Shurugwi artist grabs award, dreams big

Elcee Gweja

Samukelisiwe Ngwenyama

SHURUGWI – Local artist, Lazarus Chipangura, whose stage name is Elcee Gweja, who boasts three albums to his name, is looking forward to a more fruitful experience in the industry after this year’s release of his single ‘Kajongwe’ which is enjoying good airplay on ZBC radio stations.
The young and humble South Africa-based artist from Shurugwi has worked hard to put together music and release studio albums against all the odds.
Earlier this year, the 24-years-old musician received a boost in his music career when he scooped an award as the best Afro pop male artist at the Zimba Nice music awards.
He says his passion for music had pushed him to make a home studio in Shurugwi where he practiced and taught himself to produce music beats and songs with the help of his brothers Nick and Wane some long time back.
He continued working on his own after his brothers left the country in 2009 as he believed that there was a good future coming if he remained committed.
His toil later saw him producing his first album titled Gweja ndiani in 2013, Mubato wangu in 2015, Yours and hers in 2016 and Kajongwe which was released this year.
Kajongwe features Nox Guni, Betty Makaya, Phola from Nigeria, Athen Lyre from Uganda and Rash Boss from Cameroon.
Elcee told TellZim News in an interview that young people must focus on their dreams and work hard to make them come true despite the various economic limitations faced by upcoming musicians.
He said his own personal experiences as an artist were not all rosy and he had never expected to be where he is when he started working from his home studio.
“If your dream does not scare you, then it’s not big enough. Coming from a small town and having a humble background does not determine where you are going,” said Elcee.entertainment

Chiredzi man sodomises girl, asks to be beaten as punishment

Increase Gumbo

CHIREDZI – A Chiredzi man who was frightened with the possibility of going to jail, begged the father of a five-year-old girl he was caught sodomising to beat him up as penalty instead of reporting the matter to the police.
The Chiredzi Regional Magistrates Court heard that the father of the victim allegedly caught Dzingai Gwenzi of Plot 72 Zvidozvevanhu, Dhika, Buffalo Range in his (Gwenzi’s) bedroom having anal sex with his daughter.
The court, led by Regional Magistrate Judith Zuyu, heard that Gwenzi called the girl, who was in the company of her two little brothers, into his bedroom and ordered the brothers to vacate the room.
He then removed the girl’s pants and had anal sex with her once without the girl’s consent.
The court also heard that Gwenzi was not aware that the father of the girl was cutting bushes in a nearby field and the two little brothers, upset with being separated from their sister, cried out loudly and attracted the attention of their father.
The father then rushed to Gwenzi’s homestead only to find his two kids outside the yard and that was when he asked about the whereabouts of their sister and was told that she was in Gwenzi’s bedroom.
The father then opened Gwenzi’s bedroom only to find him abusing the little girl.
“I was shocked when I saw the state of my little girl, Gwenzi was having sex with my child from the back. He then pleaded with me to beat him and not report the case to the police…I was so hurt and I told him that if I were to beat him, I would kill him so it was better to report the matter,” said the father.
Gwenzi denied abusing the girl saying she was simply playing on his bed when her father arrived.
He was later remanded in custody waiting for his judgement tomorrow (Friday).

UN lauds MSU’s STI fight

Cheikh Tidiane

Prince Danda

GWERU – The United Nations Population Fund (UNFPA) Zimbabwe country representative, Cheikh Tidiane last week praised Midlands State University (MSU) for leading the fight against sexually transmitted infections.
Speaking during the launch of a state-of -the-art model health resource centre at the MSU Gweru campus, Tidiane praised the university for placing great importance on the sexual health of young people.
“Let me commend the leadership of this university for placing such great importance on equipping young people with the necessary life skills and information related to their sexual reproductive health and rights by opening this resource centre. UNFPA is extremely proud to be part of this because it strongly resonates with our mandate,” Tidiane said.
The health facility, which boasts pool tables, computers, HIV and Aids literature, a boardroom and counselling room, is the brainchild of the United Nations Population Fund (UNFPA) and Students and Youth Working on reproductive Health Action Team (SAYWHAT).
Tidiane also indicated many young people were exposed to the danger of STIs due to inadequate access to sexual and reproductive health information.
“Many young people in Zimbabwe continue to suffer from such problems as unwanted pregnancies, HIV and Aids, unsafe abortions and STIs due to, among many other reasons, lack of access to sexual and reproductive health information and services thus limiting their full potential,” Tidiane said.
Students also celebrated the efforts of the university in the fight against STI’s, and recommend that the model be replicated in other institutions with urgency to protect the country’s demographic dividend.
“As students, we are celebrating a library on sexual reproductive health and recreation centre in the same breadth. We thank MSU, Saywhat and UNFPA. It reminds us that rights come with responsibility. We are looking forward to the extension of this service to other tertiary institutions,” said Hastings Tengende, a student and peer educator at the university.
Youths constitute over 60 percent of the country’s 13 million population. The 2015 Zimbabwe Demographic Health Survey states that one in 10 adolescent girls give birth each year while HIV prevalence stands at 6,7 percent in the same group.local

Mwenezi RDC embarks on proposed by-law sensitisation

Cephas Shava

MWENEZI – The Mwenezi Rural District Council (RDC) last week embarked on a district-wide whirlwind sensitisation campaign for proposed by-laws with the public expressing divergent views on the matter.
Many contributors said they fully acknowledged the intended purpose of the proposed by-laws especially those that seek to protect the environment from further harm but pointed out that awareness has always been inadequate.
Among other things, they said many environmental offences were fuelled by lack of knowledge of the regulations.
“As council, you should vigorously disseminate information concerning the contents of the by-laws so that everyone becomes fully informed. You should not just come and arrest people for violating the by-laws they are not aware of.
“Besides that, some departments are merely existing in name; since we were resettled in 2000, the department responsible for pegging contour ridges in our fields has never visited us,” said a participant from ward 16.
Contributors who live in areas close to the Masvingo – Beitbridge highway expressed concern over cross border buses which they accused of being among the worst offenders when it comes to littering.
They pointed out that they often wake up to the sight of piles of scattered garbage that would have been dumped in the night by cross border buses that stop at undesignated points for recess along the highway.
The by-law sensitisation programme, which saw an interactive two-way communication between the community and the RDC, were also supported by the Ministry of Health and Child Care.local

Government, business letting Chiredzi down

Charles Muchatukwa

TellZim News Reporter

CHIREDZI – The seeming reluctance on the part of government and the corporate sector to clear their rate arrears with Chiredzi Town Council is militating against efforts to improve service delivery, TellZim News has been told.
In an interview, town secretary Charles Muchatukwa revealed that council was owed in excess of five million US dollars mainly by government and the business sector.
“The business community owes us $3 047 225, government departments and institutions $332 883, the markets $872 666 and residents $833 684. Business seems unwilling to pay rates and we are suing those who do not want to pay what they owe,” said Muchatukwa.
He praised ordinary residents for making huge efforts to clear their rate arrears from a whopping two million US dollars last year to the current figure.
Muchatukwa also said council had a huge service delivery backlog especially in the neglected areas like Makondo and its workers were going for months without pay due to erratic revenue inflows.
Town chairperson Francis Mayo also lamented what he called was a propensity to quickly complain over perceived incidences of poor service delivery when no similar zeal is displayed when it comes to payment of rates.
“The problem we have as council is that the very people who complain over service delivery are the same people with high bills yet to be paid. We have workers with four months without pay and all that is caused by non-payment of rates; our main source of revenue,” said Moyo.
In most towns and cities, government departments like security services, education and health institutions owe millions of dollars’ worth of unpaid rates.
Earlier this year, City of Masvingo cut off water supplies to the provincial education offices at Wigley House due to continuous non-payment of rates.
As of January 2016, the city was owed in excess of 16 million US dollars by government departments, a factor that has contributed to the deterioration of service delivery in the city.local

Allied Timbers workers, police clash

Part of the goup of the former Allied Timbers workers who camped at the company premises

Nashe Mahachi

MUTARE – Former Allied Timbers contract workers who camped at the company’s Nyakamete Industrial Area premises for almost three weeks demanding outstanding wages they are owed spent last Friday night in police cells after mine management decided to take drastic action against them.
They were later transported back to their respective bases awaiting payment of the money they are owed.
A total of 100 former workers from Chimanimani, Gwindingwi, Erin and Staplefod were camped at number 6 Hellens Drive, Nyakamete Industrial Area, Mutare.
They camped and slept in the corridors and in the company boardroom to pressure bosses to expedite payment of the outstanding money.
The former workers are being owed an average of 17 months wages and the group that camped at the premises also included women and children.
One worker from Chimanimani, Pfungwa Jakata attempted to commit suicide at the company’s premises.
Jakata was rushed to Mutare Provincial Hospital where he was treated and discharged.
Allied Timbers Public Relations (PR) executive Veronica Gutu said the company will pay the former workers their dues saying she regretted the attempted suicide case.
“We heard of one worker who wanted to commit suicide. As a company we are going through the financial challenges other company are going through.
“We tried to make payments arrangements but the former workers were not in agreement and we ended up calling the police for them. We will definitely settle everything, we will pay them in installments starting with their current salary,” she said.local

Ngwena watchout!

Kkkkkk mukati muchinda anonzi Kudzai Chipanga ndikwaye imi? Mapombi wondered and is still wondering how can President Robert Mugabe be equated to an angel? I am trying to figure out which heaven will that be where Mugabe will be seated next to the Almighty Lord choosing the righteous vachipinda denga.
Mapombi is convinced Chipanga anga anwa musombodhiya when he said this nonsense in Marondera. Or, due to lack of education and wisdom, he ended up likening Mugabe to an angel nekuda kwekugumirwa nezvekutaura. E-eh komadofo hamuzive kuti anogumirwa chero neOne plus One chaiyo kkkkkkk.
Chipanga should be reminded that heaven is not like Zimbabwe where Mugabe can do anything while members in Zanu PF cheer him. If Zimbabwe is the heaven Chipanga was talking about then he was very right because Mugabe has the power to do anything from nepotism to creating a Mugabe dynasty. Anything!
Mapombi has since realised that Chipanga is not so educated and he should be pardoned for not knowing the difference between Zimbabwe and heaven. His knowledge and understanding begins and ends with Zanu PF – he does not know anything outside Zanu PF bootlicking politics. But don’t forget mukasekerera benzi parufu rinotiza nechitunha makatarisa.
We have known quite a number of comrades who were experts in bootlicking but iyezvino vari kupi? Kkkk bvunzai vana Webster Shamu of the ‘Mugabe is Cremora’ kuti zvakamira sei muZanu PF. Anyway, what else can one expect from Chipanga.  Dzungu hakusi kungwara veduwe.
Let Mapombi not waste time talking about useless people like Chipanga when there are more critical issues to attend to.
As a loving and caring sister, I have tried several times to warn Emmerson Mnangagwa kuti ukaita zvekutamba chigaro hauchilume icho.
Mapombi heard the Gushungo 40 (G40) faction has decided to divert attention from Saviour Kasukuwere by introducing Dr Sydney Sekeramai into the succession matrix.  Kasukuwere is no longer any issue these days and all the attention is now on Sekeramayi. Even your state controlled media is trying to attack Professor Jonathan Moyo for correctly pointing out that Sekeramayi has better chances of succeeding Mugabe.
Prof Moyo only made an announcement and he should not be punished for that because zvakatogarirwa dare izvi and the truth is the Zezurus are now ready to announce Sekeramayi as Mugabe successor – Ngwena iripo yakatarisa kudai.
I often laugh when I hear people say Ngwena has the backing of security service chiefs kkkkkkkk vakomana ngatisanyeperana. He has the backing of few individuals and kana chachaya chaiko sezvazvava kuda kuita izvi anosara pachena.
As I see it, the Zezurus will never allow a Karanga to lead this nation and Mapombi, like I once said, Sekeramayi is considered a dark horse in the race to succeed Mugabe but iyezvino atozouya zvine power.
I laughed kusvika ndanzwa mapapu when I read an article in The Sunday Mail saying ‘Back off, Sekeramayi tells Professor Moyo’ kkkkkkkkk if the defence minister is not really interested then he could have said a lot more than a one sentence he is quoted in the story.  The truth, to come out soon, is that Mugabe has now decided to introduce the successor in the name of Sekeramayi and sorojena vanotochida chinhu ichi manje.
My dear brother Ngwena, can you listen and listen very carefully; Mapombi is sensing danger here and the 2004 disappointment may repeat itself here. Don’t you dare forget that you lost the vice presidency to Joice Mujuru in 2004 despite being endorsed by eight out of 10 provinces and had to wait for 10 good years to make a comeback.
I can safely tell you guys that Ngwena is slowly but surely losing the game now unless he does something. Sekeramayi, by virtue of being a Zezuru or him coming from the Zezuruland, stands a better chance compared to Mnangagwa, a Karanga.
The problem with Mnangagwa is that he disappointed a lot of Cdes since 2004; quite a number were sacrificed since the Tsholotsho declaration in 2004 to the recent purge yana Chris Mutsvangwa iyi. These people were expecting Ngwena to take action but to no avail, and as a result, they are losing patience and they want him to join them in the terraces as well.
As long as Ngwena remains quiet and continues to watch Team Lacoste being sacrificed for his sake, then Sekeramayi will soon be anointed Mugabe successor musingade muchida.  And to be honest, he is more appealing than the Croc.
Ngwena, it’s time to confront Mugabe and say mudhara makura chindipaiwo chitanda. Period! Hapachada mbwende apa. Be aggressive and confront him. Mapombi wishes General Solomon Mujuru was still alive ndiye anga ane zvivindi hake not these cowards.  If you cannot face him just play him song yaTuku yekuti ‘Bvuma wachembera’ then wotobvunza kuti mudhara song munoinzwa sei iyi and you start conversation from there kkkkkkk.
Anyway, it’s up to Mnangagwa to remain quite or take action now. Hapana chakaipa kutaurirana chokwadi kuti mudhara nyika mazoivondonga iyi yava mamvemve chimbondipaiwo chindatanda ndiedze kugadzirisa zvinhu. Face to face.
By the way, I heard Mugabe left the country again this week for UN what what kkkkkk kunobviwa neiko bamboo vangu. Anyway, enjoy the trips and allowances Cdes.
It’s almost lunch time let me go ndindokanga zvangu maputi angu for lunch. Ivo vanodya zvikafu zvakanaka ini ndichidya maputi every day but still ndiri kungorarama. But before I go, I heard Mphoko dzakaita imwe new one futi kkkkkkkk blazo uyu haa-a mahwani chaiwo. Mapombi heard he went with his Grade Three grandchild on a government trip. Kkkkk kutoti muzukuru imborega kuenda kuchikoro umbokwira ndege. Imwe abuse of government resources inozonyanya. Dai akaitiwa iye President blazo uyu chokwadi taichiona, aiuya kuno kwaDr Grace Mugabe Trading Centre kuzotsvaga Mapombi chokwadi. Imagine a whole acting president stooping so low zvekuenda kundopopota kucamp yemapurisa. Hahaha hakuna leadership yakadai. Never! Mboko imboko!mapombi

MP Chimedza, Mahofa renew rivalry in Gutu South

. . . six candidates  ready for the hot seat

TellZim Reporter

Incumbent Zanu PF legislator for Gutu South Dr Paul Chimedza and Senator Shuvai Mahofa, who hails from the same constituency, are sworn enemies and they do not see eye to eye.
The enmity seems to have begun when Mahofa, tried but in vein, to block Dr Chimedza from contesting Gutu South in 2013 and the two have renewed their rivalry as preparations for party primaries begin ahead of the 2018 general elections.
Mahofa, who is the Minister of State for Provincial Affairs for Masvingo, was humiliated in the first round after her frontrunner Dr Vengai Guni was trounced by the former Deputy Minister of Health and Child Care at 2013 primaries and the female veteran politician is hoping for a counter in the forthcoming party primaries.
Nicknamed Chikoforo (Cultivator), an agricultural equipment used for weeding the fields), Mahofa is surely planning a massive comeback, with a new candidate of course. Though Mahofa is yet to announce the new candidate, it emerged that she religiously discredits Chimedza at every opportunity and she often tells party supporters there that she will soon introduce the candidate people should vote for.
Mahofa is one of the Team Lacoste faction kingpins in Masvingo province and being the minister in charge of the province gives her considerable advantage over Chimedza, a suspected Generation 40 (G40) sympathiser.
Chimedza survived the chop for allegedly being a ‘Gamatox’ member when former vice president Joice Mujuru and other Zanu PF senior officials were kicked out for allegedly plotting to topple President Robert Mugabe from power in 2014.
The soft spoken MP was suspended from holding any party activity in the constituency for at least two years before he was cleared of any wrongdoing following the realignment of Zanu PF factional politics into Team Lacoste and G40 now that Gamatox was dead.
His suspension is said to have been influenced by Mahofa who still harboured deep resentment against the junior minister who dared challenge her in 2008 and beat her preferred candidate in 2013.
As a result of the suspension, Chimedza was forced to suspend most of the projects he was undertaking among them the electrification three primary schools and a secondary school and construction of a state-of-the-art solar-powered clinic in ward 28 where he comes from.
The bricks and the poles that Chimedza bought for the clinic and school electrification projects respectively are still lying idle in the constituency. Hopefully Chimedza will be able to complete the projects before 2018 general elections.
If the elections will be free and fair, Chimedza will win the party primaries again. However, now that Mahofa is in a more strategic and powerful position in the province, she will fight hard to influence the election outcome, either by hook or crook, to ensure that Chimedza is down and out.
With G40 becoming very unpopular in Masvingo province, Chimedza should really work hard to prove that he is worthy being re-elected.
Zimbabwe National Liberation War Collaborators Association (Ziliwaco) national chairperson Pupurai Togarepi’s name has also been thrown into the game, with some political punters touting the deposed Zanu PF youth leader as the one who could pose the biggest threat to Chimedza’s survival.
Togarepi is believed to be in the Team Lacoste camp and his star had been fast rising in Zanu PF until after President Mugabe celebrated his 92nd birthday at Great Zimbawe monuments in February last year when G40 managed to pull the rug from under his feet and elevated Kudzai Chipanga in his stead.
Since then, Togarepi went into hibernation for some time as his G40 nemesis used their momentary upper hand in the party to exert pressure on Team Lacoste. His chances in Gutu South, however, cannot be underestimated because his faction seems to be gaining the upper hand in the party now, and the Herald and other State-controlled newspapers have lately been giving him unfettered space as a way of rehabilitating his career.
There are also other less known names that have also been mentioned as having an interest of contesting the Gutu South seat on a Zanu PF ticket including Josphat Sarukore Hungwe who comes from Nemakonde in ward 28. He is also said to enjoy the cover of Mahofa although it is not clear whether she will go as far as endorsing his candidature in the primaries ahead of the likes of Dr Guni.
Sarukore is understood to be a man of little means, a factor that may impede his momentum in the campaign that will likely feature the other candidates who have more resources. He has his own capital, though, in the form of the ‘green bombers’ with which he works in Patrick Zhuwao’s Ministry of Youth.
John Dhauramanzi, a prominent Harare businessman is also said to be eyeing the constituency under the National People’s Party (NPP) ticket. Dhauramanzi is said to be well resourced and has been sponsoring most of the NPP activities in Masvingo province including its party’s president Joice Mujuru’s rallies.
Mujuru visited Gutu South recently where she addressed a rally at Maungwa business centre and it seems like the party has gained a lot of ground in the constituency if the attendance at the recent rally is anything to go by. However, Dhauramanzi is said to have crossed path with NPP national chairperson elect Dzikamai Mavhaire and that might dampen his chances of winning party primaries, if there is to be any.
Those who claim to know Mavhaire very well said the former Zanu PF politburo member is a tactician when it comes to elbowing politics.  Having successfully pushed out Claudios Makova and Kudakwashe Bhasikiti from Masvingo who were threats to his interests, Mavhaire might influence another person to contest in Gutu South in 2018 general elections thereby elbowing out Dhauramanzi.
Since NPP has rubbished a possible coalition of opposition parties saying they can only agree to it if Mujuru is the leader, then the interested candidates will not much be affected by the coalition talks among opposition parties currently underway because their leader will never lead the grand coalition – in other words NPP will go it alone because its demands are outrageous.
If things remain as they are then Dhauramanzi will face candidates from Zanu PF and Movement for Democratic Change led by Morgan Tsvangirai (MDC-T) at 2018 general elections.
The MDC-T is likely to be represented by Harare lawyer Erium Musendekwa, who lost to Chimedza on July 31, 2013. Hopefully, he will convince the electorate that he is worthy representing them in the national assembly. No other candidates have shown interest to contest Musendekwa from MDC-T so far.
The MDC-T’s Musendekwa is likely to win 2018 elections as we are likely to witness a ‘bhora musango’ from Zanu PF if Mahofa imposes candidate, which is most likely to be the case.

Teacher convicted over laptop

Cephas Shava

MWENEZI – A 34-year-old teacher who had been on the run for the past two years after seizing someone’s laptop for failing to pay a US$20 debt, was last week convicted of unauthorised borrowing by Magistrate Honest Musiiwa.
Life Takavada of Chikandiwa village under Chief Negari, whom others said taught at Results Oriented College in Harare, was convicted on his own plea of guilty and sentenced to twenty days behind bars or alternatively pay US$60 fine.
The State’s case, as presented led by prosecutor Patience Mutsikwi, was that on September 4, 2015 at around 10:00 hrs, Takavada took the Samsung laptop with a net value of US$400 from Alfred Beta who had failed to settle the debt.
After taking the laptop, Takavada disappeared and went on to ignore repeated phone calls by police at Rutenga instructing him to bring back the laptop.
Beta later told TellZim News that with the help of social media, he managed to locate Takavada who had been reluctant to divulge his whereabouts though he, on several occasions, would entertain some phone calls.
“I was sure that Takavada was in Harare but I was not certain about his exact location. So I sent messages to different WhatsApp groups pleading for anybody with knowledge of his whereabouts to assist me.
“I eventually received a tip off so I visited his workplace in the company of three police officers and we ambushed him during break time. He was really taken by surprise because when he saw me, he tried to flee and resist arrest but the police officers overpowered him,” said Beta.local

Chiredzi man rapes niece, infects her with syphilis

Increase Gumbo

CHIREDZI – A man from Makonye village under headman Mupapa, Chief Sengwe, is in trouble for allegedly raping his then 13-year-old niece and infecting her with syphilis in January 2016.
Alex Sithole appeared before Magistrate Judith Zuyu who heard that sometime in January last year, Sithole allegedly met the minor, who is related to his wife, and dragged her into the bush where he raped her once, gave her a dollar after the act and ordered her not to report the case.
In the second count, it is alleged that at an unknown date but in the same month, Sithole raped the girl and threatened her with a knife, ordering her not to report the case to the police.
In the third count, but again on an unknown date, Sithole raped the girl and threatened to kill her if she ever reported the case to anybody.
The matter came to light in January 2017 after the girl’s aunt (Sithole’s wife) noticed that her niece was not walking properly before taking her to Chomupani Clinic where the girl was diagnosed with syphilis.
In his defence, Sithole, who seemed to be confident at ease with the proceedings, refuted all the three counts and said he had consensual sex with the girl.
“I did not rape her, I was in love with her. She came to my house while my wife and children were at the fields and I asked her for sex and she closed her face with both hands while smiling. I assumed she had accepted and we went on to have sex,” said Sithole.
Sithole also told the court that he himself had never been diagnosed with any Sexually Transmitted Infection (STI) so he could not be the one who infected the girl.
However, Sharai Mationesa, a nurse who treated the girl, told the court that Syphilis was a long term infection so it was ordinary that the symptoms began to appear after one year of the alleged rape.
The case was later postponed to a later date for continuation of trial with Moreblessing Rusere standing for the State.local
