Like an eagle above the clouds, Pamushana High School is flying high and is setting the pace for the rest yet no other school seems to have what it takes to mount a real challenge both in academics and sports.
Last week Pamushana High School held its annual prize giving day where their success story for the year 2017 was laid bare for all to see.
School head Johnson Madhuku said he was satisfied by their accomplishments in class and in the sports grounds.
“As is depicted by our school logon – an eagle going for its prey, Pamushana Chikoro Chemakondo continues to emulate the eagle: great vision, precision, swiftness in attack and taking its prey by surprise, diligence and excellence.
“Our academic prowess is unsurpassed at both ‘O’ and ‘A’ levels. In the 2014 ‘A’ level classes, we had 19 pupils with 15 points and above. In 2015, we had 38 pupils with 15 points and above. In 2016, we had 28 pupils with 15 points and above, 19 of them in sciences.
“We don’t only excel academically, but in the whole curriculum package we give to the learner; in sports, arts and culture,” said Madhuku.
Indeed, Pamushana High School has a story to tell regarding its largely successful sporting endeavours that have seen them winning some of the most prestigious awards of the year.
In the just ended Ministry of Primary and Secondary Education Nassaf games in Harare, Pamushana pupils performed remarkably well and got 1st position (gold) in 200 m courtesy of Kundai Maguranyanga who also won bronze in the 200 m category while representing Zimbabwe at the African Youth Championships in Algeria last July.
At the same Nassaf competitions, a form four female pupil took first position for the best cake making skills in the Food Technology Exhibition category. The school’s form six pupils also came first in Science Exhibitions with their automatic poultry feeding machine.
At international level, Pamushana fielded five netball players for the 2017 Cossasa games that were played in Lesotho. One of the players, Clarks Kwaramba is in the national netball team which did very well in Angola last July.
Madhuku revealed the school quiz team will represent Zimbabwe in the Regional Schools Quiz championship slated for Tanzania in February 2018.
He thanked the Commercial Bank of Zimbabwe (CBZ) for the financial support they have consistently given to the school.education

MSU buses, buildings smeared with Team Lacoste graffiti

GWERU – There was drama recently after the Midlands State University (MSU) security on Tuesday last week woke up to find some of the buildings as well as one of the institution’s buses spray-painted ‘Team Lacoste’.
Though MSU director of information Mirirai Mawere could not be reached for comment, it is understood the act left university authorities shocked as they had reportedly not expected the ruling Zanu PF party’s factional battles to be extended to the campus.
The inscriptions, reading ‘Team Lacoste. Vote Noah Tshuma for SRC Presidency,’ were reportedly done on the same night that President Mugabe reshuffled his cabinet and either demoted or dropped most of the alleged Team Lacoste members.
The Midlands province is considered a Team Lacoste stronghold as it is Vice President Emmerson Mnangagwa’s home area.
“Students have always been aligned to political parties, indirectly, but not to this extent. They are now aligning themselves directly with factions at the national political level. We are surprised,” said one official who preferred anonymity.
Another official also said security must be in a position to know who did that since the parking area is always guarded and is monitored by close circuit cameras.
“Security should have answers because they guard the parking areas 24/7 and they also have security cameras to monitor all that happens,” another official said.
Some students told TellZim News that the university had responded to the embarrassing graffiti by tightening security and suspending the affected bus from shuttling students around.
“They are now checking visitors too because they suspect it could be the work of outsiders,” another student said.
Student activist Makomborero Haruzivishe however said political consciousness at campus seemed to have risen dramatically following the President Mugabe’s Midlands leg of his youth interface rallies.
“These are manifestations of infighting looming in students’ politics. The interface rallies are also not helping because many students feel they are being used to shunt a biased factional agenda.
“It is however unfortunate and worrying those students are being made to divert from their co-business of learning and being dragged into the mess. Something should really be done to stop the rot because students should work only to advance their interests.local

GWERU – A nasty fight by two teenage girls over a bathing sponge ended tragically with the death of one of the two and police have arrested the other for suspected murder, TellZim News can reveal.
Midlands provincial police spokesperson Assistant Inspector Ethel Mukwende confirmed they had arrested a minor in connection with the case.
“We can confirm that we have since arrested a minor in connection with a murder case where she allegedly stabbed her co-tenant for using her sponge without permission,” Ass Insp Mukwende said.
The matter is being investigated by police under RRB number 28057689.
TellZim News learnt that October 2, at around 17:30 hrs, the accused went to the bathroom intending to bath and discovered that her bathing sponge was wet.
The accused began to ask questions as she had assumed that somebody had used her sponge and it is said fingers began to point towards the now deceased. After a long quarrel between the two, the accused allegedly struck the other girl with feasts.
After being restrained, the accused went to her room where she drew a knife and stabbed the now deceased once on the lower side of her chest.
The victim started bleeding profusely and she collapsed. She was taken to Gweru General Hospital where she was pronounced dead the following morning.local

Upheaval in CSFAZ as Hwarare is barred from contesting chairmanship

Addmore Hwarare
…organisation denies funding Mujuru

Beatific Gumbwanda

CHIREDZI – The Leadership of the Commercial Sugarcane Farmers Association of Zimbabwe (CSFAZ) last week held an emergency meeting and later addressed a press conference where they announced that former chairperson Addmore Hwarare was not eligible to contest again.
The leadership also took the chance to vehemently deny rumours that they were bankrolling the activities of Joice Mujuru’s opposition National People’s Party (NPP).
Mujuru was appointed CSFAZ patron by the previous executive led by Hwarare, then chairperson, and Darlington Chiwa then secretary general who is now Member of Parliament for Chiredzi West.
Current secretary general Roy Bhila and Tawanda Mafurutu, current chairperson, were deputising them.
Hwarare recently gave notifications that he wanted to contest for the post of chairperson which is currently being occupied by Tawanda Mafurutu.
The organisation will hold its elections on October 27 at South Eastern College.
CSFAZ was also alleged to be sponsoring Mujuru’s NPP as she is still referred to as patron.
During the press conference, Bhila denounced Hwarare and insisted that he was no longer eligible to contest for any post in the organisation, claiming he was no longer a paid up member.
“The Association operates with a constitution which is clear on who should contest and who should not. According to it, any member who is fully paid up in terms of his or her levies is eligible to contest for any post.
“We have a database which indicates that so and so has paid up his levies when they go to the mill and the levy is given back to us. Hwarare is not even in my database as he failed to contribute for the last three seasons and it means he is no longer eligible to contest for any post,” said Bhila.
Bhila also acknowledged that they were yet to notify former Mujuru that members had renounced her as the patron and they were now working to get first lady Grace Mugabe to take over.
“We are not funding Mai Mujuru’s political party and that must be clear. We had a meeting with farmers on 15 December where an issue to replace the patron and trustee at cane lands was raised,” said Bhila.
Hwarare, who gate-crushed the presser, said the association was now marred by factionalism and he boldly stated that he will not be barred from contesting.
“I personally wrote the constitution which you are citing. There are some circumstances that can hinder a farmer from paying up his levies like in my case, I was ill and you are the one who took care of my health bills,” said Hwarare.

“I was also arrested because of the debts and even my plot was taken by banks in order for them to recover their dues from me.
“Muno MuMasvingo I will admit one thing that there is factionalism like what President Mugabe once said. There is Lacoste and G40 and that we are also experiencing in this association. Kana uri kwakati haupinde so kana ukangoziva kuna Bhila hakusiko kwandiri ini. Let people decide my fate not you guys, apa Bhila haugone kundirambidza kuti ndipinde.
“I had four Brigadier Generals in my council and it was Rugeje who nominated Mujuru to be our patron and he was seconded by Mashingaidze and she was still a clean vice president by that time.
“Chiwa wrote a letter to Mujuru requesting her to be our patron on my behalf and she accepted the offer. I can support that these guys responded by writing to someone, whom I can’t mention here, in January 2015 after Mujuru sold out,” he added.
Bhila is said to be aligned with Team Lacoste faction and is also an aspiring candidate for Chiredzi North while Hwarare is aligned to G40 and others say he is being deployed to destabilise the Team Lacoste-dominated executive.politics

Dr Chimedza appointed Masvingo Resident minister

Dr Paul Chimedza

TellZim Reporter

Dr Paul Chimedza is the new Minister of State for Masvingo Provincial Affairs following his appointment to the position in President Robert Mugabe’s shock cabinet reshuffle on Monday.
The impromptu cabinet reshuffle also saw the promotion of Masvingo South legislator Walter Mzembi from the Ministry of Tourism to become Foreign Affairs minister, a more influential portfolio.
Dr Chimedza takes over from his arch-nemesis, the late Shuvai Mahofa who died in August, and he inherits a difficult province riddled with factionalism and perverted economic interests characterised by determined attempts to seize productive land from the likes of Tongaat Hullet.
The Gutu South legislator becomes the third person to occupy the post in four years, with Kudakwashe Bhasikiti, who was appointed in 2013, lasting just a little over one year before he was kicked out in 2014 for being in the ‘wrong basket’ of the Zanu PF’s factional battles then pitting ‘Weevils’ versus ‘Gamatox’.
Dr Chimedza was himself a victim of the purges that claimed the scalps Bhasikiti and others, and was fired from his position as deputy minister of Health but was later exonerated.politics

Arda reclaims Magudu Ranch

…over 8 000 farmers set to be evicted

Beatific Gumbwanda

CHIREDZI – The Agricultural and Rural Development Authority (Arda) is moving to take back Magudu Ranch, Uswaushava in Chiredzi North, from the thousands of new farmers who were settled there at the beginning of the Land Reform Programme in the early 2000s.
Arda reportedly abandoned the ranch some few years ago but is now eager to get back after reportedly finding an investment partner in the name of Integrated Construction Project (ICP).
The farmers, some of whom are into cotton farming, complained that they are being threatened with arbitrary eviction and this was affecting their preparation for the 2017/2018 cropping season.
They aired their grievances to members of the Parliamentary Portfolio Committee on Land, Agriculture, Mechanisation and Irrigation Development which was recently on a visit to the area to assess the impact of the Presidential Cotton Input Scheme.
Committee chairperson, Christopher Chitindi (Zanu PF MP for Muzarabani South) however advised them to put their case in writing, which they later did and they also wrote to the Ministry of Lands and Rural Resettlement.
He promised to look into the dispute, adding that parliament was set to pass the Zimbabwe Land Commission Bill into law which he said would help cases of farmers without offer letters.
“We are about to pass the Zimbabwe Land Commission Bill which is aimed at resolving these kinds of conflict. You should put all your concerns in writing addressed to our committee.
“It’s long overdue, you were supposed have offer letters by now and we are going to look into your issue very soon,” Chitindi said.
One of the farmers, Emmanuel Nyathi said people at the ranch were no longer sure about their future as they did not have offer letters.
“We were resettled here in 2000 but we were not given offer letters. People from Harare are now busy getting offer letters for the same land because they now realise the importance of agriculture. We don’t know where we would go if they make good of their threats,” said Nyathi.
Magudu Ranch used to be Arda property and was extensively used for cattle ranching until the onset of the Land Reform Programme when the parastatal allocated 6 000 hectares of the land to new farmers and remained with 5 500.
Later, Arda withdrew all its remaining operations at the ranch after the new farmers began to steal its fencing materials and encroaching into its remaining portion of the land.local

GZU Psychology department donates to Ngomahuru Psychiatric Hospital

0

The Great Zimbabwe University (GZU) first year Psychology students last Friday gave a donation to the Ngomahuru Psychiatric Hospital.
The department falls within the Julius Nyerere School of Social Sciences and has made a commitment to donate to the less privileged at Ngomahuru every semester.
This initiative started in 2015 and has been running for two years now. The department, through its first year, first semester (1:1) students, gives donations as part of moulding a culture of social responsibility.
In the past, the department donated sandals after noticing the serious shortage in footwear at the institution, and it also gave a radio set for entertainment.
This semester, the students donated kapenta and sugar beans and other food items including cooking oil and sugar.
Psychology department chairperson Herbert Zirima said the initiative was done entirely by the students and was pioneered by the first Master’s class of 2015.
“We will not tire to go out of our way to aid the hospital for as long as we are able,” Zirima said.
The medical superintendent at the hospital, Dr Parirenyatwa Maramba expressed gratitude to the university and students for the benevolent gesture.
Dr Maramba said the institution relies on donor and government funding and any form of donation it can get.
He said there was malnutrition at the hospital because there is often very little if any protein-giving foods like meat.
The hospital has a 300 bed capacity but currently has close to 200 patients and it is taking two GZU students for work related learning every year.
Mpokiseng Tlou, who is attached with the institution, said she was gaining vital knowledge through her work at the institution.local

…as Tenax beat Mutare City Rovers

MUTARE – The battle to bring Premier Soccer League (PSL) action to Sakubva Stadium took a new twist over the weekend when the current log leaders Mutare City Rovers suffered a one nil defeat at the hands of Tenax FC.
Dubbed the Mutare derby, the one nil win saw second placed Tenax FC closing the gap to a point with less than 10 games to play in the Eastern Region division 1.
The PSL race currently favours Mutare teams and has Mutare City on the lead with 51 points, with only a point separating Tenax FC from the log leaders. Rusape-based Buffaloes FC are on third position with 48 points.
Speaking to TellZim News, Tenax FC vice chairperson Stephen Masina said they were ready to fight until they get promoted into the top flight league next season.
“We had a good game over the weekend and as it stands right now, we are on track to win the promotion we will fight till the end,” said Masina.
Tenax FC has a trick fixture as they will play Buffalo FC away in Vengere Stadium this week.
“Our away games this season have given us more points and our next game is away in Rusape against Buffaloes and it is a must win game for us if we are to continue chasing our dream,” said Masina.
Tenax FC share Sakubva Stadium with Mutare City and they expressed dissatisfaction with the current state of the stadium which they said was not attractive to football fans who bring in the much needed revenue.
“Gate takings are supposed to be our incentive but with the current state of the stadium, we are failing to realise that incentive because the security wall is broken and has not received any attention,” added Masina.
Sakubva Stadium’s security wall was damaged during President Robert Mugabe’s Manicaland youth interface rally which was held in June.sport

MWENEZI – There were wild celebrations at Rutenga growth point last Saturday after Rutenga United won the J.S Omar Foundation Cup finals in a tightly contested match against Ward 5 football team.
Rutenga Utd fans and players burst into celebration after their team walloped their rivals 2-1 in penalty shootouts following a nil-nil all draw at full time.

In netball, Ward 4 walked away with US$200, a trophy, jerseys and a ball after thrashing the Ward 13 netball team which went away with US$100, trophy and jerseys.
In an interview with TellZim News J.S Omar Foundation district coordinator, Norman Mukondo said the thrust of the tournament was to identify talent and build social harmony through sport.
“The tournament, which started at ward up to district level, is going to be an annual event. The idea behind this is to promote unity through sports. We also want to identify talent among the youth and to keep them occupied so that they refrain from drug abuse,” said Mukondo.
Speaking after the game, Rutenga Utd coach Nicholas Shoko thanked tournament organisers and said more assistance was needed so that talent can be developed.
“We are delighted because our MP Joosbi Omar has organised this tournament for the benefit of the people he represents. It allows the youth to have a strong sense of constructive interaction. We also believe that next time, the MP will hire scouts from big teams for the purpose of talent identification.
“We also beg for assistance so that we can be promoted to division two. My team has got talented players but their progress is being hindered by financial constraints,” said Shoko.sport
