Mandebvu convicted, gets 2-year jail term

By Perpetua Murungweni

After months of delays and excuses, Zanu PF Masvingo provincial youths chairperson Delight Mandebvu’s court was finally concluded, with magistrate Franklin Mukwanazi sentencing him to two years in prison.
However, Mkwananzi wholly suspended the jail term after considering that the accused suffered a broken leg, which medical reports indicated was permanently damaged, during the scuffle. The suspended sentence was also on condition that Mandebvu does not commit a similar offense for the next five years.
It was the State’s case as presented by prosecutor Godknows Mugondo that on March 2, 2024 Mandebvu assaulted former Masvingo City Mayor Collen Maboke and his wife after the latter’s car side-swapped the vehicle in which Mandebvu was traveling in along the Masvingo-Nyika road.
Mandebvu turned and pursued Maboke’s vehicle that was being driven by his wife and blocked it after 10km and he, together with his associates started beating up the two.
The case dragged for a long time as the accused person has been coming up with one excuse after another.
At one point Mandebvu, went on to file attempted murder charges against Maboke alleging that he was hit by Maboke’s vehicle, not by any other vehicle as was reported.
The other time Mandebvu told the court that he wanted to look for a lawyer outside Masvingo because the lawyers around were friends with Maboke hence they were compromised.

Regency Hotels struggling to pay workers

By Staff Reporter

MASVINGO – Regency Group of Hotels management is failing to pay its workers with some going for more than four months without salaries.
Regency Hotels runs Flamboyant, Chevron and Panyanda in Masvingo as well as Fairmile Hotel in Gweru.
Contacted for comment, Regency Hotels Managing Director Edison Zvobgo Junior who is also Masvingo Central MP could neither confirm nor deny as he said there were some challenges which had since been resolved.
“I have no comment on that matter but what I can simply say is that there were some temporary challenges that have since been addressed,” said Zvobgo.
Sources within the organisation said the salary issue had been taken to the National Employment Council (NEC) and the Zimbabwe Catering and Hotel Workers Union (ZCHWU). The hotel management was said to have tried but in vain to persuade workers to withdraw the matter.
ZCHWU regional organizing secretary Elliot Madzore confirmed that his organisation was dealing with the matter but referred questions to his superiors.
“Yes we are dealing with the matter but I cannot give you more details as I am not allowed to speak to the media, you should talk to my superiors for a detailed comment,” said Madzore.
However, sources said ZCHWU had since given Regency an ultimatum to clear all the salary arrears before they take up the matter.
“They are paying workers in batches and so far they have only paid 10 people for the month of March and they only paid the ZIG component and the rest are yet to get their salaries. However, they were given seven days to clear the arrears and if they fail the matter will be taken up to labor court.
“The matter was taken to NEC and we have had several meetings with the management which is trying to persuade the workers to withdraw the cases and pursue internal processes. The workers are irked by the fact that the management is not showing any remorse, rather they are boastful, arrogant and too reluctant to address the salary arrear issues,” said one of the employees who spoke on condition of anonymity.
Another source said there was serious mismanagement of the organisation which is witnessed by the deterioration of services and infrastructure which is in dilapidating state.
“Standards are getting down every day at all the hotels, there is no maintenance of infrastructure, and there are very old beds and linen, the workers have no motivation so the services are also getting lower,” said another source.
Flamboyant Hotel used to be one of the best in Masvingo town but the standards continue to deteriorate and is left at the mercy of those clients who want to book there or Chevron because of its proximity to town.

Masvingo RDC re-introduces clinic levies at all council health facilities

By Staff Reporter

In a sad development, Masvingo Rural District Council has reintroduced a clinic levy on all its health facilities in the district ending a 10 year free access to health care services.
Masvingo RDC chairperson Elias Jera confirmed the development to TellZim News saying the move was necessitated by high operational costs since donors who were funding the costs for the past decade had pulled out.
A notice was flighted by the local authority giving specifications of the levy which is effective from August 01, 2024 where adults are expected to pay US$1 whilst children will be paying US$0.50. Pregnant women will be expected to pay US$5 per pregnancy.
“Please be advised that council is re-introducing clinic levies in council clinics with effect from August 1 as follows. Adults US$ 1 per visit, children US$0.50 per visit, maternity US$5 per visit. The move has been necessitated by clinics’ running costs,” reads the notice.
Jera said they were aware of the difficult situation villagers were facing especially in rural areas but had no better options than to levy them operational costs only.
“We reintroduced the levy that had been stopped in 2014. We used to have donors who were funding these operational costs but sadly the funding partner pulled out recently, therefore, we had no other option than to reintroduce the levy so that we cover the operational costs,” said Jera.
“We are aware that people are struggling and they hardly afford to pay for the health care services but this was the only viable option if we are to sustain these clinics. Villagers will only pay operational costs,” he added.
The health facilities were being funded on a programme called Result Based Financing (RBF).
Access to health is expensive and dire as most health facilities have no medication and usually people go there to get prescriptions that they will use to buy medication from pharmacies.

‘Runyoka’ suffering man sets camp at married lover’s home

By Brighton Chiseva

ZAKA – A Bikita young man will rue the day he lustfully developed an adulterous relationship and having sexual intercourse with a married woman after he started experiencing severe stomach pains allegedly caused by juju popularly known as ‘runyoka’.
Nelson Matupire is said to have since relocated and camped at the woman’s place saying he will not leave until her husband cleanses him.
Matupire confirmed the development to TellZim News and said he was in pain for the past 12 Months and was appealing to well-wishers who can help him or refer to someone who can help him.
“I met the lady in BeitBridge and we got intimate after she had separated from her husband. After that I began to have problems, I have something like an STI on the privates and I feel like there are small insects that come out from there and fly leaving irritants (Uriri/unye) similar to hurukuru (The buffalo bean).
“When I tried to establish the problem that’s when I learnt that I had slept with a lady who was locked (akaiswa runyoka/Rukawo). When I tried to engage them they had reconciled and they both ran away and I struggled for a very long time. We visited faith healers who told me that the lady’s husband was responsible for my illness but he denies,” said Matupire.
He went on to say the lady only came back after she also started suffering from severe stomach aches which she later learnt was from the same charm put on her by her husband and she is now cooperating.
“The woman is now suffering from stomach aches and she was told it’s because of the charm put on her that was making her sick. So I am now staying at her place but the husband is still slippery,” said Matupire.
Asked how he was staying with a married woman in the absence of her husband, Matupire said they were just staying because of the situation and there was nothing going on between them and said he felt better if he is at the place and it gets worse if he goes back to his home.
“If I go back home, the pain increases and its better if I am here that is why I am staying but there is nothing between us and we cannot risk another engagement since she is also suffering. I have been in and out of police custody as I often clash with the family,” said Matupire.
Magadzire Village head Isaiah Zirumbwa Magadzire, where the woman comes from, confirmed the incident and said they were trying to assist Matupire but the biggest challenge was that the alleged perpetrator is nowhere to be found.
“The young man met this lady who is married in Beitbridge after she had separated with her husband. The two got intimate and the man started suffering from stomach pains in which he says he felt things like worms moving up and down his stomach.
“After the incident, the woman’s husband then followed up on his wife and they reconciled, however, the man continued suffering until he came here to engage the woman’s husband,” said Zirumbwa.
“The challenge now is that the alleged perpetrator denied having used any locking system (juju) and has since disappeared. So what we did is to seek help from the police to intervene and make sure that the man stays.
“As it stands they are staying together and Matupire sleeps in another room. Before, he used to sleep outside. We warned them against intimacy as that could worsen the situation,” he added.
He also appealed to those who may help the young man as he was suffering saying he has been getting help from different churches and now it’s better, “said Zirumbwa.

ZB Financial Holdings hosts Midlands SMEs Expo

By Tinaani Nyabereka

Gweru — The ZB Financial Holdings hosted a successful Small and Medium Enterprises (SMEs) Expo at Gweru Sports Club last Saturday July 27.
The Midlands SMEs Expo was held under the theme; ‘Accelerating SME Growth through Financial Partnerships,’ with an objective to enhance collaboration and support to Zimbabwe’s Micro, Small, and Medium Enterprises (MSMEs).
Speaking at the event, Minister of State for Midlands Provincial Affairs and Devolution, Owen Ncube applauded ZB Financial Holdings for its leadership and commitment to advancing the MSME sector.
“Zimbabwe’s economy, noting that they account for over 60% of economic activities, provide 4.8 million full-time jobs, and contribute USD 7.8 billion to the GDP. Despite this significant impact, MSMEs face challenges such as inadequate business management skills, limited mentorship, and poor access to markets, workspace, and affordable finance.
“The government’s efforts, guided by the MSMEs Policy Framework (2020-2024), include promoting access to finance through various funds and Savings and Credit Cooperatives (SACCOS), facilitating market access in partnership with ZimTrade, offering business and technical skills training, and encouraging the adoption of standards and product certification. Additionally, efforts to formalize MSMEs through business registration are ongoing,” said Ncube.
“Participants at the Expo are set to benefit from financial literacy training, opportunities to explore diverse funding avenues, and interactions with financial institutions to identify tailored financial products. The event also highlights sustainability practices through the Grow a Tree Foundation and provides insights into public procurement opportunities.” He added.
Speaking at the same event, Standard Association of Zimbabwe (SAZ) representative, Nyasha Mutseyekwa said they were there to work with SMEs in coming up with fine standards.
“So as Standard Association, we are not responsible for making standards, rather we invite other important stakeholders – be it academia, retailers, researchers, etc, so that they assist you. We want you to bring your products for testing before taking them to the market,” said Mutseyekwa.
“The benefit of us testing your products as MSMEs is, you get the market value and quality of your product. Even if you want to get a loan, once your products are certified, it brings in confidence to the lenders,” Mutseyekwa added.

By Faith Nyagura

The abandoned match between Eastern Region Soccer League log leaders FC Wangu Mazodze and Mutare City Rovers a fortnight ago was replayed over the week, with the Masvingo based outfit edging Mutare City by a goal to nil.
The win saw FC Wangu Mazodze extending their lead on the log table with 12 points clear of second placed Tenax FC.
FC Wangu Mazodze and Mutare City continued the play from the 52-minute where the previous match was abandoned, with the former holding on to the 1-nil lead until the refree blew the final whistle after 90 minutes.
The kingdom Boys, as FC Wangu Mazodze is popularly known, are yet to taste defeat in the league this season having won 13 matches and drew three games.
FC Wangu Mazodze is now on 42 points,12 points clear of the second placed Tenax FC, with Mutare City Rovers on third position with 28 points.
Wangu Mazodze FC chairperson Trevor Chateuka expressed pride in the team’s performance, saying they aim to maintain the winning streak.
“Our boys are playing well and we want to continue with this form and stay at the top,” said Chateuka
The Kingdom Boys’ head coach John Nyikadzino said despite the midweek scheduling, the team was optimistic about maintaining the winning formula.
“We’ve signed two new players to boost the team, and we are confident of maintaining our performance,” said Nyikadzino.
Mutare City Rovers coach Kennedy Kachara attributed their loss to a goalkeeping blunder, saying, they failed to utilise the chances they got.
The match was poorly attended probably because of the midweek schedule.

…Tagwirei, Chimuka, Kondongwe, Chadzamira attend the church service

By Jabulani Charumbira

MASVINGO – The Seventh Day Adventist’s (SDA) Zimbabwe Central Union Conference (ZCUC) – Adventist laymen’s Services and Industries (ASI) function held on July 27, 2024 at Masvingo Showground, where over 5 000 members attended, ended on a high note.
The event was attended by top business persons Kudakwashe Tagwirei, Masvingo based Stanley Kondongwe, Obey Chimuka and the Minister of State for Provincial Affairs and Devolution Ezra Chadzamira.
Hundreds of congregants including the elderly and widows among other vulnerable groups went back home with smiles on their faces as they received groceries donated by Tagwirei, Kondongwe and Chimuka
The total consignment included 30 tons of mealie meal, 30 tons of beans and 30 000 litres of cooking oil.
Speaking to TellZim News, many beneficiaries thanked the trio for extending their hands to assist the less privileged during these difficult times worsened by the El Nino-induced drought.
“I am grateful; I want to thank them for the food hampers. There is serious drought caused by El Nino so I was struggling to put food on the table. May the Good Lord bless them,” said one of the beneficiaries.

Chadzamira said the event did not only provided a spiritual experience for the SDA community but also demonstrated the power of collaboration and the commitment of Zimbabwean business leaders to support their communities.

Zanu PF wields axe on young MPs

…face chop for resisting ED third term agenda
…development suffers as succession factional fights take centre stage

By Beverly Bizeki

A faction in Zanu PF pushing for President Emmerson Mnangagwa to have a third term has come out guns blazing pushing for the ouster of young party parliamentarians whom they accuse of sabotaging the 2030 agenda as well as lacking the party ideology, TellZim can reveal.
Speaking to TellZim News on condition of anonymity for fear of victimization, some Members of Parliament (MPs) said they were living in constant fear as the party heavyweights were pushing for their ouster, and the problem started when Zanu PF almost lost to opposition Citizens Coalition for Change (CCC) when they voted for the Public Voluntary Organisation (PVO) bill in parliament.
“Tiri panguva yakaoma (we are in difficult times); the problem started when we voted for the PVO bill in parliament and Zanu almost lost to opposition. It was later realized that most of the young MPs from the party had just logged in and went out.
“We are now being accused of resisting the push for President to have another term as well as lacking party ideology. There biggest fear is, if the opposition MPs move motion to impeach the President, they think we will support that,” said one youthful MP.
Another Zanu PF legislator, who claims to be a war veteran, confirmed that the young MPs were betraying the party.
“They have no ideology; they are dealers so what they do is, they come to Parliament and sign the register and after that they get in town to run their errands. We almost lost to CCC legislators when we voted for the PVO bill. Something needs to be done or else the party is in serious problem,” he said.
However, the Zanu PF chief whip Pupurai Togarepi who is also the MP for Gutu South downplayed the factional fights in the ruling party saying the Zanu PF had trust in its legislators.
“All our MPs are cadres of the party who were deployed to represent Zanu PF in parliament because of their loyalty and consistency. All our MPs have gone through several ideological orientation through the Chitepo School of Ideology which makes them very sound and grounded. The leadership is happy with the performance of the young MPs. I urge you to ignore the nonsense coming from uninformed sources,” said Togarepi.
Eight provinces had since endorsed Mnangagwa to extend his term beyond 2028, though the President indicated that he will step down at the end of his second term. The call for a third term from Mnangagwa’s supporters has deeply divided Zanu PF, with those resisting the extension allegedly being targeted to be chopped off.
However, the succession fights started barely a year after the elections and this has negatively affected development in the country, with the economy showing no signs of growth and stability.
Media lecturer and political analyst Dr Wellington Gadzikwa said the succession disputes existing within the ruling party could mean no development for the country for the next four years.
“The nature of our election which is after every five years derail development in that politicians only do something in the first two years and only come back to the electorate seeking reelection hence anti-development. Now that there are succession disputes in Zanu PF we are less likely to see anything meaningful (in terms of development) during this term unlike in the President’s first term.
“This term is likely going to be filled by third term politics and this is further made worse by the lack of a true opposition in the country. There is a lot of uncertainties in the country,” said Dr Gadzikwa.
University of Zimbabwe Lecturer Professor Eldred Masunungure weighed in and said the ruling party was likely to engage in power games foregoing development and said factionalism was imminent which he said was bad for national development.
“The sad reality is that the infatuation with power at the apex of the ruling party is something that goes back to the founding of the party and succession-induced gladiation for power is one of the hallmarks of the organisation. Power, and gaining or retaining it supersedes everything else including national development; that is, development plays second fiddle to power games. It is indeed weird but not unprecedented for Zanu PF to start playing these power games soon after the last election and not necessarily towards the next election,” said Prof Masunungure.
“Another tragic consequence of these games of power is that they will be fought along factional lines not only in the party but also in the state. State structures will be infected by the factionalism virus leading to dysfunctionality or compromised performance in terms of delivery of national policies and programmes. This will be likely so for the next four years thus paralyzing policy formation and implementation. State employees, especially at the top level will be pigeon-holed into factional camps and this will poison their working relationships. In short succession-fed factionalism is bad for national development,” Prof Masunungure added.
Another political commentator Dr Gift Gwindingwe said competition in the party was imminent but however said the country was likely to witness meaningful development as the ruling party tries to market itself for the next election in 2028.
“I foresee a political field that is explosive within Zanu PF with individuals strategically positioning themselves. We have those with realistic chances of getting into the party presidium and those who have little or no hope of getting into the party presidium and these will strategically position themselves closer with direct overtures. There is likely going to be jostling for positions at both levels.
“So with this democratic space opened by the President’s pronouncement to rest after the expiry of his second term, there is likely to be intense competition. But the good thing is that there will be an elective congress.
“I actually foresee meaningful development so that the ruling government markets itself astutely for the watershed 2028 election. Politics and development are inseparable so there is a mathematical line between the two. The ruling Zanu PF government cannot afford to go to sleep at this moment because outside, other political competitors are sharpening their ‘swords’ as well,” said Dr Gwindingwe.
Despite the ongoing debates on whether or not Mnangagwa was going to retire and his party supporters pushing for a third term, legal experts with the likes of Professor Lovemore Madhuku have said this was a pipeline dream for the party supporters, saying it was a little too late to change the constitution.

Zanu PF grasping at straws

Ladies and gentlemen hear me out when I say that the regime is becoming more and more dangerous by the day. I am having nightmares here at Chitima everyday kuti ndokaruka ndanzi dzvii, because unlike many, Mapombi is known for running her mouth and calling out Baba Two and crew’s nonsense. It also does not help that it’s coming at a time when Kenya is still reeling from protests—protests that could not be attributed to any political party nor a tribe. Neshuro, Nikita win inaugural Mwenezi CEO’s trophy

By Decide Nhendo

Mwenezi District’s Neshuro and Nikita High Schools were recently crowned netball and soccer champions, respectively for the inaugural Mwenezi Rural District Council’s (RDC) CEO’s tournament.
The trophy is being sponsored by Mwenezi RDC and Mwenezi West Member of Parliament (MP) Priscilla Moyo Zindari. Six schools participated during the inaugural tournament namely Neshuro High, Nikita High, Budirirai High, Mayezi Secondary, Maranda High and Tafara Secondary Schools.
Speaking to TellZim News, Zindari who added cash prizes for the winners said the tournament was important as it gave learners exposure and at the same time good mental and physical health.
“The tournament is important because it helps maintain learners’ physical and mental health, it is also important because the time spent during games will prevent them from doing bad things like drug and substance abuse.
“Council took a bold step leading by example in supporting learners’ games that is why I have also chipped in with cash prizes to complement council’s efforts,” said Zindari.
Neshuro netball team coach Stephen Mpofu applauded Mwenezi RDC for supporting schools sports in the district.
“We are grateful; the tournament exposed our players and we will work hard to defend the title next year. The tournament also helped us to prepare for other tournaments that are coming,” said Mpofu.
Dorren Muchara applauded her netball team saying it was foreseeable that they would win the tournament because of the quality netball players they have.
“Neshuro netball team outclassed other schools because it has excellent players, scouters must come to rural areas to look for talent because most of the players like those in Neshuro fit in any professional team. They should be given chance to showcase their talents at national level,” said Muchara.
Neshuro and Nikita got $450 each for coming first in Netbal and Soccer respectively. The two teams also got $200 each for coming second; that is, Nikita in netball and Neshuro in soccer.
Maranda High came third in netball, while Budirirai High took the same spot in soccer and both teams received US$150 each. Tafara Secondary and Mayezi Secondary were number four and walked away with $100 each.
