Chilonga bridge reconstruction set for 2022

Terrence
Ndowora

Minister of Finance and Economic Development
Prof Mthuli Ncube last week delivered ‘sweet’ news for the people of Chilonga
saying the government will embark on the reconstruction of the Chilonga Bridge
in 2022.

The Chilonga Bridge, which connects
Chiredzi South and Chiredzi town, has been impassable during the rainy season
owing to its low lying nature shutting people out from social and economic
services.

Prof Ncube, who more often than not
indicates left while turning right, said that the government was aware of the
plight of the people of Chilonga and plans have already been set in motion to
reconstruct the bridge.

“I visited Chilonga Bridge in Chiredzi
last year, the bridge has to be fixed and the government has a budget to fix it.
The government this year is focusing on
re-designing of the bridge but construction should start next year,” said Prof
Ncube.

Chilonga Bridge has been a cause of concern
for the people in Chiredzi South for a long time with lives being lost as
people tried to cross the flooded bridge during the rainy season.

“I noticed that the Chilonga community
had to detour about 60km just to get across the bridge and some lost their
lives while trying to cross the flooded bridge.

“The government is committed to address
this problem,” said Ncube.
