MASVINGO – A drunk 16-year-old girl of Village 5 Uswaushava, Chiredzi, was ploughed down to death by a vehicle at the 61 km peg along Ngundu – Tanganda Road on January 2, at around 12 midnight.
The unusually named Trevor Ngorima left the homestead for Uswaushava business centre where she took alcohol in the company of other three juveniles.
The four then left the business centre at around midnight on their way home but Trevor, in her drunken stupor reportedly sat in the middle of the road.
An unidentified vehicle then came and ploughed into her, leading to the girl’s death on the spot.
Provincial Police Spokesperson, Inspector Charity Mazula confirmed the incident and urged parents to look after their children.
“Parents should monitor and make sure that children below the age of 18 do not drink alcohol. Even bar owners should desist from selling alcohol to children below the age of 18,” Insp Mazula.
On the same day, two men were also crushed by a train while sleeping on a railway track along the Mbizi – Chiredzi railway line in Triangle.
Before Bhidiri (21) of Village 1, Basi and Paison Chikwanya (24) of Village 6, Chahoba in Triangle met at Muzhu rail hold to board a train to Rutenga on their way to South Africa.
The two reportedly fell asleep on the rail line while waiting for the train. Fanuel Mutakwa, the engine man with the locomotive, hooted loudly but when he managed to stop, the two were already crushed.
Inspector Mazula also said under no circumstance should people sleep on the roads or railway lines as those were dangerous areas.local

Chipinge: A hotspot for gender-based violence

TellZim Reporter

Chipinge has been identified as a hotspot for gender based violence (GBV) as well as early child marriages due to the district’s peculiar cultural practices.
The remark was made recently at the official launch of Culture Actions: Gender-based Violence, Early Child Marriages and Climate Change Programme in Hanganya village in Ward 8.
The programme is a brainchild of various organisations that include Diocese of Mutare Community Care Programme (DOMCCP), Culture Fund of Zimbabwe Trust and other organisations.
Speaking at the official launch, Culture Fund of Zimbabwe Trust executive director, Farai Mpfunya said they chose to launch the programme in Chipinge because of certain cultural practices that make it a gender-based violence hotspot.
“We targeted Chipinge because there are certain traditions and practices that are peculiar and these make it an area where gender-based violence is likely to occur.
“Issues to do with climate change such as floods also make it a likely hotspot for early child marriages and gender-based violence.
“We were also drawn to work in Chipinge because we were invited by our partners in this region who are willing to co-ordinate and deal with issues of gender-based violence and early child marriages,” Mpfunya said.
Speaking at the launch, DOMCCP Chipinge project officer Ronald Chihana said there were many factors to do with climate change and environmental issues that are leading to gender-based violence.
“The Culture Actions Programme targets three thematic areas that are gender-based violence, early child marriages and climate change because they are interlinked.
“There are many factors on climate change and environmental issues that are instigating gender-based violence.
“If there is hunger caused by lack of rains, men would go out to look for jobs and women are left home.
“This can lead to economic abuse because the man knows that he is the one who is working and women are left as dependents.
“This scenario can also lead to physical abuse in terms of labour where women are left work in fields yet men are elsewhere,” Chihana said.local

Chiredzi Town chair to contest Chiredzi West

Francis Moyo

CHIREDZI – Town Council chairperson Francis Moyo has made clear his intentions to contest the Chiredzi West parliamentary seat which is currently held by Darlington Chiwa who is under severe pressure for his connections to the defeated G40 faction.
Former Tongaat Hullet agriculture director Farai Musikavanhu has also indicated his desire to take the seat on a Zanu PF ticket come election time.
Other people who are jostling for the same seat include Samson Makonese, Titus Maluleke and Norman Sharara.
When G40 had gained the upper hand in the days leading to the military intervention codenamed ‘Operation Restore Legacy’ in November last year, Moyo found himself on the back foot and he escaped expulsion by a whisker.
Moyo, who was allegedly aligned to the rival Team Lacoste, said he was ready to leave his current position as Ward 4 councillor.
“I have made up my mind now and I am joining the legislative race. I am arranging for a ward meeting with my party leaders in order to inform them of the new developments,” said Moyo.local

Fidze slams corruption at charity institutions

Cllr Hubert Fidze

Brighton Chiseva

MASVINGO – City of Masvingo mayor, Cllr Hubert Fidze has expressed outrage at reports of abuse of resources allocated to old people’s homes, children’s homes and other charities benefitting from the Mayor’s Christmas Cheer Fund.
He made the remarks during the handover ceremony of proceeds of the 2016 Mayor’s Christmas Cheer Fund at Civic Centre two weeks ago.
The mayor said he heard disturbing news about officials at the receiving institutions diverting the donated groceries and money to their own personal use.
“There are stories which I’m hearing at the places where we are giving these goods. I am sorry, but I am coming there. I heard very disturbing news concerning some of you. If we give you, go and give the goods to the rightful people.
“We have our elderly, the disabled and the blind. For they do not see, you put the goods behind. We have children and these goods belong to them so do not give them left overs,” said Fidze.
He said corruption by those in charge of charity institutions will not be tolerated, with resources now getting scarcer in the difficult economy which has seen less people contributing to the fund.
“This list I have this year is not the usual list. We have reduced it by almost 60 percent from what we used to give and the list corresponds to what we have,” said Fidze.
The fund is a customary fundraising initiative which is designed to mobilise resources that are then distributed to the elderly, the poor, as well as disabled and disadvantaged children towards Christmas time.
This year, the fund raised US$7 652 which was donated to such charities as Copota School for the Blind, Alpha Cottages children’s home, Zimbabwe Association for the Visually Handicapped, Pioneer Trust, Masvingo General Hospital and Mucheke Old People’s Home among others.local

Milestone Group of Schools’ distinctive approach to education, a recipe for success

Milestone Group of Schools has introduced a new approach to learning which focuses not exclusively on the ‘naturally intelligent’ pupils but extends the passion to even the ‘not so bright’ that other schools love to ignore.
Soon after the announcement of grade seven results, parents move from one town to another and from this school to the other in search of form 1 places for their children.
Experience shows that places at most reputable schools are to be secured first by those with 5 units (4 units before the introduction of agriculture as an examinable subject at grade seven). Those who did not perform to that level are regarded as a second option with a narrower chance of securing places.
This is however not the way of doing things at Milestone.
Located in Rusape, 43 km along Nyanga Road, Milestone is a Group A boarding school. Its proprietor is Molly Mfunya who wants to let parents know that their children can do better. She wants to defy the common practice of admitting only the 5 – 6 units cream by accepting those pupils with even 27 units.
This, she says, will be followed by the requisite nurturing of the pupils to produce out of them the desired results.
Mfunya believes every child has a capacity to learn and can do better if he or she is given enough attention and time.
Being a professionally qualified teacher, she believes that children should not be underestimated because each has distinctive potential and capabilities. All teachers at the school are challenged to develop the abilities of every child and to know how to nurture different forms of potential.
The school was registered to offer Zimsec and Cambridge exams from grade seven up to ‘A’ level. ECD classes are also available in the most enabling environment.
The school offers all sporting disciplines to complement the top notch leaning facilities available. This reporter visited the school and found primary pupils competing in a golf tournament at Montclair, fulfilling Mfunya’s desire to mould a child who excels in class, sports or in both.
Milestone Group of Schools is a member of Zimbabwe National Chamber Of Commerce (ZNCC) and Mfunya was recently named business woman of the year 2016 – 2017 first runner up for Manicaland province.
“Don’t hesitate to bring your child to Milestone no matter the results. We will work our hearts out to make sure that he or she produces the results that make you the parent proud. Good results should be a challenge to the teacher.
“Can we really call ourselves good teachers if we take only ‘good’ children? Is it not our job to produce the results we desire out of those who might not be naturally intelligent? Let us measure our capabilities with the number of the so-called slow learners that we help to become successful” said Mfunya.education

My position on ECD was misunderstood, says Mavima

Professor Paul Mavima

The Minister of Primary and Secondary Education, Professor Paul Mavima has been on the receiving end of the wrath from teachers’ unions after it was reported that he had said government was no longer footing the Early Childhood Development (ECD) teachers’ salary bill.
He has however come out defending his position which he said was misunderstood by the people.
It was recently reported that Prof Mavima wanted schools offering ECD to pay their teachers themselves as he claimed that the government could no longer afford.
“People have misunderstood the government’s position on ECD teachers. We never said the government was surrendering the responsibility of ECD teachers to schools but that the government has halted the recruitment of more such teachers.
“We are in need of more than 6 000 ECD teachers but in the 2018 budget, that is not catered for. That is why we said those schools who feel the need to employ more ECD teachers at their own expense can do so. The government will be taking care only of those who are already in the system,” said Prof Mavima.
He said schools will continue to offer ECD both A and B.
“The Finance minister said if the fiscal situation improves, we will then be able to recruit more teachers and pay them. We are currently making an assessment of how many schools have the capacity to employ their own ECD teachers.
“We are still committed to the nine years of primary education,” said Prof Mavima.education

TellZim Reporter

Edrrovale College, undoubtedly the most prestigious of all high schools in Masvingo province and probably the most magnificent in the whole country, commemorates its first anniversary with a wide range of new packages for its students.
Situated some 18km from town, a distance negligible enough to keep one close to the conveniences of the city yet long enough to keep them away from the annoying bustles of the same, Edrrovale College is the ultimate dream for the parent most concerned with the best learning conditions for his child.
The school has got into 2018 with an all inclusive package for its day scholars.
The generous package covers a daily transport service by school bus to and from Edrrovale College as well as midmorning and afternoon teas/refreshments and sandwiches. As if that is not enough, all day scholars enjoy a dietician-approved lunch.
Enrolling a child with Edrrovale College therefore means that parents would need not worry about where to get pocket money/lunch for their child. It also means a substantial cut back on transport costs as that is covered by the school’s shuttle service.
For US$1 200 per term for day scholars, no other school offers services of that nature at such a reasonable cost. What that means therefore is that Edrrovale College has already carved for itself an identity as a place which guarantees quality education accompanied by a wholesome provision of the childs physiological needs, all under a welcoming environment.
For $2,500 fulltime boarders get a complete package of services that give them room to enjoy a home away from home; partaking their studies in neat classrooms and taking their rest in rooms that are equipped with unmatched comfort.
To achieve a complete nurturing of body and mind, the students undertake sporting activities giving each child a chance to excel in any extra-curricular activity of his/her choice; be it golf, tennis, cricket, football, netball, basketball, rugby etc.
The state of the art 65 seater Eddrovale College bus picks up day scholars at the 7 Hellet Street at 06:30hrs and drops them off in the evening at the same point at 17: 00hrs.education

CHIREDZI – There was excitement and spectacle in town recently when Mamak Pre-School hired the Zimbabwe National Army (ZNA) 4 Brigade brass band to perform at the elementary school’s fifth graduation ceremony.
The well-drilled, Masvingo-based military band attracted a large crowd of excited members of the public who came either to witness the graduation of their children or to enjoy the melodious beats of the band.
A spectacular 5km march along West Road was held with people eager to walk alongside members of the military, a fashionable treat considering recent development in the country.
ZNA 4 Brigade music director of music Simon Munsaka took the lead in demonstrating the exceptional entertainment capabilities of the band.
People present praised Mamak Pre-School for continuing to make a big difference in the primary education sector of Chiredzi by producing highly capable pupils who fit into any primary school.
“Mamak remains second to none other pre-school in Chiredzi. The children who come out of this pre-school are the best,” said Shingai Primary School head Isaac Tamuka.
Another resident Simon Gutsa was pleased with the entertainment galore, saying the pre-school should continue its impressive work which he said had made it the elementary school of choice.
“I am impressed by both the presence of the band and the conduct of the children. The children are well-taught as evidenced by their excellent poetry skills as well as their mastery of other performances they staged in front of the people,” said Gutsa.education

Zanu PF wants 90% of registered voters

Rtd Lt Gen Engelbert Rugeje

Zanu PF has set its sights on the targeted 800 000 registrants through the Biometric Voter Registration (BVR) in Masvingo province, saying it wants 90 percent of the voters and will leave nothing to chance in the quest to achieve the goal in elections scheduled for this year.
The Zimbabwe electoral Commission (Zec) targets to register at least 800 000 voters in Masvingo province by the time the exercise closes in February.
Zanu PF Masvingo provincial chairperson Ezra Chadzamira said 90 percent of the registrants in Masvingo should vote for the ruling party.
“We want a resounding victory just like we did in 2013. All the 26 parliamentary seats should be retained by Zanu PF and we will deliver on that.
“President Mnangagwa is our candidate and we need to make sure that we get the votes of the 90 percent of the registrants in Masvingo province,” said Chadzamira.
He praised the appointment of Rtd Lt Gen Engelbert Rugeje as national political commissar, saying the former military man was a good strategist.
“Gen Rugeje has been very instrumental in bringing the 26 seats to Zanu PF in 2013. With him leading the commissariat, it will be an easy victory. We need all the votes so that the opposition will see no need to exist,” said Chadzamira.politics
