Two Masvingo school girls are set to join a team of six young golfers representing the country at a Tri Nations Golf tournament to be held from August 22-26 in Kitwe, Zambia.
The two are Miriam (13) and Modester (18) Masiya who are grade 7 and Lower six learners at St Don Bosco and Victoria High schools in Masvingo.
The Zimbabwe Ladies Golf Union (ZLGU) wrote a letter dated July 26, 2022 addressed to provincial presidents of the sport that the six selected golfers were required to represent Zimbabwe as they are the defending champions of the tournament.
“Congratulations to the juniors listed in below who will be representing the Zimbabwe team in the golf tournament which we are the defending champions. Please advise their club captains so that they can assist and encourage them with their practice programme.
“The team will be travelling together with the junior boys team, with a team manager and coach appointed by the Zimbabwe Junior Golf Association. Our girls will be travelling with Chaperone Evelyn Maisvoreva, the executive officer of ZLGU,” read part of the letter.
Masvingo Gold Club trainer Richard Masiya expressed confidence that the girls will raise the flag high in Zambia by winning the tournament.
“The girls have improved and are playing well. I am confident they will win at the tournament. Though it is their first time to represent the country, the way they have fared in the game really shows their capabilities of causing an upset at international level,” said Masiya.
He also said during the current school holiday, he is going to train quite a number of these young gems who have expressed interest in the sport.
“During this August school holiday, we are going to be training a total of 31 girls at Masvingo Sports Club who have already registered their willingness to join the sport and we expect more to come on board,” he added.
