Opposition MDC-Alliance Gutu activist Nyasha Zhambe Mawere alleged to have been assaulted by suspected Zanu Pf activists during Nelson Chamisa’s Citizens Convergence for Change tour of Masvingo province has succumbed to the resultant attacks.
The late Mawere is said to have sustained injuries and was admitted at Gutu hospital but was transferred to Harare a few days after.
His death was announced by outspoken MDC-A vice chairperson Job ‘Wiwa’ Sikhala on his Tweeter handle.
“I am receiving sad news that our member Nyasha Zhambe Mawere from Gutu has just passed on.
“He was abducted and severely tortured by Zanu PF thugs when he attended our President @nelsonchamisa’s tour of Gutu.
“He came to my house and I assisted him to be attended. He could not make it,” said Sikhala.
Former MDC-A Member of Parliament (MP) Jefferson Chitando told TellZim News that the late Mawewe was assisted by Gutu United Residents and Ratepayers Association (GURRA) Executive Director Lloyd Mupfudze and Gutu ward 33 Cllr Bernad Chimwango to seek medication.
“The late Mawewe was helped to seek medication by provincial member Lloyd Mapfudze and Cllr Chimwango before he was transferred to Harare where he was assisted by Job Sikhala,” said Chitando.
Mapfudze said he assisted the late Mawewe to file a police report and get medical assistance soon after the incident.
He said Mawewe sustained injuries and never recovered from then.
“I helped the late Mawere to file a police report at Mupandawana base and he was admitted at Gutu hospital before he was transferred to Harare.
“He was hurt since he was severely beaten and he was sick from then,” said Mapfudze.
Mawewe has since been laid to rest at his rural home in Gutu.
Chamisa’s tour was to meet grassroots supporters and community leaders across Masvingo province where he was hearing the citizens’ views and bringing communities together.
In Charumbira communal lands Chamisa’s convoy was attacked by alleged Zanu PF supporters in an attack, the opposition leader labeled ‘an assassination plot that could have claimed lives’.
After leaving Masvingo province Chamisa and his entourage proceeded to Manicaland where they got a hostile reception from alleged ruling party supporters as they claimed the vehicle the leader was travelling in was shot at.
