The dust seems to have settled down in the labour wrangle between the City of Masvingo and its former employees represented by the Zimbabwe Urban Council Workers Union (ZUCWU) who took the city fathers to court over US$3.5 million salary arrears in 2013 resulting in many service delivery cars, including the mayoral Mercedes Benz being attached.
The Labour Court last week threw out the case saying the council can now take back their cars and ordered that the award which had been won by ZUCWU be set aside.
The court also ordered both parties to bear their own legal costs.
Town Clerk Adolf Gusha said justice has been finally served although the legal battle had put the city at a disadvantage.
“The attachment of the service delivery cars was a major blow to the city council. The city lost a big deal in pursuit of justice. It is quite fortunate that the council did not collapse after the cars were taken away.
“I can safely say service delivery was not much affected by the legal battle becaue we managed to buy new vehicles to replace some of those which had been attached.
“The cars have deteriorated but we can put a few dollars to service them and they will be up and running again. We had not abandoned them since we carried maintenance on them every two weeks,” said Gusha.local

Bucho acquitted of illegal gold possession

21 April 2017, The Bulawayo High Court recently cleared Masvingo businessman Taurai Mudzviti, popularly known as Bucho, of charges of contravening the country’s precious stones regulation laws following his arrest at Plumtree border post in November 2015 for unlicenced possession of 3.2 kg of gold.

When contacted for comment, Mudzviti said he had obtained court orders for the release of his property seized by the State.
“Everything is fine now. We ended up in the High Court and I was cleared of the charges last month. The charges were a mistake. For more details you can contact my lawyer Admire Rubaya,” Mudzviti said.
Rubaya, however, promised to send the full details of the case but had not done so by the time of going to print.
Bucho was arrested together with Joshua Mabika when detectives from the minerals and border control unit stopped the car that the duo were traveling in en route to Botswana.local, topnews

MASHAVA – Women have been urged to take an active role in farming as a way of empowering themselves and enabling the consumption of healthier diets at community and family level.
Speaking at a Zimbabwe Smallholder Organic Farmers Forum (Zimsoff) – organised field day in Shashe Block near Mashava recently, the organisation’s chairperson, Elizabeth Mpofu said they were currently in the process of forming a farmer’s organisation for African women.
“Women must be actively involved in farming to supplement food reserves for a balanced food diet. As Shashe farmers, we must produce surplus food which can be supplied to institutions like schools and clinics for their own supplementary feeding schemes.
“This in turn will promote healthy living for our children who depend on food handouts from the government for such schemes,” said Mpofu, who also chairs La Via Campesina, an international farmers organisation.
She said the formation of a continental organisation for female farmers will enable women to visit other countries where they will share ideas on farming.
Speaking at the same occasion, Zimsoff national co-ordinator Nelson Mudzingwa said they were unhappy that seed companies concentrated exclusively on the production of hybrid seed maize.
“We have other food crops that contribute towards a balanced diet. Rapoko contains iron that is necessary for our blood, calcium for our bones and proteins for body building. Farmers must be enlightened on the production of small seed varieties and conservation farming which will enable them to diversify.
“Diversity means venturing into other areas like livestock and poultry production to supplement our food crops,” Mudzingwa said.

21 April 2017, Harare – Great Zimbabwe University (GZU) in partnership with the Ministry of Higher and Tertiary Education, Science and Technology Development recently co-hosted a “Cloudera Hadoop Certification Boot Camp” in Harare.
The training was organised with Information Communication Technology (ICT) experts in mind and is the first of its kind to be held in Southern Africa as, in the past,  ICT experts from the African continent would access such a service only in India.
The Boot Camp, which was advertised only for a short time, still managed to attract 54 students who were split into two training sessions.
Each course was six days long and was facilitated by seasoned experts with more than 20 years of experience including Sai Kumar Pilla from India and Dr Panaishe Chaurunga, who boasts vast experience acquired in the United Kingdom and France.
GZU realised the need for the course in the Zimbabwean ICT sector and engaged stakeholders including Econet Wireless, TelOne, Powertel and other government institutions.
Prince Sibanda, an ICT expert from GZU who is also the co-coordinator of the Boot Camp, said being skills-based and very dynamic, ICT is a profession which constantly needs further training.
He said there was a dire need for ICT experts to learn about Cloudera Hadoop Certification and contribute to the development of the country as the course is very significant in the analysis of large amounts of data.
The initiative by GZU to improve the nation’s ICT knowhow dovetails with the STEM initiative which aims to improve technological systems in the country.
Regai Kanongota, a database administrator with Econet Wireless said the course had come in handy as his job entails processing data daily in order to analyse performance of the network.
He highlighted that the system currently being used had limitations on processing large volumes of data, with the Boot Camp offering something more appealing.
The two Boot Camp sessions ended with participants being awarded certificates of attendance at a closing ceremony officiated by GZU Vice Chancellor Professor Rungano Jonas Zvobgo who promised that the university will continue to ensure that people are given a chance to acquire critical skills.education

ZAKA – Local councillors last week demanded that Zaka Rural District Council (RDC) buy motorbikes for them because other rural district councils had already done so for their councillors.
The matter was heard recently during a full council meeting at council offices at Jerera growth point.
The issue arose after finance committee chairperson Cllr Chrispen Watadza gave a report on the look and learn tour he recently had in Marondera and Mhondoro Ngezi RDCs, highlighting that the two local authorities had bought motorcycles and cellphones for their councillors.
The Human Resources Management committee, however, said Zaka RDC could afford to buy only cellphones for councillors.
District Administrator (DA) Victor Zinanga concurred, warning that the highly indebted local authority could not afford to buy bikes for cash or credit.
Council chairperson Sebastian Musundire was also of the view that council would be better advised to buy only phones for the councillors as a cost cutting measure since the country was approaching election time at which other councillors might not return.
Most councillors, however, vehemently opposed the idea, arguing that those who will fail to win back their wards in the 2018 elections would still be required to settle the outstanding bill.
“Who told you that we are living office? Even if we leave, we will pay up all the money. I want a bike not a phone which I can get anywhere outside,” said Cllr Chikomo.
Cllr Angeline Chipote criticised council for what she said was a failure to respect and take good care of its councillors.
“Hamungati nguva yapera. Imwe council yakapa macouncillors ayo mamotor bikes last month and imi muri kuti nguva yapera, maimbovepi,” said Chipote to the applause of other councillors.
After heated deliberations, councillors grudgingly accepted the resolution that council purchase only cellphones for them.local

CHIREDZI – The Minister of Agriculture, Mechanisation and Irrigation Development; Dr Joseph Made has warned sugarcane farmers on the potential danger posed by the fall army worm to their crops, saying though recent efforts to control the destructive pest had largely borne fruit, there was no room for complacency.
Fall army wormy is native to tropical regions of the western hemisphere from the United States to Argentina but has found its way to Africa due to changing climatic conditions and heavy winds.
The pest, which gave maize and cotton farmers a hard time this year, is also said to have been imported through maize which was distributed to communities affected by the El Nino-induced drought last year.
“I want to indicate that the fall army worm is still there. As we approach the winter season, it’s on hibernation. It is in the maize, maize stalks, maize cobs and in sorghum. It is even in the grass, underneath the soil,” said Dr Made.
He also highlighted that the worm was a new phenomenon to most local farmers meaning there was still little knowledge on it.
“Many people don’t know about it, even the extension workers. So there is need for physical inspection of the grass and if green materials come out, it will quickly emerge,” he said.
Dr Made indicated that the fall army worm needs soft spots and sugarcane farmers should consult experts to find out whether it was hibernating in their crops or not.local

But from the look of things, he is not a savior anymore; in fact he needs to be saved also because the Crocodile is really after him. Zviya zvekuti garwe haridye chebamba ndezvenhema zviye iyezvino riri kuita zvekuvhima Tyson chaiko. Wish you good luck Ngwena!
Anyway, Tyson I write this to you as a loving and caring sister. I have noticed with despair how they want to sacrifice you now after a tremendous job you did together with Ngwena and others to oust Dr Joice Teurairopa Mujuru that year. That was a job well done! 21 April 2017, SHURUGWI – Villagers in Jobolinko have expressed satisfaction with the development prospects of their area, saying their ward Councillor Tamiswa Njovana was doing a wonderful job to improve access to basic services.
People who spoke to TellZim News said being newly resettled, they would conventionally be expected to have the least access to public services like roads, schools and clinics.
Njovana has, however, sought to influence transformation of the area and has overseen the establishment of Jobolinko Clinic which boats a maternity ward.
“We used to travel to as far as Tongogara for health care so it used be hard for us in cases of sudden illnesses and emergencies especially during the night. We are glad that our councillor is representing us well in council and we are seeing development,” said one villager.
Others said they would want to see more leaders of the calibre of Njovana after the 2018 general elections.
“When people elect leaders, they want them to represent communal interests and not just to use those positions to enrich themselves. I am delighted that we have Cllr Njovana working hard to uplift our community,” said another villager.
Njovana told TellZim News that although there are resource challenges, he was working on more projects that include building a community centre, rehabilitating roads and food for work.
”We are faced with limitations in our resource mobilisation capacity and in getting volunteers to provide labour if there are no incentives but we are determined to succeed,” said Njovana.
He also said there was a two-year development plan which seeks to raise funds for the renovation of dilapidated schools, equip farmers and attract investors to explore the area’s rich cattle ranching potential.local

21 April 2017, MASVINGO – Salome Silindo (21) from Bikita, was last week crowned Miss Independence Masvingo province after beating 13 other contestants at the Miss Independence finals held at Charles Austin Theatre.
Trish Sibanda from Chivi and Tamara Tembo from Mwenezi were  crowned first and second princesses respectively while Yolanda Manhenga  from Masvingo was crowned Miss Personality.
The hotly contested finals featured 14 contestants; two from each of Masvingo’s seven districts.
Speaking after the finals, Silindo admitted that the competition was tough and she did not expect to win, saying the achievement had however came as a huge leap forward in her modelling career.
“I am very excited to be crowned Miss Independence today because I was not expecting it. As you can see, the completion was tough but I made it. I want to be a great model. I expect to win again next year,” she said
Provincial Administrator (PA) Fungai Mbetsa, who was the guest of honour representing the Minister of State for Masvingo Provincial Affairs Shuvai Mahofa, urged the organisers to work hard to improve the programme which he said was helping to foster unity in the province.
“The camp grew bigger this time than at its inception. Each district is represented by two contestants and this shows unity in the province and I want to urge the organisers to work hard for the improvement of the programme,” said Mbetsa.
The contestants were urged to improve on military displays and to wear jungle boots or tennis which were worn by guerrillas during the liberation struggle since those are the judges’ area of special interest.
The models competed to outdo each other in four displays which are military, culture, African attire, nightwear and questions from the colonial era.
The pageant was introduced last year with fewer contestants than this year, proof that the competition is growing in popularity.entertainment

21 April 2017, MASVINGO – Great Zimbabwe University (GZU)’s Fusion Band last week formally launched their album titled Dangwe during a colourful event at Masvingo’s Civic Centre public hall.
Speaking during the event, GZU Vice Chancellor Professor Rungano Zvobgo pledged to support the group’s adventures.
“What these students have done has made the university proud. As a university, we focus on cultural and heritage studies as well as practical projects like this so that we make a positive change to our community.
“We will also support this band on any project they wish to embark on. To those who are guiding these young ones, I am giving you assurance that the pocket that gave you money for the first time is still full, just bring your proposals and we will support you in any way possible,” Prof Zvobgo said.
The humorous Prof Zvobgo also took the moment to tell the crowd how his brother, the late nationalist Edison Zvobgo, had discouraged his musical ambitions while still studying in India.
“I also have a music background you might be interested to hear. During my university days in India, I was a band member and played a guitar. Music is one of the things I love the most but my brother stopped me saying ndezvechirombe.
“My son has however taught me something about music. I was mad at him when I realised he sneaks out of the house to go and entertain revellers at night clubs but looking into his academic achievements, I have promised to buy him a set of drums.
“I have told this story so as to encourage you to see that music does not disturb your studies but it rather keeps you occupied and entertained,” Zvobgo said.
A copy of Dangwe went on auction and university registrar Sinikiwe Gwatidzo became the highest bidder at US$150. Other bidders were Prof Zvobgo (US$100) and Masvingo Mayor Hubert Fidze (US$70).
Also present at the event was Reformed Church University (RCU) Vice Chancellor, Professor Wiseman Magwa and veteran musician Bob Nyabinde.entertainment
