WCoZ petitions City of Masvingo over water crisis

WCoZ members hand over their petition to Mayor Maboke
Clayton Shereni
The Women
Coalition of Zimbabwe (WCoZ) Masvingo Chapter recently conducted a workshop at
the Mucheke Hall where it was agreed that a petition will be send to council
over poor service delivery punctuated by recent water shortages.
The petition was
later sent to city council officials as part of efforts to force them to
urgently address a severe water crisis.
Many parts of
the city are now in their fourth weeks without a single drop of water coming
through the taps.
WCoZ Masvingo chapter
chairperson, Joyce Mhungu said it was high time the city took heed of people’s
cries and took urgent corrective action.
“This situation
is a threat especially to us women because we wake up in the wee hours to go
out and fetch water. We are vulnerable to robbers and rapists we cannot
withstand the pressure at the boreholes and water bowsers’ delivery points.
“We are
going to deliver our two petitions covering issues of lack of adequate water
supplies and poor refuse collection schedules to the city council leadership
including the mayor, town clerk, city engineer and director of health.
Participants
also slammed council workers in charge of bowser water distribution for corruption.
“We have
seen some people getting water from bowsers even before the bowser had reached
its destination. They give water to their relatives and friends before anybody
else,” said one female participant.

Igwe promises better album come March

Primrose Chikanya
Sungura prodigy Peter Moyo has
promised that his upcoming album will be the best ever, saying his short yet
eventful presence in the music industry so far had helped him to continuously
refine his talent.
Popularly known as Igwe among his
legion of fans, the young musician, who is son to the late Sungura legend
Tongai Moyo ‘Dhewa’, has given March 2019 as the deadline for the release of
his much-vaunted new album.
He said he often took his time to
complete working on a project because his beat was a bit different from any
other Sungura beat as he builds his own sounds from scratch and without
plagiarising other artists’ efforts.
“I have to sing meaningfully to
communicate solid messages that build relationships, families and communities.
It doesn’t have to be bubblegum music because our fan base is largely mature
people with serious life stories to relate,” said Moyo.
The Kwekwe-based singer said he
will be releasing an educative album to appreciate fans who support him by
sacrificing their precious time and money. He said on average, he got booked
each and every week.
The young Dhewa said he also had
real passion for football, and had been involved with Yadah FC but decided to
concentrate on music fulltime as a way of paying homage to his late father and
keeping his legacy alive.
He said he was also a car dealer
and a passionate farmer who appreciated the importance of making the best out
of any time and opportunity that one can get.
On allegations of numerous romantic
scandals and problems with women, Moyo said he was a faithful man who derived
no pleasure in breaking hearts or creating controversies.
“I don’t know where people
get what they say because I date one lady at a time but kana tatadza kunzwanana
should I not move on? I don’t want to be a disgrace and I am not what many
people think I am. Tingazvigone seiko pasina anoyemura,” he said.

Chauke’s deserted base from where he plied his illegal drug trade

MWENEZI – A
daring Rutenga drug dealer, Amos Chauke also known as “Chibaba” and notorious
for doing his business in broad daylight some few metres from the Mwenezi
Magistrates’ Court, has finally been arrested.
Chauke
was arrested while in possession of 500 grams and 24 twist of dagga.
He
appeared before magistrate Honest Musiiwa last Thursday and denied the charges
of unlawful dealing in dangerous drugs.
Chauke
told the court detectives were among this main clients.
He
was nonetheless convicted after full trial and sentenced to 12 months behind
bars, two of which were conditionally set aside, leaving him to serve an
effective 10 months imprisonment.
Testifying
in court during the trial, Detective Shumba said the police now considered
Chauke a security threat.
“We
have been receiving complaints from several parents who said their minor
children were now uncontrollable while others were becoming insane because of drugs
supplied by Chauke. We launched investigations and following a tip off, we
managed to catch Chauke supplying cannabis to his clients’ right at his base between
this Magistrates’ Court and Chikombedzi Road,” said Shumba.
The
State, led by Willard Chasi, convinced the court that on November 12 at around
15:00hrs, detectives found Chauke in possession of 500 grams and 24 twist of
dagga, while some of his four clients were busy smoking another twist.
Chauke’s
trial was the centre of attention as several top security officials within the district,
concerned residents and some of Chauke’s known clients as well as his suspected
dagga agents thronged the court to hear the case.

Gutu United Primary appeals for assistance

MPANDAWANA – Gutu
United Primary School has appealed to well-wishers to provide donations to fund
its resource unit for the improved teaching of children with various forms of
disabilities.
The
school’s programme for physically-challenged pupils started in the early 1970s
but has never been fully up due to lack of resources. The present classes has
33 pupils.
Gutu
United Primary head, Elizabeth Chitsva said the school was facing many problems
in its attempts to fully integrate children with special needs.
“We
are faced with many problems in our attempts to capacitate that area. We do not
have suitable teaching materials required for the special needs class. There is
a high rate of drop outs due to lack of transport; some pupils are wheelchair-bound
while others come from very far away. It’s difficult in this economy for
parents to send their children to school. We urgently need a helping hand,”
said Chitsa.
She
said the council-run school could do better if it was to be capacitated with
boarding facilities for children with various forms of disabilities.

G and N Mission Schools, a matter of success over progress

Cephas Shava

MWENEZI – G and N Secondary
will soon commission newly-built boarding facilities that will put the
privately-owned mission school among the best in Masvingo province.
G
and N Mission Secondary School, located at Rutenga growth point, has made
impressive strides of self-improvement since it was officially opened back in
2011.
The
school has found favour among parents and prospective pupils in the province
and beyond owing not only to its proximity to a main road – the Harare to
Beitbridge highway -but to its remarkable record as a place where minds are
nurtured.
With
fresh-looking classroom blocks and other learning facilities, it is hard not to
notice the school’s imposing presence in a place where no other educational investment
of that magnitude can be found.
G
and N school head, Blessed Chirove said the mission school had succeeded due to
its uncompromising work ethic premised in the Seventh Day Adventist (SDA) church
doctrine.
“It
is upon that foundation that we have built and sustained a school which is
famed not only for its excellent facilities but for its high grade academic
culture too. We are guided by a strong desire to mould young minds and lay the
foundation for highly rewarding careers for the children who pass through our
hands.
“We
have added state-of-the-art boarding facilities as part of our consistent
commitment to the improvement of the learning environment. We welcome the first
batch of children who will make use of these comfortable facilities,” said
Chirove.
She
said the school will soon upgrade to ‘A’ level so that pupils who complete
their ‘O’ levels will be able continue with their education at a familiar
environment.
Construction
of ‘A’ level classroom blocks will be completed early next year while a
spacious room has already been spared for use as a laboratory.
Outside
of the classroom, pupils can enjoy overseas trips that the school regularly
organises for research purposes and as a way of giving children first-hand
exposure to the global village.
In
Mwenezi district, G and N Mission Schools also run three primary schools while
G and N Nursery School is located in Masvingo Urban.

An Airforce of Zimbabwe
pilot based in Gweru last night, November 25, allegedly killed his girlfriend
after accusing her of dating his workmate, TellZim News has learnt.
The case was reported at
Gweru Central Police Station (RRB 3692653) by a nurse who attended the now
deceased at Gweru Provincial Hospital.
Police documents say that
Tashinga Musonza (29) assaulted his
girlfriend, Lucy Duve (32), after accusing her of cheating on him with George Mangwenjere,
a fellow flight lieutenant with the Airforce.
It is said Musonza
accused Duve – with whom he cohabited in Windsor Park – of being unfaithful,
but she denied the issue.
Musonza then took her to
Josiah Tongogara Airbase to clarify the issue with Mangwenjere, who also denied
the issue.
Musonza then began to
brutalise Duve.
Mangwenjere tried in vain to restrain Musonza and rushed
to seek assistance from a colleague.
When they came back to
the scene, they found Duve unconscious and a team rushed her to
Claybank Clinic where she was pronounced dead on arrival.
They were then referred
to Gweru Provincial Hospital where the sister-in-charge phoned the police
station to report the case.
By the time of writing,
Musonza was due to appear in court.

‘Chief Bere installation will not be reversed’

Fungai Mbetsa
Brighton Chiseva
Masvingo Provincial
Administrator (PA) Fungai Mbetsa said the installation of Phineas Tafirei as Chief
Bere following his appointment in July will not be reversed but has only been
postponed to a later date by Minister of Local Governance, July Moyo.
Mbetsa
said the appointment was made by President Emmerson Mnangagwa and the
installation had only been delayed but not cancelled.
“The
installation of Chief Bere was postponed by Minister Moyo for now and it is the
case with all the pending installations across the country.
“It
is the President himself who appointed Chief Bere through the office of Minister
Moyo so those who see the delay as a reversal need to know the facts of the
ground,” said Mbetsa.
The
Bere clan lost their chiefdom in 1925 during the colonial era.
As
a corrective measure, the Bere clan will get back their chiefdom which will
take the whole of Ward 4 which has been under Chief Zimuto and five other wards
under Chief Charumbira.
Chief
Charumbira, whose chiefdom stretches seven wards, will be left with only two
wards. Chief Charumbira is also facing a fierce fight from the Nemamwa clan who
believe they were robbed of their chieftaincy.
The
installation of Chief Bere was supposed to take place on July 30 but was
postponed after people from Charumbira stormed the venue saying they will not
allow another chief to be installed and take away their land.
Five
houses namely Mboko, Mambanje, Mupariri, Mudyiravanje and Makamuri are all in
line to the Bere throne.

Meet new Headman Zibwowa

                                                                 Headman Zibwowa
Brighton Chiseva
ZAKA – Mugomeri Village Head, Jeremiah Haruperi, has been appointed as Headman Zibwowa,
TellZim News has learnt.
In a letter seen
by TellZim News from the ministry of local governance to Zaka District
Administrator (DA) Ndeya Nyede, Haruperi’s appointment was with effect from October
30 this year.
“In terms
of Section 8 of the Traditional Leaders Act (Chapter 29:17), the minister has
with effect from 30 October 2018 appointed Jeremiah Haruperi as substantive
Headman Zibwowa of Zaka District,” reads part of the letter.
Nyede also
confirmed the development and said the installation date was up to Chief Nhema.
“The
installation program will be decided by Chief Nhema and he has been busy with
the budget   consultation meetings so we
will start by introducing the new headman to the people so that they know before
we install him.
“The Chief will
then have discussions with the family to set a date for the installation,”
said Nyede.
Haruperi also
said they were only waiting for the Chief’s call to do the installation. He
also said he will work to unite the people of Zibwowa and will work with other
leaders to foster development in the area.
Nhema who is
also a senator representing Chiefs said he will soon hold a meeting with the
Zibwowas and make an arrangement for the installation ceremony.
“I am
currently busy at parliament but I will soon have a meeting with them to
finalise the installation process,” said Chief Nhema
Haruperi is
replacing Stanford Zingwanda who was holding the position on acting basis
following his father’s death a few years ago.
Zibwowa is one
of the six headmen under Chief Nhema who include Chipinda, Muroyi, Magadze,
Chipenzi and Chamburukira.

Gweru residents threaten demos over water crisis

Cllr Makombe

Tinaani
Nyabereka

GWERU – Residents have
warned that erratic water cuts being experienced will force them to organise street
demonstrations, accusing council of not taking the crisis seriously.
Speaking
during a stakeholders meeting held in Mkoba recently, Gweru Residents and
Ratepayers Association (GRRA) president Cornelia Seliphiwe charged that council
was not taking the people’s suffering seriously.
“We
are afraid that we might have another case of typhoid in the city and we feel
short-changed by council which is failing to rectify this problem when we are
paying our rates every month. We need an urgent solution before we get fed up
talking,” Seliphiwe said.
A
Mkoba resident said she was disappointed that water bills were not declining
despite persistent water cuts.
“Our
bills remain high despite the water cuts we are facing. We often go for four
days without water but when your bill comes, it’s the same thing. This is
tantamount to pushing us into the streets to demonstrate,” she said.
In
response, Gweru mayor Josiah Makombe said it was untrue that council was not
worried, saying councillors had already directed management to fix the problems
and communicate with residents regularly.
“I
have already taken my management to task to look at the issue of water cuts
because I am as much worried and disturbed by the situation as everybody else.
“We
often get information on burst pipes and blocked valves. We are working hard to
restore ordinary water supplies,” said Makombe.
City
of Gweru recently announced it was drafting a strict water rationing regimen to
ensure that areas that have known no piped water for many years will have at
least a day’s supplies per week.

Bikita man kills two in-laws in witchcraft row

Tiyani Hahlani

A 44-year-old man allegedly killed his
mother-in-law
Sonika Mupura (69) and
brother in-law
Farirepi Muchazvirega (43) after
battering his wife over witchcraft.
The grisly incident occurred on the night of November 15.
Isau Komichi of Tanyanyiwa village under Chief Mazungunye was
arrested the following morning while his victims’ bodies were found in pools of
blood with multiple cuts on their heads.
“I can confirm receiving a report of murder involving a son
in-law who allegedly killed his two in-laws in Bikita. The suspect has been
arrested and will appear in court soon facing murder charge,” said Masvingo
provincial police spokesperson, Ass Insp Kudakwashe Dhewa.
TellZim
News learnt that on the day in question, Komichi was sleeping in their bedroom
hut together with his wife and their six-year-old son.
He
woke up in the night to find that their blanket was no longer there, and
started to accuse his wife of bewitching him, saying his left leg was also mysteriously
painful.
He
assaulted his wife and threatened to kill her but when their six-year-old son
heard the commotion, he rushed to alert Mupura.
Mupura
and her 12-year-old granddaughter then rushed to the couple’s homestead and found
Komichi still assaulting his wife. Komichi ordered Mupura to back off while
also threatening to kill her.
Sensing
danger, Mupura retreated but Komichi followed and caught her and then began
assaulting her with bare hands. He then picked a wooden log and assaulted her
several times on her head, seriously injuring her in the process.
Muchazvirega later
followed her mother but on arrival, the assailant pounced on him as well and
struck him with a brick on the head. As Muchazvirega tried to escape, he got
trapped on barbed wire and was hit by another brick.
After the assault,
Komichi went to Muchazvirega’s homestead looking for Eunice Muponi,
Muchazvirega’ wife but he failed to find her as she had found a good hiding
place.
Komichi then damaged
six window panes at Muchazvirega’s three-bedroomed house.
A fellow villager,
Christopher Mashamaire later reported the tragedy to the police, leading to the
arrest of Komichi.
