23 April 2017, CHIVHU – There was drama at Philjen Lodge recently when Chikomba Rural District Council assistant auditor Bornwell Madhuveko used his teeth to tear off the left thumb of one Ronald Mafuka who had had a dispute with a staff member at the lodge.
A police report was made following the incident and Madhuveko was arrested but Mafuka later withdrew the case after agreeing to an out-of-court settlement.
The agreed terms are that Madhuveko pays Mafuka a sum of US$4000 as compensation for injuries caused and he had already paid US$1000 by the time of writing.
On the day in question, sources said, a female staff member at the lodge who is related to Madhuveko accidentally hit Mafuka with a broken glass bottle leading to a minor misunderstanding which was however quickly resolved.
Madhuveko is however said to have followed Mafuka when he was leaving the place, grabbed him by the lapels and bit him hard on the finger before leaving him wriggling with pain in a pool of blood.
“He tore my finger apart and I have people who came my rescue to thank. I did not fight back but I warned him that what he was doing was wrong. I withdrew the case from the police because it would probably have cost him his family and job,” said Mafuka.
“I don’t know what got into him because I had already settled my dispute with his relative. As for now, I am getting medical attention from the doctors but the pathetic part of the story is that I have lost my finger but I had to forgive him and settle the matter in a gentlemen’s way,” said Mafuka.
Madhuveko could not be reached for comment by the time of going to press.local, topnews

Satanism scare at Chivhu schools

23 April 2017, CHIVHU – Some parents with children attending Chivhu Primary and Liebenberg High are contemplating withdrawing their children from the schools following what they said was an endless string of paranormal incidents rocking the schools.
On closing day last term, one female pupil at Liebenberg was reportedly found lying in the middle of Marondamashanu road and the confused pupil could not explain how she got to be there.
The passerby who first saw the girl lying on the road was reluctant to speak to this reporter fearing to suffer the same fate.
A few weeks ago, a Grade 4 pupil at Chivhu Primary School is said have started shivering strangely and rolling her eyes.
Puzzled teachers and other pupils are said to have witnessed the pupil producing fire-like elements in her armpits, forcing them to call her father who disclosed that the child had once brought home a watch she had been given by a neighbour (name withheld).
The father is said to have told the teachers that he had ordered the girl to go and dump the watch far away but she soon started having nightmares and seeing visions of the watch calling her to come and pick it up where she had thrown it.
“We are still in shock because we do not know what is happening to our child. I cannot disclose more as for now but I suspect issues to do with Satanism,” said a relative to the girl who preferred anonymity.
One Liebenberg High staff member told TellZim News that inexplicable faintings are often experienced at the school with girls being the most vulnerable victims.
“We are used to it and it affects mainly girls who just collapse and wake up at the hospital. It’s hard to understand because even medical practitioners have no explanation,” said the source.
The source also revealed that one girl from the school had recently tried to commit suicide but could not reveal what was troubling her.local

Chiefs clash with Zaka RDC

ZAKA – Local chiefs last week blasted Zaka Rural District Council (ZRDC) for what they claimed to be a blatant failure to give them due respect and turning to them only when their cooperation is needed.
The matter arose in a full council meeting last week after the District Administrator (DA) Victor Zinanga and the chiefs  present were asked to encourage villagers to pay the development levy.
Incumbent Chief Nhema, Rangarirai Bwawanda said council management often disregards the position of chiefs and only recognise them they want to use them.
“Ndakauya pano ndichida macheya ndikanzi naChatikobo uyo agere apo (pointing to the council admin Rambisayi Chatikobo) akati hazviiti kuti ndikupei, asi zvino mava kuda kuti tikubetserei kuwana levy iyoyo. Munotidherera asi muchitishandisa,” fumed Nhema.
Upon hearing that, council chairperson Sebastian Musundire warned Chatikobo not to disrespect chiefs and to accord whatever help they need.
Chief Nhema’s claims were supported by Chief Nyakunhuwa, Courage Mashavave and Chief Bota who both pointed out that councillors seldom consult councillors on many issues.
“It is these councillors who bypass us and work directly with village heads that we don’t even recognise. That is causing confusion among the people,” said Chief Bota.
On a different note, Zinanga accused Council Chief Executive Officer (CEO) David Majaura of overlooking him and not reporting many important issues to him.
“I only hear some of the important developments which take place here by rumour but yet we have a CEO who should brief me. Sometimes I have to call him to get information which he is supposed to bring on his own in the first place,” said Zinanga.
Majaura, however, accused Zinanga of lying saying nothing like that had ever happened.
“This issue is now being personalised I guess, the DA has never come to my office or called as he is saying,” said Majaura.local

MWENEZI – The Mwenezi Rural District Council (MRDC) last Wednesday embarked on a massive clean-up campaign at Neshuro growth point as part of wider efforts to maintain a healthy environment.
The European Union (EU) – funded Local Authority Capacity Enhancement Project (LACEP), last year allocated funds to the rural council to help in the improvement of solid waste management.
The clean-up campaign also saw the installation of refuse bins at the growth point.
MRDC executive officer for Agriculture and the Environment, Kudzai Sirewu praised LACEP and other stakeholders for making the campaign a success.
“As MRDC we really appreciate the funds received from LACEP. They made this campaign a resounding success. Besides that, we also thank other stakeholders who chipped in with different forms of assistance.
“These include Mwenezi Development Training Centre, Mr Joosbi Omar who donated 10 bins and foodstuffs and other various stakeholders who participated and contributed to the campaign,” said Sirewu.
The guest of honour, Kenneth Madziva, who represented the Mwenezi District Administrator (DA), said the fact that people of all age groups participated in the campaign reflected strong commitment by all citizens to environmental cleaniliness.
He said the clean-up campaign acted as a powerful message that a clean environment is critical to public health and urged people not to throw litter everywhere.
Pupils from Mwenezi Government High School and Masogwe Primary School also took part in the clean-up campaign.
The rural council is also scheduled to carry-out a similar campaign at Rutenga growth point in March.local

We are underfunded, says Parirenyatwa

Beatific Gumbwanda

CHIREDZI – The Minister of Health and Child Care, Dr David Parirenyatwa has blamed the calamitous state of the country’s public health system on meagre budgetary allocations from the national treasury.
Speaking in an interview with TellZim News in Chiredzi, Dr Parirenyatwa defended his ministry’s management of the country’s health delivery system, saying lack of resources was to blame for the awful situation in most public health institutions.
His comments come in the wake of the suspension of the BCG vaccination programme at Chiredzi General Hospital due to the shortage of syringes.
“The health system needs more money than the US$500 million that the budget proposed. We need approximately US$1.3 billion in order for us to deliver good services. The situation is bad because we have few resources including inadequate drugs, syringes and drips,” Dr Parirenyatwa said.
He also said Chiredzi General Hospital needs a new maternity ward to cater for the rapid population growth in the district and urged the council-run poly clinic to do more on antenatal and maternity care so as to relieve pressure at the hospital.
“We toured Chiredzi General Hospital some time ago and discovered that it has a very small maternity wing. There is an urgent need to build a new maternity wing to cater for the increased demand for maternity health services,” he said.health

21 April 2017, Farmers in the perennially dry Summerton area have praised the AgriSeeds ZAP 61 maize seed which they planted at the onset of the rainy season for its adaptability to local climatic conditions and soil types leading to high yields.
Farmers gathered at Clarence Maunganidze’s homestead in Summerton a field day which saw farmers showcasing their high yields.
Using the hybrid seed variety, Maunganidze managed to produce 26 tonnes of maize on a four-hectare piece of land.
“We have been getting poor yields over the years because of poor farming methods but now we have been taught to plant on a small piece of land and minimise on output.
I planted 20 kg of ZAP 61 and managed to harvest 26 tonnes which has never happened in Summerton. This season, the whole community has very good yields like never before,” said Maunganidze.
The field day was attended by Chief Zimuto, headman Gilbert Gwekwe, AgriSeeds officials and Agritex officials.agriculture

Masvingo wins labour case

Mayor Hubert Fidze

The dust seems to have settled down in the labour wrangle between the City of Masvingo and its former employees represented by the Zimbabwe Urban Council Workers Union (ZUCWU) who took the city fathers to court over US$3.5 million salary arrears in 2013 resulting in many service delivery cars, including the mayoral Mercedes Benz being attached.
The Labour Court last week threw out the case saying the council can now take back their cars and ordered that the award which had been won by ZUCWU be set aside.
The court also ordered both parties to bear their own legal costs.
Town Clerk Adolf Gusha said justice has been finally served although the legal battle had put the city at a disadvantage.
“The attachment of the service delivery cars was a major blow to the city council. The city lost a big deal in pursuit of justice. It is quite fortunate that the council did not collapse after the cars were taken away.
“I can safely say service delivery was not much affected by the legal battle becaue we managed to buy new vehicles to replace some of those which had been attached.
“The cars have deteriorated but we can put a few dollars to service them and they will be up and running again. We had not abandoned them since we carried maintenance on them every two weeks,” said Gusha.local

TellZim Reporter

21 April 2017, The Bulawayo High Court recently cleared Masvingo businessman Taurai Mudzviti, popularly known as Bucho, of charges of contravening the country’s precious stones regulation laws following his arrest at Plumtree border post in November 2015 for unlicenced possession of 3.2 kg of gold.

When contacted for comment, Mudzviti said he had obtained court orders for the release of his property seized by the State.
“Everything is fine now. We ended up in the High Court and I was cleared of the charges last month. The charges were a mistake. For more details you can contact my lawyer Admire Rubaya,” Mudzviti said.
Rubaya, however, promised to send the full details of the case but had not done so by the time of going to print.
Bucho was arrested together with Joshua Mabika when detectives from the minerals and border control unit stopped the car that the duo were traveling in en route to Botswana.local, topnews

Women urged to participate in farming

Elizabeth Mpofu

Peter Chawapiwa

MASHAVA – Women have been urged to take an active role in farming as a way of empowering themselves and enabling the consumption of healthier diets at community and family level.
Speaking at a Zimbabwe Smallholder Organic Farmers Forum (Zimsoff) – organised field day in Shashe Block near Mashava recently, the organisation’s chairperson, Elizabeth Mpofu said they were currently in the process of forming a farmer’s organisation for African women.
“Women must be actively involved in farming to supplement food reserves for a balanced food diet. As Shashe farmers, we must produce surplus food which can be supplied to institutions like schools and clinics for their own supplementary feeding schemes.
“This in turn will promote healthy living for our children who depend on food handouts from the government for such schemes,” said Mpofu, who also chairs La Via Campesina, an international farmers organisation.
She said the formation of a continental organisation for female farmers will enable women to visit other countries where they will share ideas on farming.
Speaking at the same occasion, Zimsoff national co-ordinator Nelson Mudzingwa said they were unhappy that seed companies concentrated exclusively on the production of hybrid seed maize.
“We have other food crops that contribute towards a balanced diet. Rapoko contains iron that is necessary for our blood, calcium for our bones and proteins for body building. Farmers must be enlightened on the production of small seed varieties and conservation farming which will enable them to diversify.
“Diversity means venturing into other areas like livestock and poultry production to supplement our food crops,” Mudzingwa said.
Participants at the field day had the opportunity to see for themselves what Zimsoff is doing in Shashe and to exchange ideas on soil and water conservation.agric, local

First Group of the Cloudera Hadoop Boot Camp Certification

GZU Vice Chancellor Prof R.J Zvobgo poses for a photo with some of the trainers and participants of the Boot Camp

21 April 2017, Harare – Great Zimbabwe University (GZU) in partnership with the Ministry of Higher and Tertiary Education, Science and Technology Development recently co-hosted a “Cloudera Hadoop Certification Boot Camp” in Harare.
The training was organised with Information Communication Technology (ICT) experts in mind and is the first of its kind to be held in Southern Africa as, in the past,  ICT experts from the African continent would access such a service only in India.
The Boot Camp, which was advertised only for a short time, still managed to attract 54 students who were split into two training sessions.
Each course was six days long and was facilitated by seasoned experts with more than 20 years of experience including Sai Kumar Pilla from India and Dr Panaishe Chaurunga, who boasts vast experience acquired in the United Kingdom and France.
GZU realised the need for the course in the Zimbabwean ICT sector and engaged stakeholders including Econet Wireless, TelOne, Powertel and other government institutions.
Prince Sibanda, an ICT expert from GZU who is also the co-coordinator of the Boot Camp, said being skills-based and very dynamic, ICT is a profession which constantly needs further training.
He said there was a dire need for ICT experts to learn about Cloudera Hadoop Certification and contribute to the development of the country as the course is very significant in the analysis of large amounts of data.
The initiative by GZU to improve the nation’s ICT knowhow dovetails with the STEM initiative which aims to improve technological systems in the country.
Regai Kanongota, a database administrator with Econet Wireless said the course had come in handy as his job entails processing data daily in order to analyse performance of the network.
He highlighted that the system currently being used had limitations on processing large volumes of data, with the Boot Camp offering something more appealing.
The two Boot Camp sessions ended with participants being awarded certificates of attendance at a closing ceremony officiated by GZU Vice Chancellor Professor Rungano Jonas Zvobgo who promised that the university will continue to ensure that people are given a chance to acquire critical skills.education
