Chiredzi – There was drama at Chiredzi magistrate court last Friday when Clemence Mumanyi, a notorious car thief known for the cold-bloodied murder of a member of the Central Intelligence Organisation (CIO) in Chiredzi in 2008 and was given a death penalty by the High Court, attacked Moreblessing Rusere, a regional court prosecutor to avenge his conviction on 13 other cases.
The gallery was left in shock when Mumanyi (32), who is of no fixed abode, jumped out of the accused’s box before he grabbed a chair and threw it at Rusere who managed to duck and scamper for safety.
The court was then adjourned only to reconvene some moments later in the absence of Mumanyi and in accordance with section 194 of the Criminal Law and Codification Act which allows the court to proceed with the accused in absentia if he/she fails to cooperate.
Led by Magistrate Judith Zuyu, the court heard that on July 21, 2008 Mumanyi, in the company of some of his accomplices went to Khumbula Complex in Chiredzi where he used violent threats before stealing a Mercedes Benz with registration number AAJ 0268.
In another count, Mumanyi allegedly went to a Chiredzi rural and town council workshop on October 26, 2008 where he used an AK47 rifle and 9 mm pistol to scare council guards before making away with a Hino truck; registration number 837 28ZN, a motorcycle and a welding machine.
In yet another count, Mumanyi is accused of going to section 7 Chilonga armed with a 9 mm pistol and stole a UD 96 truck with registration number AAH 9917.
Mumanyi also faces a myriad of other charges including smuggling, robbery, possession of dangerous weapons and theft.
The matter was later postponed to a later date since other witnesses failed to attend the court session.news
