Ministry of Local Government appoints new CEO for Bikita RDC

By Staff Reporter

The Minister of Local Government and Public Works Daniel Garwe has appointed a new Chief Executive Officer (CEO) for Bikita Rural District Council (RDC).

In a letter seen by TellZim News dated January 2, 2025, directed to the Council Chairperson, the Minister approved the appointment of Chibi RDC Human Resources and Admin officer Archibald Ncube as the new Bikita RDC CEO.

“I have approved the appointment of Ncube with the effect from the date of appointment as the substantive CEO for Bikita RDC in terms Section 66 (1) of the Rural District Councils Act chapter [29: 13]. In the event that he declines, the offer should be extended to Savory Chikomwe and should all of them fail to fill the vacant post for some reasons, the post should be re-advertised,” reads the letter.

However, both the council Chairperson Thomas Mataga and Ncube could not confirm the appointment as both their cell numbers were unreachable by time of writing.

Masvingo Permanent Secretary for Provincial Affairs and Devolution Dr Addmore Pazvakavambwa confirmed the development.

“I can confirm the appointment, I received the communication,” said Dr Pazvakavambwa

Arnold Mtuke was the acting CEO since the death of former CEO Peter Chibi who committed suicide in March 2024.

The appointment is expected to bring sanity to the district which had seen little to no development for a couple of years now following allegations of abuse of office among other scandals involving the late CEO.

…….victim seizes gun from assailants, fire blank shots

By Virginia Njovo

A group of robbers got more than what they bargained for when one of their victims seized an opportunity to grab a gun left on the table firing it in the air sending the attackers running for dear life.

The incident happened on January 16 at Madzivanyika High School in Masvingo South when the suspects tried to rob the school and the school head’s son’s quick thinking helped foil the robbery.

Masvingo Provincial Police Spokesperson Inspector Kudakwashe Dhewa confirmed the incident to TellZim News and advised the general public to keep money in safe places like banks which are secure.

“I can confirm an incident of attempted robbery at Madzivanyika High School on January 16. Investigations are ongoing and I want to urge members of the public and business community to keep money and valuables in safer places such as banks,” said Inspector Dhewa.

Sources told TellZim News that on January 16, two unidentified robbers came by the Madzivanyika High teachers’ living quarters pretending to be looking for a teacher who was no longer teaching at the school.

The two assailants came back the same day around 2000 hrs and went to the school head’s house where they found his two sons cooking supper, forced them to lie down at gunpoint asking for their father’ whereabouts  whom they said he would come back after a while.

The head Fredrick Mazarire came back to find his sons on the ground with robbers pointing a gun at them.

He was forced him to lie down while they demanded the school safe keys which he said were not on him at the moment.

The robbers collected cell phones and other valuables but another cell phone rang in another room, and one of the robbers placed his pistol on the table and headed towards the bedroom where the sound was coming from.

In a movie style, one of the head’s sons sprang up and took the gun and fired two shots towards the robber who then fled into the dark since the gun was loaded with blank rounds

The other robber whom they had taken hostage also fled leaving one of the victims holding onto his jacket.

FC Wangu Mazodze reappoints former coach

By Tatiana Mhararira

FC Wangu Mazodze has rehired George Magariro as their head coach, replacing John Nyikadzino who had taken over the reins after Magariro’s left the club.

Magariro will be at the helm of the club during the 2025 Eastern Region Soccer League Division One season.

He served FC Wangu Mazodze in the 2023 Division One season and was hired again to coach for Mazodze which failed to qualify for the Premier Soccer League in 2024 with hopes that he will take the team to greater heights.

FC Wangu Mazodze spokesperson, Blessing Kwesha confirmed the development to TellZim News and said the team reappointed Magariro after Nyikadzino failed to renew his contract.

“We have reappointed Magariro as the new head coach replacing Nyikadzino who did not sign to be part of the team this season so we parted ways in an amicable way.

“It was easy to take Magariro back since he left the team in good fortune which is a lesson to all other coaches out there that football goes round and round so it’s good to keep those relations when moving to other teams,” said Kwesha.

Kwesha said Magariro was a suitable coach expressing confidence in him to take the team to the next level.

“Our target is nothing short of Premier Soccer League (PSL). Magariro is someone who knows what we want as a club, that is a PSL promotion and trials are underway so that he chooses the best players that he wants to work with that will give best results,” said Kwesha.

Kwesha added that fans, sponsors and stakeholders welcomed Magariro with new hope though some still had doubts.

“Our fans were happy to have Magariro back, we had an event at Mucheke hall where we unveiled the coach with the belief that he still has unfinished business in the club to deliver best football though some of our supporters still have doubts. I want to assure them that the club is in safe hands.

“Our sponsors are not sure if we made a right decision but I want to give them assurance that we are in the right direction since we started three seasons ago. At first we finished the season at number seven followed by number three and last season at number two, which means this time is our time,” said Kwesha.

Magariro, who previously played for the Zimbabwe national team, Dynamos and Masvingo United FC (Una Una) coached FC Wangu Mazodze and went to Una Una, which led to some of the players from Mazodze joining him at Masvingo United FC.

FC Wangu Mazodze has already begun the next season’s preparations as trials were run from January 13-19, 2025 with hopes to create a strong team and also get new players who will assist the team in getting the PSL promotion which they have a history of losing chances during the final matches.

Mazodze lost the promotion into PSL after drawing with Renco Mine FC on the final match and last season (2023) they lost the promotion on goal difference to Triangle FC.

India’s Edoofa Scholarship programme comes to Masvingo

By Tatiana Mhararira

As learners from across the country are flocking to universities out of the country like Zambia, United Kingdom (UK), India among others, learners from Masvingo recently benefited from a career guidance programme courtesy of India’s Edoofa Scholarship programme which aims to empower students to make informed decisions in choosing career paths.

The learners got the unique opportunity to learn about their career aspirations and how they can take advantage of the programme to study in India on January 21, 2025 at Masvingo Christian College.

Hundreds of learners from schools like host school Masvingo Christian College, Gutu High, Ndarama High, Dewure High and Chibuwe High schools were guided on how they could take advantage of the programme that takes students from across the globe.

Edoofa is a an international work study programme which is based in India and so far it has over six thousands beneficiaries who were taken from countries in Africa such as Malawi, South Africa, Zambia and Zimbabwe.

In an interview with TellZim News, Edoofa Founder and Chief Executive Officer Angad Singh said Edoofa offered a number of benefits and opportunities for local students to study in India.

“The Edoofa program is there to alleviate lack of funding and expensive cost of education, problems which learners go through, so we provide learning opportunities with affordable fees as we work with universities reduce the cost to accommodate them.

“The most important part of our program is that we have the work-while-you-learn programme, where students get an opportunity to work while learning. Learners get jobs and businesses throughout their college life through attachment and internships.

“Students are also offered scholarship credits whenever they work which further reduces the burden of tuition fees as they can pay for their school fees especially those on 50 percent scholarship,” said Singh.

Singh said the Edoofa team was glad to engage with learners from across Masvingo province saying previously they used to work with Harare and Bulawayo Provinces only.

“As the Edoofa team we were happy to be in Masvingo province particularly being hosted by Masvingo Christian College where we received a huge turnout with some learners showing interest in the programme. We have always been in Harare and Bulawayo but our journey to Masvingo was one of the best,” said Singh.

Addressing learners, Masvingo Christian School Head and Edoofa Zimbabwe Ambassador Dr Edson Muresherwa said learners should grab the opportunity and use it wisely for their benefit in different careers of their choice.

“I am happy the Edoofa team is coming here with the information that they are taking scholars to study in India. I see a lot of sense in it because they are not giving you fish but rather they are teaching you how to fish so that we will eat fish for the rest of your lives. As you go to study there, harvest knowledge and skills that side, bring them this side and become specialists in various fields of your choice,” said Dr Muresherwa.

Bikita Schools Inspector and Edoofa Zimbabwe Ambassador Aleta Makomeke also encouraged learners to study abroad as they work towards the achievement of the national vision.

“I encourage those who are going to India to take programmes that will facilitate the attainment of Vision 2030 which entails making Zimbabwe an upper-middle income by 2030. We want a powerful workforce and it is the quality of that workforce which determines the quality of development in Zimbabwe.

“As learners, after studying in India and you feel that you are well resourced academically, intellectually and even materially come home and invest in your mother country so that one day the Indians will come to Zimbabwe for medical attention as we will be rich with experts in the field,” said Makomeke.

Chibuwe High school learner Never Sithole said he was interested in the Edoofa scholarship programme as it offers job opportunities.

“I have interests in the programme because for every student going to university the aim is to get a degree but Edoofa indicated that they also offer opportunities for employment,” said Sithole.

Besides offering job opportunities the Edoofa program is linked with world accredited universities, offers academic flexibility, dedicated student welfare and assured employability. Every year a number of students from Zimbabwe are offered 50 percent (half cover on tuition fee) and 100 percent (full cover) scholarships to study abroad.

Vision Academy, a private owned school located in the heart of Mucheke Surbub in Masvingo defined excellence as it achieved 100 % pass rate in the November 2024, Zimbabwe School Examinations Council (Zimsec) Advanced level exams.

The best learner scooped 15 points followed by another one with 14 points. The least performer got 6 points which demonstrated commitment between learners and staff.

Vision Academy Director and Masvingo South Member of Parliament, Tanatsiwa Mukomberi applauded learners and their teachers for the work which brought the good results.

“We are improving every year as witnessed by the quality of results. Last year we also had 100percent but they were a bit lower than this year’s because the majority of our learners got 10 points and above and a few are between six points to 10,” said Mukomberi.

“We are now appealing for information that may lead to the arrest of the outstanding suspect Derldreneds Davison Siyafa Moyo,” read the statement.

During the period extending from August 2024 to January 8, 2025 the accused went on a robbing spree along the Beitbridge-Masvingo Road targeting motorists.

In one of the cases that occurred on January 8 at around 0230hours, they pounced on the complainants whose motor vehicle had developed a tyre burst. They stabbed the two complainants with an okapi knife before robbing them of their cash and other valuables.

Women advocate for equal opportunities in agriculture

By Staff Reporter

Residents in Masvingo have called on the government to address inequalities in critical agricultural sectors amid accusations of government prioritizing men with political influence in sugarcane farming.

These grievances were raised during a People’s Assembly meeting organized by the Fighting Inequality Alliance Zimbabwe (FIA) Chapter on January 18 at a local church in Masvingo, under the global theme ‘Draw the Red Line Against Inequality’.

One of the attendees, Sungano Zvarebganashe, voiced concerns about the dominance of men in sugarcane farming lamenting the lack of opportunities for women and lack of opportunities for locals in mining where the rich and foreign nationals get preference.

“There are fewer women in agricultural sectors, such as sugarcane farming, which is dominated by men. This hinders women’s progress.

“The mining field is also dominated by foreign nationals in our areas, and people in the mining communities have no chance despite having the desire to. Foreigners have access to mining claims and even end up polluting our water under our watch. Claims are often given to the super-rich, leaving out locals who might have an interest in mining,” said Zvarebganashe.

Participants also criticized the government for imposing heavy taxes on goods, which they said disproportionately affect poor consumers. They called for the taxation of business owners and wealthy individuals to ease the burden on ordinary citizens.

“It is only the poor that bear the burden of heavy taxation from the government. When heavy taxes are introduced, consumers end up paying higher prices for goods. Business owners should also be taxed to share this burden,” said one participant.

Another participant, David Vurayayi called for government to ensure equality in the health department by providing adequate funding for procuring medical supplies for public hospital pharmacies.

“One person is capable of owning many pharmacies across the country with adequate supplies yet provincial hospitals are in lack of adequate supplies. Our pharmacies should provide cheap medical supplies which will benefit both hospitals and the public,” said Vurayayi.

Locals also called for a reduction in taxes for civil servants whose meagre salaries are already a cause for concern.

The event, part of the global movement, aimed to challenge billionaire greed and demand real solutions to economic disparities.

FIA mobilized the gatherings to pressurize governments to prioritize the general public which is less privileged through making investments in critical sectors such as education, healthcare housing and addressing climate issues. Taxing the super-rich is one of the organization’s solutions to providing equality.
