How to catch fish

Charles Mbengo

…fishing inspires budding
writer to explore youth struggles

Tiyani Hahlani

Charles Mbengo, a 23-year-old former Midlands State University (MSU) student resident in Masvingo, says he will soon publish his first book which explores the dilemmas often faced by young people.
Titled ‘The Catch: Life Lessons From a Fisherman’, the book dwells on the often identical struggles of young people and dissects their frustrations while presenting possible solutions their life challenges.
In an interview with TellZim News, Mbengo said the book, which he started writing in July last year, will be launched at the end of September.
“Everything is almost in place for the launch of the book. It has been a journey for me, but I am glad I am now almost there,” said Mbengo.
He said he was inspired by the lived experiences of fishermen who, despite often suffering big disappointments and hazards in the line of their work, always hold on to the hope that the next day will offer something better.
“The book is informed by daily experiences of fishermen as well as by the revelations that came to me after relating those experiences to the lived realities of other people, particularly the youth. It does not just analyse, but offers universal solutions. Fishing is therefore a metaphor for life.
“The book is intended to help the youth to make the right choices in life; sparing neither labour nor pain in their pursuit of the desires of their hearts instead of endlessly relying on the patronage and benevolence of others for survival,” said Mbengo.education

The annual event, which celebrates cultural diversity and artistic expression, will this year be held on September 22 at Paiyapo Arts Development and Heritage Centre in the Bangira area of the district under Chief Musikavanhu.
It started in 2013 and has proved to be one of the biggest cultural events in the region, drawing enthusiasts from such sectors as education, culture and heritage, arts and tourism.
This year's edition runs under the theme, ‘Ndau Culture: Enhancing the Conservation of the Environment and Natural Resources for Food Security’, with the motto being ‘Yesterday, Today and Tomorrow; Our Concern in the Arts’.
The event will be graced by guests from the National Arts Council of Zimbabwe (NACZ), Environmental Management Agency (Ema), Zimbabwe Tourism Agency (ZTA), various government ministries, Non-Governmental Organisations (NGOs), tertiary institutions and researchers.
Ndafa founder, Philip Kusasa Bangira, who is a recipient of Alpha Media Holdings’ 2017 inaugural 100 Great Zimbabweans Award in the arts and culture category, said he expected improved turnout this year as the festival continues to grow.

ZVISHAVANE – The Zvishavane Lions Club last week Saturday extended a helping hand to the needy by donating food and other basics to inmates at the local Jairos Jiri home.
Speaking at the event, Lions Club district 412A governor, David Saunyama said social responsibility in the form of giving back to the community was part of the club’s core objectives.
“We as Lions Club know that our duty is to serve the community. We have identified areas and groups of people who are in need and Jairos Jiri was identified as one such institution that requires a helping hand,” said Saunyama.
Jairos Jiri Zvishavane acting director, Nomatter Chagwinya expressed gratitude for the generous gesture, saying what the club had done should inspire others to help.
“We struggle to find enough food for the people we look after. There is also a severe lack of medication and other basics due to lack of money. I would like to thank the Lions Club for coming to our rescue. With the staff they have donated, we can go for days,” said Chagwinya.
She later told TellZim News that the Zvishavane Jairos Jiri home was running poultry projects that were helping to meet some of the institution’s dietary needs as well as to raise money for other necessities.
The institution, which was opened in 1977, has Nyarayi Mashavidze (105) as the oldest female inmate while James Romani (70) is the oldest male inmate.
Another female inmate, Rebecca Jakata (95), said as an elderly person, there were few things that were as critical to her wellbeing as medication.
“Medication is what we need every day so we thank Lions Club for bringing that to us. Our days will be better this time around,” said Jakata.
Lions Club Zvishavane promised to drill a borehole and install a water storage tank to help the institution start a small irrigation project.local
