UZ shines at ZIMCODD tertiary institutions debate

By Beverly Bizeki

University of Zimbabwe (UZ) stole the limelight at the Zimbabwe Coalition on Debt and Development (ZIMCODD) Tertiary Institutions Debate 2024 competitions held at Bethany House in Masvingo after bagging four awards from the 20 teams that competed from May 21 to May 22, 2024.
UZ was awarded the best institution and two of its participants Banele Ntuta and Nicole Mushore were awarded best female and best speaker in the competition respectively.
Africa University was second placed with 12 points, followed by National University of Science and Technology (NUST) with 10 points, followed by Bindura University of Science Education (BUSE) with nine points.
On fifth position was another team from UZ with nine points, followed by Harare Polytechnic after which came Midlands State University with Chinhoyi University of Technology placed in the eighth position.
Speaking at the awards ceremony ZIMCODD Senior Programmes officer Lead Tashinga Zamba said the debates were part of a project called Strengthening Institutions and Youth Agencies (SIYA) in Zimbabwe’s Accountability Narrative and said they were targeting youths in tertiary institutions to get an appreciation of the dynamics around and how to fight corruption.
The debates were aimed at giving youths a platform to air their views on corruption and their strategies for building integrity.
“As youths, we are not going to relax and see our country being attacked or continuously beheaded by the animal called corruption. The youths must become champions and integrity icons that are going to drive the process of dealing with corruption. The centrality of young people taking advantage of the demographics in our country is important because we want to create a movement of young people who would say no to corruption.
“This country is ranked very low in terms of corruption index so by this project we intend to achieve a generation of young people that would say we want to stop corrupt practices and live an honest life as well as be hard workers. We want to start by building integrity and instilling a culture of principles that lead us not to engage in corrupt practices,” said Zamba.
Mushore said the engagement was eye-opening to the youths on issues of governance and thanked the organizers for a learning opportunity.
“We are grateful for competitions because they help us get a better understanding of governance and how young people can take an active role in participating in governance issues and how we can start to feel like our voices matter and are being heard.
“It was a tough competition but we are grateful that we did well and our institution came out first. We are looking forward to more learning opportunities. We are no longer going to be shy to speak up in public spaces and allow ourselves to be heard because now we have realized that our voices matter,” said Mushore.
The eight teams will participate in the semifinals to be held on a date to be announced while the finalists are expected to compete at the SADC Summit Forum.
The project has two targets: dealing with corruption issues at the subnational level and building a movement of young people who are eager to challenge corrupt practices.

Whose vision is Vision 2030?

Ladies and gentlemen, winter is upon us, let’s try to keep warm everywhere kwatiri. Let’s keep safe and avoid taking drugs that our dear Ministers are taking. Muri kushamisika, our Ministers are the worst drug abusers and dai ndirini mukuru weMapurisa I would deploy sniffer dogs at every cabinet meeting coz ndokwadziri kurohwa ikoko. I used to think dzinorohwa kuFinance kune Boys Dzesmoko led by Mutuvi wekwaNcube but I never imagined kuti nekuAgric vari kurima vachisvuta vega. Our Minister of Agric is a user zvekutodaro. I used to regard Jongwe Masuka as one of the best and when he won the Best Minister award I said yes. That is one of the very few instances I agreed with Trabablas but I recently discovered I was wrong. I think he is responsible of getting best grades of Mbanje that was legalized gore riya and taking to cabinet. Murume Mukuru kusatonyara kutaura in front of camera hanzi Zimbabwe is one of the areas kunorimwa fodya yemandiriri yekuti kana aisvuta gotsi rinoti papata nekunakirwa. What’s that nhaiwe Jongwe? What are you telling these youngsters? Hee? Nxaaa! Are you encouraging youngsters kuti vasvute? Mukati hadzisiridzo dzakarohwa naMasuka here gotsi rikati papata nekunakirwa. I think vari kurima should be giving him some form of chegumi and he abuses it ini. Haa the guys smoked it gotsi rakati papata vakati lets back our currency nayo. I used to think these guys were serious with introducing new currency but it has dawned on me that the currency was simply introduced for people to get change. Haisi kuoneka kana mari yacho. Where is the currency nhai Mushayamazano. Heee?
I always hear Vision 2030, Vision 2030, are there any strides being made towards achieving it? Maybe I have asked the wrong question. Whose vision is it anyway? Do we really expect to have a middle income economy by 2030 or tikutovharwa zvedu. I think Vision 2030 means something else not zvemiddle income izvi, it’s all banter. Tenax FC dedicates Surrey match to late defender

By Tiyani Hahlani

Tenax FC is set to dedicate their upcoming match against Surrey FC to the late defender Justin Gadzani who died on Saturday, May 18 after a short illness.
Gadzani died at Victoria Chitepo Hospital after undergoing an appendix operation and was buried at Glenforest Cemetery in Harare.
The late Gadzani, who also played for Midlands State University FC and later joined Zimbabwe Prisons and Correctional Services teams, starting with WhaWha where he made a name under Luke Petros survived by his wife and one child.
He commanded a first team position when WhaWha was merged with Tenax last season, forming a team that lost the promotion ticket albeit via a boardroom decision where Bikita Minerals were eventually promoted.
Speaking to TellZim News, team chairperson Stefani Masina expressed deep sorrow as Tenax family lost one of their foot soldiers on and off pitch who led the team towards promotion though the dream was not realized eventually.
“As Tenax FC we are saddened to have been robbed of our foot soldier, a rocky-steady individual who had a great passion in football, also a humble and respectable player on and off pitch. We are dedicating our next match against Surrey to him
“He was also part of the great team that was almost promoted to play in the Castle Lager Premier League before being robbed in the boardroom coup that made Bikita Minerals FC to be promoted in the league,” says Masina.
One of his teammates Carlos Muza described who Gadzani was to the team and the challenges they faced when he was not feeling well.
“The death of Gadzani came to us as we were not expecting it. He was a very passionate player who prioritized football first before anything else and he was the team’s penalty star.
“Gadzani was the same on and off the pitch as he was a happy man. We are saddened to lose such a player in our camp,” said Muza.

No farmer should be disconnected from water supply -Min

By Bright Zhou

Minister of State for Masvingo Provincial Affairs and Devolution Ezra Chadzamira has called upon Zimbabwe National Water Authority (ZINWA) to not disconnect water for irrigation schemes over debts saying that would affect food security.
Speaking at a provincial wheat seminar where farmers and Ministry of Agriculture officials exchanged knowledge and skills on wheat production hosted at Mushandike Agritex Office on May 16, 2024, Chadzamira said ZINWA must work hand in hand with farmers to ensure food security towards achieving Vision 2030.
Chadzamira was responding to an issue raised by Nyahombe Irrigation Scheme of Ward 27, Chivi District Chairperson Simbarashe Mugabe who said the scheme had 80 hectares and were using water from Tugwi Mukosi dam for irrigation but were however facing challenges with ZINWA disconnecting water for farmers with debts.
“We have 80 hectares placed under wheat production but the crops are wilting because ZINWA has disconnected water because we owe the authority. This is problematic for us because the scheme does not have enough money to pay water bills to irrigate our wheat yet the crops are wilting,” said Mugabe.
In his response Chadzamira said farmers should have access to water despite other challenges as the country was targeting high yields from the winter crop.
“Wheat production is being done to ensure food security in the country towards the attainment of vision 2030. It is a bad thing for the authorities to disconnect water from irrigation schemes while crops are wilting.
“ZINWA should not deny farmers access to water for use at the irrigation schemes as this can disturb wheat production. We urge ZINWA to work together with schemes towards this goal,” said Chadzamira.
Chadzamira said government on the other hand was constructing roads as part of its efforts to assist farmers in transporting grains after harvesting.
“The government is constructing roads and this is benefitting farmers in transporting their grains to Grain Marketing Board and other markets,” said Chadzamira.
Deputy Minister of Lands, Agriculture, Fisheries, Water and Rural Development Peter Haritatos said they were expecting a high yield in Masvingo province with 5 000 hectares placed under wheat production.
“We have 5000 hectares placed under wheat production in Masvingo and we expect farmers to cultivate wheat on a high scale. We need to be the best in wheat production as a country,” said Haritatos.
Haritatos urged farmers in regions 4 and 5 to cultivate small grains and to use block system to prevent spreading of crop diseases which reduce yield.
“We urge farmers to grow wheat crop using a block system that is growing of one type crop on a piece of land and avoid mixed farming which can cause spreading of diseases and competition for sunlight and nutrients on crops. Farmers in region 4 and 5 should cultivate small grains.
“We want farmers to take farming as a business and we want irrigation schemes to create sustainable hubs for rural communities. The government has promised to continue strengthening rural communities resilience and adaptation in the face of climate change through the establishment of irrigation schemes,” said Haritatos.
Agritex Acting Chief Director Leonard Munamati said farmers should take small grains farming seriously as these can be used for various purposes.
“Small grains can be used for different purposes for instance the main purpose is for sadza, beer brewing and bread, farmers can sell their grains to GMB or exchange with other grains like maize
“We urge farmers to take wheat production seriously as it can be a major source of starch and energy, it provides substantial amounts of a number of components essential for health notably in protein and vitamins,” said Munamati.

Debtors owe Chiredzi RDC US$2 million

By Beatific Gumbwanda

CHIREDZI-Chiredzi Rural District Council (CRDC) is currently being bled by its debtors owing the local authority an approximate of US$2 million on housing schemes, safari operators with A2 farmers topping the list with an estimated debt of US$1 million on development levies.
CRDC recently held its first quarter council meeting where Chief Executive Officer, Ailes Baloyi highlighted that the council was owed close to US$2 million by various stakeholders including farmers, safari operators and housing conglomerates.
Speaking during the meeting at the council boardroom, Baloyi said A2 farmers owe the local authority close to US$1 million in land development levy while housing schemes and safari operators share the other million.
“A2 farmers owe council some US$1 million while safari operators owe council a total of US$314 175-10. Some of these debts date back to 2019 and 2022 respectively,” said Baloyi.
The finance committee highlighted that SSG Safaris’ total debt was US$228 087.90, Yatani Safaris with US$72 128.70 and Liloma with US$13 956.50.
Baloyi said stand owners formed the other group of debtors, which the finance committee urged the council to repossess stands for Buffalo Range Housing Project was owing the local authority close to a million dollars.
“Another group of debtors consist of stand owners. A number of Buffalo Range Housing Scheme beneficiaries owe council, since 2016, US$700 995.00 despite the window period having expired in 2019.
Baloyi further said the council was moving towards zero tolerance on corruption which they had advanced through setting up an integrity committee as well as council hotline.
“In its effort to promote integrity and fight corruption, council managed to set up an integrity committee. Management calls on all council employees and councilors to shun corruption and promote transparency at all times.
“For residents’ convenience, council operates a hotline. Please report any corrupt activities you come across by any members of council and staff. Residents can use the hotline to raise complaints with council. The hotline number is 0782287879,” said Baloyi.

Zanu PF deploys party chairpersons for ZiG campaigns

…says ZiG is Zanu PF product not government

By Brighton Chiseva

MASVINGO – Zanu PF Masvingo Provincial Coordinating Committee (PCC) recently deployed its chairpersons at various levels from the cell level to go and hold weekly meetings with people and explain to them about the new currency, the Zimbabwe Gold (ZiG).
Ruling party Provincial Chairperson Senator Robson Mavhenyengwa gave the order at a Zanu PF PCC meeting held at Masvingo Poly last weekend where he said the introduction of ZiG was not government’s idea but Zanu PF which he said was bigger than the government.
Mavhenyengwa said since it was the party’s brainchild, they had to make sure the idea prevailed hence the need to go and preach to people about the new currency so they accept it.
“Elections came, are done and dusted, and now it’s time to support the President as well as his government. We must support our government. Here we have been told about ZiG which was introduced by the President and the government so let’s go and preach ZiG.
“ZiG does not belong to President Mnangagwa but Zanu PF, which is led by him, so it is Zanu PF led by President Mnangagwa that brought ZiG. You are Zanu PF members so you are part of ZiG. All party chairpersons at all levels should convene meetings with the people every week to discuss ZiG.
“All the meetings should be recorded and the reports should be compiled and sent to the District Coordinating Committee Chairpersons (DCCs) who will then send them to PCC,” said Mavhenyengwa.
Mavhenyengwa went on to read the riot act on insubordinate party members whom he accused of fanning factionalism and creating parallel structures saying it was not time for people to jostle for party positions as there are no vacancies.
“There is no restructuring for now, I hear there are some people who now have their own chairpersons and other positions whilst the elected ones are still there. Wait, the time shall come and everyone will be given an opportunity. If you are not careful beware you will not contest when the time comes.
“I also heard there are some MPs who are doing the restructuring. We have a challenge with the MPs who want to control the structures, they are not yours but the party’s, so beware. Restructuring is done by the commissariat not MPs,” said Mavhenyengwa.
He also mocked party chairpersons whom he said were not even aware of their duties and responsibilities and ordered them to make sure they carry the party’s constitution when they go to party meetings and make sure they are well conversant with it.
Speaking at the same meeting, Masvingo Minister of State for Provincial Affairs and Former Zanu PF Chairperson Ezra Chadzamira said Zanu PF formed the party so if the government fails its Zanu PF that would have failed.
“Your party Zanu PF is the one in government, so we have to support the government because if it fails, it’s Zanu PF that would have failed. That is why you see me working together with the chairperson (Mavhenyengwa). Even when the President comes, he recognizes two people, one from the party and one from government,” said Chadzamira.

Silobela man left for dead over snooker tokens

A 24-year-old man from Silobela was left battling for his life at Silobela District Hospital after he was allegedly attacked by two men from the same village over snooker tokens at Zvibomvu Business Centre in Silobela on May 9, 2024.
Midlands Provincial Police Spokesperson, Inspector Emmanuel Mahoko confirmed the incident and urged members of the public to settle disputes amicably.
“We confirm a case of attempted murder in which a Silobela man was brutally attacked after a game of snooker and was left with life-threatening injuries. We have arrested one man and launched a manhunt for the other one. We urge members of the public to use dialogue in solving disputes and refrain from violence,” Mahoko said.
Circumstances are that the complainant Zenzo Moyo of Mathe Shop, Zvibomvu Business Centre in Silobela was playing snooker inside Svingo Bar at the same business centre with the two suspects, Moses Mlauzi, (27) of Village Gwetu, Chief Malisa, Silobela and Mthandazo Chaka.
A misunderstanding arose amongst them over snooker tokens and the suspects left Moyo in the bar and went away.
Moyo later left the bar for his shop when he met the suspects who ambushed him. It is alleged that Chaka was armed with an axe and Mlauzi with a knife and extensively attacked the former all over his body.
The two continued to attack Moyo while he was on the ground until he fell unconscious. After the attack, the duo fled the scene leaving Moyo lying in a pool of blood on the ground.
The matter was reported to police and Mlauzi was arrested.
The complainant sustained life-threatening injuries and was admitted to Silobela District Hospital. Chaka is still at large and the police have since launched a manhunt for him.

ZINWA abandons fixing Chivi water pipes

By Decide Nhendo

Zimbabwe National Water Authority (ZINWA) is alleged to have abandoned the repair and placement of pipes supplying water to some parts of Chivi Central, Ward 20 which has seen some residents in the ward going for about four years without piped water.
Chivi Central Ward 20 councilor Alec Nhundu said the pipes were damaged by Exodus and Company in 2020 when they were rehabilitating roads in the area and the company supplied new pipes to replace the damaged ones, but it seems ZINWA was dragging its feet in replacing the pipes.
“We have a water crisis in our area caused by damage of pipes which occurred when Exodus was rehabilitating roads in the area.
“The company made efforts to replace damaged pipes and bought new ones and ZINWA is now delaying to fix the pipes giving excuses, some other time they said they had no generator.
He said the pipes were the ward’s main source of safe water to the community with villagers resorting to boreholes and open sources for domestic uses and subjected to traveling long distances.
“We are experiencing a serious water crisis in the ward because the pipes to our main source of safe water are yet to be replaced. People are now using water from boreholes and open sources which put their lives at risk.
“Residents have to travel long distances to fetch water from rivers and boreholes where they crowd for the precious liquid,” said Nhundu.
The water was being taken from Tugwi Mukosi and Manyare dam. The piped scheme supplied water to Sese Business Centre, schools including Danhamombe High, St Simon, and Jaka.
It also served villages like Zhara, Mudziwedare, Mupepeti, Charumengwe, Mashamhanda, and Tavagadza.
No comment could be obtained from ZINWA information officer Obert Muchena whose phone went unanswered several times.

21 Masvingo farmers benefit from Presidential heifer programme

By Bright Zhou

A total of 21 farmers from Masvingo District recently benefitted from the Presidential Heifer programme which is aimed at boasting the national herd following the ravage by January Disease which saw some farmers being left without a single beast.
Minister of State for Masvingo Provincial Affairs and Devolution Ezra Chadzamira handed over the 21 heifers to farmers at Masvingo Showgrounds on May 14, 2024.
Chadzamira said government was giving one heifer to each farmer amongst those who lost cattle to January Disease across the country under the President’s Rural Development 8.0 programme, to rear for meat, milk and draught power.
“Most farmers in the country lost cattle because of January Disease and the President has come up with the Rural Development 8.0 programme whereby every farmer who lost livestock to the disease will receive a heifer to rear for meat, milk and for agricultural purposes,” said Chadzamira.
He said the government was rolling the programme according to districts starting with the most affected and said in Chivi, Bikita and Gutu farmers had since received heifers, tick grease and chemicals and encouraged farmers to dip livestock.
“Government has started with districts that were mostly affected with January Disease and farmers in Chivi, Bikita and Gutu districts have already received heifers and tick grease. We encourage them to dip livestock to control the diseases,” said Chadzamira.
He said farmers were supposed to take good care of the heifers they received from government as they were good breeds and promised that the remaining districts will receive their shares in the coming months.
“We encourage farmers to take good care of the heifers they have received, those who did not receive should not worry because the turn is coming as this is being done monthly,” said Chadzamira.
Animal Health Inspector Veterinary Services Pheobie Chidziya said farmers who received heifers should buy tickets at Veterinary Offices for the department for records of beneficiaries in every village.
“Government will help farmers to fight diseases like Foot and Mouth, January Disease and Black Skin, farmers should work in hand with veterinary officers to vaccinate and dose livestock on their own,” said Chidziya.
Masvingo Provincial Agritex Director Caleb Mahoya urged farmers to have two kraals during the rainy season so that they will be able to shift and rotate the livestock if one gets muddy which affects livestock.
He said farmers should dehorn the heifers to avoid injuries to other livestock when fighting and should be earmarked for easy identification.
“Farmers must have two kraals for shifting during the rainy season because the mud causes diseases, dehorning is important to avoid injuries to other livestock and earmarking is essential for easy identification when lost,” said Mahoya.

Man brutalizes neighbor for proposing love to wife

A Masvingo man from Matanda village, Chief Murinye area was arraigned before a Masvingo Magistrate for assaulting his neighbor whom he accused of proposing love to his wife.
He appeared before Magistrate Elizabeth Hanzie on May 17 facing aggravated assault charges after he allegedly bashed his neighbor with a metal rod after tying him with a rope.
The accused was remanded out of custody waiting for continuation of trial on Monday, May 20, 2024.
The state heard that on May 2, 2024, Isaac Mugazambi’s wife met the complainant Llyod Madanhire (21) on her way to the garden and proposed love to her, which she turned down and rushed back home where she told her husband what had transpired.
Mugazambi went to Madanhire’s homestead and confronted him before they had a heated argument with the complainant proposing love to Mugazambi’s wife.
The two started fighting and Mugazambi tied Madanhire with a rope and assaulted him with a metal rod all over his body several times and he sustained injuries.
The court heard how the incident happened without anyone else to immediately intervene. The accused is said to have proceeded to assault the complainant with clenched fists and booted feet all over the body.
A neighbor who heard the commotion rushed to the scene and restrained Mugazambi from further assaulting Madanhire who was now bleeding, and helped untie the complainant.
The following day Madanhire reported the matter to police and Mugazambi was arrested.
