MASVINGO – Media Institute of Southern Africa (MISA) Zimbabwe – Masvingo chapter’s  provincial advocacy committee last week elected its new executive with TellZim News editor Passmore Kuzipa landing the position of chairperson uncontested.
The elections were held under the watchful eye of Misa Zimbabwe programmes officer Nyasha Nyakunu.
Theresa Takafuma landed the secretary general post uncontested while Madodana Nxumalo and Works Gezani, both from Hevoi FM, as well as Hazvinei Mwanaka, a freelance journalist, were elected committee members.
Kuzipa takes on from Golden Maunganidze who recently landed the national chairmanship post uncontested.
Speaking after his election, Kuzipa thanked the people for having faith in him and he promised to work hard to promote access to information.
He also encouraged the new team to work together to further the goal of media freedom in the province.
“As Masvingo, we have to work together as a team and always adhere to media ethics when conducting our duties. I also hope that we will work together in promoting access to information and freedom of expression in the province,” Kuzipa said.
The new team takes over at a critical juncture when the country is approaching elections, a time when tensions usually rise, with journalists facing harder obstacles in doing their work.local

BVR: Zanu PF, MDC-T clash over Victoria Ranch

MASVINGO – Zanu PF and MDC-T were caught off guard when Biometric Voter Registration (BVR) opened and put one of the new high density suburbs Victoria Ranch, which both parties had presumed to be the extension of Ward 3 in Masvingo Urban, to Masvingo West constituency as a new Ward 7B.
Victoria Ranch is yet to be incorporated into Masvingo town and will remain under Masvingo Rural District Council until the delimitation exercise is done in 2022.
Many people staying in Victoria Ranch were formerly residents of Ward 3 and that is where they voted in the 2013 election.
When some residents from there went to register as voters, they were told they now fall under a new ward in Masvingo West.
This prompted the MDC-T Ward 3 executive to organise a meeting to tell their people in Victoria Ranch to register using their previous addresses in Ward 3.
“Those in Victoria Ranch are our people and we need them to vote in Masvingo Urban not Masvingo West as is being said.
“They should register using their previous addresses. You find that some Ward 3 executive members are now residing in Victoria Ranch,” said one member at the MDC-T Ward 3 meeting.
On its side, Zanu PF held elections to choose leadership for the new ward thereby causing a friction with the opposition party which is mobilising the residents to register under Ward 3.
“That is fraud at its best. Zec (Zimbabwe Electoral Commision) should take action because people are giving false information. Those in Victoria Ranch should register under Victoria Ranch which is now Ward 7B in Masvingo West constituency.
“We are looking for the people who are doing that so we can expose them,” said Zanu PF Ward 7B chairperson Benneginna Mudangiranwa.local

ZVISHAVANE – The youth expo which is to be held on October 27 at the Kandodo Hall has seen the Zvishavane Youth Centre (ZYC) working closely with more young people so as to produce quality products that will be showcased at the event.
ZYC facilitator Clifford Mugiya said his organisation wanted to exhibit the best of what the youth in the district can produce.
“The youth expo is a day when the talent of our young people will be on show for all to see. The day will be very important since the youth will discover themselves, with parents discovering their children,” said Mugiya.
He said ZYC was expanding its operations in the community by creating art clubs in different schools in the district.
“As the one and only organisation which believes in talent scouting and youth development in the district, ZYC is growing bigger each day and we have 76 students from different schools in the district and 30 youths from the community who have joined our art clubs.
“ZYC gallery is a resource centre for history, heritage and religious studies. Youths come and practice playing marimba, mbira, writing and reciting poems and speeches on different subjects. It should be noted that the environment is our main theme from where we draw inspiration so we want to conserve it,” said Mugiya
On the same note, ZYC coordinator Bigboy Murenga said the centre was working with the Midlands State University (MSU) Department of Arts and Theatre in preparation for the day.
He said the high number of young people in their art clubs showed that the community had come to understand the mission of ZYC.local

CHIVHU – As the nation braces for a general election next year, Chief Mutekedza has told traditional leaders not to dabble into politics and avoid being used to further the interests of any political party.
He was speaking at a meeting which he organised with his people, with the Zimbabwe Republic Police (ZRP), National Prosecuting Authority (NPA) and Forestry Commission being present as invited guests.
The outspoken traditional leader, born Andrew Zhakata, lambasted traditional leaders who affiliate themselves with political parties.
He referenced Section 280 and 281 of the Constitution that clearly state that traditional leaders must not be involved in politics.
“Constitution yedu yemuno munyika yeZimbabwe isu matraditional leaders hatitenderwe nemutemo kuti tive nedivi ratakarerekera munyaya dzemapato, kuita izvozvo kukanganisa zvikuru. Hamufanire kuve nezvinzvimbo muma party kuva secretary, committee member or any,” said Chief Mutekedza.
He urged people in his area to affiliate to political parties of their choices without the influence of traditional leaders.
The chief criticised Members of Parliaments, councillors and ministers for putting themselves above those who put them into office instead of being true servants of the electorate.
He said only traditional leaders remained committed to the service of the people, not the public officials who get their positions through electoral means.
Chief Mutekedza reiterated the need for a crime-free community, urging traditional leaders to help keep peace by not interfering in political matters and respecting the people’s right to choose.
Most traditional leaders in the country are fully identified with the ruling Zanu PF party to which they gravitate in their efforts to keep their perks and privileges.local

WARP Summit Seeks Solution
to the Global Peace in Education

“Peace Education Development Forum for Spreading a Culture of Peace” at the 3rd Annual Commemoration of the WARP Summit was held in Seoul, Republic of Korea

With the idea that a world of peace without conflicts and wars should start from classrooms, experts in education from the world discussed development of peace education on the first day of the 3rd Annual Commemoration of the World Alliance Religions’ Peace (WARP) Summit on September 17 by Heavenly Culture, World Peace, Restoration of Light (HWPL) under the UN ECOSOC.
As a part of “establishing collaborative governance for development and implementation of the Declaration of Peace and Cessation of War (DPCW) drafted by HWPL in 2016 to advocate international cooperation with participation of civil society in peacebuilding efforts, the forum with education specialists as participants diagnosed the current issues of education in countries and discussed introduction and application of peace education inspired by HWPL.
Chairman Man Hee Lee of HWPL emphasized comprehensive application of peace education by saying, “We need peace education specifically for today. We ourselves should be the reality of peace education. Without the spirit of peace in himself, how can he possibly educate peace to students? To do this, peace education must start from family, so that the family becomes peaceful with the spirit of peace.”
Regarding the purpose and importance of peace education, “What role does education have in the diffusion of the culture of peace?” We are contributing in the promotion of the culture of peace in the world. We would help the citizens of tomorrow be more tolerant of each other and that a dialogue or discussion is the way to accept their differences and solve their conflicts,” emphasized Hon. Maria Eugenia Barrios Robles de Mejía, Vice Minister of Ministry of Education in Guatemala.
Participants discussed ways to enhance communication and network for inventing methodology and curriculum of peace education for future generations and to raise awareness of the need for teachers’ understanding the value of peace with detailed educational contents. “When we as teachers take up the responsibility to speak to our students, and be the necessary role models concerning how we speak, relationships and the adherence to order within society, we will start seeing the results in our students.” said Nancy Roussopoulos, Former Principal of Camps Bay Preparatory School in Cape Town.
Prof. Juan Carlos Torres at Don Bosco University shared his teaching experience of peace education by saying  “When I applied the focus of ‘conflict resolution’ value of HWPL, with children 5-9 years old (considered problem children for the college), the result was surprising. The change in attitude in their faces and joy was drawn on the paper like in this image. This education will change and form these values within their hearts as a permanent change.”

As an action plan to develop peace education discussed at the high-level meeting with education specialists last year at the summit, HWPL has established HWPL Peace Academies with 127 education institutions in 9 countries including India, Israel, Kosovo, and the Philippines.local

TellZim News Reporter

The fastest growing privately-owned community newspaper in the country, TellZim News last week Friday made history at the Great Zimbabwe University (GZU)’s 11th graduation ceremony when a total of seven of its staff members graduated each with an honours degree mainly in Media and Cultural Studies.
The development places TellZim News at the apex as a community newspaper with the most educated staff in the country and it also makes it one of the newspapers with the highest number of degreed journalists across the board.
Most outstanding was news editor Moses Ziyambi who won a whopping six awards for his efforts which included being the best Media and Cultural Studies student as well as being second best student for the whole Simon Muzenda School of Arts and Heritage Studies.
The accolades were the Vice Chancellor’s Award, the University Book Prize, FMS Global Solutions shield, Jadecon Construction and Engineering prize for being second best student for the whole Simon Muzenda School of Culture and Heritage Studies which houses five departments, the Zimbabwe Media Commission (ZMC) prize for being the best Media and Cultural Studies Student and the Moonlight Funeral Services prize for obtaining a first class degree.
Beatific Gumbwanda, who writes from Chiredzi and Chipinge districts, also obtained a first class degree and was awarded the University Book Prize for his remarkable exploits.
Other TellZim News staff members who graduated are Upenyu Chaota; who reports from Masvingo, Itai Muzondo; who reports from Gweru, Siyabonga Sayi; who also reports from Gweru and Lloyd Shunje who reports from Mutare.
Company accountant Marylin Katenjele graduated with an upper second class Bachelor of Commerce (BCom) Degree in Accounting.
Many other students who will graduate from GZU and Midlands State University (MSU) next year and the year after have passed through TellZim News or are still doing their work related learning with the popular newspaper.
All this puts the newspaper on an equal footing with other indigenous Small to Medium Enterprises (SMEs) that are sweating it out in a tough economic environment to provide opportunities to young people as well as the very hope that graduates in the country yearn for.
TellZim News editor Passmore Kuzipa, in his remarks in the wake of the graduation ceremony, said what the newspaper had achieved was unprecedented.
“Here is a newspaper with barely two years on the market but already boasting the highest number of journalists with university qualifications.  This is really a record and it puts us within the right framework which we need in our quest to constantly innovate and improve our newspaper.
“We congratulate all the graduates for a job well done, we thank them for doing the newspaper proud and helping to market TellZim News as a brand of forward looking people who take the reader and the advertiser seriously.  We acknowledge that education and continuous self-improvement is the way to go; we want to make sure that our brand is personified by well-educated people,” said Kuzipa.
When he came for the official opening of Hevoi FM in June this year, permanent secretary in the Ministry of Information, Media and Broadcasting Services George Charamba urged people in the media industry to ‘go to school’, saying he was fully aware that many people in the industry were practicing though they did not received requisite training.education
