28 April 2017, GWERU – The newly-elected Gweru mayor, Charles Chikozho last week called for unity in the council as he took time to meet fellow councillors for the first time since taking over from Hamutendi Kombayi.
Speaking to TellZim News after the closed door meeting held at council offices, Chikozho said he gathered the councillors to emphasise the need of working as a team.
“The meeting was a big step forward on how we are going to work as council. I felt it was time I called my councillors to emphasise the issue of unity as I believe team work can bring us good results in rebuilding Gweru’s lost dignity.
“Honestly speaking, this place had fallen into shambles and even respect had become a thing of the past. Imba yacho yanga yangova dongawatonga. I would like to thank the commission for going half way in restoring order and unity in the town house,” Chikozho said.
He also said if unity was attained, all councillors would stand a chance of retaining their posts in 2018.
“Partisan politics must be left at our respective party offices. When we arrive here, I wish to see councillors doing the business of working for residents instead of accelerating political fights as if we come to council to campaign. If everyone supports what I am trying to bring, we all stand a chance to retaining our wards in 2018,” added Chikozho.
Meanwhile, council committees are expected to convene their first full council meeting on March 31 where major decisions on land audits and the complaints of vendors are expected to be made.politics
