MUTARE – Some enterprising residents of Sakubva are creating employment
for their children and others by turning part of their homesteads into
furniture factories.
Due
to the availability of timber in Mutare, the residents find it comparatively
easy to make affordable furniture.
Many
residents have been employed as carpenters at the home industries along Chimanimani
Road and beyond where such products as wardrobes, kitchen units, chest of drawers,
beds and pushing trays are made.
The
entrepreneurs sell their products from right in front of their homes.
”The
difficult economic situation in the country meant I could not take good care of
myself and my family until I started this business. There are no jobs and I was
always starving but I am now alright and I employ others,” said one of the
carpenter who identified himself as Marume.
However,
the home industries have created problems for other residents who say the sawdust
generated and the chemicals used by the craftsman is not healthy for a
residential area.
Residents
like Stacey Ngwarai complain of chest pains and they say such kind of
industries must not be allowed to operate from residential areas.
”Yes, we have got an opportunity to use our talents and earn
a living through working for our neighbours in our community but we are also
concerned with our health. The sawdust that comes out of there and the wood
vanish they use are giving us health problems. Council should make sure the
people are properly moved to suitable places,” said Ngwarai.
