Masvingo Pool league (MPL) kicked off in style last weekend with 18 teams battling for honors this season.
It was a thrilling start to the pool league, which started on February 29 and stretched to March 1, 2025.
Speaking to TellZim News, Masvingo District Pool Association Technical Development Officer Phillip Pfundo said the league commenced on a high note and said they decided to name the league after their sponsor Funamel.
“The league commenced well and appreciation goes to our sponsor and to show our appreciation we are naming the 2025 Pool season after the sponsor.
“Masvingo pool league will be called Funamel Pool League, to appreciate the US$3 060 sponsorship we got from Funamel Investments owned by a local businessman and Chairperson of Masvingo District Pool Association Promise Funani. However, we still need more sponsors as weekly tournaments are on throughout the year,” said Pfundo..
18 teams will battle it out for the championship this season namely Bobs, Superstars, Hiri Hiri, Hillthru, Vic Range Snipers, Manhede Bulldogs, Mamula, ZPCS, Spinners, Aminas, Cue Masters, Yeukai, Soweto, ZRP, Great Zimbabwe University (GZU) Missiles, New Horizon and Phoenix ZRP.
Match day 1 was highly competitive, with all the teams from all over the district gathering to showcase their skills in different venues across Masvingo
In the opening matches, Tarven boys (Bob’s) won 11- 5 against Hillthru at Bobs Tavern Bar whilst Hiri Hiri won 6-9 against Spinners.
Phoenix ZRP players were looking strong, but they were no match for Manhede’s powerhouse team, Manhede Bull Dogs, which won the game 11-5.
ZRP dominated their match against Soweto winning 12-4. Aminas won 11-5 against Rujeko Snipers. Cue Masters posted an impressive win of 11-5 against Mamula while Yeukai drew 8-8 with Superstars.
The GZU Missiles match against ZPCS was postponed as GZU players were on semester break and the match will be played on their return.
The match between New Horizon and Vic Range Snipers was also postponed after a miscommunication.
Phoenix ZRP and Spinners joined the league for the season while Bhuka, Eastvale Rangers, and Lion Stars who were part of the league failed to make it this time.
The pool league was off to an exciting start, with plenty of twists and turns expected every week throughout the season.
