Imagine, for the first time since I came to town in 2015, I managed to enter a hotel last Friday where I attended a discussion organised by the biggest newspaper in Masvingo province and the southern region, TellZim News. Some avid readers call it ZimTell, others call it TeleZim but the correct name is TellZim News.
Anyway, the real truth is I enjoyed a lifetime opportunity at Chevron Hotel and the discussion was very informative. Can you imagine iniwo zvangu Mapombi ndiripo pahotera ndakapfeka mamvemve angu iwaya. Kkkkkk but Jealousy Mawarire the spokesperson weZimPF anotoda shamhu chaiyo – hanzi Zanu PF yajaira zveintimidation and vote-buying manje in Mwenezi East it will be pound for pound kkkkk gore rino hamba ichasangana neane demo. Handei tione!
But Mapombi learnt something on Friday; that is, empty vessels do make a lot of noise. All along I used to argue when my fellow colleagues told me kuti Gushungo (G40) faction hapana zvinozivikanwa kwakazara madofo – ndakazozvionera pamhuno sefodya.
Last week, Mapombi urged Amasa Nhenjana kuti at least aende kuNight School, but I am afraid the number of G40 Cdes who should go to Night School is quite huge, including youths. Mapombi never thought youths as young as ana Talent Chivange can behave like Grade Zero pupils.

Mataruse mubobobo saga: Parents want head to go

10 Feb 2017 – GUTU – Parents at Mataruse Primary School in Gutu are not satisfied with the manner in which school head, Tranos Murerwa, has handled the mubobobo saga at the school and they now want him to leave together with his deputy, Douglas Mushangwe.
This comes amid revelations that a team from the district education office visited the school on January 26 to investigate the alleged mubobobo cases. Their findings are still to be released.
Last year TellZim News carried an article about the mubobobo saga that had forced the entire female teaching staff at the school to seek transfers as they complained about being sexually abused during the night.
Some of them claimed that while they went to bed fully dressed they woke up to find that their undergarments had been removed during the night and there were signs that somebody had been intimate with them in their sleep.
There were allegations that some of the teachers, who were pregnant, had suffered miscarriages as a result of the mubobobo attacks.
The school’s development association later sought the services of traditional healers who revealed that the culprit was an identified teacher at the school.
Authorities have allegedly done nothing to remove the identified teacher from the school and female teachers are living in constant fear of being sexually harassed.
Parents who spoke to this publication said they were unhappy with the manner by which the matter was handled and called on the education authorities to transfer both the headmaster and his deputy.
“We feel the headmaster and his deputy are not worried about our safety. We complained after bizarre things started happening at the school and in surrounding villages.
“Traditional healers who were consulted identified the root cause of the problem but the school authorities have done nothing to address the situation.
“We hear that a team from the offices at Mpandawana visited the school on 26 January but we do not know what they were told,” said some parents.
Teachers at the school said they were interviewed by the officials who did not release their findings to school authorities.
TellZim News was also informed that Headman Mataruse has now taken a keen interest in the matter.

10 Feb 2017 – BIKITA – In the early 1990s, government provided food for primary school pupils under the Home Grown School Feeding Program (HGSFP), an initiative which credited for boosting attendance and saving children from ailments that are related to poor nutrition especially in rural areas.
The programme disappeared as the economy of the country took a knock put with persistent droughts the problems caused by poor nutrition on young children became more glaring and the government re-introduced the programme some few years ago.
In 2016, the Permanent Secretary in the Ministry of Primary and Secondary Education; Dr Sylvia Utete – Masango hailed Gutu communities for supporting the initiative and urged others to do the same, highlighting the government’s wish to expand the programme
Further afield in Bikita district, Bikita Minerals has for long been making its own enormous contributions to support the supplementary feeding to many schools in solidarity with the government initiative.
The mining company is providing traditional mahewu energy drink to schools and has been doing that since 2015.
Schools that have been benefiting from the mine’s helping hand include Domboshava Primary School, Mandindi Primary School, Beardmore Primary School, Bikita Minerals Primary School and Rusununguko Primary School. Marundu Primary School in Gutu also added to the list of beneficiaries this year.
School representatives who spoke to TellZim News praised the company for its commitment to the welfare of surrounding communities.
Domboshava Primary, people said, had witnessed great improvement in learning standards due to the support extended to it by the mining company.
School head, Douglas Dzore said the school had recorded leaps in its pass rate ever since they started to receive support in 2015.
“In 2014, we attained a 25.1 percent pass rate which was way below average but we jumped to 64.86 percent in 2015 after Bikita Minerals came on board. We then recorded a 57.14 percent pass rate 2016,” said Dzore.
Senior teacher at the school, Silas Chamunorwa said the school had become more respectable than before owing to the support from the mining company.
 “This school was established in 1914 but very few, if any, have given it the kind of support as has been given to it by Bikita Minerals. Standards have improved here and the children are in a better standing than they would otherwise have been. 
“I grew up in this area and Domboshava was one of the most looked-down-upon schools because its buildings were very old. It is all different now and things are shaping up, thanks to the support of Bikita Minerals,” said Chamunorwa.
Rusununguko Primary School, which is still working to improve its pass rate, has also registered changes in school attendance and performance by pupils as a result of the feeding scheme.
Statistics show that the average weight by age of children at the school has also risen.
“The weight of children in our ECD classes used to average 13 kg but after receiving extra aid from the mine to give our pupils mahewu, we are seeing an average weight of 18 kg for the same class,” read part of the documents.
Bikita Minerals Primary School headmaster; Lovemore Zifunzi told TellZim News that attendance had greatly improved as a result of the initiative.
“As you know government re-introduced the HGSFP but the initiative needs support. Bikita Minerals has proved to be a benevolent caregiver by donating the ‘mahewu’ traditional brew. Right now attendance per day is has risen to 100 percent,” Zifunzi said.
The school head also revealed that the mine was helping in many other projects meant to improve leaning conditions.
TellZim News managed to contact Bikita Minerals mine manager; David Mwanza who said the company acknowledges the salient relationship between nutrition and intellectual development.
“Most rural homesteads do not have enough food due to droughts and other social factors. We realised that school children can be motivated to concentrate and to like their school work if they are well-fed thus our decision to complement the government’s feeding programme.
“We also wish to support those who perform well in their studies so that we employ them at the mine. All being said, we take pride in giving back to the community we operate in,” Mwanza said.
Masvingo Provincial Education Director (PED); Zedias Chitiga praised Bikita Minerals for demonstrating a strong commitment to Bikita communities.
“Can anyone work on an empty stomach and produce results? Such initiatives are very helpful. You would see that at their level, primary school pupils do much of the playing and learning so feeding them gives them enough energy for all that.
“What the mining company is doing is welcome to us as the Ministry of Primary and Secondary Education. The Ministry also has a saying that goes, ‘Healthy mind on a healthy body’ and obviously, a healthy body only comes by eating well,” Chitiga said.business, education

10 Feb 2017 – City of Masvingo mayor Hubert Fidze last week Saturday unveiled a plaque at the newly renovated club house at Masvingo Sports Club golf section to cap months of hard work that was supported by companies like Nyaradzo Funeral Services, Delta Corporation, OK Masvingo and Regency Group as well as other individuals.
The event was graced by other dignitaries including Nyaradzo Group Chief Executive and co-founder Phillip Mataranyika and renowned cardiologist, Professor Jonathan Matenga.
Fidze thanked the companies involved for their collective sense of social responsibility which made it possible for the clubhouse to receive a facelift.
“I am humbled by the commitment shown by the corporate sponsors to the welfare of this club. The work that has been done here would not have been possible had it not been for them,” said Fidze.
He also praised the former out-going captain Cassian Mutsambiwa, his successor Nick Manjoro and their executives for a job well-done.
Masvingo Golf Association president, Setfree Mapuvire hailed Mataranyika and Prof Matenga for investing both their time and resources towards the project.
He also praised the Masvingo Golf Club executives for working tirelessly for the completion of the work.
“It took long yes because we were being led by a meticulous man, Cassian Mutsambiwa, who pays attention to detail. We also thank Manjoro for smoothly carrying on with the work,” said Mapuvire.
The clubhouse now boasts a new roof and a sparkling new ceiling courtesy of the Nyaradzo Funeral Services group. The group also donated adjustable bar chairs while Delta Beverages contributed fixed chairs.
Regency, which is known for its commitment to clean renewable energy, donated a solar water geyser while Steward Bank made a substantial monetary donation.
OK Masvingo also made its own various donations, and the building now spots a glittering new look and shiny floor tiles.
The unveiling ceremony was preceded by a golf tournament which attracted over 50 players from such golf clubs as Roland Park in Zvishavane, Mutirikwi in Renco, Triangle in the Lowveld and Harare.
Game format was individual stableford played over 18 holes, with players enjoying the lush greens that have sprouted over the whole golf course as a result of the rains.
Charles Mativenga of Mutirikwi, won the tournament after scoring a nett 36 points playing on 15 handicap.
On second position was D. Gopal who amassed 35 points playing 24 handicapp while Francis Tamburai emerged at third position with nett 34 points playing 12 handicap.
Reigning Masvingo club champion, Cephas Ngwenya and Tinashe Mazanhi were rewarded for achieving the Two Clubs score.sport

10 Feb 2017 – MWENEZI – The Zion Christian Church (ZCC)-run Hebron High School continues to shine as an emblem of academic excellence, with the school’s colourful performance in the 2016 ‘A’ Level examinations bearing that testimony.
While some established centres of learning are still struggling to reach the 100 percent mark, for Hebron High School, it has become part of tradition and a trademark since 2013.
All the 10 subject areas were passed with a 100 percent score mark save for Geography and Accounting which recorded a 96 percent and 92 percent pass rate respectively.

10 Feb 2017 – CHIVHU – The Chivhu Residence and Ratepayers Alliance (CHRRA) has attacked Chikomba Rural District Council (RDC) for alleged mismanagement and corrupt dealings which have led to poor service delivery.
CHRRA chairperson, Collen Zvarevashe said there was gross mismanagement and misuse of rate payers’ funds in the council.
He challenged council to show residents how money that was generated from the sale of part of Liebenberg High School’s land was used.
“There is lack of transparency in the management of council affairs and there is runaway corruption. We suspect the money was used for personal gain instead of investing it to improve agriculture education at Liebenberg.
“The school lacks standard laboratories and the money must have been used to address such issues” said Zvarevashe.
As a residents’ organisation, Zvarevashe said, they were not afraid to take their fight for good governance forward, saying they will engage the local governance ministry to come and look into how issues were being handled by the council.
 “I’m not afraid to say it out that those officials at the council are corrupt and council business is being poorly run and that has affected our lovely town,” Zvarevashe said.
 “They cannot even repair roads at the most critical intersections of the town and there is a big pothole at the main junction in the CBD. They do not even collect refuse and the few rubbish bins available are always overflowing yet residents are paying for services every month,” he said.
Some members of the residents alliance were arrested last week for conducting a meeting in the town hall without council approval.
Chikomba RDC chairperson, Luckson Mutara confirmed the Liebenberg issue but said he was not in a position to give full details as he was out of office on duty.
Reports of maladministration and corruption have cost Chivhu an official town status and in 2011, some councillors complained that Mutara was employed without meeting required qualifications and was now studying to acquire them at the council’s expense.local

10 Feb 2017 – CHIREDZI – The Zimbabwe Sugarcane Development Association (ZSDA) recently held its Annual General Meeting at Polo Cross in Hippo Valley at which the chairman’s report unveiled a theme on ‘specialising in intensive diversified farming’ so as to improve yields by fostering cordial working relations with millers and financial institutions.
The meeting was graced by the Deputy Minister of Agriculture Responsible for Irrigation, Davis Marapira.
 ZSDA has empowered farmers by training and giving them new skills in such business ventures as fisheries, cattle fattening, beekeeping, boer goat keeping.
The organisation is also diversifying into cattle rearing and pen fattening but has been looking at how it can engage Tongaat Hullet so that more molasses is made available to local farmers before exports are made.
ZSDA chairperson Edmore Veterai said Tongaat Hullet should consider local molasses requirements first before shipping everything to other countries.
“Tongaat has exported more than 600 trucks of molasses to South Africa but in Zimbabwe molasses that went to Murehwa and Chitomborwizi and other places in 2016 are only 15 trucks. Our cattle are losing 35 kilograms every year between July and December, and they gain 30 kilograms between January and June,” Veterai said.
Farmers were also encouraged to utilise the opportunity to learn that has been made available by the working relationship between ZSDA and Great Zimbabwe University (GZU) which is opening a campus in Chiredzi this February.
About 42 ZSDA farmers applied for the certificate in Sugarcane Agriculture.
“Our partnership with GZU has made the ZSDA to be the brand farmers. We are not just farmers but farmers of the revolution,” said Veterai.
In December 2016, ZSDA successfully held a successful tree planting day during which every farmer was urged to plant a minimum of 100 trees this rainy season.
Bananas gown in drains will also be produced on a commercial scale.
“CABS indicated that if we organise our farmers very well, they will give us loans to begin the banana project. These bananas will be grown in drains so there will be no need to irrigate them,” Veterai said.
ZSDA is on its way to construct its Headquarters in Chiredzi and they are still seeking funds. They are also to purchase a bus that will be transporting farmers and their families to field days, national events and meetings to mention a few.local

10 Feb 2017 – MWENEZI – A 41-year-old man went on the rampage destroying window panes of the house of his uncle – his father’s elder brother – after allegedly seeing the elderly man loitering at his homestead in the middle of the night.
Appearing before Mwenezi Magistrate, Honest Musiwa, was Cainos Mhere of Village 2 Beperi, Chief Maranda, who pleaded innocent to the charges of malicious damage to property of 66-year-old Nerian Mhere of the same village.
It is the State’s case that on December 10, 2016, Cainos went to Nerian’s homestead shouting, accusing him of witchcraft and ordering him to come out.
When Nerian refused, Cainos allegedly struck the door handle and smashed some window panes before he was restrained by his younger brother.
The accused however told Magistrate Musiwa that he only went to his uncle’s house to find out what was going on.
“I visited his homestead but I did not smash any window pane. I just ran after him because I had spotted him at my homestead in the night. So I wanted to ask him what exactly was he doing,” Cainos
Giving evidence before the same court, Nerian however said Cainos was armed with a stick when he visited his homestead.
He allegedly smashed his window panes saying he would bury him that day.
He also confirmed that the bad blood between him and Cainos dated back to 2011 when he refused to engage witch hunters because it is not allowed in his church.

10 feb 2017 – MWENEZI – A small-scale Mwenezi farmer has become a shining example to the community of Rutenga Ranch’s ward 13 under Chief Neshuro as some local farmers have begun to copy his mini-irrigation scheme.
Bigboy Madhochi owns almost seven hectares of land but unlike his fellows, Madhochi is fully utilising three hectares of land throughout the year, drawing water from a borehole he drilled at his home.
“My dream is to put the whole land into full use throughout the year. I have got three full time workers and despite the challenges, I will definitely increase my workforce. Besides growing crops I am also constructing feedlots because I want to venture into cattle ranching,” said Madhochi  
A recent visit by TellZim News to the area revealed that a number of people in the area who used to rely solely on rain for cultivation have begun to drill boreholes with the intention of initiating an irrigation scheme that is similar to Madhochi’s.
Villagers interviewed gave credit to Madhochi whom they said was their source of inspiration.
Mudhochi started from scratch; buying and selling cattle but is now a successful farmer growing a variety of crops for sale. He is currently supplying the community around Rutenga with his farm produce and is looking forward to expand his market base.local

10 Feb 2017 – MASVINGO – Artists in Masvingo have joined forces and produced a song aimed at complementing efforts to fight child marriages within their communities.
Title ‘Achiri mwana’, the piece is a theme song for MyAge Zimbabwe Trust’s project called “Girls Choose” which is aimed at ending child marriages.
Achiri Mwana features Teddy Alchemy, Baba Rah, Junior O, HD, Scatter, Cee Jay and a poet; Promise Mudavanhu.
MyAge Zimbabwe director, Onward Gibson Chironda applauded the artists for their work.
“We thank them for their collective efforts towards the Girls Choose project which is an advocacy to end child marriages in communities.
“MyAge uses innovative and youth friendly ways to engage with young people and music is the other way. I commend the efforts that were put by the artists to come up with such a good project,” said Chironda.
Baba Rah (real name Ngoni Chinovava) composed the song and directed the video.
“We worked on this production as local artists as a way of trying to bring up a powerful voice against child marriages.
“Artists are social icons so if they work together on such issues society responds positively,” Baba Rah said.
These artists are also ambassadors of the Girls Choose project.
Previously girls could get married at the age of 16 while boys could marry at 18 but the Constitutional court ruled against that on January 20 2016.
The Zimbabwe Constitutional Court ruled that Section 22 of the Marriage Act is unconstitutional and therefore no person male or female may enter into any marriage including an unregistered customary law union including one arising out of religious rites before attaining the age of 18 years.entertainment
