimparks provincial office refused to comment about the matter and
referred questions to their national spokesperson Tinashe Farawo who said the
incident was a non-issue.
“Snakes
like to move around in grassy and bushy surroundings. There is nothing we can
do about it,” said Farawo.
Pythons
are by law an endangered species that should not be killed or unlawfully
captured. Although they are not venomous, they are deadly predators that kill
their prey by constriction.

“From a victim of war to the leader of peace”

In May this year, marking the 6th
Annual Commemoration of the Declaration of World Peace, about 70 countries host
various citizen-participating events and peace walk. This event is aimed to
mobilize a worldwide network of youths and citizens to spread a culture of
peace in respective communities and to urge for the cooperation for building
sustainable peace in the global society. Especially, Seoul in South Korea,
where the Declaration of World Peace was proclaimed, will have the
commemoration on May 25th.
With 30,000 youths from all over the world
present, the Declaration was announced on 25 May, 2013 by an international
peace NGO called Heavenly Culture, World Peace, Restoration of Light (HWPL) in
Special Consultative Status with the UN Economic and Social Council (ECOSOC)
and associated with the UN Department of Global Communications (DGC).
Chairman Man Hee Lee of HWPL, a war veteran,
stated the background of proclaiming the Declaration. “We cannot claim to
desire peace and continue to provoke one another, causing conflict for the sake
of valuing our own national interests above those of others. This will only
take the lives of the youth, wasting them in the futility of war. This is not a
legacy we can leave to future generations.”
The Declaration addresses the value of shared
effort of all members of society as they work as peace messengers. It includes
principles such as that the heads of each state to sign an international
agreement—a commitment to bring all wars to an end, that all youth to unite in
an effort to stop wars and pursue the restoration of peace, and that the media
to report responsibly and promote a message of peace to the world.
Such values from the Declaration led to drafting
the Declaration of Peace and Cessation of War (DPCW) as an advanced designation
of global responsibility to establish a legally binding international legal
framework for peace. This year’s event will be focused on the “Peace Letter
Campaign” led by the International Peace Youth Group (IPYG), an affiliated
youth organization of HWPL. The campaign is aimed to urge for the support of
the heads of each state to develop it into a legally binding document by
submitting it as a resolution to the UN.
According to the official of HWPL, the
foundation of the DPCW is to build a world of peace secured by the rule of law
that is based on the universal values including coexistence, cooperation, and
mutual respect. The 10 articles and 38 clauses with the settlement of a dispute
and measures for sustainable peace address the international cooperation at the
governmental level as well as the role of individual of the global society to
achieve peace.
At the commemoration of this year, the
participants will call for the replies against the heads of state for the peace
letters that have been already sent to them and the messages of peace written
by citizens will be delivered to high-level officials of governments and
international organizations in 193 different countries.

Tsiga Secondary headmaster divides school with holiday lessons money

TellZim Reporter
ZAKA
– There are serious divisions at Tsiga Secondary School after the school head
divided the money raised through April holiday lessons among all teachers
including those who refused to teach during the holidays.
Sources
said the school head Godfrey Tinarwo and some teachers ganged up and refused to
accept the RTGS$20 per child April holidays fees saying it was too little for
them.
Together
with a building studies teacher Atmore Musunga and senior lady Mawana who
teaches fashion and fabrics, Tinarwo felt $20 was not worth the trouble and
stayed away from the holiday lessons.
Other
teachers, however, accepted the offer and taught pupils during the holidays but
only for them to be later on forced to share the proceeds of their hard work
with the teachers who rejected the offer.
“The
teachers who came to teach during the holidays are very unhappy with the
headmaster’s decision to divide the money among everybody including those who refused
to come for holiday lessons. I think the aggrieved teachers are justified
because the headmaster acted corruptly. How then do you encourage hard work and
commitment if those who are choosy are rewarded the same way as those who want
only the best for children,” said a source.
Another
source said after noticing that many children had paid up for holiday lessons
resulting in a substantial amount of money being raised, the choosy teachers became
greedy and sought to have a share.
“They
went to the headmaster and struck a suspicious deal that allowed them to
provide their own extra lessons over the weekend and be paid from the holiday
lessons money. It is ridiculous because they were paid the money upfront before
they had even worked for it. There is so much grievances among the good
teachers and it’s affecting the children. Policy does not even allow teachers
to be paid for weekend lessons.
“The
headmaster is mismanaging the school and creating divisions through his
favouritism and corruption. Since he took over from Fanuel Mukokoromba, the
school began to decline and many teachers are seeking transfers.
TellZim
News managed to contact some of the disgruntled teachers who refused to speak
about the issue saying they feared victimisation.
Tinarwo,
however, refuted the allegations as malicious, claiming there was unity at the
school and that the holiday lessons went on smoothly.
“My
teachers and I work very well together. Those allegations are not emanating
from my teachers. I also personally do not teach any ‘O’ level class so I
cannot take the money,” said Tinarwo.
Provincial
Education Director (PED) Zedius Chitiga said the report was concerning and
promised to make an investigation and deal with it.
“We
haven’t received that report yet but we will do our own investigations. I can
assure you that if I receive the case, we will deal with it in the proper
manner,” said Chitiga.
