25 March 2017, MASVINGO – The Zimbabwe Energy Workers Union (Zewu) Masvingo last week embarked on a clean-up campaign at old Croco Motors bus terminus as part of belated commemorations of the International Women’s Day.
International Women’s Day, celebrated on March 8, is a global event celebrating the social, economic, cultural and political achievements of women. The day also serves as a call to action for the acceleration of efforts to achieve gender balance.
Speaking at the clean-up campaign, Piwai Marume, who is an executive member of Zewu in the province, praised efforts being made by the union to recognise women’s achievements.
“We decided to hold this clean-up campaign as a way of celebrating International Women’s Day and recognising women’s achievements. Women have achieved so much in the world despite being looked down upon by many. As Zewu, we are proud to partner the world in commemorating this day,” said Marume.
Formed in 1987, Zewu accommodates energy sector employees with most of the members drawn from the Zimbabwe Electricity Transmission and Distibution Company (ZETDC), Zimbabwe Power Company (ZPC), Rural Electrification Agency (Rea) Zesa Enterprises, Zimbabwe National Water Authority (Zinwa), PowerTel, Petrotrade, National Oil Company of Zimbabwe (NocZim) and PetroZimline.
The clean-up campaign was also supported by personnel from the Environmental Management Authority (Ema).local
