Zaka cllrs demand motorbikes

Brighton Chiseva

ZAKA – Local councillors last week demanded that Zaka Rural District Council (RDC) buy motorbikes for them because other rural district councils had already done so for their councillors.
The matter was heard recently during a full council meeting at council offices at Jerera growth point.
The issue arose after finance committee chairperson Cllr Chrispen Watadza gave a report on the look and learn tour he recently had in Marondera and Mhondoro Ngezi RDCs, highlighting that the two local authorities had bought motorcycles and cellphones for their councillors.
The Human Resources Management committee, however, said Zaka RDC could afford to buy only cellphones for councillors.
District Administrator (DA) Victor Zinanga concurred, warning that the highly indebted local authority could not afford to buy bikes for cash or credit.
Council chairperson Sebastian Musundire was also of the view that council would be better advised to buy only phones for the councillors as a cost cutting measure since the country was approaching election time at which other councillors might not return.
Most councillors, however, vehemently opposed the idea, arguing that those who will fail to win back their wards in the 2018 elections would still be required to settle the outstanding bill.
“Who told you that we are living office? Even if we leave, we will pay up all the money. I want a bike not a phone which I can get anywhere outside,” said Cllr Chikomo.
Cllr Angeline Chipote criticised council for what she said was a failure to respect and take good care of its councillors.
“Hamungati nguva yapera. Imwe council yakapa macouncillors ayo mamotor bikes last month and imi muri kuti nguva yapera, maimbovepi,” said Chipote to the applause of other councillors.
After heated deliberations, councillors grudgingly accepted the resolution that council purchase only cellphones for them.local

Beware of army worm, sugarcane farmers warned

Beatific Gumbwanda

CHIREDZI – The Minister of Agriculture, Mechanisation and Irrigation Development; Dr Joseph Made has warned sugarcane farmers on the potential danger posed by the fall army worm to their crops, saying though recent efforts to control the destructive pest had largely borne fruit, there was no room for complacency.
Fall army wormy is native to tropical regions of the western hemisphere from the United States to Argentina but has found its way to Africa due to changing climatic conditions and heavy winds.
The pest, which gave maize and cotton farmers a hard time this year, is also said to have been imported through maize which was distributed to communities affected by the El Nino-induced drought last year.
“I want to indicate that the fall army worm is still there. As we approach the winter season, it’s on hibernation. It is in the maize, maize stalks, maize cobs and in sorghum. It is even in the grass, underneath the soil,” said Dr Made.
He also highlighted that the worm was a new phenomenon to most local farmers meaning there was still little knowledge on it.
“Many people don’t know about it, even the extension workers. So there is need for physical inspection of the grass and if green materials come out, it will quickly emerge,” he said.
Dr Made indicated that the fall army worm needs soft spots and sugarcane farmers should consult experts to find out whether it was hibernating in their crops or not.local

Dear my brother Tyson

Chakaona hama hachisekwi vakomana! Asika dindingwe ronaka richakweva rimwe kana rokwevewa roti mavara angu azara ivhu. Mapombi is not used to writing letters but just allow me to scribe one to Savior ‘Tyson’ Kasukuwere my dear brother, of course from another mother.
The word Savior simply means a rescuer or deliverer – and as you may all be aware that Tyson used to rescue others vanenge vapinda mupfumvu especially those from Gushungo 40 (G40). But from the look of things, he is not a savior anymore; in fact he needs to be saved also because the Crocodile is really after him. Zviya zvekuti garwe haridye chebamba ndezvenhema zviye iyezvino riri kuita zvekuvhima Tyson chaiko. Wish you good luck Ngwena!
Anyway, Tyson I write this to you as a loving and caring sister. I have noticed with despair how they want to sacrifice you now after a tremendous job you did together with Ngwena and others to oust Dr Joice Teurairopa Mujuru that year. That was a job well done! You did it in an artistic way – kubva mati Zimuroyi rekwaDotito. Kkkkkkkk vakomanaka! Zimuroyi?
Those who know English very well say if you live by the sword then you will die by the sword. Hanzi ukatamba nepfumo unofa nepfumo. Tyson, Mapombi is very sure you were in cloud nine when Mujuru was fired gore riye nhasi zvaiwana ngwarati kujaira kufura irere.
They say Ngwena is shrewd; personally I don’t know about that but one thing I am certain about is iwe akuda manje. Hanzi zvoto zvine mazera – vanoziva shona vanokuudza kuti Ngwena airevei apa Tyson.  I have nothing against Kasukuwere; in fact I can confess that Mapombi adores Generation 40 (G40) because she turned 41 recently and she believes kuti power ngaimbopiwawo vechidiki.  Ngwena ndomufarira hangu because ndiShumba hanzvadzi yamai vangu chaivo asi sekuru vanenge vakainonokera colgate mazino asati aora ava.
I have heard many people saying the attack on Tyson is unjust but let me be honest with you, Kasukuwere – please carry your cross. Dzungu ramaiita riye muchidzinga Mujuru nhasi zvakuwanawo.
You have been to Masvingo several times muchititonga madiro with your little unpopular boys imposing things on us. You even promised your loyal youths some stands sidelining us because we were not loyal to G40. Manje uchaenda netwuma youths twako itwotwo. I heard Ndavarombe swept bitterly and asked for forgiveness recently. Kkkkkkkkk hanzi ndaingonyengerwawo nevakuru kkkkkkkk vana Ndavarombe imi nxinxinxinxinxiiii. Tibvirei apa! Were you not the one who said we are now going for a bare fist fight with Team Lacoste? So wainyengerwa kutaura izvozvo? Nxaaa vanhu vaKasukuwere monetsa mhani.
Anyway, the truth is that Tyson will be around for a while – don’t forget he belongs to the Gushungo 40 faction. The faction belongs to the CEO himself – mind you zvava zvema tribe ka izvi? Mazezuru unconquerable! Really?
But that is the truth anyway, Mazezuru ndoane chinhu and havatodi nacho zvachose. Any average person would agree with Mapombi kuti President Robert Mugabe should be allowed to go home and rest. He served the country with distinction during his time but now nyika yava mamvemve iyi. He is now too old for the job. In fact he overstayed his welcome. Dai vana Mutasa makamurega akenda 2008 manje chionai makatiparira. Pakadai ndopaunoona Tsvangirai achitoti coalition naMutasa, nxaaa kutungana kwembudzi zvokwadi.
Like I said guys Kasukuwere is enjoying Bob’s protection and haaende zvekumhanya but the truth ndeyekuti hatichamuda. He must go the Mujuru way – the gamatox way. Even vana Chipanga and other youths have dumped Tyson. But Uncle Bob said no to the demonstrations and now whitehead Chombo has announced stringent conditions to be followed if members want to expel someone from the party. All this simply means leave Kasukuwere alone. Kkkkkk Zanu PF ndisinjonjo chaiyo – there is selective application of the law; some are dismissed without being called for hearing and others are said proper procedures should be followed when you want to expel them. Power so kaa, ma1.
It’s almost lunch time guys let me go ndindozvikangirwa hangu maputi angu for lunch ndisiyane neporitikisi idzi hadzina kwadzinondisvitsa. By the way, how is Dr Amai? It has been long – I am sure she is doing fine. Mapombi really miss her rants. Can someone organise a rally ndimbonzwirira zvangu zvituko ini ndigozotukawo vamwe kwedu kuDr Grace Mugabe Trading Centre uku.
Before I go, Mapombi is happy that we celebrated Independence Day commemorations in style. For the first time Mapombi saw Mr President vakagerwa zuda – since 1980 handina kumbovaona vakadaro ini – does this means something? Is it a sign of old age? Those in the inner circles tiudzeiwo tizive veduwe.
Anyway, the shave was really nice and I admired him. But the message was a bit offside hahahaha how could he say Zim-Asset has been a success since its introduction in 2013. How can he boast of improved agriculture and mining productions when the whole economy is decaying? He was mum on the high levels of unemployment in the country. Hahahahaha Mapombi is very sure Mr President is being misinformed chete. Anyway Happy Independence; Long Live Zimbabwe!mapombi

Councillor Tamiswa Njovana

Samukelisiwe  Ngwenyama

21 April 2017, SHURUGWI – Villagers in Jobolinko have expressed satisfaction with the development prospects of their area, saying their ward Councillor Tamiswa Njovana was doing a wonderful job to improve access to basic services.
People who spoke to TellZim News said being newly resettled, they would conventionally be expected to have the least access to public services like roads, schools and clinics.
Njovana has, however, sought to influence transformation of the area and has overseen the establishment of Jobolinko Clinic which boats a maternity ward.
“We used to travel to as far as Tongogara for health care so it used be hard for us in cases of sudden illnesses and emergencies especially during the night. We are glad that our councillor is representing us well in council and we are seeing development,” said one villager.
Others said they would want to see more leaders of the calibre of Njovana after the 2018 general elections.
“When people elect leaders, they want them to represent communal interests and not just to use those positions to enrich themselves. I am delighted that we have Cllr Njovana working hard to uplift our community,” said another villager.
Njovana told TellZim News that although there are resource challenges, he was working on more projects that include building a community centre, rehabilitating roads and food for work.
”We are faced with limitations in our resource mobilisation capacity and in getting volunteers to provide labour if there are no incentives but we are determined to succeed,” said Njovana.
He also said there was a two-year development plan which seeks to raise funds for the renovation of dilapidated schools, equip farmers and attract investors to explore the area’s rich cattle ranching potential.local

Salome Silindo poses for a photo with dignitaries including PA Fungai Mbetsa and City of Masvingo Town Clerk Adolf Gusha

Brighton Chiseva

21 April 2017, MASVINGO – Salome Silindo (21) from Bikita, was last week crowned Miss Independence Masvingo province after beating 13 other contestants at the Miss Independence finals held at Charles Austin Theatre.
Trish Sibanda from Chivi and Tamara Tembo from Mwenezi were  crowned first and second princesses respectively while Yolanda Manhenga  from Masvingo was crowned Miss Personality.
The hotly contested finals featured 14 contestants; two from each of Masvingo’s seven districts.
Speaking after the finals, Silindo admitted that the competition was tough and she did not expect to win, saying the achievement had however came as a huge leap forward in her modelling career.
“I am very excited to be crowned Miss Independence today because I was not expecting it. As you can see, the completion was tough but I made it. I want to be a great model. I expect to win again next year,” she said
Provincial Administrator (PA) Fungai Mbetsa, who was the guest of honour representing the Minister of State for Masvingo Provincial Affairs Shuvai Mahofa, urged the organisers to work hard to improve the programme which he said was helping to foster unity in the province.
“The camp grew bigger this time than at its inception. Each district is represented by two contestants and this shows unity in the province and I want to urge the organisers to work hard for the improvement of the programme,” said Mbetsa.
The contestants were urged to improve on military displays and to wear jungle boots or tennis which were worn by guerrillas during the liberation struggle since those are the judges’ area of special interest.
The models competed to outdo each other in four displays which are military, culture, African attire, nightwear and questions from the colonial era.
The pageant was introduced last year with fewer contestants than this year, proof that the competition is growing in popularity.entertainment

21 April 2017, MASVINGO – Great Zimbabwe University (GZU)’s Fusion Band last week formally launched their album titled Dangwe during a colourful event at Masvingo’s Civic Centre public hall.
Speaking during the event, GZU Vice Chancellor Professor Rungano Zvobgo pledged to support the group’s adventures.
“What these students have done has made the university proud. As a university, we focus on cultural and heritage studies as well as practical projects like this so that we make a positive change to our community.
“We will also support this band on any project they wish to embark on. To those who are guiding these young ones, I am giving you assurance that the pocket that gave you money for the first time is still full, just bring your proposals and we will support you in any way possible,” Prof Zvobgo said.
The humorous Prof Zvobgo also took the moment to tell the crowd how his brother, the late nationalist Edison Zvobgo, had discouraged his musical ambitions while still studying in India.
“I also have a music background you might be interested to hear. During my university days in India, I was a band member and played a guitar. Music is one of the things I love the most but my brother stopped me saying ndezvechirombe.
“My son has however taught me something about music. I was mad at him when I realised he sneaks out of the house to go and entertain revellers at night clubs but looking into his academic achievements, I have promised to buy him a set of drums.
“I have told this story so as to encourage you to see that music does not disturb your studies but it rather keeps you occupied and entertained,” Zvobgo said.
A copy of Dangwe went on auction and university registrar Sinikiwe Gwatidzo became the highest bidder at US$150. Other bidders were Prof Zvobgo (US$100) and Masvingo Mayor Hubert Fidze (US$70).
Also present at the event was Reformed Church University (RCU) Vice Chancellor, Professor Wiseman Magwa and veteran musician Bob Nyabinde.entertainment

New Helen McGhie head sleeps in the open

Brighton Chiseva

21 April 2017, Masvingo – The new Helen McGhie Primary School head Sheilla Deve and her family spent two cold nights sleeping in the open after outgoing head Horuno Zengeya failed to vacate the school house on time, TellZim News has learnt.
It is understood that Deve arrived from Mashava with her belongings on Saturday night, April 8, but had to camp outside with her family and goods because Zengeya and his family had still not moved as per expectation.
When contacted for comment, Deve refused to comment, referring all questions to the District school Inspector or the Provincial Education Director (PED) Zedius Chitiga who told TellZim News he was in the dark about the development.
“I am not aware of that issue but I will make inquiries and give you the information,” Chitiga said.
A source privy to the developments, however, said Zengeya was reluctant to leave the school.
“He feels he is being pushed out although he has been on retirement for five years now. He has been working on short-term contracts since his retirement but this time, the government has decided not to give him any more contract. He feels he has worked very hard to transform the school such that he can’t just leave empty-handed,” the source said.
No comment could be obtained from Zengeya by the time of going to print.local

Massive voter apathy in Mwenezi East

0

Female voters sit in a queue at Vilivili Primary School polling station; an unusual arrangement which led many to think that the voters had undergone some form of coaching prior to voting day. Normally voters stand in a queue when waiting to vote but at most poling stations in Mwenezi East voters were already seated in queues as early as 5 am.

Upenyu Chaota

21 April 2017, MWENEZI – Out of the approximately 47 000 people who registered to vote in the just ended Mwenezi East parliamentary by-election, about 20 000 managed to cast their votes with many saying they forgot the day of the election.
Zanu PF candidate Joosbi Omar was left embarrassed after being turned away from two wrong polling stations; Chatagwi Primary School and Vilivili. He only managed to vote on his third attempt at Muzhanjire polling station.
“A new chapter in development has been opened for the people of Mwenezi East. I will challenge myself to develop this constituency, something which my predecessors failed to do,” Omar after finally casting his ballot.
Omar went on to win by 18 790 votes, a resounding victory for a party that did not put much effort in the campaign relative to its previous approach to elections with more formidable opposition. Welcome Masuku of NCA and Turner Muhango of FZC got only 482 and 386 votes respectively
People from Mapapa and other areas, however, told TellZim News they had missed voting day because they confused the dates.
“We were shocked to hear that the election was already done. The information we got was that the election would be conducted on Sunday not Saturday. We spent the whole day busy with our daily routines and never noticed people were voting,” said one villager.
Voter queues were visibly dominated by women, some of whom  arrived at the polling stations as early as 05:00 hrs and sat in an orderly line; an unusual arrangement that led many to suspect that some voters had undergone pre-election coaching.
The voting day was also strikingly lacking in youth participation, a development which does not bode well with opposition efforts to penetrate the rural electorate ahead of 2018
Kudakwashe Bhasikiti, who withdrew form the race citing vote-buying and intimidation of his supporters by Zanu PF, dismissed the election as a farce, claiming that the low voter turnout showed people were tired of Zanu PF’s shallow pretences of democratic rule.
“People are no longer fools. They no longer want Zanu PF. Yes they (Zanu PF) have won but they should know they were running a race on their own. There is nothing to celebrate here,” said Bhasikiti.
“The number of people who voted in the by-election is less than the total votes I got in 2013 before we had added more than 20 000 adult voters who were displaced by the Tokwe-Mukosi floods and resettled here.
“They expected to get over 40 000 votes from the 48 000 registered voters but they could not get even half the figure despite dosing people with food handouts. A big story; I won in absentia. No hope for Zanu PF in the 2018 elections,” said Bhasikiti.local, top news

Be bold for change, women told

Nyaradzo Masvingo branch manager Mudhaya speaks at the event

Memory Rasa

MASVINGO – United Nations (UN) Ambassador for Woman Entrepreneurs in Zimbabwe, Angeline Mikiri last week urged women who gathered at Caravan Park for the belated International Women’s Day commemorations to work hard and claim their economic space.
The event was organised under the 2017 International Women’s Day theme ‘Be Bold for Change’ to help accelerate the fight for gender equality in economic circles.
The event was graced by prominent business women from Masvingo province and representatives of such organisations as Nyaradzo Group, Women of Substance, Girl Child Empowerment Trust, Ministry of Women Affairs and Masvingo Teachers College.
Mikiri said there was no reason why women should lag behind economically when they dominate men numerically.
“Women make up fifty two percent of our population but we are sidelined and we constitute the larger portion of the poorest people because we look down upon ourselves. Let us assume leadership so that we become decision makers because the more we are involved, the more we are heard,” said Mikiri.
Great Zimbabwe University (GZU) Dean of Students, Sarafina Mudavanhu said women must never settle for less but should aim for higher than average roles in their careers.
“I am always hurt with what female tertiary students go through. You have to value yourselves and learn to boldly say no. We cannot have security guards and lecturers taking advantage of you because you are lazy. Study and aim high and stop being abused for marks and Chicken Inn. It is unacceptable,” said Mudavanhu.
Girl Child Empowerment Trust director Morenlet Mawire encouraged hard work saying it was better to build a girl child than to repair a broken lady.
“It is never too late to cast our fears aside and stand for what is good for us as women. We must not expect any favours from anyone because we are capable of doing it on our own,” said Mawire.
Respectable poultry farmer and Women of Substance chairperson Sarah Munemo said women must not rely on handouts and token positions but must work for themselves.
“I am one woman who is against quotas and affirmative action because women are not less capable. I want women to be appointed into positions based on merit because I know that women are capable,” said Munemo.
Nyaradzo Group Masvingo branch manager Cecilia Mudhaya was also in attendance.local

Bloodbath at Sabi as makorokoza resist displacement

Itai Muzondo in Zvishavane

14 April 2017, ZVISHAVANE – There is serious trouble at the recently re-opened Sabi Gold Mine as informal gold miners (makorokoza), who had thrived on the 30-months-long closure of the mine, are now fiercely resisting losing their space.
Armed clashes between mine security personnel and the informal miners are continuing with several casualties having been recorded.
Deputy Minister of Mines Fred Moyo confirmed that several people had died in the fights at the mine.
“The story at Sabi is very sad considering that the mine had been closed for 30 months after which we managed to get a new investor. There are reports of illegal miners who had been looting from the mine during the time it was closed and when the mine reopened, they still want to stick to their practices.
“The report I am holding says illegals are throwing explosives at security details from the mine. Gunshots are even being fired in mining shafts; the kind of violence we are condemning in the Midlands’ mining sector,” Moyo said.
Mine manager Sithole said the mine had engaged the parent ministry to register the informal traders so that they provide them with gold claims.
“Violence is a challenge we are facing and we have since engaged the police who are doing constant checks at the mine. As Sabi, we do not want to operate that way because the five million capital injection will be under threat.
“In trying to resolve the challenge, we have engaged the ministry to register all those who want to go into the formal mining business so that we give them space to operate from which is out of our boundaries,” Sithole said.local, topnews
