MDC- T warns ED against factional arrests

MUTARE – The opposition MDC-T has urged President Emmerson Mnangagwa to desist from ‘factional arrests’ that have seen only members of the defeated G40 faction, real or perceived, being arrested or ostracised under the just-ended Operation Restore Legacy.
Speaking to TellZim News, MDC-T Manicaland provincial spokesperson Trevor Saruwaka said the fight against corruption should not only be done along factional lines but should be objective.
“It is good that the President and the army were sweeping away corrupt elements from government but this should not be done for factional reasons. We feel that more can still be done to bring to book corrupt elements that have made it into the new cabinet.
The sentiments come after the arrest of former Finance minister Ignatius Chombo for crimes allegedly committed during his tenure as Local Government minister and former Zanu PF national youth secretary Kudzai Chipanga.
Saruwaka also questioned the manner by which Meikles Park was awarded to an Esau Mupfumi, saying the deal was opaque and left a lot to be desired.
“Corruption has been happening and I wonder how a place at the middle of the Central Business District (CBD) was given to one individual under unclear circumstances. The place was supposed to benefit everyone in the town.
The Meikles Park was a favourite spot for vending activities, church events and demonstrations but it now belongs to Mupfumi who has indicated that he wants to build a shopping mall and hotel on the land.top news

…West, Wart roads to be tarred

Beatific Gumbwanda

CHIREDZI – The Zimbabwe National Road Administration (Zinara), which has already availed US$500 000 to Chiredzi Town Council for road resurfacing, will disburse more funds for the installation of traffic lights and tarring of some roads in Tshovani, TellZim News has learnt.
West and Warth are some of the roads that have been earmarked for surfacing in addition to others that are already undergoing a facelift in the CBD and the low density suburbs.
Zinara availed half a million for resurfacing 13 km of roads as part of its first phase disbursement to the town council for year 2017.
In 2015, there were speculations that the council had found a development partner to upgrade West Road but the deal succumbed to political machinations.
Town engineer, Wesley Kauma said the second phase disbursement will be used to set up traffic lights as well as to surface key roads in Tshovani.
“Resurfacing of roads in the CBD and some parts of the low density suburbs is almost complete. Zinara will provide funds for the second phase and the process of inviting tenders will commence in January 2018.
“The second phase targets such roads as West, Warth and Chitsanga. West Road will be tarred from Shingai to Lyonnais while Warth will end at Chiredzi Poly Clinic.
“We will also construct robots along Inyathi Road as part of projects to be covered by the second phase,” said Kauma.
Council chairperson, Francis Moyo said they resurfacing of roads was going on well.
“As you can see, resurfacing of roads is going on very well and we are looking forward to the next phase,” said Moyo.local

MASVINGO – Zimbabwe’s leading retailer OK Zimbabwe Masvingo branch has donated U$700 worth of groceries towards the Mayor’s Christmas Cheer Fund.
The fund is activated towards the festive season every year to raise money and goodies for distribution to the less privileged members of society.
OK Masvingo branch manager Shepherd Mahiya said his organisation understands the importance of ploughing back to the community.
“We know there is need to lend a hand to the underprivileged and as OK Zimbabwe, we help with what we can. We always contribute to the Mayor’s Christmas Cheer Fund and this year, we have donated $700 worth of groceries,” said Mahiya.
City of Masvingo mayor, Hubert Fidze said the donation will go a long way in ensuring that the less fortunate have something to smile about this festive season.
“OK Zimbabwe Masvingo has always been very supportive of this initiative. This year’s cheer fund has been on the low because of economic hardships and the contributions we got are fewer than we got last year. We are going to deliver what we got and hopefully, everybody will get something,” said Fidze.
Distribution of the proceeds will take part on Thursday, December 21 at Civic Centre with institutions like Mucheke Old People’s Home and Alpha Cottages children’s shelter expected to be among the recipients.local

ERC lashes Hungwe over army remarks

Josaya Hungwe

TellZim Reporter

Think tank and advocacy institution on elections and democracy, the Election Resource Centre (ERC) has condemned newly-appointed Minister of State for Masvingo Provincial Affairs Josaya Hungwe for saying Zanu PF will involve the army in its campaign ahead of the 2018 elections.
“The Election Resource Centre (ERC) is concerned with Minister of State for Masvingo Provincial Affairs, Josaya Hungwe’s statement that Zanu PF will work with the Zimbabwe Defence Forces (ZDF) to campaign ahead of the 2018 general elections,” the organisation’s executive director Tawanda Chimhini said.
Chimhini urged the ZDF to adopt a non-partisan role during the electoral processes.
“As ERC, we urge the ZDF to maintain a non-partisan role during the electoral processes. The Zimbabwe Electoral Commission (ZEC) must ensure that political parties observe neutrality and promote free, fair and credible elections,” said Chimhini
Three weeks ago, TellZim News quoted Hungwe boasting that the Zanu PF Team Lacoste faction had ultimately won its war with rival G40 courtesy of the intervention by ZDF. He went on to brag that the party would campaign with the help of soldiers, encouraging the involvement of the military in every step of the way.
ERC, however, says the neutrality of the armed forces, as is required by the Constitution of Zimbabwe, must be respected by all political parties.
“Section 208 (2) (a) and (b) states that ‘neither the security services nor any of their members may, in the exercise of the functions (a) ‘act in a partisan manner’ (b) ‘further the interests of any political party or cause.'”
“It is important to ensure principles of transparency, freedom of speech and impartiality are maintained because the country is a signatory to the SADC Principles and Guidelines Governing Democratic Elections,” Chimhini said.
The election advocacy group urged the government to ensure that a peaceful environment is maintained to enable citizens to exercise their constitutional right to vote without fear or intimidation.local

This year, the trio participated in the Zimbabwe National Youth Games where Makovere scooped four medals; one gold, two silver and one bronze while Mupa won one gold and one silver medals.
In an interview with TellZim News on Monday, Makovere said they were committed to athletics and they had wanted to do better this year but they faced severe problems raising the requisite resources.
“Our wish is to do better next year and win more prizes. The challenge that we face is lack of money to fund all the expenses especially transport and accommodation since most competitions are held in Bulawayo and Harare,” said Makovere.
The trio also said that they failed to attend the National Athletics Association of Zimbabwe (NAAZ) games held last month in Bulawayo due to financial constraints.sport
