Tongaat Hullet rescues communities

…injects US $2 million to improve  livelihood in Chilonga

Beatific Gumbwanda in Chiredzi

CHIREDZI – Giant sugar company, Tongaat Hullet, which employs over 18 000 workers is undoubtedly leading by example as it has invested in improving the living standards of the general public in Zimbabwe.
Having injected US$2 million in the Chilonga community about two years ago to assist the community to have food security through cattle rearing, the people of Chilonga are happy that the project has started to bear fruits.
The sugar company also constructed cattle feedlots so that the community could take advantage of that to do pen fattening. The villagers have, therefore, managed to benefit immensely from the project since they were able to commercialise their cattle and make profits out of their livestock.
Currently, the sugar company is organising cattle auctions where reputable cattle buyers are brought at one point thereby giving villagers bargaining power as buyers compete in the process.
Tongaat Hullet Corporate Affairs and Communications manager Adelaide Chikunguru said the company was eager to improve the living standards of the general public in Zimbabwe.
“We are helping the community to get full value for their livestock. We realised that Chilonga, for example, lies in farming region five and the people rely mostly on their cattle to sustain their livelihoods. We therefore came up with the idea of helping the community to get full value for their cattle.
“As an organisation, we have bought over 6000 cattle from Chilonga since 2015 which could have died had it not been for that intervention. We constructed this feedlot so that we assist villagers to fatten their cattle. In the end villagers emerge as winners in this project,” said Chikunguru.
Chikunguru said Tongaat Hullet was also going to have similar programmes in other districts in Masvingo province.
“We have constructed feedlots in other districts and we shall have auctions at Madzivire in Chivi as well as Chivamba in Zaka. The communities have received our gesture with joy.
“We have tailored our programmes in a way that empowers these communities,” added Chikunguru.
Chilonga feedlot chairperson Richard Magezani thanked Tongaat Hullet for coming up with the initiative which has so far benefitted his community.
“This is a very good initiative which has boosted our financial base. We highly appreciate the way Tongaat Hullet has invested here. Since the feedlot was built, our lives were transformed,” said Magezani.
Secretary for the Chilonga feedlot, Shelton Malavusa said the idea of bringing buyers at one centre also helped in reducing cattle theft.
“This set up is very transparent and it has gone a long way in curbing cattle theft. We all see our fellow villagers selling their cattle and it becomes easy for us to raise the red flag when we see suspicious movements,” said Malavusa.
People who sold their cattle last week praised Tongaat Hullet saying it was easier to sell cattle under an organised auction since the police and veterinary department will be at one point.
“This is a hustle free programme… unlike in the past, you can now just drive your beast to this point and all the processes are done at one centre,” said Wilson Velemu.
Another seller, Kaurai Tagarira said he was pleased because the programme helped him to get full value of his cattle.
Tagarira said had it not been Tongaat Hullet’s initiative, he was not going to be able to send his children to university.
“I am happy that I have managed to get the actual value for my cattle. I have since paid fees for my children who are at Great Zimbabwe University,” said Tagarira.business

VP Mnangagwa urges companies to emulate Mangwa Quip

Vice President Emmerson Mnangagwa

Vice President Emmerson Mnangagwa urged businesses and private companies in Zimbabwe to emulate Mangwa Quip and be able to develop their areas as well creating employment for locals.
Speaking after a tour of Nandi Estate which was revamped by Mangwa Quip in Chiredzi recently, Mnangagwa said the Lowveld was likely going to be the bread basket of Zimbabwe, thanks to the efforts by Chiredzi East legislator Denford Masiya who is the Director of Mangwa Quip.
Mnangagwa showered praises on Masiya, saying if more farmers and business people with his spirit could be found, Chiredzi Zimbabwe will never import food from other countries.
“Let us have more people like Masiya; look how this Estate which has been lying fallow for close to five years has developed in less than one year,” said Mnangagwa at a colourful event held at Nandi Estate last year.
Mnangagwa said government was determined to develop Chiredzi and Mwenezi through full utilisation of water bodies, saying government will provide the necessary equipment.
“The government is committed to the development of these two districts. The farming equipment which will be provided will be paid for over a specific period,” said Mnangagwa.
Masiya, however, said Mangwa Quip was determined to improve the livelihood of the people of Zimbabwe through transforming Chiredzi into a green belt of the country.
With the necessary support from both government and relevant authorities, Masiya said his organisation had the capacity to provide food security for the entire country.
“Chiredzi can be a green belt of Masvingo Province or even Zimbabwe because the area is blessed with many flat lands, good weather and many wetlands. There are many unused water bodies which when utilised will turn Chiredzi into the bread basket of Zimbabwe. I want to assure you that as Mangwa Quip, we have the capacity to boost the country’s food security,” said Masiya.business

Passout parade for graduate Gonarezhou game rangers

…takes measures against poaching

Beatific Gumbwanda

CHIREDZI – The Frankfurt Zoological Society, through the Gonarezhou Conservation Trust, is working to upgrade the Gonarezhou National Park to meet international standards while devising new strategies to fight the scourge of poaching.
This was heard last week during a pass out parade for new game rangers where it was revealed that ‘The Big Five’ group of wild animals will also be introduced into the park to boost the tourism potential of the vast park, with standards expected to match those of Kruger National Park in neighbouring South Africa.
After failing to meet the operational requirements of the park and losing the war against poaching, government partnered the zoological society which has already bought equipment and vehicles being used in the anti-poaching campaign.
Director of the Gonarezhou Conservation Trust, Hugo van der Weisthuizen said new Toyota land cruiser patrol vehicles had been bought and some lodges had been upgraded.
“We use more than $150 000 on wages and anti-poaching equipment every month and we recently bought new equipment that will be used by rangers on their daily patrols. We are also upgrading our lodges, the likes of Svimuwini Lodge,” said van der Weisthuizen.
Gonarezhou conservation trustee and board member, Jerry Gotora said poaching had been reduced and they will soon re-introduce ‘The Big Five’ in the conservation.
“Poaching has been reduced to a new minimum and we now have 156 game rangers from the 56 that we previously had. The expectations are that we will reduce poaching to nil.
“We are aiming to upgrade this conservation to a level where we will be having more animals in the park because tourists come to see animals not trees…we are also going to introduce rhinos back into the park in the near future probably next year.
“That will enhance tourism as we will be having The Big Five because currently we only have the big three,” said Gotora.local

MASVINGO – Tawanda Chikarango (23) from Muzorori village in Gutu will serve an effective 16 year jail term after magistrate Dambudzo Malunga found him guilty of raping a 12-year-old girl.
Two years of his original 18 year jail time were suspended on condition that does not commit a similar offence in the next five years.
On passing judgment, the magistrate said the accused deserved a lengthy sentence to send a message to potential rapists.
“A long sentence is appropriate to send a message to the people out there that the courts will continue to protect innocent girls,” said Malunga
It was the State’s case that in May 2016, Chikarango approached the complainant and her friend aged 12 (names supplied) who were heading cattle in the bush.
He proposed love to them but they turned him down. He went away for some time and came back dressed in different clothes and armed with a knife.local

We have failed – Mahofa

Shuvai Mahofa

Upenyu Chaota

Minister of State for Provincial Affairs for Masvingo Shuvai Mahofa has openly acknowledged that the President Robert Mugabe-led government has totally failed and quickly urged the youth to take over and form a new government.
Addressing Zanu PF members during a preparatory meeting for Mugabe Youth Interface Rally to be held at Mucheke Stadium today (Friday), Mahofa said the current government, which comprises aged people, is now slow and increasingly getting tired.
Mahofa urged the youth to rise to the occasion and participate in national politics since they are the ones who can provide a brighter future for their generation something which she said the current crop of leaders had failed to do.
“We have failed; youth should take over and form a new government. They (youth) can create a far much better government where people will prosper not the current one where people are struggling.
“The youth should be part of all the development initiatives like the dualisation of the Chirundu-Beitbridge highway,” said Mahofa.
As if to admit that the old crop of the Zanu PF administration has failed, Mahofa said the youth are the future and they have to safeguard that future by getting involved directly in the governance of the country.
“There are youth in some remote corners of the province who have no idea what President Mugabe looks like in real life. They only know him through pictures in newspapers but they now have a chance to meet with him and discuss on their future.
“Pane mamwe mayouth edu asingazivi kuti Mai Mahofa wakaita sei but they are the ones who should create a better future for themselves. We need youth who are proactive and safeguard the party because the future of the party heavily depends on them,” said Mahofa.topnews

Youth captured playing netball

Lawrence Mandava

MASVINGO – MyAge Zimbabwe last week organised a Youth Sports Tournament at Nemanwa business centre as part of the organisation’s Youth Engage Project which aims to contribute to ‘The 2030 Agenda for Sustainable Development for Children in Africa: Accelerating Protection, Empowerment and Equal Opportunity’ goal.
The event was aimed at advocacy work towards meaningful involvement and inclusion of young people in community decision-making spaces through village development committees as well as ward development committees.
It was also a way of creating a platform for dialogue, networking and cross learning between youths and policy makers and community leaders.
Soccer and netball games were played between male and female teams as a way of breaking some of the stereotypes that society has long preserved with regards to gender vis-à-vis capability.
Winning teams walked away with various prizes including sports kits for use in the future.
Targeted wards included ward 6, 7, 9, 12, 19, 23, 26 and 33, and targeted groups of people included local leaders like councillors, traditional leaders, the local Member of Parliament, representatives from the Ministry of Youth Indigenisation and Economic Empowerment, as well as young men and women from the wards.
MyAge programmes manager Joseph Njowa said the programme was vital as it connected the youths with the government at local level.
“This networking and connectedness is an important linkage which connects young people with the government,” said Njowa.sport

LUSAKA – Fatigue-stricken Shabani Primary School teams put up spirited performance at an invitational hockey tournament here despite going through a torrid time at the border when Zambian authorities initially refused recognise the group travel document issued to the team by the Registrar General (RG)’s office.
The RG’s office failed to timely process the passports of some 27 members of the team and had to process a group travel document which caused the group to be delayed at the border for 21 hours as Zambian immigration officials claimed that the document was not familiar.
It took the intervention of Zvishavane-Ngezi Member of Parliament John Holder and the Minister of Sports and Recreation Makhosini Hlongwani before the group could be allowed into Zambia.
The teams had to play all their games on Saturday when all their opponents had played some of their games on Friday.
However, they gave a good account of themselves and the boys started the day against Musikili Primary School and drew two all.
They then played and lost two nil to Italian School of Lusaka coached by fellow Zimbabwean sports teacher Ishmael Mbatata.
The team then drew one all with Lusaka International Community School but lost their last match due to increased fatigue with the girls winning one match and losing three.
After the tournament, Shabani Primary School head Joy Mdumo encouraged the pupils to continue working hard and to take the positives they learnt in Zambia.

Damaged Sakubva Stadium costs Mutare

People walk through a damaged part of Sakubva Stadium

Lloyd Shunje in Mutare

MUTARE – President Robert Mugabe’s recent visit to Mutare has left the city council with a huge bill to pay for repairs on Sakubva Stadium which suffered substantial damage as people stampeded to gain entry for the free entertainment galore provided.
The stadium’s security was broken on one side as people jostled to see Soul Jah Love performing and it has since enabled people to walk freely into the stadium without using the regular entry points.
Council-sponsored football team, Mutare City Rovers recently lost substantial revenue after some fans entered the stadium without paying during the team’s clash with United Lions.
Speaking to Tellzim News, Mutare City Rovers spokesperson Clayton Masekesa said they lost revenue after many people easily made their way into the stadium earlier than expected.
“We had a challenge in gate takings as many people had already made their way to the game earlier than expected so we have engaged the council’s community services department to assist,” said Masekesa.
Mutare City Rovers chairman and ward 18 councillor Kudakwashe Chisango said they had engaged the council to come up with a stronger security wall to avoid such problems in the future.
“We had to engage council security to help during the game against United Lions and we have now approached the council to come up with a stronger security wall and our hope is to have a 12 inch war to replace the damaged one,” said Chisango.
During the game, which Mutare City Rovers went on to win by three goals to nil, council security could be seen roaming around the ground with dogs to prevent more chancers from sneaking into the stadium.
Mayor Tatenda Nhamarare said council should quickly look into the matter and rectify the problem.
“As council, we going to quickly look into the matter even if it means going to take something from our coffers so that we repair our ground as it will continue to play host for more games,” said Nhamarare.sport
