Zaka – The Catholic-run Musiso High School is taking ICT education to a higher level after the school reached an agreement with parents at a recent Annual General Meeting that laptops should be compulsory for every pupil beginning next term.
Musiso school head, Modesta Tinago told parents that they were now expected to buy their kids laptops, iPods or smartphones to access the internet as per government expectations.
The new policy was adopted after extensive deliberations that saw the school making security commitments to ensure that children will only use the devices for academic purposes.
Parents were worried that information and communication technology devices like smartphones would be used by their children to do undesirable things such as unsanctioned communication and social media abuse.
The headmistress assured the parents that by the beginning of next term the school would have put security measures in place.
“We are not saying the laptops should be available to pupils now but by the beginning of next term they should have them and by then, we would have found some restrictive security measures to ensure the devices will only be used to improve education,” said Tinago.
Speaking at the AGM the District Education Officer (DEO), James Mahofa said schools were no longer supposed to worry about computer laboratories as computers should be a learning tool in every learning environment.
“We must not only build computer laboratories and end there. We have to make sure that computers become a standard in every lesson as a way of improving access to the latest knowledge,” said Mahofa.
He also urged other headmasters who attended the meeting to develop their schools and do away with a situation where they avoid enrolling their own children at schools they lead.education
