MASVINGO – Residents of Masvingo were horrified when the lifeless body of Masvingo Spar manager, Emmanuel Mwale was pulled out of the polluted waters of Mucheke River where he spend two days trapped in his car after being swept away while trying to drive across a flooded Chimusana Bridge on Sunday.
Mwale had dropped his friend Lovemore Mupambamwa with whom he was reportedly shared some drinks at Manhede beer hall in Mucheke.
Some cars are reported to have turned back when they saw that the bridge was flooded and they actually warned Mwale to turn back.
Mwale is said to have attempted to drive his Nissan X-Trail across the low-lying bridge but got swept away.
There are also reports that Mwale could have been drunk and fell into the river after missing the bridge.
A motorist driving behind Mwale, who witnessed the car disappearing into the water, then went to the police to make a report.
The eye-witness is said to have been drunk himself and he failed to give a consistent account of what he had seen.
Balmain Spar staff however made a police report of their missing manager the following day. The police launched a search and rescue that Monday morning but found nothing since the car had been swept further downstream and was buried in a deep pool.
A suspicious object which later turned out to be the missing car was noticed appearing in the pool on Tuesday, November 22, 2016 leading to the resumption of the search.
Three brave citizens jumped into the water and retrieved Mwale’s body which was still trapped in the car wreck.
Masvingo provincial police spokesperson, Inspector Charity Mazula took time to advise drivers to exercise caution when driving at night and in the rain.
“It is unfortunate that the case we were dealing with ended up in tragedy which claimed the life of Emmanuel Mwale.
“Drivers should be careful when driving during the rainy season so as to prevent any mishap that may come along the way. It is also important to avoid drinking and driving,” she said.News
