MASVINGO – Two Masvingo Urban Councillors; Garcia Mundondo of Ward 1 and Lovemore Mufamba of Ward 10 as well as deputy city engineer Edward Mukaratirwa and deputy city treasurer Danster Jori last Friday graduated from the Great Zimbabwe University (GZU) with different qualifications.
Mundondo attained an upper second class honours degree in Peace, Conflict and Governance while Mufamba, who did his work related learning (attachment) with Tell Zimbabwe in 2015, also obtained an upper second class Bachelor of Arts Honours Degree in Media and Cultural Studies.
Both the councillors said they were happy to lead by example and they encouraged others to further their education so that they can improve their leadership skills.
Mukaratirwa graduated with a Master’s Degree in Business Administration and Finance while Jori graduated with a Master’s Degree in Applied Accounting.
Speaking to TellZim News, Mufamba said public leaders must always work to improve themselves academically for the sake of service delivery.
“I am happy with my achievement and I congratulate my colleagues in council who also graduated. It was a difficult yet fruitful four-year period that gave me this degree. I won’t stop here as I am already looking at enrolling for a Master’s programme. I encourage others to do the same so that we will be in a position to better understand issues to do with service delivery,” said Mufamba.
The Minister of Local Government Public Works and National Housing, Savior Kasukuwere recently warned that government was working to set minimum academic qualifications for prospective councillors.
He blamed the current rot in local authorities on uneducated councillors who do not understand anything about their work.education
