Trouble for Drunk Gutu doctor

Dr Mushuku

MPANDAWANA – A Gutu Mission Hospital medical doctor, Henry Harry Mushuku, who performed a Caesarean operation while drunk resulting in the death of Locardia Mbinda last year, has been ordered to go to rehab.
After more than a year of investigations, Mushuku was found guilty of negligence and working in theatre under the influence of alcohol.
The Ministry of Health and Child Care has ordered him to go to Parirenyatwa Hospital for rehabilitation.
Masvingo Provincial Medical Director (PMD) Dr Amadeus Shamu confirmed that judgement had been handed down but refused to shed light on the nature of the punishment.
“All I can say is proper punishment was given but I am not at liberty to tell you the nature of the punishment for publication,” said Shamu.
Close sources who spoke on condition of anonymity, however, said all the three people involved in the debacle were punished.
“Gutu District Medical Officer Dr Tapiwa Mupepe, Dr Mushuku and Pamunoda Muguti, the nurse who was on duty, were all found guilty. Dr Mupepe was given a warning, Mushuku was sent to rehab and Muguti is working under supervision,” said the source.
When asked for comment, Mupepe said he was charged for not being at work when the operation was done.
“My case was about absence from work for no reason. They said had I been there, the operation would not have been conducted. Everyone was found guilty as charged but I will appeal because I am not happy with the judgement,” said Mupepe.
After the botched operation, the now deceased was transferred to Masvingo Provincial Hospital where she died after a few hours but her child miraculously survived.top story

Marapira threatens to dispossess new sugarcane farmers

CHIREDZI – Lands, Agriculture and Rural Resettlement deputy minister, Davis Marapira has threatened to withdraw offer letters to hundreds of small-scale sugarcane farmers whom he accuses of illegally extending their plots.
Last week, Marapira addressed a gathering in Buffalo Range where he accused some farmers of allocating themselves land and others of failure to observe the boundaries of their plots.
“We have a challenge of farmers who are allocating themselves land mostly sugarcane farmers. If you don’t possess any offer letter of the land you are occupying, move out before it turns sour.
“Some sugarcane farmers are reportedly bribing our land officials in order for them to illegally extend their hectares. Those who did so should immediately report to our offices.
“The minister has a right to withdraw offer letters and allocate the land to law-abiding farmers. I received numerous reports of farmers who extended their land and I want to assure you that land auditors are on their way to look at these problems,” said Marapira.
Speaking to the same gathering, Commercial Sugarcane Farmers Association of Zimbabwe (CSFAZ) chairperson, Addmore Hwarare accused Farai Musikavanhu and Roy Bhila of illegally extending their farms.
“People like Bhila and Musikavanhu extended their land. They will suffer the consequences soon. They will soon lose all that land because auditors are already doing their job,” said Hwarare.
Musikavanhu and Bhika are Zanu PF members who want to contest for the Chiredzi West and North parliamentary seats respectively.business

Zanu PF NEC to decide fate of Midlands G40 MPs

pending issues to be finalised in preparation for primary elections

GWERU – The National Elections Commission (NEC) will decide the fate of alleged G40 members facing disciplinary action, with pending issues having to be resolved first before such party members could be allowed to participate in primary elections, Zanu PF Midlands secretary for information and publicity, Cornelius Mupereri has said.
The Midlands provincial elections directorate (PED) recently indicated that it did not have the power to recommend alleged G40 MPs like Jason Machaya, Chiratidzo Mabuwa and Fred Moyo to contest in the upcoming primary elections.
The directorate said the final decision will come from the NEC which was mandated to decide the suitability of candidates.
Speaking at a meeting in Gweru last week, Mupereri said the province was limited in the recommendations they could make.
“The position of the province concerning prospective candidates who are facing disciplinary hearing is that their cases need to be resolved first. It’s not, however, for the province to decide as the National Elections Commission will finalise.
“So what we will do is to highlight our recommendations and documents of the candidates and send them to the commission. They will then make a decision on whether a candidate is suitable to contest or not.
“We are happy that we have received an overwhelming response from aspiring candidates of all districts and only a few seats went uncontested. We largely have more than five aspiring contestants for each seat. It means people are very appreciative of the party and have a kin interest to represent the party,” said Mupereri.
Provincial chairperson, Daniel Mackenzie Ncube said the submission of CVs for seats in the senate, parliament, provincial council and local authorities had to be inspired by the desire to see the party winning.
“Our job as the provincial elections directorate was just to receive the CVs and make recommendations to members who are suitable to be nominated. So the final list will come from the NEC and the party’s ways are supposed to be followed in giving recommendations,” said Ncube.politics

Musiso head Tinago transfers

Emmaculate Tinago

Brighton Chiseva
ZAKA – Musiso High School head, Emmaculate Tinago is leaving the school after over seven years of a tumultuous tenure which, however, proved her to be an astute female school head.
Sources told TellZim News that Tinago and the Roman Catholic Church, who are the school’s responsible authority, were parting ways amicably despite some rough patches on their relations over the years.
When contacted for comment, Tinago was non-committal about her next move although sources said one prestigious private school had expressed interest in her.
“You can call after 1 May and I will tell you where I’m going. That’s when I will have a definite answer for you,” said Tinago
A source said Tinago had decided to aim higher after authorities had offered to transfer her to another school elsewhere.
“School heads were being shuffled so she weighed her options and decided to move on. Remember she has proved herself to be a strong female leader with much to offer. Rumour has it she will go either to Terry Goss or Edrrovale College.
“The new priest-in-charge was overriding her on almost everything and I think she got frustrated. They took her from a council school so I think she had expected better than to be moved to a lesser school at the end of it all,” said the source.
Despite several challenges, Musiso High, in terms of the quality of passes, steadily grew as one of the best schools in the province under the leadership of Tinago.education

Cllr Makope, in white shirt and black suit, works on a borehole in Mpofu village, Sagwari area
Cephas Shava
MWENEZI – Incumbent Zanu PF Ward 5 councillor, Master Makope who is also aspiring to run for the Mwenezi East parliamentary seat come the general election, has embarked on a borehole-fixing programme which he hopes will endear him with the people.
Makope started the work in Ward 13 under Chief Chitanga and has managed to fix three broken down boreholes that provide water to such isolated villages as Mutsipi, Chinowaniso and Mpofu.
In Mpofu, Sagwari area, Makope oversaw the rehabilitation of a borehole that had not been functional for a long time.
Mpofu village head, June Mpofu was pleased with the work done for his community, saying the borehole had remained dysfunctional for over a year.
“We thank Makope for helping us to fix the borehole that had not been working for more than a year. We had failed to find the needed resources to repair the borehole ourselves so our councillor came in handy to help us. People had been drinking water from unprotected sources all along.
“People in five villages that depend on the borehole had resorted to drinking water from distant dams and from holes dug in dry riverbeds (mifuku). With the borehole now functioning again, people are now drinking clean water,” said Mpofu.
Makope, who transported the borehole spare parts from Neshuro growth point at his own cost, said it was his desire to be there for the people who voted him into office.
The aspiring MP, who is likely to lock horns with current MP Joosbi Omar during the Zanu PF primary elections, said he will not stop doing the work which he said was critical in improving the welfare of rural people.politics

Mudzana is 4th-year Honours in Marketing student the GZU’s Mashava campus and is also pursuing a Diploma in Theology on church leadership.

Brighton Chiseva
MASVINGO – A total of 147 students last week took part in the Reformed Church University (RCU)’s third graduation ceremony which was held at the institution’s new main campus.
Of that number, 70 percent were females, marking a significant improvement in the representation of women in the university’s student base.
The ceremony was the first to be held at the new campus which became operational in February this year after moving from Morgenster Mission.
Female students numbered 103 while males were 44, a ratio which RCU acting Vice Chancellor, Dr Enos Chomutiri said testified to the university’s commitment a more gender balanced society.
Also present at the ceremony was the Minister of Higher and Tertiary Education, Professor Amon Murwira who said the education system should bring hope through its products, with universities being expected to be places where hope is found.
Murwira challenged graduates to be innovative and create their own jobs rather than to wait for the government to provide for them.
“Universities should be places of hope; our education system should bring hope through its products and our graduands should tell us what they can do for the nation using the skills they would have acquired in universities, not us telling them what to do,” said Murwira.
He urged the students to start small and become big, saying everybody should use available resources to innovate.
“You need to start small to become big but you need to do it fast. You cannot call yourself a hunter of big game when you have not caught even a mouse, you need to use the available resources. Those who constructed the Great Zimbabwe looked around and saw stones and made good use of them,” said Murwira.
Eight students graduated from the Faculty of Arts in Theology and Religious Studies while 29 were in the Faculty of Commerce studying for the Business Management degree.
A total of 19 students graduated with degrees in Public Administration while the rest graduated from the faculties of Education and Social Sciences.
Last year, RCU received three prestigious awards being the Award for Digital Financial Services Innovation and the Christian University of the Year Award.
The third accolade was taken by former Vice Chancellor, Professor Wiseman Magwa who was named Academic Leader of the Year.education
