MASVINGO – The Nelson Chamisa-led Movement for Democratic Change (MDC-T) last week showed its violent side yet again when nasty factional politics played out at its provincial headquarters in Rhodene during the selection of Masvingo Urban council candidates.
When it became apparent that the process was marred by irregularities, some disgruntled party members pulled knives out of their pockets while others engaged in fist fights.
The selection of prospective councillors was supposed to be done by consensus but it all degenerated into chaos after hordes of party mobs thronged the venue even though they had no business being there.
When candidate selection is done by consensus, only the aspiring candidates the wards sit and agree on who should stand but should they fail to agree, the party would go for primaries.
Out of the 10 wards in Masvingo Urban district,  Wards 1, 2, 5, 7, 8 and 9 were decided – albeit controversially – with new names like Selina Maridza, Collen Maboke, Alex Mupfugami, Tafara Masimba and Martin Mureri coming on board for the wards respectively.
Ward 9 went back to Babylon Beta who is the sitting councillor.
Wards 3, 4, 6 and 10 were left to be decided on another day with reports that it will be done this coming Saturday, March 10.
MDC-T Masvingo district chairperson, Murangamwa Chanyau dismissed complaints about how the process was handled, saying losers are often bitter.
“We have called for consensus and it was done amicably. We looked at who has the people and that was the person went for. We will be done with all the wards by the end of the week,” said Chanyau.
Asked if they are following the party election template, Chanyau admitted the template is not always used.
“We do not follow the template blindly because what we need at the end of the day are the people. We fight from the corner of the people. If people say they want someone, then we have to go for that person regardless of what the template may say. We are guided by the template but at the end of the day, people have the final say,” said Chanyau.
MDC-T Masvingo district secretary general, Faustino Murambatsvina is said to have been assaulted when he tried to impose Mupfugami as the candidate during the selection of the Ward 5 candidate.
The plot to oust all the sitting Masvingo Urban councillors who have represented MDC-T with some remarkable distinction since 2013 has so far spared only Beta whom the faction of new comers, reportedly financed by Takanayi Mureyi, reportedly wants to use to airbrush its plot.
Mureyi, however, denied employing dirty tactics to get his own ‘boys’ as candidates and trying to capture the whole selection process.
 “At the end of the day, people talk but they have to apportion the blame onto somebody else. I do not have the power to influence people’s decisions but as a party, we follow proper candidate-selection channels.
“We first go for consensus and if that fails, we then go for primaries. I heard there was violence at the selection process which is unfortunate. All the election processes are guided by the party election template,” said Mureyi
Masvingo has for long been locked in factional wars between Mureyi and Tongai Matutu, both of whom want to represent the party as candidates for the Masvingo Urban parliamentary seat.
Mureyi is said to enjoy vast support in the party’s district and provincial structures but lacks the grassroots support that Matutu has.top news

Multi-million gas plant opens in Masvingo

Prime and Standby Power Supplies (PSPS) a wholly owned Zimbabwean company trading as Engen Mineral Road (Depot Masvingo) has partnered with British Oxygen Company ( BOC Gases) for a multi-million industrial storage site to provide Liquefied Petroleum (LP) Gas for domestic and industrial use in Masvingo province and the entire southern region.
The project is attracting an investment of over $800 000 and the company will stretch its supply to a radius of 300KM, according to its manager Samuel Makuvire.
The project, fully licensed by all authorities such as Environmental Management Agency (EMA), Masvingo City Council and Zimbabwe Energy Regulatory Authority (ZERA) will help alleviate unemployment in the province.
Makuvire also indicated that the project has a 15 tonne capacity to provide LP gas to various organisations in the province including schools and tertiary institutions.
“It has a bulk storage for wholesale and retail to schools, mines, farms, hospitals, hotels and retailers and there will be major discounts for schools,” Makuvire said.
A minimum of 100 agencies will be opened across the province to service all districts, with an average of 10 agencies per district. Makuvire said they have since started scouting the agencies across the province.
He added that their prices are affordable and that they accept any form of payment method.
“We accept all form of payment such as RTGS, EcoCash, swipe and cash to accommodate all our clients,” said Makuvire.
The company also educate its customers on safey issues when dealing with LP gases as well as handing out brochures on how to use LP gas to potential customers. They also conscientise customers to use smart energy which is more friendly to the environment.

MASVINGO – “I am satisfied,” is all that Ndarama High head Shirley Makausi could say after her school obtained a whopping 83.8 percent pass rate in the November 2017 ‘O’ level examinations.
Out of the 297 candidates that sat for the examinations at Ndarama High School, 84 emerged with five As and above.
Last year, the school recorded a 76.2 percent pass rate, meaning the pass rate has improved by almost eight percentage points, just in line with the school’s motto of beating its previous best.
When asked for a comment, Makausi was nearly at a loss for words and could simply say the community should pass its own judgement on the work that is being done at the school.
“The writing is there in the open for everyone to read. Our results speak volumes of the work we are doing. We get better each year and the sky is the limit,” said Makausi.
Ndarama High School has consistently lived up to its commitment to always improve on what it has achieved, and has become the best day school in Masvingo province in terms of both academic excellence and the quality of its learning facilities.education

Most of the pupils at Fern Valley Academy who sat for their ‘O’ level examinations last year obtained five subjects and above, with the highest achiever being Yeukai Chiwewe who got an A, 5 Bs and 3 Cs.
Seven candidates sat for their examinations at Fern Valley Academy, a private school opened two years ago and situated in the expansive new suburb of Victoria Ranch.
Besides the high flying Yeukai, other pupils who made their marks are Primrose Mawire; 3 Bs and 3 Cs, Mitchel Masendeke; 2 Bs and 4 Cs, Kuzivaishe Munodawafa; one B and 5 Cs and Mirindah Mugare; one B and 3 Cs.
Fern Valley director Tsungai Mufamba said she was pleased the school had made notable progress in the relatively short time of its existence.
“We are putting emphasis on the quality of the results we produce. Our children who sat for their examinations last year were our second exam class and they have done well to market the school as a place with quality learning methods are employed. We will work tirelessly so that more parents can see the advantages of enrolling their children with Fern Valley Academy,” said Mufamba.

As President Emmerson Mnangagwa takes his ‘Zimbabwe is Open for Business’ mantra to the world, the Minister of State for Masvingo Provincial Affairs, Josaya Hungwe is leading efforts to re-brand the province by opening new avenues of investment with a special emphasis on tourism.
Hungwe is convinced Masvingo has a lot of untapped potential and that if marketed properly, huge economic spin-offs will be achieved.
“Masvingo has a lot of potential and just like the President is saying the country is open for business, we say Masvingo is open for business as well.
“We want people from Masvingo and outside to come and invest their money because we have a many areas that have to be explored,” said Hungwe.
Hungwe said Masvingo had a lot resources and yet it remains under-developed because the potential has not been fully explored.
“The whole southern region of the country is a development region and we need to harness that potential and make sure the world knows about us.
“We may not be able to reach out to everyone but the media in Masvingo should help magnify our voice. We want people to come with their money and invest. We have the giant Tokwe Mukosi Dam which is open for people with money and ideas to start investment projects that can attract tourists.
“We have sugar cane production in the Lowveld. We have the Great Zimbabwe monuments. We have the Save Valley conservancy. We have coal and gold deposits. We have a rare mineral, Lithium in Bikita and all these are investment areas,” said Hungwe.
He said the Runde Tende dam site in Chivi, if developed, would be larger than Tokwe Mukosi.
“We have people we know who have money and we want to help them grow their money in the province. We want people like Clever Pote, Killer Zivhu and Graham Richards among others to bring their money and invest in various other areas,” said Hungwe.

Everyone is running with ED now, and just like Mussolini, ED is always right. No one from Zanu PF still wants to be associated with Mugabe; they describe him as the worst ever dictator in Africa but not so long ago he was the darling of almost everyone is Zanu PF. It’s very simple – people always pay allegiance to where power is, and Mugabe rangova zuru rakapinda nyoka.
Uncle Bob, don’t waste your time telling us that ED usurped power from you – we all know that and we don’t care. We could be in a different economic situation if you had allowed Tsvangirai to rule this country in 2008.
Of course, we will not allow ED to ruin this country, especially after these useless 100 days. Of course there is no fairness because Mnangagwa and wife are dominating ZTV while Chamisa and other opposition leaders is not given any chance to speak.

MUTARE – Zanu PF Manicaland provincial chairperson, Mike Madiro has expressed concern over opposition parties’ activities in the province that he said would cost the ruling party dearly if left unchecked.
Madiro briefed Zanu PF national chairperson, Oppah Muchinguri-Kashiri on the state of the party in the province during a party meeting held at Mutare Poly last week.
He emphasised that the party needed to pull up its socks if it was to stay in the game after the upcoming elections.
He sounded the alarm saying opposition parties had already started campaigning in the province, warning that Zanu PF must never underestimate its rivals.
“Opposition parties have started their activities in the province; Mujuru, MDC Alliance and this new outfit ZIPP. They are already distributing their regalia and the people have been accepting them all.
“People have been accepting the regalia not because they like those parties but simply because they want clothes. It is our plea to the party that our own regalia comes now because we are running out of time,” said Madiro.
He, however, downplayed the opposition’s ability to break new ground, saying only Zanu PF would be its own biggest enemy if it remained divided.
“In terms of average attendance when they hold public meetings, I would say 200 people attend but in terms of penetration, the opposition is in disarray. We could be our own enemy because we are not united,” said Madiro.
His estimates, however, contrast sharply with the attendance at the recently-held MDC Alliance rally which attracted close to 3000 people at Sakubva Stadium.
Zanu PF is hoping to claim the three constituencies which were taken by MDC-T during the 2013 elections. These are Innocent Gonese’s Mutare Central, Trevor Saruwaka’s Mutasa Central and Prosper Mutseyami’s Mudavanhu.local

MASVINGO – Shamiso Tavaruva, a daughter to erstwhile successful passenger transport businessman Tanda Tavaruva, of Mhunga Bus Services, is in trouble with the law after she allegedly ganged up with one Donald Manenji to assault their friend’s ex-husband.
The incident reportedly happened at Chesvingo business centre, popularly known as Sisk, on Wednesday, February 21.
The case was reported to Chikato Police Station and is pending before the courts of law.
Sources said Shamiso and Manenji approached Zivanai Chikwanda at the business centre and started to accuse him of ill-treating his ex-wife Ruth Maregwede.
Manenji is a soldier and he works in the military ward at Masvingo Provincial Hospital.
Maregwede is apparently friends with Shamiso and Manenji, and she reportedly drinks with them at the business centre on occasional basis.
The pair allegedly started beating Chikwanda in the face using fists, and were reportedly joined in the brutal assault by Maregwede who was close by.
Chikwanda, who reportedly suffered severe face injuries and became unconscious for a while, was then forced into the boot of a car and driven to Chikato Police Station.
At the police station, Shamiso and Manenji reported that they had found Chikwanda beating his ex-wife and had restrained him.
Chikwanda was then arrested and he spent two nights in police cells but the case could not be heard in court because the victim’s medical affidavit contained gross errors of omission.
Manenji reportedly prepared the affidavit but did not append his name on it as he is not a medical doctor.
It was then recommended that the case proceed by way of summons with Chikwanda taking the opportunity to file his own assault counter report against his alleged attackers.local

MWENEZI – More than 200 Zanu PF election agents who were deployed at various polling stations during last year’s Mwenezi East by-elections have come out guns blazing against their party which they accuse of failing to honour its promise to pay them allowances.
This emerged at a Zanu PF meeting held at Rutenga Primary School last Saturday.
Directing their questions to district party members who are in provincial structures, the agents lashed out at the party leadership for making false promises.
“When (former Zanu PF secretary for administration Ignatius) Chombo addressed us at Avhunga Secondary School before the by-elections, he promised that funds for election agents were going to be disbursed but up to now, nothing has materialised.
“We were later told that there was no money and that we would receive payment in form of rice, but that has not even happened. We are now a few months before another election and you want the services of the same people whom you have failed to honour in your previous promises. We cannot operate like that,” fumed one agent.
Although the leadership proposed to forward the grievances to the responsible authorities in the party, Mwenezi East Member of Parliament (MP) Joosbi Omar, who was also present, made a commitment to use his own resources to pay what is owed if needs be.
The meeting was meant to mobilise support ahead of the harmonised elections and was also attended by Mwenezi West MP, Lamson Matavire, district members from the Provincial Coordinating Committee (PCC), Rennias Muchoko, Pricilla Moyo-Zindari and Gift Mazhambe.local

Gutu Rural District Council (RDC) and the National Railway Zimbabwe (NRZ) are engaged in a vicious fight over ownership of 23 largely derelict houses situated in Rubwerumwe residential area in Chatsworth, TellZim News has learnt.
Sources who spoke to TellZim News said Gutu RDC made a resolution sometime in 2016 to sell the houses to tenants who had been renting them for a period of 10 years or more.
“Gutu RDC sold these houses to us but NRZ now claims that the houses belong to them. They have issued us with eviction orders and confiscation of property letters if we fail to pay what they claim to be rental arrears owed to them. We don’t know who the legitimate owner is anymore and we don’t know who to give the money,” a source said.
NRZ recently wrote to occupants of the houses advising them that they must pay up all the money that they owed lest they be evicted.
“Please be advised that you have an outstanding rent arrears amount which is due to this Admin (NRZ). Kindly arrange to remit the amount on or before 28 February, or else we will have no option but to evict you,” reads part of one of the letters.
Another source said the occupants were now confused as they were now caught between two rival bosses both of whom were claiming legitimate rights to the money that is owed.
“The houses were built many decades ago by what used to be the Rhodesian Railways and were inherited by NRZ. We don’t know how the council got involved to the level of taking ownership of the houses and selling them to tenants. Whatever it is, the deal was bad as evidenced by these quarrels,” said the source.
Others said the affected tenants organised a meeting with the two parties sometime back but NRZ representatives failed to show up.
Gutu RDC chief executive officer (CEO) Alexander Mutembwa said the matter needed to be resolved in courts, claiming that the local authority was the legitimate owner.
“The issue needs to be resolved before the courts. Those are our stands but NRZ claims to own them. We have been the owners ever since the amalgamation of 1994 when the Chatsworth RDC was dissolved and merged with Gutu. Occupants are not paying rentals to us and that is where the problem is,” Mutembwa said.
NRZ Chatsworth station manager, Elias Jerera confirmed that there was indeed a dispute with Gutu RDC but refused to reveal further details, referring TellZim News to the estates section of their Bulawayo railways office which was unreachable by the time of going to press.
The houses in question are old, with their ablution systems reportedly broken down. The walls are in urgent need of renovation and the roofs are leaky.local
