Recalled Gweru councillors successfully file for nomination

Tinaani Nyabereka

Gweru- Three Citizens Coalition for Change (CCC) former councillors who were recently recalled from council under political circumstances have successfully filed their papers at the nomination papers, making them eligible for the upcoming by-elections scheduled for December 3.
Speaking after filing papers on November 3 at the nomination court, CCC Midlands province chairperson Josiah Makombe said as a party they were ready to contest and confident of victory.
He added that even if the three candidates win, the party was still lacking in terms of its seating majority in the council as compared to MDC T as the ratio stood at 8 to 9.
“Despite not having the majority we will continue our work and stand our ground to influence decision making processes, as we are representing people’s views.
“Our three candidates have filed their nomination papers and they were successful. We hope to retain our seats with these three councillors who had their work affected by recalls last month.
“We are here for the people so that we finish the job we were tasked to do by residents from 2018. However, if our three candidates win, it doesn’t change any structures within council as the Mayor and Deputy Mayor are already there.
“However, in terms of our number, we won’t be having the majority as the majority is with MDC T having nine councillors while the other four are ours,” he said.
Ward 5 councillor Cleopas Shiri, ward 18’s John Manyundwa and Ward 4’s Martin Chivhoko were recalled last month.
The Zimbabwe Electoral Commission (ZEC) has since proclaimed the date with Gweru District Elections Officer Joshua Mhino confirming dates on which ward 4, 5 and 18 by-elections will be held to fill the vacancy created after the recall of former councillors by MDC-T leader Douglas Mwonzora.
“Since more than one candidate has been successfully nominated in wards 4, 5 and 18, a poll shall take place on Saturday December 3, 2022, in accordance with section 125 subsection 4 (b) of the Electoral Act Chapter 2:13 as read with the Zimbabwe Electoral Commission notice, published on October 13 and 20, 2022,” he said.
Other three candidates who are also vying for the same seats are Gibson Chingwadza who is contesting for the ward 4, Walter Makwalo running for ward 18 and Kwanisai Mafa for ward 5 all contesting under ZANU PF ticket.
A new party Emmanuel Party which is represented by Leon Nyahwi is vying for ward 5.
Meanwhile ZANU PF District Coordinating Committee Secretary for Information Victor Maride said the party was more than ready to serve its people by addressing the various challenges affecting residents in Gweru.

Remains of missing Taurai Takawira found

Beverly Bizeki

The remains of Taurai Lovemore Takawira have reportedly been found burnt, 34 days after he went missing under mysterious circumstances.
Masvingo Provincial Police Spokesperson Inspector Kudakwashe Dhewa confirmed the development and said investigations are still underway though he could not give more details.
“Yes, I can confirm having received a report of human remains found and police have since launched an investigation to establish the truth of the matter,” said Dhewa.
According to sources privy to the developments, human remains believed to be Takawira’s were found on November 3, 2022 in a thick forest near Rukanda Farm in Masvingo West some 3 km from the scene where he was assaulted.
According to sources, Takawira’s body was found decomposed at a scene that showed that he lost a lot of blood with evidence of arson as his remains were burnt.
Positive identifications are also said to have been done by the late’s wife Tendai Chishoko (39).
The sources further claimed the late Takawira’s I-tel phone was found with blood stains in the pocket of his jean trousers which was bundled up about 40 meters away from where the remains were.
Takawira was last seen on September 30, 2022.
The disappearance of Takawira according to Chief Bere’s spokesperson Adnos Chikomo is strongly linked to boundary disputes that have marred the resuscitation of their chieftaincy with Chief Charumbira loyalists allegedly opposing the new arrangement.

New Marriages Act a wakeup call?

…demystifying the act

Beverly Bizeki

Social media circles have been awash with discussions about the enactment of the new Marriages Act with most women saying they feel threatened by the introduction of civil universal partnerships majority which may mean them sharing properties acquired in the marriage with ‘small houses’ (mistresses).
Property ownership in marriages remains a bone of contention in the event of separation of partners, divorce or death of a spouse and has gotten tongues wagging as people try to interpret the new act which came into effect on September 16, 2022.
Unpacking the new Marriage Act Lin Manyika of Great Zimbabwe University Legal Clinic recently brought some light on the interpretation of the act at a fellowship meeting chaired by Zimbabwe Council of Churches Masvingo Women’s Fellowship.
The new Marriages Act according to Manyika follows the changes made in the constitution in 2013 with special reference to section 78 and 26 which include forbidding the marrying off of children below 18 years and the need for consent of both parties in marriage as well as equality of rights.
The Act also combines the two marriage acts in Zimbabwe 5.11 and 5.07 to make the new marriages act and has not rendered invalid these two marriage types whilst still considering adultery an offence in the presence of a civil marriage.
The most misinterpreted section of the act is the civil universal partnership which according to Manyika is not considered a type of marriage but is only considered during the sharing of properties in the event of separation or the death of a spouse which allows equal sharing of properties.
“The act was made to assist women especially those who face denial of spousal benefits from relatives in the event of death of a partner or denial of a partnership by the husband. There are some women who are staying together with their partners and have had no lobola paid or only tsvakirai kuno was paid who are considered to be not legally married they are considered to be in a universal partnership.
“The civil universal partnership is only considered in the event of death of a spouse or on divorce but is not considered a marriage,” explained Manyika.
Manyika further explained that properties belonging to the legal wife cannot be shared with the small house but the latter has power over properties bought by the two people in a partnership with children set to get a share of their father’s benefits like pension funds.
Women at the fellowship were urged to be actively involved in the purchasing of properties and keeping records for the purpose of proving their ownership of properties in marriage.
“When buying properties, be actively involved and have receipts or proof of payment in the process and have your names attached on these properties and not be labelled as next of kin to avoid conflict,” said Manyika.
She also mentioned that lobola is not a requirement for marriage at the courts hence parents should not refuse their kids to be legally married if they ask for it as they are now in a position to get married at the courts without lobola payment.
Issues of importance raised at the meeting also included the protection of women and properties from children who have a tendency to want to want to take over properties from their mothers in the event of death of the father figure.
“Men are better people as compared to our children who have become a threat to us as they want to take over properties from parents with some going to the extent of chasing away their mothers from the matrimonial homes,” explained one attendant.

Govt ZW$4 billion injection into Pfumvudza input transportation gives farmers relief

Innocent Muraiwa

Farmers in Masvingo province have applauded the move by government in boosting the delivery efficiency of Pfumvudza farming inputs by disbursing ZW$ 4 billion for the transportation of inputs from collection points to every household free of charge.
Zaka-based farmer Samson Chidzirira said he was happy as a farmer that the inputs would reach farmers on time.
“We are very elated that the Pfumvudza inputs have been made readily available for use before the farming season begins and we are very much happy that we are going to produce better yields as compared to those of last year,” said Chidzirira.
Gutu based farmer Tongai Muzenda at Chindito Farm also expressed said he was relieved that government had prioritized the agricultural sector.
“Government has shown robust support in promoting agriculture and the move will sustain us to achieve the 2030 Upper Middle Economy Income which is an economic blue print embarked on by the government,” said Muzenda.
Chief Director in the Ministry of Lands, Agriculture, Water Fisheries and Rural Development Professor Albert Jiri said the initiative should be supported for food security.
“Agriculture is one of the most reliable sources of income which should be practiced so as to enhance food security for the country’s ten provinces.
“As proved to be among the fourteen main pillars of National Development Strategy 1, agriculture is the fast-tracking economy booster that dissolves almost 90percent of the country’s economic hardships”, said Jiri.
Masvingo Provincial Crop and Livestock Officer Aaron Muchazivepi urged farmers in the province to fully utilize Pfumvudza farming.
“Masvingo is an environment with fertile soils suitable for agriculture; the province will go an extra mile in lifting up the country’s agricultural position.
“I urge farmers in the province to take the Pfumvudza programme with extra vigilance as well as sticking to its policies so that the collective efforts will be seen producing better yields which will then help the country’s ten provinces to withstand food insecurities,” said Muchazivepi.
He however cautioned lazy farmers who put efforts in driving back the progressive Pfumvudza programme that they will be ex-communicated so that only united people work together in hastening up the agricultural sector.
Through the Presidential Inputs Scheme, government distributed essential inputs like maize seedlings, traditional grains and fertilizers.

Beverly Bizeki

Morgenster Central Primary School on Thursday (October 20) held a colorful speech and prize giving day where pupils were awarded for excellency in academia and other disciplines.
N.Richards Director for Southern Region Andrew Chekani who was the guest of honor at the event applauded the school for organizing the event saying it helps in preserving and upholding standards.
HE urged learners to embrace studies in Information Communication Technology (ICT) saying the world has gone digital and they should build more on their characters in the fight against intolerance, drug abuse and hate speech.
“Institutions like this must be preserved by maintaining the standards of the school like we are doing here hence these programs are important.
“To you learners, the world is going digital so you should embrace ICTs in your studies and avoid drug and substance abuse if you are to make it in life,” said Chekani.

Chipinge’s monumental Gaza Stadium refurbishment underway

Livingstone Mtetwa

CHIPINGE- Driving from Chinheya to Gaza High School is a smooth sail on a tarred road with a few potholes to glide upon; however as you reach the school gate, the tarred road ends and you start rumbling in the heavily potholed dust road.
About 150 metres along that road to your left, you notice a freshly constructed solid bar security fence commonly referred to as “palisades” which extends right round about the stadium compound and a fading ‘Welcome to Gaza Stadium’ billboard.
It took council almost seven months from March 2022 to refurbish the facility, with final touches to the fence being done in October under a week ago.
Acting town Secretary James Mutemera confirmed that indeed the refurbishment of the stadium is underway.
“The renovations for the stadium are underway and the first stage which is fencing is now complete. We are now moving towards the second stage which is developing the internal infrastructure,” said Mutemera.
Chipinge ward 6 councillor Lovemore Mutimwii attributed the delay to financial constraints.
“It is true that the refurbishment of Gaza Stadium has unfortunately taken a long time. However, this has been due to financial constraints. At one point the contractor who was contracted to erect the palisades abandoned the project citing late payment by council and work stopped for almost seven months,” said Mutimwii.
He also said that the low fees that are being charged to those who want to use the stadium are the reason for its poor standards.
“I would also like to inform the public that we are unable to up the stadium’s standards because we are charging sub-economic rates to the users.
“And, lastly, the stadium is now vastly dilapidated that we need a huge capital injection to bring it back to the required standards,” he added.
Gaza stadium boasts of being the biggest stadium in Chipinge district where most of the crowd drawing events like the Independence Day, the Defence Forces Day, musical galas, rallies and church gatherings are held.

Key Populations: Achieving equitable access to end abuse of sex workers

Promise Nyakunhuwa/Caroline Hunzvi

Enhancing key population programming and addressing related institutional and capacity issues is a main issue faced by various institutions, universities, colleges, NGOs and the government in dealing with sex worker and sex for money situations. Stigma, discrimination and criminalization are among the factors that prevent sex workers from accessing health care. Certain groups face a disproportionate risk of HIV infection and transmission in all countries and settings. Even in countries with low HIV prevalence rates, men who have sex with men, sex workers, drug users, and transgender people, collectively known as key populations, are consistently at higher risk at contracting HIV.

Sex workers are  a key population in the risk factor of getting HIV when compared to the general population as noted by UNAIDS Global AIDS update 2021. The Key Populations Research and Implementation Program in Zimbabwe focuses on the sexual and reproductive health, HIV prevention and care needs, and overall social welfare of female sex workers. On behalf of the Ministry of Health and Child Care and the National Aids Council, Center for Sexual Health and HIV/AIDS Research (CeSHHAR) manages the National ‘Sisters with a Voice’ program for female sex workers. Sisters with a Voice is one of Africa’s few nationally scaled programs for sex workers. However sex workers face discrimination when they seek reproductive health services.

Sex workers allege that they face abuse when it comes to their job for instance discrimination from health care workers when they seek medical attention; discrimination in societies were they live, abuse by authorities and clients, nonpayment of their services by clients, discriminations from authorities who should protect them and lack of proper counselling on their job on how to protect themselves.

There also have been allegations that in some instances police authorities have forced sexual intercourse with sex workers and do not use protection. When they go to seek medical attention nurses even with knowledge of their jobs knowingly ask them to bring their partners as a stance to humiliate them. Female police officers are being reported of dismissing accusations of sex workers who are abused by their clients and accusing them of spreading HIV. Extortion by police officers and family is an abuse male sex workers face, on top of intimidation and hate speech.

CeSHHAR Zimbabwe noted that fifty-four percent of sex workers in Zimbabwe have HIV with a 10 percent increase every year due to lack of preventive measures. According to the findings of a study conducted by CeSHHAR, the stigmatization and discrimination of commercial sex workers in some Zimbabwean hospitals and clinics is impeding their access to increased HIV/AIDS treatment and care. They are now afraid and  embarrassed of going to clinics or hospitals to seek medical attention  due to public humiliation they face from health workers who at times accuse them of being ‘prostitutes’ and spreading HIV.

Young girls in communities are facing abuse with girls as young as nine years having started working as sex workers. For instance in Epworth Harare Zimbabwe there are reports of young girls being pimped out by their ‘boyfriends’ who makes them have sexual intercourse for money despite their young age. They even have definition of types of services they offer, in which they do not have enough knowledge to protect themselves, face unwanted pregnancies, get sick and stay without treatment.

Due to the nature of their jobs, sex workers go through a lot of psychological trauma. In most instances due to the fact that they are usually bashed and attacked by society, they hardly share their problems and end up slipping into depression which pushes them into drugs that are harmful to their health to try and numb the pain they go through. In worst case scenarios they end up committing suicide. This has also contributed to high rates of suicide cases in the country.

Due to the fact that societies have not been fully educated fully about sex work, they usually treat them as second class citizens. In some cases they are not allowed to participate fully in society for instance in churches. Their children and family members also face discrimination. Without even listening to their side the story on what led them to become sex workers, society rushes to judge them.

Early responses given in Zimbabwe when it comes to sex workers as key populations were in regard to High School and Tertiary Education students and ordinary sex workers. Institutions must tailor services to the specific needs of populations affected by sex workers, as well as invest in programs that address the root causes of discrimination. The best way to accomplish this is to include the key populations in the design, implementation, and monitoring of those health services, as well as in policy decisions that affect them. They empathize more on their counterpart than people of populations not affected by these issues and do not discriminate them.

To assist sex workers in Zimbabwe clinics provide a full range of sexual and reproductive health services, including HIV testing and counseling, referral to ART, start of pre-exposure prophylaxis (PrEP), family planning, condom promotion and distribution, and STI diagnosis and treatment. This was achieved by services in different provinces of Zimbabwe which include static clinics, highway mobile clinics and local mobile clinic sites. These offer first hand assistance to sex workers, which is a step in the right direction.

Bata Stadium: Sheasham FC’s new home

Tinaani Nyabereka

Gweru- Central Region Division 1 Champions Sheasham FC is set to use Bata Stadium as their new home ground.
This was reviewed by Club President Clever Mandaza during the club’s fundraising dinner held last week in Gweru.
Speaking at the dinner Mandaza said as a company, Sheasham construction is in the process of revamping the grounds.
“We are in the process of renovating our Bata grounds. Work is on-going at the site as we need to have a proper facility to host our matches. The pitch, changing rooms, VIP stands are being worked on and we hope before the beginning of next season, our ground will be complete.
“For a team to be at its best ability of performing there is need for proper infrastructure and facilities. All the equipment which is being used is ours.” Mandaza said.
Mandaza assured the team that the club was going to try and flex their muscles to meet the demands of the top flight.
“Now that we have achieved our goal, we ought to be strong and need to put in place proper training facilities, improve transportation of our players, housing among other things.
“So this means we need more money to meet our goals. The family is now big and we say to our friends in the corporate sector, join us and be part of the team as we market you,” he added.
Glow Petroleum Company Founder Aaron Chinhara pledged to closely work with Sheasham ahead of the coming season.
He further pledged to support the team with a US$ 50 000 package throughout the upcoming 2023 season.
“I am willing to walk along with, partner and work with Sheasham as I have heard testimonies of the hard work which they have done in uplifting sports,” he said.
Bata grounds were last used by Bata Power FC long back while the stadium became defunct in the late 80’s after the club’s demise.

Cancer survivor gives hope to the nation

Tinaani Nyabereka

Gweru- A breast cancer survivor Juliet Maziriri who resides in Mbizo, Kwekwe recently said there was hope and life in the battle against cancer.
Speaking during a Cool Cakes Company Breast Cancer Sensitization Campaign in Gweru last week, Maziriri said she is a testimony to how early treatment of breast cancer can save life.
“I can testify as a cancer survivor. I was diagnosed with breast cancer in 2008 but I saw the hand of God. I went through a lot but my family, church members as well as relatives stood with me.
“My case was discovered earlier and this helped me to access treatment sooner than later. I was referred to South Africa for treatment. Though the mammography, radiation and chemotherapy treatments were painful and expensive, I kept my faith in God. If you are a patient, you need to have a positive mind and listen to all advice which these doctors give you.
“On December 27, I am marking 14 years as a survivor, and am grateful. God is there and so is hope in Christ because there is need to get the treatment right and putting your trust in Christ,” she said.
Speaking at the same event, Medical Practitioner and Health Expert Doctor Willard Mushiwokufa said breast cancer was the second deadliest type of cancer behind cervical cancer and called for the need to unite and raise awareness on breast cancer if ever the fight is to be won.
He added that men were also at risk of getting breast cancer.
“Worldwide, we are commemorating breast cancer month and breast cancer is number 2 killer after cervical which is rated as the world deadliest disease in the world.
“However, we have some special groups who are at high risk of contracting breast cancer. These include people who smoke especially men, women between the ages 15-40 going up to 60, anyone who has been a victim of cancer before or whose genealogy has a history of cancer, I advise you to go and get tested if you feel that your breasts are not well.
“I therefore urge mothers who are breast feeding, to at least breast feed up to 1 year 6 months. This helps you reduce high risk of contracting cancer,” he said.
Cool Cakes Bakery director Shamiso Zvidzai expressed gratitude to the company saying it is a dream come true as they had managed to give back to the community.
“We are grateful as an organisation that we managed to give back to our breast cancer survivors. We are giving cakes and food hampers as we hear testimonies which are here to give us and others out there hope.
“We need to give to others this hope and be united in this fight because no one is safe. As Cool Cakes, we have some of the survivors out of these 8 who couldn’t make it to this occasion; we will follow them with their cakes as we continue with our awareness. We want to reach out to cancer patients with the word of hope, together we can beat cancer,” she said.
Breast Cancer Awareness Month in October is a time to come together to raise awareness; promote education, screening, and early detection; raise money, honour the fallen, and support patients and survivors.
According to the Ministry of Health and Child Care’s 2019 /20 report on cancer assessment, out of 2 062 recorded cancer-related deaths so far in Zimbabwe, breast cancer has been responsible for 7 percent of the fatalities, with cervical cancer being the highest killer accounting for 13 percent cancer deaths in the country.
Meanwhile latest findings by scientists revealed that about 1 500 women succumb to cervical cancer while over 1 000 fall prey to breast cancer each year.
