MUTARE – With just four matches before the curtain comes down on the Zifa Eastern Region Division One title race, it is still game on for the Manicaland-based trio of Mutare City Rovers, Buffaloes FC and Tenax FC who seem to have equal chances of winning the Premier Soccer League ticket (PSL).
All the three teams had a good time last weekend when they collected all the crucial maximum points although the Tenax and Surrey FC match, which the former was leading 3-2, was abandoned in the 92nd minute following protestations over a contentious penalty.
Second-placed Buffaloes maintained the three points gap when they dismissed United Lions 2-0 while log leaders Mutare City also enjoyed a 2-0 victory over Mucheke Pirates in Sakubva Stadium.
Mutare City Rovers had all its goals in the first half courtesy of braces from Hebron Mukokota who first capitalised from Evans Chikwaikwai’s throw in the 6th minute before his efforts again saw his name on the score sheet when he scored just outside the box.
Speaking after the game, Mutare City assistant coach Itai Makumi praised his charges for playing according to the plan.
“We had a good game, the boys played according to plan and scored early. It worked to our advantage because these teams now have nothing to lose. There is no more room for mistakes so all our remaining games are a must win,” said Makumi.
Mutare City will travel to Chipinge for a match against Black Eagles while Buffaloes have a tricky encounter with Mucheke Pirates.
Tenax FC will be hoping for a draw at most when Buffaloes and Mutare City Rovers meet and again and will need both teams to either draw or lose on their other remaining matches.sport
