MASVINGO – Members of the Junior Chamber International (JCI) Zimbabwe last Saturday mobilised each other and donated blood to National Blood Service Zimbabwe (NBSZ) at an event held at OccZim lodge.
JCI is a worldwide community of young active citizens aged between 18 and 40 who are dedicated to the creation of positive change in the communities.
The event saw above 50 members from six chapters participating in the blood donation as part of giving back to the community.
JCI Zimbabwe national president Tinashe Rurevo said it was their objective to serve others and donating blood was one way of doing so.
“We occasionally meet and organise something to do for the community, so after the national convention here in Masvingo, we decided to give back through blood donations. As the youth, what we have is blood and that will go a long way in assisting those in need,” Rurevo said.
NBSZ planning and recruitment officer Michael Chakoma said their campaigns were mainly focused on collecting blood group O which is in short supply. Blood group O is well sought after because it is compatible with people of any other blood group.
He also encouraged the local community to donate blood regularly to save lives especially now as the nation approaches the festive season when many road traffic accidents occur.
“As we go towards festive season, Pledge 25 Club Zimbabwe wants to boost blood bank stocks by embarking on ‘Be The One’ campaign by which we encourage all young people of age 25 and below to come and donate blood,” Chakoma said.
Pastor Luke Nyamukangarira of the Celebration Church International said Christians should encourage each other to give blood as it was a way of helping those in need.local
