CHIVHU – A 36-year-old man, Nomore Munemo from Chibhora village, Chief Murambwa in Mhondoro-Ngezi last week stood before Chivhu Magistrate Fadzai Mtombeni facing two charges of rape in aggravating circumstances after he allegedly raped and sodomised a 37-year-old female teacher at St Michaels High School.
The State, led by Nicholas Mabvongodze, alleges that on May 08 this year at around 22:30 hrs, the complainant disembarked from a commuter omnibus at Murambwa Business Centre and made her way to St Michaels Mission on foot.
Along the way, she met the accused person at Musinambi Bridge, and the accused greeted her but she kept quiet.
The complainant walked for about 100 metres and saw that the accused person was following her so she started to run but the accused pursued and caught her.
He tripped her onto the ground but she managed to fight him off and she again tried to flee from him.
When the suspect caught her for the second time, he again tripped her to the ground, slapped and kicked her several times.
Feeling vulnerable, the complainant offered money to her assailant but he held her by the throat and threatened to kill her.
She then undressed herself and the accused raped and sodomised her before robbing her of US$12 and her pair of panties.
The complainant later approached a nearby homestead and phoned a workmate who later arrived with the school head and ferried her to St Michaels Hospital.
Two nurses accompanied the victim to Mamina Police Station where a report was made, leading to the arrest of the suspect.
The trial was due to continue in Chivhu Magistrates Court by the time of writing.local

…Zimbabwe Lawyers for Human Rights takes up case

Moses Ziyambi

CHIREDZI – A 32-year-old Chiredzi man has been charged for undermining the authority of the police after he was arrested for allegedly shouting abusive words at two uniformed police officers who were depositing government money at the local CBZ branch.
The incident happened on August 1 this year when Zephania Virimai allegedly verbally abused Lazarus Nyahonzo and Slyna Nyamaropa, who are both members of the Zimababwe Republic Police (ZRP) in the bank.
Virimai, who is represented by Blessing Nyamaropa of the Zimbabwe Lawyers for Human Rights (ZLHR), has already made his initial appearance before magistrate Tafadzwa Mhlanga and will return to court on October 11.
According to the State outline, the two officers entered the CBZ branch at around 11:20 hrs intending to lodge cash into the bank when Virimai, whose given address is ‘Near Magwaza Road, Tshovani, Chiredzi’, shouted ‘mbavha idzo ngadzibvepo’ literally translated to ‘thieves move away from there.’
And upon realising that the officers were not moved, the accused went on to say ‘zvimapurisa zvinobhenga mari yecorruption ‘rogue police officers who bank corruption money’.
The State argues that Virimai’s statements were prejudicial to the police force and that his actions created ‘a real risk or possibility of engendering feelings or hostility towards such police officer(s) or the police force or exposing such officers of the police force to contempt, ridicule or disesteem’.local

BVR nightmare

MASVINGO – The complexity of the Biometric Voter Registration (BVR) system is already being felt after residents from Masvingo Urban’s Ward 7 failed to register as voters amid reports that the whole ward was missing in the system when the registration process commenced on Monday this week.
Masvingo’s Ward 7 which covers Rujeko A, B and C has more than 10 000 potential voters and they might all be affected if the challenge is not immediately addressed.
A ZEC official at Masvingo District Administrator’s (DA) office confirmed the challenge but insisted that residents from Ward 7 must keep checking.
Incumbent councilor for Ward 7 Richard Musekiwa said he received several reports from residents though he was yet to enquire with ZEC officials.
“I heard about it; I’m not sure whether the omission of Ward 7 by ZEC is a genuine error or it was deliberate since they know that the area is MDC-T’s stronghold. I am yet to visit the ZEC officials but I communicated with my party leadership and they are looking into the matter,” said Musekiwa.
One resident from Rujeko who was turned away confirmed the matter to TellZim News.
“We were told that our ward is not in the system and we had to wait but it took too long so we left without registering. We fear we may not have a chance to register because ZEC continues to say the ward is not in the system,” said one resident.
Another resident said people from the ward were told to go back home and come back when the problem had been rectified but no date was given as to when the error will be sorted.
Election experts said the case of Ward 7 in Masvingo urban might just be a tip of an iceberg.
“BVR is the best way to go but the system also comes with its own problems. There might be many cases similar to that of Ward 7 and that means, if not rectified in time, many people might fail to register as voters. We urge ZEC to attend to these issues raised as a matter of urgency,” said one election expert.
Efforts to get comment from ZEC chairperson Rita Makarau was fruitless as her mobile phone was not reachable by the time of going to press.top news

Beatrice man rapes maid

CHIVHU – A 27-year-old man residing at Denenga Farm in Beatrice allegedly took advantage of the absence of his wife and raped his 16-year-old before ordering her not to reveal the ordeal to anyone, the Chivhu Magistrates Court heard last week.
Jairos Mageza appeared before magistrate Fadzai Mtombeni facing allegations of rape and was remanded in custody for further trial.
The State, led by Nicholas Mabvongodze, claimed that on July 14, 2017 at around 04:30 hrs, Mageza entered the dining room where his maid was sleeping alone, got in to her blankets and had sexual intercourse with her without her consent.
The accused then ordered the maid not to tell his wife and he left the victim crying while going to work.
The complainant, however, divulged everything when the accused and his wife returned from work in the evening of that day.
After the accused was questioned by his wife, he denied everything but their neighbour noticed changes on the victim’s character as she would look confused, unhappy and devastated.
When asked what was wrong, the victim refused to talk, only saying she wanted to go back to her mother at Mupandaguta Farm in Banket.
The neighbour then asked the accused’s wife for US$5 and gave it to the maid who then used it as bus fare to travel home where she reported the case to her mother.
A report was filed at Banket police, leading to the arrest of the accused person.
The trial continues tomorrow, Firday, in the Chivhu Magistrates Court.local

Mnangagwa silence irks G40

Emmerson Mnangagwa

MASVINGO – Vice President Emmerson Mnangagwa, who reportedly leads a faction known as Team Lacoste in the race to succeed the nonagenarian President Robert Mugabe, seems to have mastered the concept of silence very well, much to the chagrin of his G40 political enemies.
Sources said Mnangagwa’s enemies are angry that their flagrant provocation of the VP had failed to produce the desired reaction they had hoped to use against him.
The fight between Team Lacoste and rivals G40, which is allegedly led by Grace Mugabe, has opened up deep fissures within the ruling Zanu PF, cracks that have seen some party members being sacked while others continue to hang by the thread.
For the first time, the revolutionary party, Zanu PFwill have to pass the test of time by making sure that the revolution does not swallow all its children by the time the 2018 elections are held in a few months’ time.
War veterans’ top executive led by Christopher Mutsvangwa, who is an avowed Mnangwagwa supporter, was expelled from the party last year after criticising Mugabe.
Recently Energy Mutodi languished in prison for showing his unwavering support to Mnangagwa and was expelled from Zanu PF but Mnangagwa remained deafeningly silent.
G40 members have for long poked Mnangagwa in the face to try and expose him but being shrewd as he is, Mnangagwa has kept a level head, letting the ‘dogs’ continue barking.
At the recently held youth interface rally in Bindura, Mnangagwa was once again arm twisted but he did not scream.
The First Lady went on a rampage saying her own investigations into Zanu PF factionalism had found that only one faction going by the name Team Lacoste exists in the former liberation movement, but did not find anything by the name G40.
“Kubva 2014 kune vana wakawanda wakatanga kutukirira Baba neni Amai. Kuti yaiva strategy here yekuda kundisvibisa ndibve ndaora moyo ndibva ndati Baba chiregai muise vaMnangagwa nekuti vaishandisa zita ravaMnangagwa.
“Vana vazhinji vakadzingwa mumusangano. The youth are being expelled over indiscipline charges but how does the indiscipline come about. Vana vari kutuka vaMugabe vachiti wachembera chibva Mnangagwa apinde,” Grace said at the rally.
She went on to say that if people insult the President using the name of Mnangagwa and he just keeps quiet, it becomes worrying.
Grace went all out to defend her alleged G40 poster boys; national commissar Saviour Kasukuwere and Professor Jonathan Moyo, exonerating them of any wrong doing.
Masvingo and Midlands provinces, which are believed to be the most obstinate Mnangagwa pillars of support, were also tongue lashed by the garrulous first lady.
At another youth interface rally in Gwanda earlier on, Mnangwagwa was allegedly poisoned by his G40 adversaries and was flown to neighbouring South Africa for treatment but upon his return, the nation stood up and took notice hoping Mnangagwa would make a statement but he never did.
One of his allies in Masvingo said Team Lacoste is not a creation of Mnangagwa but of the grassroots that have chosen him to lead them post Mugabe.
“Team Lacoste was not created by Mnangagwa but the people in the grassroots. The people believe he is better positioned to take over after Mugabe. His silence should not be misconstrued as cowardice.
“Mnangagwa is a chief strategist and when the time comes for him to open his mouth you will all see. For now, let the dogs bark and see if the elephant will be scared,” said an ally who refused to be named for strategic reasons.top news

Tsvangirai laments voter apathy in urban centres

Morgan Tsvangirai
…Zec must be watched, churches must be roped in

Itai Muzondo

GOKWE – The Movement for Democratic Change (MDC-T) leader Morgan Tsvangirai last week lamented how voter apathy in urban areas had affected the opposition performance in successive elections in the past.
Tsvangirai made the remarks while addressing his party’s Midlands provincial leadership in Gokwe before he was airlifted to South Africa for medical attention after his health worsened.
The veteran opposition leaders said there was need for the party to engage newly emerging churches in rural communities so as to build formidable support.
“Everyone should register and be ready to cast their vote in 2018. Tell your kids that the future is in their hands. People in towns are now being affected by apathy. We need to break apathy in urban areas.
“Vanhu vacho vakungoshaya hanya vachiti nguri yatakavhota but really, lets fight for change if we really want it. Youths are the most affected age group as only five percent of youths voted in 2013. This is now a duty to you as the executive and youth league to make sure you encourage the youth to register and vote,” Tsvangirai said.
“In rural communities, build networks with these new churches. Isn’t it is the fastest growing business currently? We need them!” he said.
Tsvangirai said people should not have a negative attitude towards elections regardless of the outcomes of previous polls.
“Let’s open our eyes during the election. Even if Mugabe wants to cheat, this time we will cheat their cheating antics. They should be really trapped in a corner so that we have a fair election. If we want to win an election, let’s not have a negative attitude saying ah Mugabe anobira.
“If you have such a start, matodyiwa musati matanga. We must always be positive! Zec (Zimbabwe Electoral Commision) should also be tightly monitored and should never be left alone. We must make sure it complies with the law,” he said.politics

Sixty-six Zaka households fight for one dirty water point

Brighton Chiseva

ZAKA – More than 66 households in wards 28, 29 and 30 under Chief Bota have no access to clean water and are relying on mufuku – a small well dug on a dry riverbed – on the narrow Musungusungu stream, TellZim News can reveal.
Last week, representatives from District Development Fund (DDF), Agritex and Zaka West legislator Vincent Mawere paid a visit to the area after reports of disputes over access to the well.
It was established that these households depend on water from the well, which they have since named Chikanga, for drinking, cooking, laundry and watering their gardens.
“I am old now and I have grandchildren and this has been our only source of water. Some areas have had the privilege of boreholes but we have not been that fortunate,” said Egnes Chavizha.
Another old villager, Esnath Chipanera said the water point was often congested and was not safe for young children who risk drowning since the well is not protected.
“Vamwe vakadzi vaviri vatori pano vakawira mumufuku uyu, kana mvura yava shoma panotyisa apa, zvekuti munhu akange ari ega anofiramo,” Chipanera.
Ward 30 councillor fortune Maputsa said the area has never had a borehole or any better source of water.
“To some people, the closest borehole is six kilometres away while for others it’s five and those who are closer have to walk about three kilometres. However, many find it easier to fetch water from Chikanga than to walk long distances to fetch cleaner water,” said Maputsa.
On his part Mawere promised to work hard and mobilise resources so that better sources of drinking water can be established.
“I will engage the local authorities and DDF and the Ministry of Environment Water and Climate so that we find a solution to this problem. As for now, we encourage people to boil their drinking water,” said Mawere.local

GCET works to empower girl child

Children who attended the GCET seminar were given certificates

MASVINGO – Girl Child Empowerment Trust (GCET), a non-governmental organisation concerned with the rights of the girl child, is empowering girls by giving them a voice on aspects that affect their lives.
GCET founder Morenlet Mawire said the trust’s vision was to grow and become the leading and reputable action team which cultivates an understanding and active participation of young girls in areas to do with their lives.
“Girl Child Empowerment Trust aims to build consciousness among girls through increased understanding and participation in issues affecting them. We do this through coordination of such areas as information dissemination, networking, advocacy and resource mobilisation,” said Mawire
The trust recently held a workshop in Chiredzi district at which various concerns were raised chief among them the scourge of child marriages which many girls said was being fueled by poverty and lack of education.
Mawire said GCET wanted to empower the girl child and advocate for her personal and reproductive health rights. She said the organisation was working to educate the girl child on her personal health issues concerning puberty, menstruation and personal hygiene.
She also said the GCET aims to increase levels of awareness on such social ills as abuse of children which is one of the most worrying problems especially in poor households.local

Vendors march against vendors in Gweru

Vendors march against other vendors in Gweru last week

Itai Muzondo in Gweru

GWERU – Informal traders operating at designated stalls behind Swift Complex in the light industrial sites last week demonstrated against those operating illegally, forcing many off the streets.
One of the demonstrators, Phillip Musi said he was angry that he had to compete with unregistered vendors who pay nothing to council.
“We have suffered enough. We were moved to designated stalls recently but others are sticking around in town and this is a disadvantage to us. That’s the reason why we rose to take them out of the streets ourselves.
“It’s just so painful that you pay to sell from a designated selling point and someone operating illegally takes all the customers,” Musi said.
An unidentified female vendor who was among the demonstrators said she too was angry with those who were operating at undesignated sites.
“Most of them have been given regular stalls but they are leaving them and getting back to the pavements. This is unfair because we are paying to sell our wares and they are not. They must come to the Swift,” she said.
City of Gweru Mayor Charles Chikozho, who is on record saying council had given up on vendors, pointed out that the demonstrators’ grievances were justified.
“I can’t blame them for that action because they too are worried for their businesses. No one would want to get into business and then be made to compete with somebody operating illegally. The set-up is not fair to them at all.
“I am not justifying clashes between the groups but I understand that these people expect authorities to protect them. As council, we are incapacitated, we can’t remove vendors and the police also say they cannot do it and that is why we have engaged the Ministry of Local Government,” Chikozho said.local

Senga Primary School pupils demonstrate against abuse

…school closes on opening day as children boycott classes

Itai Muzondo in Gweru

GWERU – It was not the best opening week for Senga Primary School after pupils chose not to attend class last Thursday in protest against a lady teacher whom they accused of abusing them.
Speaking to TellZim News, a staff member at the school confirmed the development and said parents were now outraged that things could go that bad without authorities noticing and taking action.
“It was drama. The children allege that the female teacher hits them with a broom stick and at one incident, a child bled heavily from the said abuse. The teacher is in an uncomfortable situation because some parents came looking for her,” the source said.
Midlands Provincial Education Officer (PED) Agnes Gudo could neither confirm nor deny the report, insisting that TellZim News must send their questions through mail.
“What we do in Gweru is you put your questions in writing, send us and we will give reply instantly,” Gudo said but the email was not instantly replied as promised.
The teacher at the centre of the controversy was identified only as Makandiwa but she did not answer phone calls, and was overhead instructing a child who answered her phone to ‘…tell them she is not around.’
In March this year, High Court Judge David Mangota outlawed corporal punishment, saying it violated children’s rights.local
