MWENEZI – Catholics from diverse corners of the province and beyond, last Saturday converged at Sacred Heart High School in Mwenezi, celebrating Father Pauls Wezana’s 10th anniversary at the helm.
The colourful ceremony was graced by the dean of Southern Deanery, Father Samson Mutsvanga as guest and other dignitaries like Frs Patrick Marimazhira and Donald Zvemisha as well as priests and church representatives from elsewhere.
Speakers hailed the 42-year-old Fr Wezana as a dedicated and hardworking cleric whose work continues to be a shining example.
Fr Mutsvanga praised Fr Wezana for his outstanding work which he said was a result of a divine calling.
“Father Wezana’s good works started way beyond 2007. He has and is still serving God with utmost diligence. His calling was not a human mission. It was God’s calling that is evidently bearing fruits,” said Fr Mutsvanga.
On his part, Fr Wezana thanked the Catholic leadership and the faithful for their support and advised school children to be focussed and united for the good of their communities and country.
Born and bred in Sheshe village under Chief Mupata in Gutu, Fr Wezana started his one and half year vocation course at Mazowe Pre-Major Seminary in 1999.
He was ordained in 2007 and he started to administer in Chiredzi at St Peter’s Chikombedzi from where he transferred to St Nicolas’, Holy Trinity Triangle, St Mary’s Nyika, St Monica’s Chikuku in 2009, 2013, 2014 and 2015 respectively.
From St Monica’s Chikuku, he moved to All Saints Rutenga in January 2016 where he is currently ministering.religion

Nine candidates emerge in Zaka Central

At the heart of Zaka district is the most sought after constituency, Zaka Central. The incumbent legislator Paradzai Chakona is indeed tying all his best to make sure he gets another term come 2018.
But that would not be a stroll in the park as nine other candidates are said to be strategically positioning and readying themselves ahead of the much anticipated harmonised elections.
From Zanu PF, James Makiya, Nyaradzo Tachiona, Johanes Chindanya and Kunaka Alfonce and a Svuure are said to be ready to challenge Chakona.
As if to say he is the best candidate, Chakona has since bought a new Benz GL 4Matic and personalised the number plates – ZAKA 1 – which probably means he is the Zaka’s number one candidate. Maybe he is – time will tell.
Besides that infamous incident in China when he led other parliamentarians astray back then, an error of judgement that made him a butt of jokes, Chakona has endeared himself with the electorate for fulfilling some of the promises he made in the run up to the July 31, 2013 elections.
A hostile relationship with Chief Nhema (Rangarirai Bwawanda) also did not deter him as he continued to work with the electorate representing them fairly well in Parliament. At least he contributes during debates in Parliament unlike some of his counterparts from Zaka district.
As for Tachiona, she never lost hope after losing dismally to Chakona in the 2013 Zanu PF primaries, and she is now back with a bang! But being a mother comes with a lot of responsibilities and usually it is not easy to balance the roles of motherhood with the demands of politics.
But Tachiona seems to be managing well as she has risen through the party ranks to become a provincial executive member and she controls some of the structures in Zaka Central.
Being a teacher at a local school might also give her a bit of leverage. Being a woman contesting a rural constituency, however, is not an easy task and it becomes all the more difficult if one does not have enough resources to fund a strong campaign.
Makiya, the other candidate, is said to be enjoying a cordial relationship Chief Nhema who hardly sees eye to eye with Chakona. This may get him (Makiya) all the support to oust the incumbent legislator.
He can count on the fact that the electorate might not want to be seen as snubbing their chief’s preferred candidate. He stands to gain if he capitalises on that relationship and fully exploits it to his advantage.
The Majority of Zaka Central’s wards are in Chief Ndanga area and since Makiya sponsors the Chief Ndanga trophy, this might be his biggest advantage ahead of other candidates.
Being a lawyer might also help Makiya to get the better of Chakona probably in terms of strategising though Chakona himself cannot be underrated as he is an eloquent intellectual himself.
Kunaka is said to be close to Chief Nhema too and both Kunaka and Makiya hail from Ward 14 but Kunaka seems to have not covered as much ground so far, and the same goes for Chindanya and Svuure.
The ultimate winner will face candidates from MDC-T, PDP and RDZ at the general elections.
From MDC-T, James Mushonga, Francis Binza, Alois Zimudzi and Paul Vurayai are said to be interested. Mushonga outmatched Vurayai in 2013 before he was sent packing by Chakona on the July 31, 2013 harmonised elections.
Both Vurayi and Mushonga are said to be interested in trying their luck once again. They will battle it out with Zimudzi, Binza.  Zimudzi is a lecturer at the University of Zimbabwe (UZ) in the faculty of medicine. It is said he was once Tsvangirai’s personal assistant and is based in Harare.
Vurayai is a lawyer by profession and was in COPAC team during the constitution making process in 2012 and is a businessman while Binza hails from ward 14 and is a businessman based in Harare.
Though he comes from Zaka, he is not so popular and if he wants to test the waters he has a lot of work to do since 2018 is around the corner.  Zimudzi is credited for assisting the MDC-T victims that were petrol bombed at Jerera growth point in 2008.
Mushonga is the talk of Jerera and Zaka in the MDC camp. He is said to be humble and mixes and mingles with the electorate more frequently than any other person in MDC-T. He even drinks traditional beer with them but it seems he is fast forgetting to campaign.
Ward 19 councillor Peter Imbayarwo’s name is also among the other interested candidates though he has dismissed it as ‘a mere rumour’. Imbabyarwo is the only opposition councillor in the Zanu PF dominated Zaka Rural District Council (RDC).
Suppose he succumbs to pressure from the electorate and accept to contest for the constituency, Imbayarwo might stand a better chance.
Former Zaka Central MP Harrison Mudzuri is said to be eyeing a comeback under PDP though some suggest that he now wants to contest for the position of councillor.
Joseph Chipfumo is also said to be eyeing the same constituency under the RDZ ticket. He is hardly known though.
Chipfumo is said to be a gold miner and is a holder of a mining certificate from the Zimbabwe School of Mines.
Whatever happens and whoever wins primaries of any of the political parties will not have an easy win in the general election as the field promises to be more competitive than ever before. For contributions e-mail

Sandon Academy pupils in China

TellZim Reporter

GUTU – While other ordinary schools often organise trips to places like Victoria Fall, Kariba, Chinhoyi Caves and other local destinations, the extraordinary Sandon Academy recently took its pupils to China on an educational trip.
Sandon Academy Chief Executive Officer (CEO) Lovemore Matuke said the trip was meant to inspire pupils to embrace change in a fast evolving world.
“There is unprecedented advancement in technology so it was important that children get first-hand experience of where the world is going technologically. We want to nurture global pupils who have a better appreciation of the world around us,” said Matuke.
He said the exposure will challenge pupils into studying hard so that they can be part of the elite class that is changing the world.
“Every person needs to be pushed or motivated by something. As you may know, China is a technological power house which can inspire our pupils.
“That way, pupils come to understand the seriousness of the world so that they can be motivated to study hard for them to influence similar development,” said Matuke.education

MASVINGO – The Zimbabwe National Army (ZNA) last week commissioned two classroom blocks; one in Bikita and the other in Zaka West as part of the armed forces’ efforts to widen their social responsibility work in ordinary communities.
In Bikita, the classroom block was built at Chikukutu Primary School and was officially commissioned by ZNA commander Philip Valerio Sibanda.
Chief of Staff Administration, Major General Douglas Nyikayaramba commissioned a computer laboratory in at Mutonhori High School in Zaka.
Mjr Gen Nyikayaramba said building infrastructure was one of ZNA’s ways of giving back to the community in appreciation of the role that parents played during the liberation struggle.
“During the liberation struggle, we were ordered not to destroy schools for we wanted to use them after the war. The army is at your disposal; just provide all the necessary materials and invite us and we will not take long,” said Nyikayaramba
Local Member of Parliament Vincent Mawere praised the ZNA for working hard for the development of education in his constituency.
He also hailed former Mutonhori school head Severino Bvunyenge for initiating the project and urged current head Lucas Masokose to continue with the spirit of development.
ZNA will commission two more completed projects in Chivi and Mwenezi districts this month.local

Masvingo General Hospital could soon be singing the ‘Amazing Grace’ after a medical team from Licking Memorial Hospital in the American state of Ohio showed keen interest in establishing a partnership which would result in the provision world class health care services.
The medical team came into the country on a scouting mission to see which hospitals they could partner for the purposes of development and training.
They came under the banner of Rotary International and their trip was also facilitated by the philanthropic organisation, the Living Water of Ohio.
The Masvingo Rotary Club also played an active role in securing the visit of the medical team.
Head of delegation and former president of the Newark Heath Rotary Club in Ohio, Jeff Smith said the people of Ohio loved the people of Zimbabwe and they will work hard to create relations with

medical institutions in the country.
“For the love of humanity, we have travelled this far to come and see how best we can work together with Masvingo Provincial Hospital.
“We want to create a mutual relationship which benefits both sides and if possible, we could create an exchange programme for our staff to gain more experience and knowledge. This is the beginning of a long relationship,” said Smith.
The tour revealed the urgent work that needs to be done to fix the deplorable conditions at the hospital’s mortuary.
Masvingo General Hospital Public Relations Officer (PRO) Ruth Zulu said there were huge problems with the mortuary of the province’s only referral medical facility.
“The mortuary is very small and in a deplorable state. There is need to build a bigger morgue which can accommodate more bodies and keep them well preserved,” said Zulu.
The medical team from Ohio also donated some theatre materials before spending the whole day treating patients free of charge.local

First female president for Masvingo Rotary Club in 60 years

Gwa)tidzo (left) speaks soon after being handed the chains of leadership by Bhiza (centre)
Moses Ziyambi

Rotary Club Masvingo last week broke with tradition and inducted their first ever female president; Great Zimbabwe University (GZU) registrar Sinikiwe Gwatidzo, who will lead the private voluntary charity club for the 2016-2017 Rotary year.
Masvingo Rotary Club was formed back in 1959 and had been led by males ever since partly because until 1989, the constitution and bylaws of Rotary International stated that Rotary Club membership was for males only.
Gwatidzo took over from Brian Bhiza who led the organisation for the 2016-2017 term during which many humanitarian and social responsibility projects were done.
Another woman, Sikanzile Dingani retained her post as club treasurer while Michael Zulu will also serve his second term as secretary.
Speaking at the induction dinner held at Flamboyant Hotel last Satur-

day, Gwatidzo said she was humbled that members had entrusted her with the leadership of the local unit of the internationally-revered group.
“It is an honour to be the first female president of the Rotary Club of Masvingo and I hope to witness more of this. Women are the producers by nature; if you give a woman seed, she produces a nation, give her the ingredients, she will give you a meal and give her a few bricks, she will give you a home.
“I want to believe during the tenure of office of the first female president, if we bring together the bricks, we would be able to build a better home for the community of Masvingo,” said Gwatidzo.
She however acknowledged that her new responsibilities were by no means a stroll in the park as the job comes with massive expectations to live up to.
“It is a huge responsibility to be handed the chains of leadership and be told that you are the next president. Having to take that responsibility is not easy especially when you are taking over from somebody who was so active and dedicated. You want to ask yourself ‘will I be able to achieve as much, will I be able to continue motivating the club to continue doing the work that was being done and will I be available all the time?’ ” said Gwatidzo.
In his own remarks, Bhiza highlighted the accomplishments of the previous term and encouraged members to support the new president.
“We need to push for consistency so that we have more activities as a club. The more we meet consistently as a club and as committees, we will achieve much more,” said Bhiza.
Rotary Club has six focus areas which are peace and conflict prevention or resolution, diseases prevention and treatment, water and sanitation, maternal and child health, basic education and literacy, economic and community development.local, topnews

Satanism scare at Chivi school

…teacher transferred, pastor forced away

Itai Muzondo

CHIVI – There was commotion last week at Mudadisi High School after parents rose against a school teacher who was being accused of leading a satanic cult, forcing his immediate transfer from the school.
Sources said a local AFM pastor, Happiness Maidza called for a late night intercession to pray for a woman (name supplied) who was not feeling well.
It was during the prayer session that the ailing woman reportedly confessed that she was suffering due to acts of Satanism in which she was indulging together with a named teacher at the school.
“During an interlude, she confessed that she was dabbling in Satanism and claimed that she was initiated by the teacher. She also confessed that the two of them were responsible for several miscarriages including one that another teacher’s wife had suffered.
TellZim News was also told that the school head was recently involved in a ‘mysterious’ accident while driving the teacher and his wife to their rural home in Sese.
District Administrator (DA) Wafios Hlavati, however, said investigations by the police, District Schools Inspector (DSI) and Headman Madyangove had shown nothing sinister against the teacher.
“The issue just got out of hand and we had to ask the teacher if he was comfortable with having a transfer and he agreed because there was a protest against him.
“The issue didn’t sound realistic at all and we suspect that Pastor Maidza could have set up the teacher so we asked the AFM church to take him out of Chivi,” Hlavati said.local

Outrage over ‘extravagant’ Gweru Town Clerk

Prince Danda

GWERU – Residents have raised strong objections against the City of Gweru’s proposal to purchase a Ford ranger vehicle for town clerk, Elizabeth Gwatipedza.
The proposal comes a few months after another council resolution to spend a whopping US$38 000 on curtains for the executive’s new residence.
Residents, however, point to the council’s depleted revenue coffers and the city’s deplorable service delivery record as reasons for the need to avoid profligate spending.
Gweru Residents Forum director Charles Mazorodze described the move as misplaced due to the acute service delivery backlogs the city was grappling with.
“There is no justification whatsoever for spending money on non-service delivery issues while ignoring the deteriorating service delivery framework in this city,” Mazorodze said.
The council recently caused a storm after deciding to buy new expensive curtains and to make extensive renovations on the 20-roomed mayoral house in Kopje, Gweru, before Gwatipedza could move in.
Gweru Residents Association (GRA) chairperson Cornilious Seliphiwe added his voice, saying residents will not allow a cash-strapped local authority to spend outrageous amounts of money while failing to cater for the needs and rights of rate-payers.
City of Gweru mayor Charles Chikozho could neither deny nor confirm that there were plans to buy the expensive car for the town clerk but was quick to accuse the residents’ association of trying to incite a rate boycott.local

I can’t lose both work and lover – sacked Catholic Priest

ZAKA – The Musiso trainee priest who allegedly impregnated a form three pupil at Musiso High School is said to have told the girl’s parents that they must give him ‘his wife’ as he does not want to lose both his work and the girl.
Sources said the priest had despaired about his job as the Catholic church was most likely to fire him from his position and was now hoping to at least be allowed to take in the girl as his wife ‘so that he does not suffer double loss.’
The trainee priest is reported to have been removed from the institution but TellZim News could not establish his whereabouts by the time of going to print.
The sources also said the girl was withdrawn from school and was now staying with her grandparents in Mushungwa area from where she will resume her studies next term at Chimbwembwe Secondary School.
“The girl is in Mushungwa area and the priest asked the girl’s mother if he could marry the girl so that he doesn’t lose both his work and the girl,” the source said.
It is also said when he allegedly impregnated the girl, the trainee priest was sharing accommodation with a student teacher at Musiso Catholic Primary School (CPS) who was also in a relationship with a form four pupil at the high school.
The affair was eventually bust and the matter was reported to Bondolfi Teachers College, where the student teacher is training, for investigations.

These incidents come a few months after another Catholic father based in Checheche married a form six pupil at Musiso and was dismissed from work.topnews, local

CHIREDZI – The Minister of Rural Development and Preservation of Culture and Heritage, Abednico Ncube has praised the Great Limpopo Cultural Trade Fair initiative but blamed tattered roads in the district for stunting development.
In a speech read on his behalf by George Magosvongwe, who is the permanent secretary in the ministry, at Mhlanguleni at the close of the fair recently, Ncube said good road networks were the basis for infrastructure development.
“We should engage in practical programmes of farming, irrigation, mining and infrastructural development facilitated by good road networks which are key to development.
“When I was coming here it felt like I was dancing mbakumba and muchongovoyo due to bad roads. If we are talking about culture, we are talking about constructing good road networks, connecting water and electricity in order to upgrade our living conditions,” he said.
Ncube thanked the Great Limpopo Cultural Trade Fair organisers and local leaders for facilitating the cross-country cultural festival.
“We thank the growth of the trade fair and the government has joined to make it a national cultural fair and ultimately an international cultural fair being joined by our brothers in South Africa and Mozambique. This has given us a platform to attend to the welfare of other communities countrywide,” he said.
In Mwenezi, meanwhile, artists converged at Rutenga growth point and agreed to come up with a cultural festival as is happening in other districts.
Culture officer from the ministry, Kenneth Madziva urged artists in the district to speak with one voice so that they can match other districts.
“You need to come up with a cultural festival like what is happening in districts like Chiredzi. Such a platform would present an opportunity to showcase Mwenezi talent so you need to have your own area of specialisation as an artist,” said Madziva.
The meeting was attended by groups like the Musaverema traditional dance group, Matande Black Spirits, representatives from Mwenezi Rural District Council and the Ministry of Education as well as representatives from Regai Dzive Shiri.local
