01 March 2017, CHIVHU – A 16-year-old girl from Mugwenhi village under Chief Mutekedza in Sadza, exposed her rape by her uncle through letters she had written and intended to send to the rapist’s wife.
The 53-year-old rapist uncle, who appeared before Magistrate Fadzai Mutombeni, was slapped with a nine-year jail sentence after being convicted on counts of indecent assault and rape.
It was the State’s case that in August 2016, the complainant went to her uncle’s bedroom hut where she wanted to charge her cell phone but the uncle followed her, grabbed and fondled her breasts.
On the other day, the man took advantage of the absence of his wife from home and raped the girl in the hut where she had gone to put her phone on the charger.
Matters came to light when the man’s wife caught him kneeling down in the kitchen trying to kiss the girl who was asleep, but husband and wife decided to chase the girl to her father who lives in Wedza.
The complainant’s father only learnt about the case when he stumbled upon letters that her daughter had written to the uncle’s wife detailing the abuse.
The father reported the case to Wedza police leading to the arrest of the culprit.

01 March 2017, BIKITA – Former Bikita RDC CEO Johnson Bigger Mpamhadzi was last week sentenced to six months imprisonment or pay an alternative US$400 fine after he was convicted of culpable homicide following his involvement in a road accident which killed two children last year.
Mpamhadzi appeared before Bikita Resident Magistrate Caroline Tafira facing charges of culpable homicide.
The State led by Richard Nyamuomba alleged that on the April 29, 2016 at around 15:30 hrs, Mpamhadzi was driving along Mutare-Masvingo road.
Towards Nyika Growth Point, on reaching the 212 km peg, he saw a pedestrian, Ronald Munyeperi, trying to cross the road from left to right where his two friends Liliosa Chikozho and Brian Mauya were standing.
Mpamhadzi then lost control of the vehicle, swerved to the right and in the process hitting Munyeperi, Chikozho and Mauya who all fell to the ground.
Munyeperi died on the spot while Chikozho was pronounced dead upon arrival at Nyika clinic.
A report was made at ZRP Bikita Traffic and police attended the scene.
The vehicle sustained a damaged front at the bonnet and it was taken to ZRP Nyika for examination.
The State argued a case of negligent driving on the part of Mpamadzi, saying he was speeding and had failed to exercise high degree of caution when he saw the children playing close to the road.local

01 March 2017, MUTARE – Bridget Mhlanga (18) of House Number 10659, Federation, Dangamvura, and her accomplice, who is a minor, will spent two years behind bars after they were convicted of stealing US$6 500 from Mhlanga’s boyfriend.
Mutare Magistrate, Tracy Muzondo sentenced the duo to 24 months imprisonment with six months suspended for good behavior.
The minor, who was 14 when the offence was committed in October 2016, will serve her sentence when she turns 18.
It was the State’ s case that on October 30 last year, Mhlanga and her friend were cleaning Dawn Mazendure’s house but the minor searched Mazendure’s toolbox and found US$6 500 which she connived with Mhlanga to steal.
The two then shared the cash with Mhlanga getting US$3 000 while the minor got US$3 500. They then went to town where the minor gave her share to one Tafadzwa with Mhlanga giving hers to one Ambitious Machite.
It was only on November 4 when Mazendure checked his toolbox and found that his money was missing. He questioned Mhlanga who only told him her friend had once showed her the money. After investigations only US$240 was recovered from Machite.

01 March 2017, CHIVI – MDC-T supporters in Chivi have called on the Zimbabwe Electoral Commission (ZEC) to prioritise voter education in light of the new biometric voting system which will be used in the 2018 harmonised elections.
They said it was imperative that voters receive an education on the voting process as it was something that people were unfamiliar with.
“We hear that a new system is being put in place. We do not know how this system works and we believe that we talk on behalf of the generality of Zimbabweans.
“It is a new system and the people need some kind of awareness campaign.  We need to know how the system works. It is not enough to register as a voter when you do not know how the system that will be used operates,” said Tamuka Ndava.
Other activists said voters also needed to be educated on the new polling station-based voters’ roll.
“We do not know what the polling station-based voters’ roll means. In previous elections, we have gone to the polling station on polling day and there has always been a voters’ roll.
“If anything is going to be different then ZEC should ensure that the people are educated on the system well ahead of the election so that the people can educate each other,” said another party supporter.
ZEC chairperson, Justice Rita Makarau, recently announced that the voter registration exercise will begin in May and that they will do away with the previous voters’ roll which was prepared by the office of the Registrar General.politics, local

Zinwa fails to provide water to Chivi despite downpours

01 March 2017, CHIVI – Chivi growth point has for the last month experienced acute water shortages that have forced some residents to fetch water in unprotected wells as failures at the Zimbabwe National Water Authority (Zinwa) become more glaring.
Chivi Rural District Council (RDC) Chief Executive Officer, Tariro Matavire, said high water levels in Tokwe River had seen Zinwa failing to get to the intake point.
“The sucker at the intake point has been blocked by mud and the level of water denies Zinwa personnel a chance to clean the intake sucker to enable them to pump water to the growth point,” Matavire said.
Residents who spoke to TellZim News complained that neither Zinwa nor council had given any explanation to them despite the severity of the situation.
“They have not bothered to explain the issue for the past one month. There is a lot of open defecation taking place because people cannot use their toilets anymore,” said one resident.
Other residents also said they were now walking long distances to fetch water in neighbouring village wells.
Stallholders at the market next to the main bus terminus said they are no longer getting enough customers because people do not trust fruits and vegetables during water crisis.
Chivi is a perennially dry area which suffers water shortages but has not reaped the rewards of the current wet season in as far as safe drinking water is concerned.local

Renco Mine – Clemence Mahachi from Chiponda Village in Nyajena last week left community members speechless after he allegedly dragged, tied and laid his aunt, Agnes Mauya, on top of his father’s grave and ordered her to resurrect him.
The matter was reported to Renco Mine police camp but the suspect had not been arrested by the time of writing because he had reportedly fled the area.
As a result of the alleged assault, Mauya sustained an injured arm and a swollen face while her daughter was hit by a machete on the forehead when she tried to intervene on behalf of her mother.
She was taken to Nyajena Hospital for treatment while her daughter, identified as Fortunate, was transferred to Morgenster Hospital.
Witnesses said Mahachi dragged Mauya to his father’s grave where he reportedly assaulted her for ‘bewitching and killing his father’.
Mahachi is also said to have blamed Mauya for his separation from his wife saying the aunt had used witchcraft to create misunderstandings in his family.
Mahachi’s father was reportedly found dead in a football pitch at Muchibwa Primary school last year after a beer drink at Muchibwa Council beer hall.local

ZVISHAVANE – Two small-scale miners have scooped awards at the Inaugural Gold Sector Awards recently held at Rainbow Towers in Harare.
Same Chivere was the first runner-up in the Best Buyer Midlands province category and Best Small Scale Miner in Masvingo province.
Charles Shava came out as first runner-up in the Best Small Scale Miner Midlands province category.

Chairperson for Zvishavane Mberengwa Miners Association, Themba Sibanda said he was very proud of the two miners for putting the district on the map.
“Doors are opening for small scale miners. I want to thank the ministry for recognising small scale miners and the effort for the decriminalisation of gold possession.
“The 28 tone target set by the minister is achievable provided the resources are available,” said Sibanda who also encouraged Chivere and Shava to work extra hard and win more awards.
He thanked Mimosa mines for their efforts to help small scale miners in Zvishavane and Mberengwa.
Speaking at the function, Minister of Mines and Mining Development Walter Chidhakwa applauded the small scale miners for contributing 48 percent of the twenty three tons of gold delivered to Fidelity Printers and Refineries.
“I want to thank you very much, especially the small scale miners for your contribution. Without you we would not have achieved this improvement,” Chidhakwa said.
He echoed Reserve Bank of Zimbabwe (RBZ) John Mangundya’s directive that no one should be arrested for possessing gold as long as they will sell it to Fidelity Printers and Refineries.
“I am happy that the minister of Home Affairs Dr Chombo is here. I kindly ask for the decriminalisation of the possession of gold as long as the person is finding the fastest way to take it to Fidelity. But if the person is found crossing the borders with the precious metal, then the law must take its course,’ said Chidhakwa.business, topnews

Bhasikiti pulls religion card on Omar

Kudakwashe Bhasikiti and Joosbi Omar

…says Islam has no place in Mwenezi

Upenyu Chaota

27 Feb 2017, MASVINGO – Aspiring Mwenezi East legislator, Kudakwashe Bhasikiti recently made a religion jibe against one of his opponents, Zanu PF’s Joosbi Omar, saying his Muslim faith was not welcome in Mwenezi.
Speaking outside the nomination court which sat at Masvingo Magistrates Court last Friday, Bhasikiti said while everyone has freedom of religion, Zimbabwe remains largely Christian and those who differ will find it hard to earn popular appeal.
Omar is a practising Muslim and Bhasikiti’s insinuations were meant to smear him as an outsider ahead of the parliamentary by-election pencilled for April 8.
“My colleague here subscribes to a certain religion which is yet to be established in Mwenezi and people will be scared to follow that religion.
“Mwenezi people are Christians and they subscribe to Christian values so any foreign body will be difficult to sell,” said Bhasikiti.
He also said ZimPF was strong in Mwenezi and will win the by-election with a wide margin.
When asked to respond to the jibe, Omar criticised Bhasikiti for “stooping so low” and “dwelling on such trivialities as one’s religion” instead of talking development.
“Why would anyone stoop so low? Everyone is entitled to their own religion so this will not affect our chances in Mwenezi because the people have already endorsed me in the primaries. The votes I got in the primaries mean the people of Mwenezi are behind the ruling party.
“I have never brought in the issue of religion in my campaign and I cannot change anybody into practising what they don’t want. People know what they want and if they feel that my behaviour merits a win, they will elect me regardless of my religion,” said Omar.
In the Zanu PF primaries held on February 14, Omar polled 5 901 out of 11 986 votes cast. The rest of the votes were shared by the remaining 12 candidates who participated.
Besides Omar and Bhasikiti, the nomination court also approved Welcome Masuku of National Constitutional Assembly (NCA) and Mango Turner of Free Zimbabwe Congress to contest in the by-election.top news

Workers protest ‘inhuman’ conditions at Gaika mine

27 Feb 2017, GWERU – Gaika Gold Fields workers are complaining of what they say are inhuman working conditions characterised by lack of protective clothing, poor sanitation, long working hours and poor remuneration.
The miners say there have been disease outbreaks at mine, which is located along Chiundura road near Kwekwe, with some miners dying as a result.
Workers who spoke to TellZim News said many workers are facing health challenges because they are forced to work with such harmful substances as caustic soda and cyanide with no protective clothing.
“In the past, cyanide contamination led to the death of two miners; Douglas Chowa and Lovemore Nyambara but the mine did not cover for their burial services and has never bothered taking corrective measures ever since,” said a miner who spoke on condition of anonymity.
Other workers also complained that mine management was in constant breach of employment contracts with no medical aid given when workers fall ill.
“Only the clerk is covered by the medical aid and we grapple with high medical bills because our salaries sometimes fall to as little as $250 or less,” said one worker.
Some former employees of the mine have reportedly gone for a long time without being given their benefits and they are not getting their monthly pension payouts.
The workers said they had raised these complaints in one of the meetings with management but nothing was addressed.
Though no comment could be obtained from top management, mine plant operator Mathius Nyakudya said issues of pensions were addressed by the company’s headquarters in Bulawayo and all ex-workers were getting their pensions every month.local
