A deceitful Masvingo man ran out of luck after he was nabbed for faking his son’s death in a bid to defraud First Mutual Funeral Policy of over $1 500.
Godfrey Kutadza (47) of Mazarira Village, Chief Chikwanda appeared in court last Friday and has since been charged for fraud.
He pleaded guilty to accusations of faking his 18-year old son Shepherd Kutadza’s death in order to claim funeral assistance from the bereavement policy.
In mitigation, Kutadza, a general hand at Victoria Junior Primary School told the court that he had pressing financial challenges that forced him to commit the offence in the hope of getting some money from First Mutual Funeral Policy.
It is the State’s case that on 25 February 2016 Kutadza went to First Mutual Funeral Policy, represented by Simon Makwavaya and made a funeral cash request for the his son, Shepherd.
He then produced a Burial Order Number 86/16 to support his claim.
The attempted fraud was, however, scuttled after the funeral policy company made enquiries with Kutadza’s village head, Joseph Gundura who revealed that Kutadza had lied about his son’s death.
Masvingo Magistrate Langton Ndokera remanded Kutadza out of custody to the Wednesday, April 20 for sentencing.news
