Sanganai/Hlanganani Expo boom for Zim tourism

Buyers from UK, Tanzania, Uganda, Zambia and South Africa on 9 September visited the Great Zimbabwe monuments

Shingirai Vambe

HARARE – The 11th edition of the Sanganai-Hlangani Tourism Expo has been deemed a huge success after a number of exhibitors at the Zimbabwe International Trade Fair grounds received awards last Friday night.
Companies that got outstanding recognition at the expo include the Civil Aviation Authority of Zimbabwe (CAAZ) which won the Public Institution Award.
CAAZ representatives vowed to accelerate work on airports and aerodromes around the country to improve accessibility to the country’s numerous tourist attraction.
Following the Joshua Nkomo Heritage Trail which was held on the September 5, buyers and tour operators from different countries around the world toured exhibition stands and also had an opportunity to network with peers.
The message being communicated to both local and international visitors was that Zimbabwe is a safe destination. This was confirmed through sentiments shared by a number of exhibitors, tour operators and tourists from mainly Asian and African countries.
The Zimbabwe Tourism Authority (ZTA), the principal organiser of the expo, facilitated a number of touring groups that have been visiting various attractions around the country after the expo. The objective of the tours were to expose the country’s tourism potential to more people.
The destinations included the Mutarazi Falls, the Great Zimbabwe monuments, Hwange National Park and the majestic Victoria Falls. During the tours, visitors managed to assess the state of hospitality facilities around the country.
Speaking in Bulawayo earlier on, Vice President Constantino Chiwenga urged hotel operators exhibiting at the expo to revamp their facilities to meet world class standards.
ZTA chief executive officer (CEO), Dr Karikoga Kaseke said his organisation had embarked on an exercise to make sure that all employees working in the hospitality industry got tested and certified.
“We are encouraged, though at short notice, that the vice president has spoken about this and we are hitting the ground running to improve on service delivery. Zimbabwe is well-known for being among the best hospitality service providers and we would want to go even further,” said Kaseke.
He said the request by ZTA for rural and urban local authorities to participate in this year’s expo was designed to make sure they work hand in glove with tourism players in marketing their own tourist attractions.
Foreign tourists who spoke to TellZim News said they were now convinced that the negative stories in the international media concerning the country were largely inaccurate.
They were all left speechless by the magnificence of Great Zimbabwe, with many of them saying the heritage site was not being sufficiently marketed internationally.
After visiting the sky walk in Chimanimani, one buyer said Zimbabwe was a sleeping giant.
The past three editions of Sanganai-Hlanganani were held in Bulawayo at the ZITF grounds. The venue boasts excellent exhibition facilities in the country and can accommodate a large number of exhibitors.

More twists, turns to Chipinge youth stands controversy

Ashirai Mawere

Chipinge Youths Housing Scheme vice chairperson Ashirai Mawere has repeated his plea for President Emmerson Mnangagwa to intervene following the recent disruption of a public enquiry into the youth stands scandal by a mob purportedly sent by Zanu PF Manicaland provincial youth vice chairperson Dorothy Mabika.
The disruption happened on September 04 when the slobs, donning Zanu PF regalia, stormed Chipinge Country Club and disrupted proceedings.
They reportedly claimed to be working to protect Zanu PF from Mawere and other elements whom they accused of trying to destabilise the party in the province.
Many ruling party members, victims of the scandal and residents had turned up for the meeting with members of the Land Commission.
The enquiry was meant to get clarifications and evidence on the scam that involved several Zanu PF youth league members including the now deposed party provincial youth leader, Mubuso Chinguno.
The scandal saw US$400 000 meant to develop land into residential stands for several subscribers being misappropriated by Causpen Investments Pvt Ltd, a company linked to Chinguno which had been contracted to administer the project.
The commissioners were, however, reportedly prevented from hearing Mawere’s presentations after only listening to presentations by Zanu PF Manicaland youth league representative, Pedzisai Mudhende who only blamed Chinguno for the scandal.
The alleged disruptors are reported to have said Mawere could not be trusted, claiming he did not like Mnangagwa, although the victims themselves had asked him to represent them.
Speaking to this publication later on, Mawere said it was unfortunate that proceedings had been disrupted.
“We had gathered enough proof to present before the commission but we did not get a chance to speak. As soon as Mudhende finished making his biased presentation, an order was made to prevent me from speaking. A hired mob of youths in Zanu PF regalia supplied by Dorothy Mabika took to the stage shouting ‘Down with Mawere’. The commission tried to stop them but failed and the meeting was then called off and the police helped people to leave.
“The rogue mob said I was an enemy of the President and they did not want to hear my presentation yet they I am helping his commission with useful information on a serious land scam that has affected thousands of youths,” said Mawere.
He blamed Mabika for the disturbances, saying she was desperate to cover up some tracks in the whole scandal.
“They are so desperate to block the commission’s justifiable work that they can do anything but their actions have consequences,” said Mawere.
He said he will still hand over the evidence to the commission and will write to Causpen secretary, Ellen Mwale demanding to know what happened to the money.local

MDC Alliance ‘sell-out’ councillors humiliated

Collen Maboke

…Maboke ordered to step down as mayor
…Tsvangirai was ashamed of you – Chamisa tells Maboke
…Provincial chair Gumbi sucked in

Upenyu Chaota

MASVINGO – Four MDC Alliance councillors, who last week conspired to defy the party’s directive on the mayoral elections, have found themselves in serious trouble after they were made to appear before party president Nelson Chamisa and his deputy, Elias Mudzuri among other national executive heavyweights.
Party national chairperson  Morgan Komichi, deputy treasurer-general Charlton Hwende and secretary for elections Murisi Zwizwai were also part of the panel that demanded the heads of the councillors but Chamisa is said to have showed mercy but ordered Collen Maboke, who allegedly organised the palace coup, to step down.
The Masvingo councillors, led by Maboke defied party position that councillor Godfrey Kurauone was to be the mayor and went a step further by rewarding Zanu PF with a deputy mayoral post. Zanu PF helped Maboke ‘steal’ the mayoral position from Kurauone after they were promised the deputy mayoral post.
It is said that while at the Harare meeting, Chamisa fumed at the councillors for ‘selling-out’ but gave them room to explain why they did it.
Maboke is said to have begged profusely for mercy, but Chamisa and the entire hearing panel would have none of it.
When contacted for comment, Maboke confirmed that he indeed begged for mercy during the Harare meeting. He, however, tried to be diplomatic when asked by TellZim News when he was going to step down from the position of mayor as they agreed in Harare.
“Yes, that is what happened in Harare. I am waiting for a written communication so that I can step down because that is what we agreed,” said Maboke.
When pressed to comment on his telephone conference with Murisi Zwizwai and James Gumbi when he was told no written communication will be send to him, Maboke became cagey before finally saying he no longer wanted to talk to the press about it.
“Combine all the comments you are getting and write your story; I don’t want to comment to the press,” said Maboke.
Gumbi was said to be influencing Maboke not to step down from the position of mayor. The provincial chair is said to be building his support base so that he can retain the position at the party’s congress next year, therefore, having Maboke as mayor would add another strategic person to his faction.
When contacted for comment Gumbi denied the allegations saying he would not want to legitimise such hearsay.
“People are free to say whatever they want but that does not give credence to those false allegations” said Gumbi.
Political analysts, however, slammed Maboke for alleged lack of principles and power hunger, saying no amount of politicking should have involved going to bed with Zanu PF.
“Being a lawyer doesn’t mean one knows everything; no individual is bigger than the party, let alone the ‘mafikizolos’. I haven’t seen such desperation for power that one would prefer to go to bed with Zanu PF in order to get top post. It’s clear MDC Alliance has been infiltrated,” said one analyst.
A source at the meeting said Mudzuri, Hwende and Zwizwai wanted the councillors to be recalled and expelled from the party but Chamisa wanted a more lenient punishment.
“Maboke begged for his political life and Chamisa became lenient with him although the others wanted him gone for defying the party position.
“Chamisa told Maboke that the late Morgan Tsvangirai never liked him and was actually ashamed of him because he once appeared at a meeting that Tsvangirai was chairing at the party’s Masvingo provincial headquarters in Rhodene dead drunk, and then caused an embarrassing incident,” said the source.
While the meeting was progressing inside Morgan Tsvangirai House, party supporters wanted to storm the meeting and beat up all the ‘deviant’ councillors from Masvingo.
It was also revealed in the meeting that Zanu PF corrupted the whole process by dangling residential stands on Maboke, Babylon Beta, Selina Maridza and Tarusenga Vhembo in exchange for their vote in the deputy mayoral contest.
A subdued Beta is said to have shamelessly confessed that he was offered two stands by Zanu PF and he called national executive member to ask if he could accept the deal and he was given the go ahead to take it.
“Beta confessed that the plan was to isolate Richard Musekiwa, Kurauone and Daniel Mberikunashe and that he was offered two stands for his vote. He said before making any hasty decisions, he phoned one of the executive members for advice and he was told to go for it,” the source said.
Maboke was then ordered to stand down and pave way for Mberikunashe while the committees were dissolved for a fresh start and the four councillors were ordered to pay a fine of US$300 each.
“Chamisa later told Maboke that as long as the MDC was under his leadership, he will not hold any post and should be grateful that he had not been recalled and expelled,” said the source.
MDC Alliance provincial administrator, Peter Chigaba was, however, expelled from the party after it emerged that he was a kingpin in the conspiracy. The party’s Isuzu single cab pick-up truck that he used to drive around has since been taken away from him and he has been evicted from an apartment at the party’s provincial headquarters.
At the meeting, Mberikunashe was given the reigns of mayor instead of Kurauone after Vhembo told Chamisa that he had voted for Maboke because to him, there was no longer any difference between Maboke and Kurauone whom he said had seen hobnobbing with Zanu PF councillors.
“You should have seen poor Vhembo; he was kneeling on the flow and literally shaking with fear right from the knees. In his desperate attempt to save himself, he sunk Kurauone’s chances of bouncing back. After being asked to speak, Vhembo said he erred in his judgement but only because Maboke and Kurauone had become all the same to him because he had seen first-hand Kurauone lobbying Zanu PF councillors. Kurauone admitted the offence and this buried his chances of salvaging the mayorship for himself,” the source said.
Chamisa is said to then have chosen Mberikunashe because of his level headedness and that he was a more neutral compromise.
“Mai Maridza was also given a big dressing down. She was very frightened and almost comical in her quivering responses. It was a sight to see. She is now very angry with Maboke whom she accuses of selling her a poisoned chalice,” said another source.
Komichi could not answer his phone nor respond to questions sent to him on the matter but in a screenshot of a message he posted on a party WhatsApp group, he said the MDC constitution gave Chamisa the powers to appoint mayors.
“Our constitution gives power to president Chamisa to solely appoint mayors but he chose to be consultative. Let us all be guided accordingly,” the post reads.
The party’s Chegutu councillors were also summoned to answer for their own defiance of party directives although their case was not as serious as the Masvingo one.
The Chegutu councillors had been given a list of the party’s preferred mayoral candidate, right down to committee chairpersons but they defied the directive and came up with their own team.

Mwenezi man pays lobola cow, steals it away

MWENEZI – A 22-year-old Mwenezi man paid a cow to his in-laws as part of his lobola obligations but later on returned to steal the same animal, the Mwenezi Magistrate Court recently heard.
Admire Magomana of Village 4 Flora under Chief Maranda was initially facing a charge of stock theft but due to circumstances that influenced his actions, the case was later altered to unauthorised borrowing.
He pleaded guilty to the offence and was sentenced to six months behind bars or to perform 350 hours of community service as an alternative.
The State’s case was that sometime early this year; Magomana paid part of his bride price in the form of a cow to his mother-in-law, Nolance Ndambani, who resides in the same village.
It was further heard that on August 3, Magomana went to the grazing lands and drove the cow away. In reclaiming the cow, Magomana insisted that since Ndambani had taken back her daughter, whom he had been married to, he too deserved to get back his property.
A police report was filed leading to Magomana’s arrest.
The value of the beast was put at US$200.local

TellZim News

Reformed Church in Zimbabwe (RCZ) treasurer, Pikisai Mhizha was last week involved in a horrifying road traffic accident after colliding with a haulage truck at Mutangazi along the Harare-Masvingo highway.
Mhizha told TellZim News he had nobody but the good Lord to thank after surviving the heart-wrenching car crash which completely wrecked his Toyota Hilux D4D double cab.
“I am currently at home recuperating. It can only be God who saved me from the clear jaws of death that had visited me. It is after such a traumatic experience that you get to see the how fragile men’s presence on Earth is. All is indeed vanity except the word of the Lord who saved me,” said Mhizha.
The narrow yet busy road claims lives almost every day and it has on several occasions been described as a deathtrap.local

Mukungunugwa spreads solar power in Chivi

Huruva stands at one of his projects

TellZim Reporter

CHIVI – Newly-elected Chivi Ward 6 councillor, Godfrey Huruva Mukungunugwa is forging ahead with the village electrification programme he initiated long before he became councillor.
Mukungunugwa, who has since been elected Chivi Rural District Council (RDC) chairperson, has been using his own resources to install solar systems at schools in his ward.
One beneficiary of the goodwill is Maramba Primary School where teacher’s houses, the grade seven classroom block and other facilities were recently solar-powered.
Mukungunugwa has also purchased solar systems for the district councillors, such traditional leaders as Headman Madyangove and some village heads. The Mhandamabwe Police base has also been provided with similar systems as a way of improving lighting during the night.
“This is a programme I would continue working on so that all people can eventually have power in their households. We can’t wait for Zesa when we have got abundant sunlight in the district. Solar energy is cheap and renewable so people must have modern lighting during the night and they must also be able to charge their phones without hassles,” said Mukungunugwa.
To spread the service to more ordinary people, the youthful councillor has introduced a ‘pay as you go’ facility whereby villagers can have solar systems installed at their homesteads at a small deposit. They can then pay the rest of the costs at monthly installments of as little as seven dollars.
Besides the solar projects, Mukungunugwa has funded the construction of two new classroom blocks at Maramba Primary School as part of his many other efforts to improve infrastructure at public facilities so as to retain critical skills in the district.local

Zaka GMB urged to decentralise

ZAKA – The Zimbabwe Farmers Union (ZFC) Zaka district chairperson Stephen Mkachana has urged the local Grain Marketing Board (GMB) depot to open up selling points around the district so as to cushion farmers from the high transport cost of transporting their grain to Jerera.
Speaking at the Zaka Agricultural Show held at Ferry Training Centre last week, Mkachana said farmers maintaining Jerera as the only depot was bad for those in far-away places.
“As ZFU, we have observed that farmers are facing challenges delivering their produce. GMB this year failed to decentralise buying points. We are therefore urging GMB to open more selling points in wards to reduce transport costs,” said Mkachana.
He also urged farmers to adopt new farming technologies and heed advice and warnings from the Meteorological Services Department (MSD).
“We encourage farmers to adopt new farming technologies and take advice from Meteorological Services Department and our local extension staff. There is also need to diversify to livestock-oriented projects like cattle fattening and goat farming,” Mukachana said.
He lamented partisan distribution of Command Agricultural inputs, saying the practice ha led to reduced yields in the 2017/2018 season.
“We encourage the government to find proper ways to distribute farming inputs, which is the extension staff in consultation of councillors and traditional leaders. This will make our command agriculture to become a successful programme,” said Mkachana
The Jerera GMB depot has of late been in the news all for the wrong reasons related to poor service delivery and corruption allegedly by seniour management.
At the show, Seedco donated one tonne of seeds which was distributed in the form of prizes for winners.
The seed company recently launched a farming application to help farmers with farming news, weather and markets information.local

Women business fair set for Chipinge

Women in business in Chipinge district are set to benefit from a business fair that is due to be held this coming December as a way of encouraging women to unite in business.
The business fair was initiated by an all-women non-profit organisation called Bright Future Women whose Chipinge chapter shall be launched as soon as the requisite registration processes are done.
Bright Future Women director Faith Garwi, said the fair was open to all businesswomen in the district.
“Every woman who is running a business regardless of how big or small it is, needs to expose herself to the world.
“As Bright Future Women, we are adopting a completely unique business model. We shall hold a business forum discussing how best women can network and share ideas. Women tend to give each other unnecessary competition. That is wrong, networking is the best approach and people should learn to specialise rather than become jacks of all trades,” said Garwi.
Garwi, who is also the representative for the Zimbabwe Women Microfinance Bank (ZWMB) in Chipinge, said she the expo will encourage women to acquire assets.
“Women in business must acquire assets for both their businesses and for their own welfare. This is possible if we develop a culture of banking instead of squandering money,” she said.
Garwi bemoaned bad cultural practices that hinder women from being empowered.
“A lot of married women are discouraged from businesses by their marriage partners. That should be a thing of the past since a family always benefits if a mother gets involved in business,” she said.
Meanwhile, ZWMB has received a warm welcome in Chipinge urban, with a notable number of women having already opened their savings accounts.local

Musvinini irrigation, fish project benefits Chivi folk

Peter Chawapiwa

CHIVI – The Musvinini irrigation and fishery project in Ward 15 has gone a long way in improving the livelihoods and nutrition of the community, TellZim News has learnt.
The project, which was initiated and financed by Care International three years ago, is situated about 15 kilometres from Chivi growth point.
During construction of the dam, villagers benefited from the food for work programme as they were paid in kind for their labour. After completion of construction work, irrigation plots were given to villagers from a number of villages that include Takaidza, Mapaike, Zimuto, Ruzive and Bvuchete.
Once the irritation project was underway, Care International introduced different fish species in the dam to improve nutrition in the community.
One of the beneficiaries of the projects, Pisirai Ruzive said the community had already started to enjoy benefits from the dam and was grateful to Care International for providing them with a lasting solution to some of their problems.
“Chivi is a semi-arid place, meaning we generally receive below average rainfall. Our irrigation project has immensely contributed to our food reserves. Through fishing activities in the dam, we have seen the diet of the community improve considerably,” he said.
This was echoed by George Tirivanhu who added that some enterprising villagers were already taking advantage of the dam’s water to improve their income.
“We used to go fishing in Tokwe-Mukosi (ranamed Tugwi-Mukosi) but thanks to Care International, we are now doing this locally. We are, however, not happy that the dam’s committee wanted us to pay a nominal fee to fish. We protested and the fee was scrapped,” said Tirivanhu.
Tariro Sibanda said while the dam had come at the most opportune moment, the problem of the baboon population in the area had to be addressed as a matter of urgency.
“Baboons wreak havoc on our crops and I believe once in a while, we should be assisted to scare them off. We have tried everything but due to the terrain, the baboons won’t go away. All plot holders are now paying about a dollar a month as a stipend for hired labour that keeps the baboons away,” she said.
A number of crops have been put under irrigation at Musvinini Dam and when TellZim News visited the dam last week, some plot holders were busy harvesting sugar beans. This reporter was informed that the crops were consumed locally while the surplus was sold.local

Chikanyau, who is being represented by Martin Mureri of Matutu and Mureri Legal Practitioners, filed summons stating that Bhila, who is cited as the defendant in the case, breached their agreement by failing to clear US$14 000 of the US$20 000 debt.
According to the summons, Bhila and Chikanyau entered into an agreement of sale for a mobile crane on March 1, 2014 at a cost of US$20 000. The defendant paid US$6 000 and promised to swop with his Toyota Hiace worthy US$13 000 but failed bring the car forward.
