Low women participation in pool tournaments

0

By Beverly Bizeki

Masvingo Pool Association (MAPA) has bemoaned women’s low participation in pool tournaments in the province after only eight women participated in the just ended provincial tournament held at Mospor Sports Bar and Ghetto Oasis Sports Bar in Chiredzi.
Although participation in the game is improving across the country, women’s participation has remained low despite various interventions by organizers.
MAPA Marketing Officer Tawanda Chemutsanga said there was need to debunk the idea of pool being a sport for drinkers and reintroduce the game in more accessible places other than beer halls.
“Women’s participation in pool tournaments has remained relatively low in our tournaments. Pool is regarded as a sport for drinkers and most women do not enter into bottle stores or beer halls. There is need to introduce the sport in community halls, open space and other places accessible to everyone.
“The other challenge could be the low prize money associated with the women’s category and very few have passion for the sport although we are trying to push for more women to participate,” said Chemutsanga.
The event, which was the first to be held outside Masvingo District since inception, attracted poolers from various areas across the Lowveld region an indicating growth in the sport.
“This was the first time in the history of pool in the province for MAPA to host a monthly tournament outside Masvingo District which shows that the sport is growing across Zimbabwe. The tournament was a good experience to poolers in Chiredzi and Lowveld areas which includes Checheche, Mkwasine, Renco Mine, Triangle and Chikombedzi drawing altogether 57 poolers for the tournament.
From the women’s side, Lucy Runesu from Triangle Pool Club well known for her sharp gaze and precise shots saw her battling for the top post with Sharon Mutsetse, known as Shez with Runesu winning the tournament with a 5 vs 2.
On the man’s side Walter Mbiza, known as Wale from Rutenga Pool Club won the first position and walked away with US$190 followed by Kudakwashe Matembwa with US$140, Nobert Chigandura with US$70 and Pedzisai Mayana with US$30.
The tournament was held under the theme, ‘None but Ourselves Can Uplift Our Community. We Will Do It through Inclusive Sport, Education and Togetherness Led by Ubuntu’ and organizers of the event were hoping to create employment to youths in the region as well as form women and youth leagues in the communities.
Chemutsanga however said hooliganism and bullying were still major issues which need to be addressed at the tournaments.

ZESA replaces Sese transformer after four months

By Decide Nhendo

There is a sigh of relief for the Sese Growth Point business community and homesteads in the vicinity of Chivi Central Ward 20 as the Zimbabwe Electricity Supply Authority (ZESA) finally replaced a transformer they had taken for repairs after it had fallen.
Speaking to TellZim News, Chivi Central Ward 20 councilor and businessman Alec Nhundu thanked ZESA for finally heeding their cries saying the local business people and community depended on electricity for various purposes.
“I am happy because Zesa managed to service the transformer and replaced it after four months leaving many businesses and households in the dark.
“The transformer serves Sese Growth Point and over 100 households so it’s good news for the local business people since bars and butcheries depend on electricity,” said Nhundu.
Nhundu said he had been putting effort daily to contact the provincial offices who only gave him excuses and even went further to contact the Ministers’ office as well as the Harare offices.
“From January 17 to April 20 I had been contacting Zesa office in Masvingo and the Minister of State’s office but we only got excuses from ZESA until now when they replaced the transformer,” said Nhundu.
Another Sese business person, Julieth Zihove said she was happy with the development and said business was back to normal since they could now sell cold beer and drinks to customers.
She appealed to ZESA saying since they have been affected by the fault, it could be to their advantage to their businesses if ZESA could spare them sometime when there is load shedding in other areas so they will be able to boost their businesses.
“I am happy with the replacement of the transformer, our businesses are back to life and we can meet our customers’ needs. We however appeal to ZESA to spare us on load shedding to compensate for the time we were in the dark,” said Zihove.
Another business person Jonas Nhengu who is into welding weighed in and said replacement of the transformer had boosted his business as using generator power was costly and not sustainable.
“The replacement of the transformer by ZESA is an advantage to us because we have businesses like welding which requires much power, and using generators as backup was costly but we are back to our normal operations,” said Nhengu.

Bikita Minerals FC to adopt young talent from local schools

By Decide Nhendo

Premier Soccer League side Bikita Minerals Football Club intends to adopt schools in Masvingo province as they seek to build a firm foundation for future success using local talent.
Speaking to TellZim News, Bikita Minerals FC vice president Pardon Chimombe said they were moved by the backing they got from the community and in return were going to work with local schools in the province as their feeder teams to extract local talent.
“As Bikita Minerals we owe our success to the support we got from our community. The community is our mainstay and we are going to create a platform for children to play for Bikita Minerals,” said Chimombe.
Chimombe said they were going to work with local schools in Bikita like Pamushana High and others as a way to involve the community in building Bikita Minerals into a bigger brand in local football.
He said they had a number of tasks they were going to partake in to make sure that Bikita Minerals evolves to be the focal centre of football development in Masvingo province.
“We are looking at renovating the Lithium stadium in Bikita so that our fans are not deprived of the opportunity to watch their team play home matches as well as business opportunities. Soon the club will unveil the new playing kits and replicas to be put on sale as part of brand-building initiatives,” said Chimombe.
Chimombe said Bikita Minerals performed fairly well in the opening matches of the season, and their target for the next match with TelOne at Sakubva stadium was a win to maintain a place in PSL.
“Bikita has performed well in the opening nine matches, and the target for our next match is a win as we are fighting to stay in the league. The coach believes that if they manage to get 20-25 points by mid-season the team is going to survive well in the league.
“Our fans are rallying behind us as they follow everywhere we play and their support is important to the team as it boost team morale and confidence in players,” said Chimombe.
The promotion of Bikita Minerals Football Club into the Premier Soccer League (PSL) has not brought enough joy to fans and the business community who had prospects of watching PSL closer to home.
The business community was hoping to make money during matches with the hospitality industry anticipating to get full bookings on the Lithium Boys’, as Bikita Minerals is affectionately known, home matches.
These hopes are still pipeline dreams as most stadia in the country including Bikita Minerals are not up to standard to host PSL matches, a development which will see the Lithium Boys using Sakubva Stadium in Mutare as their home ground.
Apart from local people being denied business opportunities when teams are supposed to host matches at their respective stadiums, they also miss a chance to watch professional soccer live with aspiring young talents failing to learn and be familiarized with professional soccer firsthand.

Man rapes mentally challenged neighbor after promising her food

A Masvingo man who resides in Rujeko B, is alleged to have promised food to a 20-year-old mentally challenged woman who lives next door to lure her to his house before raping her.
The accused appeared before Masvingo regional magistrate Bishard Chineka on April 29, 2024 facing rape charges and was remanded in custody for continuation of trial on May 13, 2024.
The state heard that on April 26, 2024 the accused person (name withheld for ethical reasons) was on his way home from Rujeko B shops when he met the 20-year-old complainant who happens to be his neighbor together with her younger sister who asked him for money to buy snacks.
The accused told the victim that he had no money with him but had some at home after which the complainant agreed to go with him to his place where they found no one at home.
The accused gave the complainant’s young sister money for snacks and told her to buy at Rujeko B shops while her sister remained behind with him. He allegedly assured his victim that he was going to provide her with everything she wanted including money and food.
Afterwards, he told her to get inside the house and asked if she was hungry and the complainant requested for drinking water. The accused then told her to sit in the dining room and watch television.
He then went into his bedroom and reportedly returned to the dining room naked, suddenly grabbed the complainant, closed her mouth with his hands and forcibly removed her clothes after which he dragged her into the bedroom.
He proceeded to rape the complainant, threatening to kill her if she disclosed the matter to anyone before ordering her to leave his house.
Before the complainant came out of the house, her younger sister came back found her naked and crying, after which she explained her ordeal to her and the accused person threatened to beat both of them if they remained at his house.
The girls’ father heard the noise and peeped through the perimeter wall where he saw his daughter naked. He asked her why she was naked and she failed to answer until her younger sister told him that she had been raped.
The accused denied that he had raped her and told the father that he just gave her water to drink and money to buy snacks.
The complainant was taken to hospital where the tests revealed that she had been raped. The father then reported the incident to the police after which accused was arrested.

PWDs call for inclusivity in Disability Bill deliberations

By Decide Nhendo

Persons with disabilities (PWDs) in Masvingo have called on government to include them in all developmental projects, policy making and other important national issues.
This emerged from a Disability Bill meeting that was held at Charles Austin Theatre by two Members of Parliament (MPs) representing PWDs, Senators Anna Shiri and Ishmael Zhou, who were raising awareness on the Bill.
Speaking at the meeting, National Council of Disabled Persons of Zimbabwe chairperson Tavengwa Mazhambe said the bill should include PWDs in all social welfare and government grants despite their location as there were some instances where PWDs in urban areas where being excluded.
“The bill must give merit to all PWDs so that they can get access to social welfare and government grants regardless of where one lives especially in disasters like this El Nino induced droughts, because I heard that social welfare was only targeting PWDs in rural areas, excluding those living in urban areas,” said Mazhambe.
Disability Amalgamation Community Trust Executive Director Henry Chivhanga said the disability bill must give capacitation to PWDs so that they can be able to work for their own progress and development.
He said commissioners who were to represent PWDs should not be selected within groups, associations, or political parties as those affiliated to specific political parties can sideline others.
“This bill must give PWDs power to make their own projects for better living conditions.
“Commissioners who are going to represent PWDs must not be taken from certain political parties, associations or groups, but they are supposed to be individuals driven by zeal to stand for all PWDs,” said Chivhanga.
One attendee Godfrey Mutimba said there was need for PWDs representatives in quotas like youth and women since PWDs were more vulnerable compared to the other groups who have been lately represented.
Mutimba said there was supposed to be a representative in parliament where laws are enacted to make sure that issues PWDs face are put into consideration.
“The disability bill must include issues like a quota system because we only have youth and women quotas of which all these groups are not vulnerable like PWDs, hence there is need for representation of the PWDs just like the other groups deemed to be defenseless.
“For our issues to be prioritized, there is need for PWDs representatives in national assembly since the house is where all laws and policies are made, having representatives there will be an advantage to us because they will come up with bills and policies to us,” said Mutimba.
Mutimba also added that when the bill is to be presented to PWDs in May, it was supposed to be translated into all indigenous languages so that everyone, including those who do not understand English will not be vexed by complexity of its legal contents.
Senator Anna Shiri said they had been engaging PWDs and stakeholders across the nation for deliberations on the Disability Bill, and she added there was need for more representatives as they were only two in the whole country.
She said PWDs should stand for themselves and come up with ideas through debates especially when national issues were being discussed and presented so that they will be included in policy making, developmental projects and other important national events.
“We have been meeting with PWDs and other stakeholders from around the country, it is clear that we need more representatives to stand for PWDs as currently we are only two people.
“PWDs must stand for themselves and this meeting presents a platform for you to come up with ideas so you can be included in national policy making as well as important national events which include developmental projects,” said Shiri.

Presidential pardon beneficiaries kill father, injured in mob attack

By Tinaani Nyabereka

Two unrepentant brothers from Gokwe who fatally assaulted their father on April 23, 2024, for reporting them to the police escaped death by a whisker after they were also brutally attacked by a mob over past disputes.
Midlands Provincial Police Spokesperson, Inspector Emmanuel Mahoko confirmed the case and said suspects were in police custody at Gokwe South Hospital while police have launched the manhunt for the 10 member gang that meted instant justice on the two brothers.
“We are appealing for information that may assist in the arrest of the 10 member group which attacked the two brothers and we further appeal to members of the public to respect the sanctity of human life by not engaging in violence as a way of solving disputes,” said Mahoko.
Circumstances are that the two suspects, Evans Mupamhanga (25) and Elvis Mupamhanga (21) both of farm 21, Chemagora area Gokwe South were recently released from Gokwe prison under the Presidential amnesty where they had been imprisoned for possessing an illegal firearm.
On the fateful day, the suspects were at home together with their parents Kennedy Mupamhanga and Monica Mupamhanga when they had a misunderstanding over an issue involving not filling up the jojo tank at their home with water.
The two brothers left their parents’ house after the altercation and proceeded to their father’s young brother, Forever Sikochi’s homestead of the same farm and quizzed him on why he had not filled up the tank. A misunderstanding ensued over the issue and the suspects force-marched Sikochi towards Kwekwe- Gokwe road threatening to kill him.
While on their way, the trio met Kennedy following them and suddenly held the latter whom they informed that they wanted to settle the issue of a firearm which he had previously reported to the police against them. The duo then escorted both Kennedy and Sikochi back to the latter’s homestead.
At around 1900 hours, Evans instructed Elvis to bring an axe so that they could torture their father over the firearm issue. On hearing this, Sikochi fled the scene leaving behind his brother Kennedy in the hands of his two sons. The suspects took turns to strike their father using an axe and stones several times on the head until he died.
After the heinous act, the suspects teamed up and went to their uncle, Job Mupamhanga’s (76) home to inform him of the murder they had committed. As they were explaining to Job what they had done to their father, a gang of about 10 unknown people entered into the house armed with axes, machetes and knobkerries.
They went on to attack the two brothers over a previous dispute, striking them all over their bodies until they became unconscious after which they vanished to an unknown destination. Sikochi later on returned with the police and found his brother already dead. After a few minutes he received a call from his father, Job informing him of what had transpired at his homestead.
The police reacted swiftly and found both Evans and Elvis badly injured. The two were rushed to Gokwe South District Hospital where they are in police custody and are both in serious conditions. The deceased’s body was taken to the same hospital.

Land scandal: Chiredzi RDC dramatically drags Town Council in mud

…Former resolves to exonerate self from FLOAAI’s land development deal

By Beatific Gumbwanda

CHIREDZI-In a sudden twist of events, Chiredzi Rural District Council (CRDC) recently dropped a bombshell by dumping its partner, Chiredzi Town Council (CTC) in Madanyaya’s Full Life Open Arms Africa Investment (FLOAAI) land chaos on the remainder of 750 hectare Joint venture housing project. Chiredzi RDC cited some irregularities and breach of contract by the developer which the later seems to be okaying.
FLOAAI did a feasibility study for the 750 hectares on the remainder of Buffalo Range meant for urban expansion and was mandated to develop 350ha phase 1 and hand it over to Chiredzi Town and Rural District Councils, who are currently on a joint venture on the piece of land.
FLOAAI Director, Pastor Godfrey Nelson Madanyaya had allegedly seized the project and had been selling stands to desperate home seekers in Chiredzi. He is said to have threatened the councils by name dropping President Emmerson Mnangagwa’s name as well as Minister July Moyo to be the owners of the project, while allegedly defrauding people.
Madanyaya, whose list accrued to more than 1000 people including the Zimbabwe Teachers Association (ZIMTA) affiliates, had been selling stands at the cost of US$20.61 per square meter, with one supposed to make a deposit of US$1500 and pay the remaining balance in instalments over a period of four years. A non-refundable fee of US$50 was required in order to open a file with FLOAAI.
FLOAAI even went on to physically show ZIMTA affiliates their stands, which they had been directly contributing to through the Salary Services Bureau (SSB) but were never given offer letters to indicate ownership of the stands.
Chiredzi Town Council (CTC) and Chiredzi Rural District Council (CRDC) through the Joint Venture Committee, reached a stalemate as the latter argued that they should terminate Madanyaya’s contract over several breaches while the former was in tandem with FLOAAI’s developments which led the latter to make a resolution to part ways with the developer and to share land, the remainder of 750ha of Buffalo range Housing Project equally.
Giving a presentation during a full council meeting recently, Alderman Mashulani, who is the Chairperson of the Roads and Planning Committee outlined that the committee had resolved to terminate contract with FLOAAI as well as Town council, and stand alone on developing the remainder of 750 ha of Buffalo Range Housing project.
“That Council terminates the contract with FLOAAI on the developments of the remainder of 750ha of Buffalo Range Housing project. That Chiredzi RDC and Town Council proceed with developments of the remainder of 750ha Buffalo Range Housing project separately. That Chiredzi RDC and Chiredzi Town Council proceed in developing the remainder of the 750ha Buffalo Range Housing Project on its own or to engage a new developer,” read Mashulani.
Efforts to get a comment from Madanyaya were futile as he was not answering his cell by time of getting to print.
The land in question was jointly awarded to Chiredzi Town Council and Chiredzi Rural District Council for the development of 750ha of Buffalo Range Housing Project. FLOAAI was engaged to develop this land; works including roads, water reticulation, sewer and registration of layout plans.
FLOAAI then managed to produce the Environmental Impact Assessment (EIA), and were supposed to be giving reports every time to the joint venture committees which it failed. They also went on to borrow a loan from the bank and the councils were not aware of the amount borrowed from the bank.
The two councils are parting ways towards the development of the remainder of 750 ha Buffalo Range Housing project as Chiredzi Town Council is being blamed for delaying progress as they wanted to continue working with FLOAAI as their developer and they were not committed whenever a meeting was arranged as a joint committee.

Zanu PF youth leader press counter charge of attempted murder to former Mayor Maboke

…Mandebvu files attempted murder charges against Maboke

By Courage Dutiro

In a dramatic turn of events, Zanu PF Masvingo Provincial Youth leader Delight Mandebvu, who was involved in a road rage incident on the night of March 2, 2024, with former Masvingo City Council Mayor Collen Maboke recently filed attempted murder charges alleging he was hit by the latter’s vehicle, not by any other vehicle as had been reported.
Mandebvu who is said to be facing three counts of assault and one of negligent driving was admitted at Masvingo Provincial Hospital after suffering a broken leg.
After the incident, Maboke who contested in the August 23, 2023 elections as an independent candidate for Masvingo Urban constituency said on a fateful night their vehicles which were going in different directions sideswiped before the vehicle Mandebvu was traveling in made a U-turn, blocked Maboke’s car which was being driven by his wife, disembarked and started assaulting the former mayor, his wife as well as another passenger who was in the car.
However, giving his side of the story after 2 months of recovering from leg injuries, Mandebvu on May 2, 2024, told TellZim News that on the fateful night, they were on their way back from a meeting in Masvingo, when he pulled over at a lay-by near Chicken Shack food outlet to make some private calls.
“I was driving from Masvingo where we had a meeting, with my team. As we were heading towards Chicken Shack, I stopped at a lay-by near the food outlet. I alighted from the car to make some calls.
“While I was on the phone, my team complained that they were hungry since we had left Masvingo without eating. I gave them money to get food and told them I would follow or they could pick me up when they were done,” said Mandebvu.
He went on to say, Maboke who was on his way from Nyika, with a three-car convoy spotted his car turning into the food outlet. They stormed the car, expecting to find him, but only saw his team inside, smashed the rearview mirror, and fled the scene.
“Maboke was driving from Nyika, he had a convoy of three cars. When they saw my car turning to the food outlet, they blocked it. They opened the doors of my car and saw that I wasn’t there. They then took the car keys, broke the rearview mirror and left. While all this happened, I was still at the lay-by making calls,” said Mandebvu.
He also said that as the Mabokes continued their journey, they saw him still at the lay-by and stopped and Maboke tried to cross the road towards him on foot but went back in the car reversed towards him and he was hit in the process.
“After the brawl with my team, they spotted me and stopped, reversed and Maboke got out of the vehicle, which his wife was driving. He tried to cross the road to where I was. I then told him that I was on a call. He returned to the car; they reversed again and I was hit in the process after which I fell unconscious,” Mandebvu said.
Mandebvu further said a Mercedes-Benz driven by a teacher from Mutendi High School arrived at the scene and stopped to help but was attacked by Maboke and team before they sped away.
He also said when they heard that he had been taken to a clinic in Nyika, Maboke and his group followed him there and became violent.
“The team I was with in the car called my wife to inform her about what had happened. After they heard I was taken to a clinic in Nyika, Maboke and his companions followed me there. At the clinic, they assaulted my wife after she queried them about what had happened.
“They even assaulted the nurse on duty and my mother, who had arrived after my wife called her and all this information was recorded at the police station near the clinic in Nyika growth point,” Mandebvu said.
Mandebvu is set to appear in court next week for assault and negligent driving.
Maboke however has a different version of the incident, in which he said that after their vehicles sideswapped, Mandebvu and his companions assaulted him, and during the brawl, a car approached the scene but failed to brake on time before it overturned. Yet another car also approached the scene, failed to brake, and hit Mandebvu who was reportedly in the middle of the road, seriously injuring him in the process.
“I was coming from my rural home in Bikita with my family, my wife was driving while I slept. My wife told me that around the Mbungo area, we met another vehicle that was driving towards Nyika growth point and we sideswiped. After that, the vehicle that we had sideswiped within which Mandebvu was in made a U-turn, followed us and blocked the road. Mandebvu and the other occupants from his car then came to us and started assaulting my wife who was in the driver’s seat,” Maboke said.
He further said during the commotion, he was woken up after being hit by a bottle on his face.

In a stunning display of creativity and innovation, Masvingo City Council wowed both judges and visitors alike at the just-ended 64th edition of the Zimbabwe International Trade Fair (ZITF) winning the coveted Best Exhibit in Civic Participation Category award.
Masvingo City Mayor and Ward 4 Councilor Alec Tabe told TellZim News that the local authority was ahead in terms of using digital technologies to improve service delivery which is most likely what stood out in the competition.
“The judges looked at innovations that councils were doing in line with the theme “Innovation: The Catalyst to Industrialization and Trade. I believe what stood out most on our stand is both digital aspects and how the council is promoting trade and industrialization in Masvingo including aspects like tourism, zoning, and allocation of stands as well as investment opportunities.
“We have introduced online platforms for payment of bills as well as application and allocation of stands among others. The judges went through the local authorities’ checking technological advancements and we were probably the best.
“As a city, we are happy with the performance as this is the second award that we have gotten this year with our Town Clerk Engineer Edward Mukaratirwa having received the top award for best performance in urban local authorities. These are indicators that our city is performing well in terms of providing services to residents,” said Tabe.
Tabe said online payment platforms were coming in handy in terms of revenue collection while online application and allocation of stands increase transparency and efficiency.
“The online payment platforms improve revenue collection, they decongest people at our centres while enabling our clients to pay for services in the comfort of their homes. The online waiting list’ platform there is increased transparency as selection for qualification is done automatically, it can check whether one owns properties or not, it can conduct an individual selection of names on the waiting list,” said Tabe.
The ZITF 2024 edition was held under the theme “Innovation: The Catalyst to Industrialization and Trade” which showed that innovation, industrialization, and trade are key forces in economic growth and progress.
The 2024 edition which ran from April 23 to 27 was officially opened by Kenyan President William Ruto.
Masvingo City boasts of other services such as smart parking, smart markets, Geographical Information Systems (GIS), E-business licensing, smart water meter reading and system-generated payment plans.
