Current Zimbabwean government under the brand ‘New Dispensation’ has been labelled ‘New Desperation’ for relegating the general populace into the pools of poverty through presiding over increasing levels of unemployment the young people found themselves in, an opposition youth leader has said.
Speaking to the media in Masvingo on February 19, 2023 Citizens Coalition for Change (CCC) national youth taskforce coordinator Takudzwa Ngadziore said young people’s dreams of working for and in the country have been dealt a major blow by ‘Crocodile politicians’ who seem not to care at all.
“The country’s leaders are crocodile revolutionaries who think they understand where we are coming from and going, but they only understand the struggle for power retention and accumulation. The so-called ‘New Dispensation is now New Desperation’. Zimbabwe is not even under developed but has rather failed the test of being an under developed country and is way below the level of being under developed because of the leadership vacuum. The office of the president is vacant and there is no one there except for the property in there.
“The State which ideally should be a parent for its citizens has failed to play the role. I appreciate the role media is playing as the ‘fourth estate’ to make sure we have these platforms but not being a prophet of doom, but from an understanding of the situation obtaining the information gap is likely to widen because Zanu PF is afraid of the realities obtaining on the ground
“Zimbabweans can no longer support poverty, unemployment, forced mobility and oppression. They said the country has moved from austerity to prosperity but rather it’s a movement from austerity to poverty because the country that used to be the ‘bread basket’ is now the ‘begging basket’ of the region. Austerity policies are neo-liberal in nature.
“Young people who graduate from colleges and universities are driven through forced mobility looking for jobs in other countries and that is the narrative we want to and have the electorate aware of,” said Ngadziore.
The youthful former Zimbabwe National Students Union president also vowed CCC is positioned to lead Zimbabwe through a change of leadership.
“We have come up with the Register Elect and Protect (REAP) initiative on various social media platforms while on the ground we are traversing across the length and breadth of the country making sure we make people aware of the initiative.
“REAP is an inter-generational consensus to win Zimbabwe for change and transformation by ushering in a new prosperous era under the capable leadership of President Nelson Chamisa.
“CCC has embarked on a drive to reach out to people by people, person by person, street by street, village by village so that we re-energize the spirit of the revolution that is coming and are already in. It would be lie for Mnangagwa and Zanu PF to think they are going to face the next day in power. Their days in power are numbered. We are busy setting forth to look forward to issues after them in the presidency,” said Ngadziore.
Ngadziore also went on to say President Emmerson Mnangagwa’s failure to gazette the delimitation report within the stipulated time frame is unconstitutional and that Zanu PF has always breached the supreme law of the land.
“We understand that we are dealing with people who are afraid of change. The issue of (delimitation) boundaries is an important one so that political parties become aware of the constituencies at ward level and parliamentary seats.
“That failure to respect the constitution just tells you something on their fear of where we are coming from and going. CCC position remains that the constitution must be respected, have the constitution followed, delimitation report gazetted and the final response to it determines who we will face come election day,” he added.
He described as propaganda actions by Zanu PF information publicity structures to portray the party as most followed when in actual fact; its support base has dwindled.
“Zanu PF has felt the growing popularity of our president (Chamisa) and responded by coming up with ‘storm troopers’ Varakashi because they know very well that their party no longer commands a huge following on the ground and thus seek to push false narratives.
“Tafadzwa Mugwadi (Zanu PF information director) is always importing pictures trying to portray that Zanu PF has many supporters but that is not the case. The rallies are becoming too artificial with the intention of trying to dispel evidence that they no longer command as many followers as the may think.
“There also have been incidences of vote buying to falsify the declining support base. Whenever the President jets into the country from international tours, people are bused to the airport to sing which to us is a sign of desperation on the part of the party,” he added.
Ngadziore however said the continued incarceration of Zengeza West legislator Job Sikhala is part of the ‘bruises of the struggle’ but the party remains in solidarity with their cadre.
“The plan that comes through us is that of solidarity anchored on pillars of solidarity, justice and freedom which we believe in as social democrats. President Chamisa regularly visits Sikhala and his welfare is one of the things we do care for.
“But since we are dealing with a dictatorship, these detentions are part of the bruises emanating from the struggle we are faced with. There is no way we can tell the media that we will take out Sikhala from Chikurubi but our plan is to win Zimbabwe for change and then change the narrative in which people who air their voices are abducted, arrested, detained, tortured or even imprisoned.
“Sikhala as the brother I know, is not phased because he always speaks to courage and bravery that is he is not moved at all,” added Ngadziore.

Mutare Central constituency Member of Parliament Innocent Gonese has called upon government through Parliament to realize the need for and come up with ways to enable public access to contents of the bills prior to public hearings and widen communication channels.
Speaking during the public hearings on Prisons and Correctional Services Bill and Criminal Law and Codification Reform Amendment Bill on February 23, 2023 at Mucheke Hall in Masvingo, Gonese pointed on the need for participants to have a background understanding of the bills prior to consultations.
“Going forward, it might be advisable for us as an institution to devise methodologies that enable the people to acquaint themselves well with the contents of bills so that they are better informed because the summary which I gave may not be adequate,” said Gonese.
However the Citizens Coalition for Change (CCC) legislator said he was happy with the meaningful contributions they got from people though the meeting was poorly attended.
“I want to believe some of the people that came were not prepared to make contributions because it is not easy to be at the forefront in public meetings but I am happy that we got some useful contributions, very insightful and interesting views on the two bills,” added Gonese.
Some residents who attended the public hearings welcomed government efforts to bring about changes in the constitution concerning prisons and correctional facilities.
Speaking at the meeting, attendees welcomed the prisons and correctional services bill and said there was need to work on the rehabilitation of prisoners in preparing them for the life after imprisonment.
“Prison services must have well trained facilitators at the vocational centres for prisoners to learn practically and resources allocated towards correctional services including expert knowledge so that these people can learn and practice what they do,” said one of the attendants.
Some of the women at the meeting applauded the parole system and suggested that prisoners be allowed time to visit their families at home once in a while for socializing with their families.
“We wish government can allow prisoners some time to visit their families for a few days so they can get to see and know what is happening with their families. Some come back from prison to find their children raped or married off as this is quite stressing especially for us women when it happens in your absence,” said one woman.
As the world is moving towards reformation and rehabilitation of prisoners and not just punishment, the prisons and correctional services bill is set to introduce new issues such as the parole system, safety of prisoners, rights of prisoners, legal frameworks of operations of the prisons, establishment, functions and responsibilities of prison facilities, quarterly reviews and posts to the high court.

Water security improves as dams fill up, spill

Water security in the country is set to improve after incessant rains in the country over the past few weeks have seen a great improvement in water levels in dams with some of them spilling.
Some of the dams spilling are Mutirikwi, Muzhwi, Manyuchi, Woodlands, Nyatare, Makonese, Gozho, Turamura, Chingami, Mundi, Mataga, Chimwe, Matezva and Rozva.
Zimbabwe National Water Authority (ZINWA) Stakeholder Relations Officer Tsungirirai Shoriwa said the spilling of dams will ensure water security for various uses.
“The filling up and spilling of the dams means improved water security for both irrigation and domestic purposes,” said Shoriwa.
Shoriwa further said the availability of water also meant that irrigation water for the coming irrigation season will be enough and urged farmers to work on the required processes to legally use the water.
“Those intending to irrigate in the coming irrigation season are therefore being advised to start working on the renewal or signing up of their water abstraction agreements as required by the law,” said Shoriwa.
Other dams have also improved in water levels like the Tugwi-Mukosi which is now on 90.4 percent, Siya at 53 percent, Manjirenji at 54 percent and Bangala dam at 61.45 percent.
The improvement of water security in the nation enables government to realize its goals some of which were mentioned at the recently held Regional Water Conference which was held under the theme ‘National Water Roadmaps’ by the president of the Republic of Zimbabwe Emmerson Mnangagwa.
“The government has accelerated the development of critical water infrastructures to address access gaps. We are working on a record twelve dam projects across the country including the Gwayi-Shangani dam,” Mnangagwa is quoted.

…As Zanu PF enters campaign trail

MASVINGO – Citizens Coalition for Change (CCC) is facing a difficult time holding rallies and private meetings as the police often pounce on and arrest its members ahead of the 2023 general elections. Contrarily, Zanu PF is allowed by the same police to hold meetings and rallies freely across the country, a development that has raised suspicion that the ruling party might be working in cahoots with the police to block CCC from campaigning.
Zanu PF is already in a full swing campaign with its District Coordinating Committees (DCCs) across the country holding campaign rallies freely without any hindrance from the police, whilst CCC members are blocked by the same police.
Since last year, over 100 opposition supporters, including three Members of Parliament (MPs) have been arrested and some are still languishing in remand prison as they are denied bail, for various trumped up charges.
Political analysts claimed that the ruling party is bedding the police and the judiciary system which compromises the two institutions from professionally executing their duties.
Youth Decide Director Learnmore Munhangu said the political freedom remained under threat in Zimbabwe saying suppression of competitors by the ruling party was not good for a country.
“It seems as if the State is forgetting the founding values of this country as depicted by Section 3(2) of the constitution. We are a multi-party democratic society and we are supposed to conduct free, fair and regular elections,” said Munhangu.
“Political freedoms are under threat in the modern-day Zimbabwe as political parties are being banned from holding both private and public meetings whilst the ruling party had been on campaign mode since day one after 2018 general elections,” Munhangu added.
Political commentator Dr Gift Gwindingwe said the current prevailing political environment can breed political violence. He said there is need for dialogue to lay down procedures for peace ahead of the elections.
“There is a possibility for violence if political parties are not put to check, there is need to sit down and roadmap what should be followed by all political parties and I think this is the right time that all political parties come together and map the road to be followed in holding campaigns for this coming election so that all parties can hold their rallies peacefully,” said Dr Gwindingwe
A number of aspiring candidates in Masvingo Province are already positioning themselves for the day, doing campaigning meetings and programs unhindered though the opposition mainly Citizens Coalition for Change (CCC) member are being arrested even for holding meeting in their private homes.
However, because of this situation, CCC members seem not to be doing anything to campaign and some members are even thinking that they have no strategy. Zanu PF new faces that are making inroads campaigns in the province include ward six Masvingo Urban Councilor and Masvingo City Council Deputy Mayor Wellington Mahwende who is eyeing the Masvingo Urban seat.
Mahwende pulled a shocker in 2018 when he snatched the seat from then MDC-T party. Mahwende is likely to battle it out in Zanu PF primaries with James Pande who has also declared interest.
In Masvingo North, a number of candidates have since lined up and doing a number of meetings and programmes.
Amongst Zanu PF aspirants in Masvingo North are Brian Mudhumi, who seems to have the incumbent Davis Marapira’s blessing, Petros Mutema and Pascal Mudzikisi.
In Zaka Central, Davis Marapira who transferred to Zaka from Masvingo is campaigning everyday gathering people for donating stationery to schools, among other things without any hindrance.
In Chiredzi battle lines have been drawn in Chiredzi West where former Chiredzi Town Council Chairperson Francis Moyo and the incumbent Farai Musikavanhu have already entered campaign trail.
The latest developments in the persecution of main opposition CCC members have seen the arrest of Masvingo Urban ward 7 councilor Richard Musekiwa for holding a meeting at his home and he has since appeared in court for the charges.
In January 2023, 26 CCC members including two sitting MPs were arrested in Budiriro where they were having a meeting on allegations that they wanted to disturb public peace.
Munhangu said as youths they were concerned about arrests of opposition party activists saying they needed a peaceful environment for a credible election with all parties given access to the electorate as well as access to the media.
“As young people, we are so concerned by the level of suppression which is slowly taking our nation into serious authoritarian rule. Continuous use of State Security and draconian laws to arrest and block members of the opposition parties to freely campaign is regrettable.”
“Neither legitimate power can be achieved through suppression of the competitors nor credible elections. We need a peaceful and free environment as we approach general elections; a situation whereby every party has access to the both the rural and urban electorate, and access to private and State media,” said Munhangu.

Chivi teenager appeals for tumor removal financial help

A teenager from ward 16 in Chivi Central is appealing for financial help to have a vicious tumor that has taken much of his face removed at Parirenyatwa Group of Hospitals in Harare.
Tatenda Mupfurashanga (17) has had the growth since he was only four years old, and has already been operated on twice to remove the tumor which continues reappearing.
Mupfurashanga is due for another operation but is in need of US$850 to cover the operation fees, excluding hospital and medication fees.
“My parents cannot afford the required money since they are just communal farmers. I am appealing to well-wishers to help me so that I continue with my life normally.
“I sat for my ordinary level exams last year at Chongogwe High School and I passed four out of six subjects and I would want to continue with my education if possible, but at the moment the growth is really hindering me from being my best self,” Mupfurashanga said.
Community Rehabilitation officer for ward 16, Chivi, Albert Imbayarwo said Mupfurashanga had the potential to assist his parents if he continues with his education, but the growing tumor was now deterring him from realizing his full potential.
“He had an operation in 2014 and another one in 2015, but due to lack of funds as well as Covid-19, he could not have another one. It seems as if the bones in his face keep growing hence the need for regular surgeries to remove the bulging growth in his face.
“Tatenda also needs to have a social life and to socialize with his peers which now is becoming difficult because of his condition. We are appealing to Zimbabweans and other well-wishers to please help him so that he leads a normal life again,” Imbayarwo said.

Grassroots table tennis up for change in Manicaland

Manicaland Table Tennis Association (MTTA) is looking forward to closing the gap in table tennis following the initiation of a training programme held at Moffatt Hall last month where 28 teachers from public schools.
Speaking to TellZim News MTTA chairperson Nelson Murenje said the response from Mutare has been great especially focusing on the girl child.
“The response is overwhelming especially in schools, even those in districts outside Mutare. This rise in female teachers involvement in the sport coaching is encouraging. This will definitely boost women participation in the sport at all levels.
“We are mobilising resources so that we reach out to all the seven districts of Manicaland. That’s our plan,” said Murenje.
Table tennis is one sport that has been swallowed by mainstream sporting codes in Zimbabwe and popularity of the sporting discipline has for long been fading if not dead especially in terms of grassroots development.
Ten female teachers participated.
The idea behind the programme was to equip tutors with table tennis skills and certify them at the same time.
Training syllabus at the workshop was based on the standard Zimbabwe Table Tennis Union (ZTTU) coaching manual which includes theory, physical exercises and drills.
In an official report compiled from the workshop MTTA laid bare their plans going forward.
“We wish to execute our plan of action of holding such coaching workshops in all districts of Manicaland, create a special and effective way of involving secondary schools in table tennis activities and engage organizations or individuals to partner the association in the district coaching outreach programmes,” read the statement by MTTA.
MTTA looks to involve schools within Mutare and other districts in its drive to change the image of the sport.

Gweru- based graphic designing and creative company Gracian Creative Agency (GCA) has taken a leap further towards changing the livelihoods of young creative designers through an encouragement by advising talented designers to shift from creativity to professionalism.
The call was made during a Young Creative Capacity Building Engagement which was held in Gweru last week (Saturday).
The engagement which was focused on scouting and nurturing young graphic designers across the province was also inspired by efforts to remove young people from drug and substance abuse.
Gracian Creative Agency Founder and Creative Arts Mentor Remberance Mutero said a great business experience had been drawn from his life situation which motivated him to become a great designer.
“We came to capacitate talented young people who have graphic and art designing skills. We are saying yes courses are there, but you mustn’t necessarily own a degree or an ‘A’ level certificate to be a graphic designer .Have the mind set and skills alongside passion to spread art through impacting designs.
“I am a graphic designer not because I trained, No, my life experiences changed my situation. I grew up in a tough life environment where I had to work for me to eat, cloth and go to school or even buy clothes every day. I am a product of the life experiences which I encountered, that’s why l am inspiring other youth out there to discover themselves.
“As I stand today before you, I am finishing my degree in Computer Engineering this year with Midlands State University because I embraced and believed the art of graphic creativity. We need more of such initiatives and brains among youth even for us to resist things like drugs and substance abuse as well as other social ills,” said Mutero.
He further encouraged young designers to register their brands and companies.
“From this year going forward, let’s adopt a business minded format, register our companies and brands to penetrate the markets. Uphold professional business values with clients in order to grow yourselves,” he added.
A Graphic designer and Pastor Simon Mugodo said it is always good to learn new business ideas.
“There are many things we take simple in business which derail us from professionalism. Imagine things such a receipt, quotations, meeting deadlines and even engaging in work contract matters as they define working operations on a daily basis.
“We must learn and embrace new ideas in order to grow the graphic designing industry. Besides Pastoring, I am a young graphic designer and this has pushed me further, I now own a company called ‘Stratos Branding,” he said.
An upcoming Creative student, Emmanuel Hlambelo however said most young designers were struggling to price their works and this was hindering growth in the designing markets.
The Arts and Designing industry has emerged to be one of the most competitive and growing sectors which embraces uniqueness, creativity and innovativeness in order to sustain the designing career on various facets and markets even globally.

GUTU – Mupandawana High School is implementing government decision to allow schools to go commercial so as to open revenue inflow to complement parents’ efforts in raising funds for school operations.
Speaking during the official commissioning of the school administration block on Thursday (16 February) 2023, the School Head Tranos Mbwirire said the school was realizing some profits from hiring of the school bus.
He said apart from bus hiring, the school also makes money from the school tuck-shop where they sell foodstuff and other basic commodities.
“We are proud owners of the school bus which we hire out and realize some profits which we use for school development projects. We also have a tuck-shop again which sells a variety of goods and we are getting some money from there as well,” said Mbwirire
He went on to say for skill based learning, the school was involved in a number of agricultural projects where they also get money from the sale of the produce.
The school has 260 broiler layers under battery cage system and the chickens produce at least six crates of eggs per day.
Apart from egg project, the school boasts of 63 ducks and several ducklings which they sell in batches to individuals and businesses.
The school also has 36 occupied beehives which they harvest from time to time and sell the honey in and out of Gutu.

They have a fishpond which is currently under repair and the head said once repairs are complete they will have to restock new breeds which are competitive on the market.
“Our fishpond is under repair and once we are done, we want to get a new breed because we realized that the previous one did not perform as we anticipated. We also have bee hives which give us money when we harvest,” said Mbwirire.
The school also runs a vibrant piggery project as well as crop production with most of their land being under bean production.
Mupandawana High has a total number of 1152 leaners with 584 being boys and 568 being girls. The staff compliment is 45 teachers and 5 support staff.
Mbwirire said the school has a shortage of 8 teachers since they should be 53 but said they were aiming at growing the school pass rate especially at O level which had been affected by Covid-19.
“Our aim now is to grow our pass rate, at ‘A’ level we are always above 90 and we are striving towards 100 percent. At ‘O’ level we have always been above 50 percent but we had dropped a bit due to Covid-19 but we are now back on track,” said Mbwirire

Gweru -Network of Men Living with HIV (ZMN+) has called for the closure in the prostate cancer care gaps in Zimbabwe.
The call was made during the commemoration of World Cancer Day on February 4 with this year’s theme being “Closing the care gap” and will run for the next three years from 2022 to 2024.
However, last year’s theme was centered on bridging the knowledge gap for health services especially providers and the investment gap.
Beat Non Communicable Diseases Zimbabwe Network director and national secretary for ZNM+ Jacob Ngwenya said there need to amplify voices in bridging the care gaps against cancer.
“As men we are just standing aside and watching our peers struggling with prostate cancer and majority of them succumbing to death because of the cancer. If you check, the print, electronic and social media are very much awash with cervical and breast cancer campaigns to combat the two cancers but not prostate. I am not advocating for a shift but inclusivity in service provision.
“The Ministry of Health and Child Care and other private players have done very well to provide services for cervical and breast cancer. As men living with HIV, we call for a policy shift that will also see prostate cancer given the attention it duly deserves. Prostate cancer knows no boundaries, it is affecting men everywhere in Zimbabwe (both in rural and urban areas)”, he said.
Ngwenya added that the fight against cancer doesn’t have any social status as it affects everyone.
“This type of cancer (prostate cancer) is found in men who are 40 years old and above. As men ages, the prostate gland which is responsible for the production of spears grows big and blocks the urethane which is responsible for carrying urine or damages the body’s urinary control mechanism which leads to lack of urine control.
“Usually after growing big, cancerous cells start growing and in worst case scenario the cancer spreads to other parts of the body.
“Prostate cancer screening is very expensive in the country as it involves some tests and ultra sound scans which are beyond the reach of many men.
“Those who are formally employed and are on medical aid have better survival chances than those without. Women get free cancer screening for cervical cancer but men have to pay to be screened for prostate cancer.
“Rolling out of prostate cancer awareness is long overdue as many men are losing their lives slowly but sure. Men should also change their attitudes towards health and embark on good health seeking behavior. Masculinity backed by ascribed gender roles have seen a lot of men dying from curable diseases.
“So we are taking it to our own hands to enlightening our fellow men on changing their perception towards health so that they reduce their risky behaviors. We also remind them that women’s health is in their hands and they need to ensure response to safeguard the health of others,” he added.
