Chamisa: The Biblical Joshua that never was

By Brighton Chiseva

With Zimbabwe being largely a Christian nation where religion and politics are juxtaposed, the former Citizens Coalition for Change (CCC) leader Nelson Chamisa touted himself as the Biblical Joshua saying he will lead the people of Zimbabwe to the Promised Land full of milk and honey.
Chamisa gave himself the moniker ‘Biblical Joshua’ soon after the death of Movement for Democratic Change (MDC-T) leader Morgan Tsvangirai whom he equated to the Biblical Moses following his death on February 14, 2018 before defeating Zanu PF.
Equipped with oratory prowess, Chamisa made Zimbabweans dream again, as they had had during the Government of National Unity (GNU), with the youthful opposition leader quickly stealing hearts even as the hordes of MDC-T supporters were still mourning Tsvangirai, assuring all and sundry that indeed, ‘God is in it’.
Unlike in the biblical context however, the transition from Tsvangirai to Chamisa was full of contestation and betrayal that saw the division of the party, and ultimately the death of MDC as the main opposition brand name.
During Tsvangirai’s funeral for instance, Chamisa loyalists victimized Dr Thokozani Khupe, who was one of the MDC deputies, threatening her into unpopularity with opposition supporters who now saw her as a sellout, all thanks to Chamisa’s tricks.
Through it all, Chamisa still maintained grip on the opposition, working with former renegades Tendai Biti and Welshman Ncube who were leading People’s Democratic Party (PDP) and MDC-N respectively to consolidate a coalition movement (MDC-Alliance) that had been created by Tsvangirai.
At all rallies in the run up to the 2018 harmonized elections, Chamisa would call Ncube and Biti to the stage and ask them to confirm to supporters how Tsvangirai anointed him before his demise, giving hope to Zimbabweans.
The two would go on to reinforce claims that they were instructed to work with Chamisa as the leader of the MDC-Alliance, which some thought was a gimmick by Biti and Ncube who now sought a comeback as their respective parties were going under.
Flaunted as a youthful, vibrant and charismatic opposition leader, Chamisa however often got caught up in inconsistent statements and claims, which were mostly rubbished by allies and sympathizers as he kept assuring them that ‘God is in it’.
In many of his addresses since 2018, Chamisa has always been known for brandishing bible verses, including the fact that he was the biblical Joshua, promising to beat Mnangagwa in elections without breaking any sweat.
A rude awakening awaited come 2018 elections—the ‘Joshua’ failed to deliver on his promise as the Zimbabwe Electoral Commission (ZEC) announced Chamisa’s rival and ruling party Zanu PF leader President Emmerson Mnangagwa as the winner.
Realizing that the much anticipated results came back negative, Chamisa pulled the rigging card, rallied supporters to sing the same hymn, a narrative he still maintains until now, despite earlier claiming that just like the walls of Jericho, Zanu PF was as good as gone.
This was despite him coming back from losing MDC-Alliance to Douglas Mwonzora, to which he responded by creating a fresh opposition movement, Citizen Coalition for Change (CCC).
“Mr Mnangagwa is not prepared to win, he is plotting to rig. I told SADC that he stole the elections in 2018, this time I will not accept to allow him to rig the election again,” Chamisa said while addressing supporters in Harare in 2023.
Again, Chamisa’s envisioned Promised Land proved to be a pipe dream as Mnangagwa won again in 2023 dashing the hopes of poverty-stricken Zimbabweans who had seen an alternative in him.
More political mistakes cost him his new party, CCC in 2023, leading to recalls of many of his lieutenants who had been elected into Parliament and local authorities, despite him still commanding a large following.
In response to the 2023 post-election betrayal by little-known Sengezo Tshabangu, and later Biti, Ncube, Lynnete Karenyi-Kore and others, Chamisa jumped off-ship, folding into ambiguity, leaving supporters, sympathizers, and allies alike confused, while the land of honey and milk remains elusive.

Not the biblical Joshua

Analysts have said comparing Chamisa to the biblical Joshua is to overrate his capabilities as he has proven to be nowhere near the biblical figure, because many are wondering if God is really ‘in it’.
Dr Wellington Gadzikwa said the statement by Chamisa that ‘God is in it’ is a meaningless cliché he was hiding behind, adding that Chamisa should apply rules of the political game rather than hiding behind Bible verses.
“We don’t know which god he is talking about when he says that. Politics is a game that has rules and the rules of the game have to be applied.
“Chamisa cannot be the biblical Joshua unless in a cartoon series—he abandoned the people at a critical time and was not even apologetic. People had invested resources, time, emotions but he chose to go.
Dr Gadzikwa berated the Strategic Ambiguity theme used by the CCC from its infancy, saying it was Chamisa’s biggest undoing as a leader.
Political analyst Professor Charles Pfukwa said Chamisa being a good orator made him throw some religious metaphors in his speeches to appeal to Christians who constitute the majority of Zimbabweans, with a chunk of them desperate for economic change.
“Chamisa still has a long way to go until he has a chance to lead. I don’t see that happening soon but we can always wait for the ballot,” Prof Pfukwa said.

Losing grip on deployees

Despite announcing his decision to leave CCC on January 2, 2024 citing ruling party interference, Chamisa tried to influence parliamentarians and councilors elected under CCC to pull out of parliament and council, with only a paltry number complying.
Tshabangu who used Chmaisa’s ‘strategic ambiguity’ against its master facilitated the recalling of legislators, including two first and youngest female Mayors.
Chamisa attempted to maintain grip on remaining party deployees, which was in vain as their bid for reelection through by-elections failed dismally, and again, his faction lost leader-of-opposition in parliament where Tshabangu was elected to lead ahead of Chamisa loyalist Clifford Hlatshwayo.
Recently, Chamisa’s faction lost again when his loyalists instructed CCC mayors and council chairpersons not to attend the Chitepo School of Ideology seminar in Harare, an order which was ignored by all.
Only one mayor, David Coltart did not attend, because he had other pressing issues to attend to, showing that the CCC party has already bolted from the stable like a horse without the rider.
Political Scientist Dr Arthur Fidelis Chikerema said Chamisa came in when the country had no political freedom and confronted Zanu PF when it was not fashionable to do so but he lost direction along the way.
“When he was a student at Harare Polytechnic, mingling with student leaders from UZ and NUST, by then it was not easy, the political environment at that time was so closed, and brutal under Mugabe’s ruthless regime.
“Chamisa, Biti, Learnmore Jongwe and Job Sikhala were bold and courageous enough to confront the Mugabe regime against the formation of a one party state. Chamisa rose through the ranks from youth leader, spokesperson of the main wing, organizer of the main wing. Contesting the secretary general post despite losing to Douglas Mwonzora and later being appointed third VP.
“This guy’s history is so robust to a point where everyone had conviction that he will lead a political party and Zimbabwe at large.
“Unfortunately his transition from Tsvangirai was unconstitutional and was based on personal convictions. In the MDC Alliance, distribution of posts was not clear; Chamisa was pervasive. The only thing he wanted was to consolidate power at the top, which was not fair. He should have gone to congress rather than violently taking power from legitimate leader Khupe.
“At the moment, Chamisa is not in the right frame of mind. That is why some people are saying he is a project and people don’t have faith or trust in him though he still has support,” said Dr Chikerema.

What’s new for 2028?

Zimbabwe will go for another presidential election in 2028, an election which will likely see Chamisa returning to try his luck again in delivering his ‘Joshua’ promise to the multitude of change-desperate Zimbabweans.
While age may still be thinly on his side, proving to the young people why they should vote for him may be a mammoth task given the circumstances surrounding his political stamina.
It also remains a mystery if Chamisa will retain the same advisors who have made him look like a political jester, bringing into question his ability to lead the country.
Great Zimbabwe University Media lecturer Dr Last Alfandika Alfandika said Chamisa should at least step aside and help create a new, dynamic political challenge.
“While he still has relevance, I believe, it may be in another capacity. If he wishes to contest in 2028, it will be an unfortunate perpetuation of a cycle of incompetence and stagnation for opposition politics in Zimbabwe,” said Dr Alfandika.
Media lecturer Dr Gift Gwindingwe weighed in saying the way Chamisa came to lead the main opposition disqualified him from being the Joshua of Zimbabwe come 2028.
“There is nothing Joshuaic in Chamisa besides duping unsuspecting citizens with high-sounding nothings,” said Dr Gwindingwe.
Political commentator Dr Nicholas Aribino said unlike Chamisa, not at any given time did Joshua abandon his people with or without the intention of coming back.
“Joshua never left his flock; a shepherd cannot leave his flock at the mercy of vultures. A leader has a responsibility to stand with his followers and a duty of care that compels him or her to lead from the front,” said Dr Aribino.
He said the opposition had to think outside the box and lay strategies to counter Zanu PF if it so wishes for future elections, as the strategic ambiguity had proved disastrous for Chamisa and his party.
“Chamisa is damaged goods politically, if not a lost cause. He is now like a mosquito sitting on an elephant, politically speaking. Sometimes I think that he is a stage performer of the ruling party. Imagine just leaving 2m followers like that without having consulted them,” he said.

The cross of Christ as sacrifice

0

By Rev Dr Isiah Dhliwayo

At the heart of Christ’s sacrifice is not his physical body, but his love. The Catechism says: “It is love ‘to the end’ that confers on Christ’s sacrifice its value as redemption and reparation, as atonement and satisfaction. Christ comes from the Greek word χριστός (chrīstós), meaning “anointed one”. The word is derived from the Greek verb χρίω (chrī́ō), meaning “to anoint.”
The Cross demonstrates the ultimate act of love in that, compelled by love, Christ laid down His life for us – His church. We now live in His place because He died in our place. Without the Cross, there is no salvation because there is no redemption. Through His death, Christ paid the ultimate price. Most systematic expositions of the sacrificial character of the cross is found in Hebrews.(Gaybba 1988:71)
The cross of Christ as a sacrifice is a profound and central tenet of Christian thought and theology, embodying themes of love, redemption, atonement, and victory over sin and death. It serves as a reminder to believers of the depth of God’s love and the incredible gift of salvation offered through Jesus’ sacrifice on the cross. The strongest biblical testimony to the concept of the cross of Christ as a sacrifice is found in Hebrews.
According to Culpepper 1966,1988:68,the writer of Hebrews probably saw the soteriological symbolism of the cross as a hermeneutic key to the atonement.
The etymology of the word sacrifice is from the verb hilasakesthai (cf.Heb 2:17)and the noun hilasmos (cf 1 Jn 2:2;4:10) and denotes hilasterion( Rom 3:24-25), expiation by blood(Culpepper 1966,1988:69-70,Berkhof 1979:304)
In consummating His sacrifice on the cross Christ in one perfect gesture of devotion fulfilled all the moral, ceremonial, and juridical precepts of the Old Testament worship.
The sacrifice of the cross is humanity’s perfectly worshipful homage to the God of all history, and the Resurrection of Christ is the living testimony to God’s acceptance of mankind’s spotless sacrifice. In the paschal mystery Jesus, humanity’s high priest, offered Himself to God as an immolated victim.
All actions of Jesus, as humanity’s high priest, were empowered by measureless efficacy for reconciling mankind with God. But acts anterior to Calvary lacked the specifically sacrificial meaning of the sacrifice of the cross. Sacrifice is an act of external worship; in it the interior act of religion, through which a creature pays homage to God and is united with Him, must be set forth under a recognizable symbol of visible oblation.
However one may ask this view with the question as to whether Jesus’ brutal death was necessary for the expiation of sin?It is a question of the tension between a gracious, loving and merciful God and the iustitia distributiva, retributive justice.

Masvingo War vets resist Mnangagwa third term bid

By Brighton Chiseva

War veterans in Masvingo have resisted President Emmerson Mnangagwa’s third term bid, calling for him to respect the constitution by leaving office at the end of his second term in 2028.
Speaking to TellZim News, one war veteran Western Ezrah from Masvingo said it was unfortunate that some people were misleading the President asking him to break the constitution.
He said those pushing for the third term were mad and should think again before they force for the president to break the constitution.
“In 2013, the people of Zimbabwe, whom we liberated through the war of liberation, wrote a constitution. “The same people whom we freed are the ones calling for the breaking of the same constitution they wrote. Calling for a third term is madness, the constitution is clear and the president should abide by it. So those who are pushing him to continue are really mad,” said Ezrah.
He went on to say the party had clear guidelines and those pushing for the third term had no idea where the party came from nor where it is going.
Asked on who should take over, he said it was clear from the presidium.
“People do not know where Zanu PF is coming from and if you look closely you will see that those calling for the extension of the term limit have no background of the liberation and the party itself.
“The party has a hierarchy and that hierarchy was used since the war of liberation and if you look at the presidium you will see who is supposed to take over. Even culturally, the elders eat first and because we are a cultured people, the elders lead first in their order,” said Ezra.
Another war veteran Retired Major General Gibson Mashingaidze said he was a constitutionalist just like the President who announced that he will leave after his second term.
“I am a constitutionalist just like the President, I survived a number of processes within Zanu PF because I am constitutionalist. So as a constitutionalist I think the President should follow the constitution just like he promised. We all heard him saying he will step down when his second term lapses,” said General Mashingaidze.
Another war veteran who refused to be named said the constitution was clear and as war veterans they believe in transfer of power and following the constitution saying those who were pushing for the third term were benefitting something at the expense of others.
“We believe in the constitution, and the army is there to protect the constitution and will do that when need arises,” said the war vet.
The calls by war vets reveal deep rooted factionalism within the ruling party between Mnangagwa and his deputy Chiwenga.
Chiwenga has support from the army and the war veterans.
The third term call was started by Masvingo Province earlier this year and other provinces went on to adopt the stance saying they wanted the President to make sure that he achieves his 2030 vision while he is still at the helm.
However, the call sparked debates with junior party members being alleged to be against the third term.
Zanu PF Masvingo Provincial leader,Robson Mavhenyengwa, who was once touted to be from Chiwenga faction, said those who were against the third term were not Zanu PF because the provincial decision was made after consultations with relevant party structures.
“We own the decision, it was not made overnight but it was after consultations with others. I am the chairperson so the provincial decision is mine though,” said Mavhenyengwa

By Rangarirai Shanyurai

Masvingo Christian Academy under 16 soccer team has been invited to participate in eighth edition of the Mai Hondo Memorial Tournament in Mutare on August 30 and 31, 2024.
The tournament features 16 teams for boys, 12 girls’ soccer teams and four girl’s netball teams from across the country.
Masvingo Christian Academy head of development George Charumbira said, the team had been training for long and is well prepared for the tournament.
“I am very excited for this opportunity and believe that our juniors will gain valuable exposure to higher level of competition and experience from playing away games.
“Playing away from home will provide the juniors with a unique opportunity to test their skills development against a new team in a different environment and showing their talents,” said Charumbira.
Mai Hondo Youth Sports Trust is a youth focused organization that leverages on the Universal appeal of sports and music to reach young boys and girls on issues relating to their broader social development.
The Trust hosts the annual Mai Hondo Sports Tournament which started in 2015. In its eighth edition now, the tournament has seen over five thousand young people directly participating in soccer and netball matches, with several thousand other youth and community members participating as spectators.
Mai Hondo Youth Sport spokesperson Trust Tapiwa Mbutsa said Mai Hondo sports tournament focusses on grassroots soccer development, positive youth development through sport and community awareness on various aspects of life.
“A major goal of these tournaments is to provide services and raise awareness among youth on Sexual and Reproductive Health (SRH), Gender Based Violence (GBV), drug and substance abuse, mental health care, career guidance and civic participation among other social issues. It targets under 15 boys and girls as direct participants across soccer and netball disciplines.
“It targets communities through providingservices such as HIV testing, cervical cancer screening, circumcision, family planning services and condom distribution.
“The tournament gives youths an opportunity to compete and improve their soccer and netball skills. Having become a regular event on the Manicaland sports calendar, the community looks forward to the tournament.
It started as an event solely for Mutare teams but participants have over the years been drawn from across Zimbabwe,” said Mbutsa.
He lamented shortage of sporting equipment in teams across the country and said all teams were going to get prizes for participating.
“Sporting equipment is a major challenge for many youths teams across the country. The tournament has a flat prizes and awards structure that allows all participants to get at least a prize.
“In the past eight years, the tournament has distributed close to 100 sets complete soccer kits (minimum of 18 jerseys and shorts per set) and 350 soccer balls and training bibs. Prizes include school fees vouchers, educational materials, trophies, grocery hampers and training scholarship for coaches,” he said
Mutare based Sheckon Stars won the inaugural 2015 tournament, 2016 and 2018. In 2017, Ajax Academy from Harare lifted the trophy. La Sakubva FC from Mutare won the 2019 and 22 edition whilst another Mutare junior team City Vellos was crowned 2023 champions.
In girls netball, Mutare’s Nyamauru High School scooped the 2017 tittle and Faith Drive won the 2018, 2019, 2023 editions while Mutare City won the 2022 tournament.

Broke Zaka RDC operating with one vehicle

… Struggle to pay workers

By Brighton Chiseva

Service delivery at Zaka Rural District Council is at stake as the local authority is operating with only one service vehicle that is being used by the Chief Executive Officer (CEO) and is struggling to pay workers who are involved in day to day business of the council.
This was revealed in a full council meeting held at the local authority boardroom in Jerera Growth Point where it was noted that two council vehicles were involved in accidents on different incidents and only one that the CEO uses was operational putting service delivery at risk.
He also appealed to the council to consider purchasing a new and smaller vehicles to be used by management to promote service delivery in the district.
“Two council vehicles were involved in accidents on separate occasions and they are both being attended to by our insurer. Only one vehicle that I use is currently up and running, I am appealing to council to consider one of its resolutions to purchase vehicles to save the situation,” said Majaura
He also pointed out that the local authority was struggling to pay workers and was in four months arrears as they had managed to clear the arrears from last year to March this year.
“We have salary arrears from the month of March to June since we managed to clear some months that backdated from last year and we are left with arrears from March to June this year,” said Majaura
The finance committee presentation revealed the council’s predicament on salaries but the full council demanded that they be given the total amount they owe council workers. The committee however declined saying they could not discuss people’s salaries in an open meeting.
“The council should just know it has salary arrears of about four months and I don’t think discussing the amount of each worker is necessary. At least we are happy that we managed to clear some of the months and has cleared USD balance for some of the outstanding months,” said ward 23 Councilor Chrispen Watadza.
However, the audit committee noted with concern that council managers going for work related meeting and workshops were failing to bring requisite paperwork like receipts and invoices of their allowances thereby compromising transparency.
The committee recommended that anyone who goes out on council business should account for all financial vouchers within seven days and anyone who goes beyond a month will see some cash being deducted from his or her account.

Masvingo’s young model gets Junior Primary Scholarship

By Beverly Bizeki

Her name is Dillish Makatendeka Masango; indeed she is living up to the definition of her name, Dillish which means ‘we are happy’.
She has made both her family and the people around her happy, which has become the talk of the town, conquering world stages at such a tender age.
Masango who is only six years old is defying odds, and proving the point that hard work pays off after she was being awarded a scholarship at one of the most prestigious schools in Masvingo, Junior Primary by the company Junior Private Limited.
Junior Schools Director Noah Marima confirmed the development and said the school had awarded Masango the scholarship that would enable her to learn Cambridge curriculum and lessen the fees burden on her parents.
“She (Dillish) is doing well in modelling and her engagement and peer influence are out of this world. So, giving her a scholarship to learn at a Cambridge centre would further help her grow since the Cambridge curriculum demands diversity in problem solving. It is also a gesture of corporate social responsibility,” said Marima.
Masango’s mother, Rumbidzai Chisangowerotah could not hide her happiness over the recent opportunity that her daughter got and thanked the staff at her former school Victoria Primary for the investment and effort placed on the young model’s journey so far.
“I am happy for the recognition my daughter got from Junior Compan, Mr and Mrs Marima. i want to thank them for the oppotunity and it is my hope that Dillish will make the best out of it. however, she would not have made it this far if had not gotten support from Vic Junior. I consider the institution as the best government school in Zimbabwe as they have helped in molding Dillish into a first-class learner and now here is she. I am also grateful to Dr Mashuro (school head) and the entire staff as well as Mr Chengeta who ran around tirelessly trying to secure Dillish a first position in all her endeavors,” said Chisangowerotah.
Masango made headlines in the modelling world after she was first crowned Miss Victoria Primary School at the age of five in 2022 and later won two more beauty pageants, Queen of Masvingo Primary Schools and Toto Miss Africa Zimbabwe.
She later went on to represent her motherland, Zimbabwe in Nigeria where she bagged three titles, second runner up Little Mr and Miss Toto Africa, Miss Smile and Miss Popularity after which she was supposed to participate in Florida, United States of America at the World Imperial Beauties.
Masango who also recently won First Princess title at the Face of Kids Teen and Hub pageant and is tipped for another pageant, Miss Phenomenal Africa where she will be representing Zimbabwe.

Social soccer club, Strikers FC won the Masvingo Youth Champions Trophy at the tournament held at Mucheke Stadium from August 14 to 16, 2024.
Strikers FC lifted the trophy after winning 1-0 against LOG FC in the finals making them gold winners and champions of the tournament.
The tournament was organized as a way of fighting against drug and substance abuse, child, marriages as well as bringing entertainment for youths in and around Masvingo urban.
Strikers FC coach Doubt Banda said winning the tournament was a big achievement and it’s not the outcome that matters but the journey they traveled.
“Winning is always a great feeling, but for us it’s also just about the journey and the growth we have experienced as a team.
“We were runners-up for the previous tournament which wasn’t our best. So this win is dedicated to our supporters who despite losing the previous tournament came to support us and would like to thank the players and our patron Prophet Charles Makaya for making us reach this far by running the team’ logistics,” said Banda.
Pangolin Giants coach Tafadzwa Maguranye, said he was excited with the opportunity to showcase his team’s talent.
“It felt great for my team to participate at this tournament. It was a great chance for both coaches and players to showcase their abilities though we did not win,” said Maguranye.
SanSiro FC coach Martin Mberikwazvo said he was confident his team would win because they had put a lot of effort, though the tournament proved to be tough for them
“As a coach, I expected my team to win, and I was very confident that we will win the tournament, as we had prepared well for it however we did not win as per our expectation but next time we will win,”
“However, we are happy that the tournament lived up to its expectations of promoting youth development and discouraging drug and substance abuse,” said Mberikwazvo.
One of the tournament sponsors, Masvingo City Women’s Quota Councilor Alaica Time said she sponsored the tournament because the young boys got entertainment and refrain from committing crime.
Another sponsor Ronald Mberikunashe said he supported the tournament with money for logistics that ensured the tournament was inclusive and accessible to all members of the community.
The teams which participated include Lavlum FC, Chinemhere FC, Pangolin Giants, LOG FC, Masvingo Christian College, KC Academy, SanSiro FC, Damusa FC, and Hotscre FC.
The tournament was a follow-up of the Hazel Nhamburo Tournament held in April 2024, where Masvingo Christian College faced Strikers FC in the finals.

We are struggling, provincial heroes’ widows tell Min Chadzamira

By Tatiana Mhararira

Thousands of people from Masvingo province gathered at Masvingo Provincial Acre on August 12, 2024 to pay tribute to the heroes who passed away and celebrate the legacy of those who are still alive.
Among them were widows and family members of the heroes who were buried at the provincial shrine who told the Minister of State for Provincial Affairs and Devolution Ezra Chadzamira who was the Guest of honour, that they were struggling to make ends meet.
They raised school fees challenges, employment and some complained over maintenance of graves at the shrine where some of them have no tombstones.
“We have not yet benefitted from the war veteran beneficiary scheme thus we are having a challenge in paying school fees for the orphans left,” said one widow.
Another one complained about the state of graves saying some still had no tombstones despite that they were there for some years now.
“It’s been long since our relative died but there is no a tombstone, how can you treat a hero like this? We are also struggling financially, our children are not employed so the government has to create employment for us and our children,” said another widow.
However, Chadzamira responded saying they were not supposed to wait for events like Heroes day to tell government about their challenges.
“We have noted all your concerns, however, I implore you not to wait for events like this, you can also submit your concerns through the Permanent Secretary Dr Addmore Pazvakavamwa’s office.
However, despite challenges faced by living war veterans and families of the fallen heroes, those who spoke to TellZim News said the day was special to them as it gives them time to reflect on the sacrifices made to liberate the country.
One war veteran, Macken Dhorobheni, whose liberation name was Bayai Zvichatenda said the Heroes Day is important to him as he got to remember the heroes who fought for the independence of Zimbabwe.
“We have the Independence Day the day we got our liberation but the ones who fought for us to have independence are the heroes whom we remember on this special day so we should give value to the day,” said Dhorobheni.
Winnet Chikupe a wife to the late hero Victor Chikupe said the Heroes Day commemorations hold a special significance to her as they get the time to pay tribute to the heroes with the assistance of other Zimbabweans.
“I am here with my family to remember my husband Victor Chikupe and this day gives us an opportunity to remember these heroes and their participation in the liberation struggle, having such a day signifies their importance in our country,” said Chikupe.
One Masvingo resident Sithabile Sibanda said it was a great honour to remember those who sacrificed their lives for Zimbabwe to have freedom.
“On heroes’ day we honour those who sacrificed their lives for Zimbabwe’s freedom from colonial rule. A number of fighters lost their lives and some developed permanent injuries which they are still surviving with. I hold this day so dearly in my heart thanking everyone who gathered here to remember these heroes,” said Sibanda.
The commemorations were packed with entertainment from Masvingo Teachers College dance group, Great Zimbabwe University traditional, dance Zimbabwe National Army band and a heroes day poem by Khloe Katlego Mliswa a daughter to former member of parliament Temba Mliswa who is in Grade 3 at Kyle Preparatory school.
Also present was Masvingo Mayor Councillor Alec Tabe, families of the heroes, members from the Fallen Heroes Trust, war veterans and their leadership, ex- detainees, ex restrictees and war collaborators, chiefs, principals from colleges, vice chancellors from universities, councillors, members of parliament and service chiefs.
The event was curtained by sporting events which saw ZPCS soccer team crushing ZRP with three goals to one, from the netball desk ZRP won 90 goals to 2 against ZPCS and each winning team walked away with the Heroes Day trophy which was presented by Provincial Coordinator Sports and Recreation Commission Mayibongwe Sibanda.
