Floods-ravaged roads isolate Mwenezi

MWENEZI – The ease of travel for people living close to Mwenezi River and beyond is now lower than ever before due to badly-damaged roads left behind by heavy rains that culminated in Cyclone Dineo earlier this year.
The Manyuchi – Maranda road, which is one of the few main arteries connecting people in different parts of the district, is now in a sorry state with gaping dongas that make the road hardly usable.
Small passenger vehicles and scotch-carts, the main modes of transport, have since withdrawn from the area.
Community members around Manyuchi have responded by forming a committee to try organise volunteers to patch the road with any material they can find.
Committee leader, Obert Shiriyapenga told TellZim News that travel in the district had never been harder.
“We cannot travel anymore so we have decided to do some work on our own so that those who are in a better position to help would find us doing something,” said Shiriyapenga.
Newly-elected Mwenezi East Member of Parliament Joosbi Omar said he was aware of the poor state of roads in his constituency.
“I am aware of the poor state of the roads like the Manyuchi – Maranda road. I am going to visit some of the areas that need urgent attention. I want to see how we can do something about it,” said Omar.
Fishermen plying their business at Manyuchi Dam also complained that business had gone down because motorists who used to be their main customers were no longer coming.
Other villagers also said critically ill people can no longer be rushed to hospital due to transport shortages.local

Hate him or like him, Wellington Mahwende – a Masvingo based private land developer of the December 12 has managed to transform Victoria Ranch.
Home seekers in the low income bracket have testified that they are now able to construct their own houses in the Remainder of Victoria Ranch, thanks to Mahwende’s tailor-made conditions meant for every home seeker from all walks of life.
December 12 has been praised for managing to connect sewer and water to homes in Victoria Ranch.
“I am very excited that I now have water and sewer connected at my house. It has been my dream to have water and sewer at my house and today my dream has been realised,” one of the beneficiaries told TellZim News on Wednesday.
Mahwende told TellZim News that they have so far managed to connect water to over 80 percent of their beneficiaries while almost 40 percent now have sewer connected at their houses.
Mahwende said his wish was to see every house connected to sewer and water by year end.
“We are working day and night to make sure that the people in Victoria Ranch get water and sewer at their homes as soon as possible. Some of us are not excited by simply making promises; we actually go on the ground to deliver … this is what has made us different from other people,” said Mahwende.
Apart from connecting water and sewer, December 12 has since embarked on a massive road maintenance with bridges being put in place in Victoria Ranch for the first time.
“I can confirm that we are going to make sure that Victoria Ranch will be like any other residential surbub in Masvingo. The people who got stands from us must never be deprived in any way. In fact, we want to show the world that we are able to develop our own city,” said Mahwende.
He thanked President Robert Mugabe for empowering indigenous people.
“As the spirit of independence is still upon us, I want to thank President Robert Mugabe for empowering us…now we are proud home owners courtesy of his pro-development policies,” added Mahwende.local

23 April 2017, BIKITA – Chief Mabika of Bikita has warned parents to pay their children’s school fees in time and clear up any arrears they may have or risk new harsh measures he will take against fees defaulters.
Chief Mabika made the threats recently while addressing cotton farmers at Chiremwaremwa in Bikita where he accused non-paying parents of stunting the development of local schools.
He threatened to do a follow-up on all parents who owe schools, confiscate and sale their cattle to recover what is due to schools.
“Zvikoro zviri kuchema nevabereki kuti hamusi kuda kubhadharira vana venyu mari yechikoro. Manje ini ndakatotaura nemapurisa kare nana mudhumeni kuti pamuchaenda kumarket ndichatora mombe kune umwe neumwe ane chikwereti ndichitengesa kuti ndibhadhare zvikwereti zvenyu (There are complaints from the schools that you do not want to pay up. I have already spoken to the police and agritex officers that I follow you to the market and confiscate your cattle so that I can pay up what you owe),” said Chief Mabika.
He also warned parents not to accept goodies that their girl children bring home if they are not sure about the origins of the goods saying that was feeding the scourge of child marriages and sexual abuse.
“Musatambire grocery rinouya nevanasikana ramusingazive kuti ratengwa nani nekuti musi waachauya nenhumbu achakuudzai kuti maidya grocery rangu maiti rinobvepi (Do not accept it when your daughters bring groceries that you do not know who bought it because one day she will come back pregnant,” said Chief Mabika.local

23 April 2017, GUTU – Daring cattle rustlers are terrorising areas around Bhasera communal lands in Gutu where a number of beasts have been slaughtered in their pens with all the meat; except offals, hooves and heads being carried away.
Villagers who spoke to TellZim News said the cattle rustlers normally strike at night and are boldly slaughtering and skinning the cattle on spot.
The latest incident took place at Mandirengu Bhasera’s homestead where a heifer was slaughtered in the middle of the night.  Bhasera is the village head in the area.
The villagers said they had reported the matter to the police but the culprits were still to be brought to book but Chief Chingombe was looking for ways to stem the problem.
“Last week the chief held a meeting with the community to discuss the issue and map the way forward. Police officers from Bhasera also attended the meeting where they advised villagers to look after their cattle.
“The gathering, however, agreed that some police officers may be involved, something which the police denied,” one villager said.
Police at Bhasera said they were committed to bringing the cattle rustlers to book but needed the assistance of the public to identify. They said the rustlers could be people who are knowledgeable of the area.local

23 April 2017, CHIVHU – There was drama at Philjen Lodge recently when Chikomba Rural District Council assistant auditor Bornwell Madhuveko used his teeth to tear off the left thumb of one Ronald Mafuka who had had a dispute with a staff member at the lodge.
A police report was made following the incident and Madhuveko was arrested but Mafuka later withdrew the case after agreeing to an out-of-court settlement.
The agreed terms are that Madhuveko pays Mafuka a sum of US$4000 as compensation for injuries caused and he had already paid US$1000 by the time of writing.
On the day in question, sources said, a female staff member at the lodge who is related to Madhuveko accidentally hit Mafuka with a broken glass bottle leading to a minor misunderstanding which was however quickly resolved.
Madhuveko is however said to have followed Mafuka when he was leaving the place, grabbed him by the lapels and bit him hard on the finger before leaving him wriggling with pain in a pool of blood.
“He tore my finger apart and I have people who came my rescue to thank. I did not fight back but I warned him that what he was doing was wrong. I withdrew the case from the police because it would probably have cost him his family and job,” said Mafuka.
“I don’t know what got into him because I had already settled my dispute with his relative. As for now, I am getting medical attention from the doctors but the pathetic part of the story is that I have lost my finger but I had to forgive him and settle the matter in a gentlemen’s way,” said Mafuka.
Madhuveko could not be reached for comment by the time of going to press.local, topnews

Satanism scare at Chivhu schools

23 April 2017, CHIVHU – Some parents with children attending Chivhu Primary and Liebenberg High are contemplating withdrawing their children from the schools following what they said was an endless string of paranormal incidents rocking the schools.
On closing day last term, one female pupil at Liebenberg was reportedly found lying in the middle of Marondamashanu road and the confused pupil could not explain how she got to be there.
The passerby who first saw the girl lying on the road was reluctant to speak to this reporter fearing to suffer the same fate.
A few weeks ago, a Grade 4 pupil at Chivhu Primary School is said have started shivering strangely and rolling her eyes.
Puzzled teachers and other pupils are said to have witnessed the pupil producing fire-like elements in her armpits, forcing them to call her father who disclosed that the child had once brought home a watch she had been given by a neighbour (name withheld).
The father is said to have told the teachers that he had ordered the girl to go and dump the watch far away but she soon started having nightmares and seeing visions of the watch calling her to come and pick it up where she had thrown it.
“We are still in shock because we do not know what is happening to our child. I cannot disclose more as for now but I suspect issues to do with Satanism,” said a relative to the girl who preferred anonymity.
One Liebenberg High staff member told TellZim News that inexplicable faintings are often experienced at the school with girls being the most vulnerable victims.
“We are used to it and it affects mainly girls who just collapse and wake up at the hospital. It’s hard to understand because even medical practitioners have no explanation,” said the source.
The source also revealed that one girl from the school had recently tried to commit suicide but could not reveal what was troubling her.local

Chiefs clash with Zaka RDC

Brighton Chiseva

ZAKA – Local chiefs last week blasted Zaka Rural District Council (ZRDC) for what they claimed to be a blatant failure to give them due respect and turning to them only when their cooperation is needed.
The matter arose in a full council meeting last week after the District Administrator (DA) Victor Zinanga and the chiefs  present were asked to encourage villagers to pay the development levy.
Incumbent Chief Nhema, Rangarirai Bwawanda said council management often disregards the position of chiefs and only recognise them they want to use them.
“Ndakauya pano ndichida macheya ndikanzi naChatikobo uyo agere apo (pointing to the council admin Rambisayi Chatikobo) akati hazviiti kuti ndikupei, asi zvino mava kuda kuti tikubetserei kuwana levy iyoyo. Munotidherera asi muchitishandisa,” fumed Nhema.
Upon hearing that, council chairperson Sebastian Musundire warned Chatikobo not to disrespect chiefs and to accord whatever help they need.
Chief Nhema’s claims were supported by Chief Nyakunhuwa, Courage Mashavave and Chief Bota who both pointed out that councillors seldom consult councillors on many issues.
“It is these councillors who bypass us and work directly with village heads that we don’t even recognise. That is causing confusion among the people,” said Chief Bota.
On a different note, Zinanga accused Council Chief Executive Officer (CEO) David Majaura of overlooking him and not reporting many important issues to him.
“I only hear some of the important developments which take place here by rumour but yet we have a CEO who should brief me. Sometimes I have to call him to get information which he is supposed to bring on his own in the first place,” said Zinanga.
Majaura, however, accused Zinanga of lying saying nothing like that had ever happened.
“This issue is now being personalised I guess, the DA has never come to my office or called as he is saying,” said Majaura.local

Mwenezi RDC on clean-up campaign

Cephas Shava

MWENEZI – The Mwenezi Rural District Council (MRDC) last Wednesday embarked on a massive clean-up campaign at Neshuro growth point as part of wider efforts to maintain a healthy environment.
The European Union (EU) – funded Local Authority Capacity Enhancement Project (LACEP), last year allocated funds to the rural council to help in the improvement of solid waste management.
The clean-up campaign also saw the installation of refuse bins at the growth point.
MRDC executive officer for Agriculture and the Environment, Kudzai Sirewu praised LACEP and other stakeholders for making the campaign a success.
“As MRDC we really appreciate the funds received from LACEP. They made this campaign a resounding success. Besides that, we also thank other stakeholders who chipped in with different forms of assistance.
“These include Mwenezi Development Training Centre, Mr Joosbi Omar who donated 10 bins and foodstuffs and other various stakeholders who participated and contributed to the campaign,” said Sirewu.
The guest of honour, Kenneth Madziva, who represented the Mwenezi District Administrator (DA), said the fact that people of all age groups participated in the campaign reflected strong commitment by all citizens to environmental cleaniliness.
He said the clean-up campaign acted as a powerful message that a clean environment is critical to public health and urged people not to throw litter everywhere.
Pupils from Mwenezi Government High School and Masogwe Primary School also took part in the clean-up campaign.
The rural council is also scheduled to carry-out a similar campaign at Rutenga growth point in March.local

We are underfunded, says Parirenyatwa

Beatific Gumbwanda

CHIREDZI – The Minister of Health and Child Care, Dr David Parirenyatwa has blamed the calamitous state of the country’s public health system on meagre budgetary allocations from the national treasury.
Speaking in an interview with TellZim News in Chiredzi, Dr Parirenyatwa defended his ministry’s management of the country’s health delivery system, saying lack of resources was to blame for the awful situation in most public health institutions.
His comments come in the wake of the suspension of the BCG vaccination programme at Chiredzi General Hospital due to the shortage of syringes.
“The health system needs more money than the US$500 million that the budget proposed. We need approximately US$1.3 billion in order for us to deliver good services. The situation is bad because we have few resources including inadequate drugs, syringes and drips,” Dr Parirenyatwa said.
He also said Chiredzi General Hospital needs a new maternity ward to cater for the rapid population growth in the district and urged the council-run poly clinic to do more on antenatal and maternity care so as to relieve pressure at the hospital.
“We toured Chiredzi General Hospital some time ago and discovered that it has a very small maternity wing. There is an urgent need to build a new maternity wing to cater for the increased demand for maternity health services,” he said.health

Summerton farmer gets 26 tonnes on 4 ha

TellZim Reporter

21 April 2017, Farmers in the perennially dry Summerton area have praised the AgriSeeds ZAP 61 maize seed which they planted at the onset of the rainy season for its adaptability to local climatic conditions and soil types leading to high yields.
Farmers gathered at Clarence Maunganidze’s homestead in Summerton a field day which saw farmers showcasing their high yields.
Using the hybrid seed variety, Maunganidze managed to produce 26 tonnes of maize on a four-hectare piece of land.
“We have been getting poor yields over the years because of poor farming methods but now we have been taught to plant on a small piece of land and minimise on output.
I planted 20 kg of ZAP 61 and managed to harvest 26 tonnes which has never happened in Summerton. This season, the whole community has very good yields like never before,” said Maunganidze.
The field day was attended by Chief Zimuto, headman Gilbert Gwekwe, AgriSeeds officials and Agritex officials.agriculture
