CHIVI – Masvingo-based Black Omolo emerged this year’s winners of the Chibuku Road to Fame provincial finals held in Chivi last weekend.
Nine groups participated in the finals which were held at Huruyadzo Gardens at Chivi growth point.
For coming out tops, Black Omolo walked away US$500 richer and will compete for the US$7 000 first prize at the national finals. The first price will also carry a recording contract.
Band leader, Tafara Pande, said they were excited with their achievement.
“We are based in Mucheke High Density Suburb and this is our first time to participate in the competition.
“Our music is mainly Afro Jazz/Fusion and we hope to make Masvingo proud at the national finals,” said Pande.
Another Masvingo-based outfit, Orchestra Kururama came out second while Mashava-based Identity Band settled for third place.
Chibuku Road to Fame, which is sponsored jointly by the National Arts Council of Zimbabwe (NACZ) and Delta Beverages through its opaque beer brand, is held every year to promote upcoming groups which have not recorded their music before.
While all districts are expected to participate, only four districts took part in this year’s finals with Masvingo providing six groups.
The other groups came from Zaka, Chiredzi and Bikita.
