ZIFA Eastern Region Division 1 log leaders FC Wangu Mazodze had their hopes of securing promotion into Zimbabwe’s top flight Premier Soccer League in jeopardy after they were held to a disappointing 1 all draw to struggling Manica Diamonds U19.
Away on the road, the log leaders needed a win to cement their stop and possible promotion to the Premier Soccer League but could not find their way past a stubborn Manica Diamond U19 team.
The visitors went 1 up in the first-half thanks to a goal by Nicholas Muchadeyi. After the break, the visitors controlled much of the game but could not find the back of the net and conceded to the home side who played the game like it was a cup final game.
With only 4 games remaining of the season, FC Wangu Mazodze find themselves in a tricky situation as the difference between 1st and 4th is a mere 2 points.
Speaking after the game, FC Wangu Mazodze spokesperson Sukuoluhle Ndlovu bemoaned the disappointing result saying it was not the result they wanted.
“It is not the result that we were looking forward to as we wanted a win, now we look forward to the remaining 4 games which are a must win for us. We are going to work hard to ensure promotion of the team into the premier soccer league,”Ndlovu said.
FC Wangu Mazodze are aiming to become the first team from Masvingo City to secure Premier Soccer League promotion since Masvingo United over a decade ago, and this requires them to win all 4 remaining games.
Masvingo United earned 3 vital points as they scrapped past Grayham at home to lift them up to 9th on log standings. The win came after a poor run of form which saw Masvingo United drop to the relegation zone threat.

MASVINGO – Four Masvingo women from Machaka village in Chief Charumbira area were sentenced to combined 12 months imprisonment by Masvingo Magistrate Ivy Jaona after they were found in possessing dagga (mbanje).
The four, Aletha Svonono (26), Pauline Makosi (41), Resta Rutoro (37) and Memory Svonono (30) were found guilty of possessing 45 twists of dagga (mbanje) and were sentenced to a total 12 months.
Jaona, however, suspended four months on condition of good behavior and that the convicted do not commit a similar offense for the next five years. Effectively they will serve 280 hours each of community service at Coronation Centre.
It is the State’s case as presented by Tichaona Chakavarika that on October 9, 2023 detectives and Police Intelligence members were on an operation named ‘No to drugs and substance abuse’ and were tipped that the accused persons were dealing selling dagga at Manyama business Centre.
The State told the court that the police proceeded to Manyama business Centre where they approached the four accused and recovered 45 twists with a total value of USD$32.
Passing the sentence, magistrate Jaona said the accused persons’ conduct was derailing government’s efforts to curb drug and substance abuse in the country.
The accused persons, who were represented by advocate Knowledge Mabvuure of Chihambakwe law chambers pleaded guilty to the charges, and begged for leniency.
The defence lawyer told the court that the accused were sole providers for their children back home. One of the women spent days in custody with her seven months baby before they appeared in court.

Social norms, social media deterring women from politics

Beverly Bizeki/ Perpetua Murungweni

Reviews from female politicians and women’s organisations after the just ended elections have shown that social norms is still one of the major setbacks in women’s political participation across the country with the number of women decreasing time and again in high positions of power despite interventions by government through proportional representations.
Speaking during a post-election engagement meeting for female politicians and journalists hosted by Gender and Media Connect, women said being a woman contributed to the disadvantage of women in politics.
Zanu PF National Executive member and Masvingo Proportional Representative Auxcilia Dhanzi said women face challenges during campaigning period and often required to perform wifely or motherly duties at the same time they are anticipated to grow their political careers.
“In politics there is campaigning and there are times when you are required to be out campaigning while you leave your husband and children which is at times difficult.
“There is also a belief that women who rise to take political positions are a result of affairs with the male leaders in their respective political parties which is not always the case and that hinders women participation in politics,” said Dhanzi.
On social media she said there was need for positive media coverage of women saying negative publicity was not only costing individuals in politics but their whole life as well as their parties.
“As we are grappling with the issues of disinformation and misinformation, negative media coverage on women in politics does not only affect the candidate as a person, but it affects the nation, her party and her position.
“I urge you all journalists to promote women who are participating in politics in your work through positive coverage so that you motivate and inspire other women who want to take leadership positions,” said Dhanzi.
Women Coalition of Zimbabwe Masvingo Chapter Coordinator Blessing Chimombo said women’s political participation was hindered by lack of resources as some depend on their husbands financially and due to the patriarchal nature of the society their families dissuade them from taking part in politics.
“In most cases women do not have resources for campaigning as compared to their male counterparts, some women depend on their spouses financially which makes it difficult for them to acquire resources for campaigning.
“In other cases women lack support to such an extent that some are told they cannot use their spouse’s family name to contest in elections hence the low numbers of women contesting for political positions,” said Chimombo.
Chimombo said women are criticized on social media that’s why they are active mainly through campaigning for men but are scared taking positions themselves.
“Women participate more in the pre-election period campaigning than in the election period and during campaigning processes most of them do not hold influential positions because they are scared to be bullied on social media.
“Women are bullied on social media and are body shamed for example Linda Masarira was told that her body does not fit that of a leader,” said Chimombo.
Speaking at the same meeting freelance female journalist Hazvinei Mwanaka said social media unlike mainstream media was also dissuading women from participating in politics through disseminating incorrect information about women who are in politics.
“A lot needs to be done in order to portray female politicians in a positive way. Mainstream media is competing with social media, and in mainstream media there are a lot of considerations when covering stories unlike social media where people are free to attack and name call women.
“A classic example is how the recently appointed Minister of ICT Tatenda Mavetera was accused of having slept her way up to the post,” said Mwanaka.
Mwanaka said social media was promoting gender disinformation that was affecting women’s participation in politics mainly because of fake and negative stories that circulates on social media and people don’t want to be associated with someone portrayed negatively.
“Gender disinformation affects the participation of young women in public spaces, it also undermines women’s credibility and become obstacles to their electoral success.
“Gender disinformation affects the self-esteem of women in politics and public spaces and if one loses self-esteem it means one has lost the power to fight for what she wants,” said Mwanaka.
In Masvingo City Council however there has been a little improvement in the participation of women which has seen the local authority getting two female councilors who got in through the ballot while three got in through women’s quota to make them five.
The Province also has a female member of parliament, Naledi Maunganidze representing the youth quota.

Beverly Bizeki

Faking mental illness failed to save Masvingo Sisk murder suspect and serial robber who was sentenced to 22 years behind bars by Masvingo regional magistrate Bishard Chineka.
Tafadzwa Kanengoni (39) popularly known as Soda Water who resides in Tembwe Street in Aphiri made headlines after shooting and killing a local business person and went on to he faked madness in court saying he was being stung by bees and pretended to be chasing them away.
During one trial session that all he wanted was sadza and his eagles despite going for medical tests which proved he was mentally fine.

MASVINGO – Soccer loving fans have hailed the social soccer league Masvingo Organized Social Soccer League (MOSSL) for contributing towards fighting social ills in Masvingo urban.
The league, which has over 18 teams drawn from mostly high density areas, has managed to keep the youths occupied by playing soccer thereby abstaining from drug and substance abuse as well as other ills.
The league also has teams from institutions such as ZRP, Great Zimbabwe University (GZU) and Chibuku FC which is a big endorsement.
Taruvinga Mutangiranwa also known as Tango the league secretary general of MOSSL said one of the objectives of the league apart from socializing is to ensure that youths have something to occupy themselves so that they don’t end up abusing drugs or stealing from their neighborhood.
“Our social league shields Masvingo residents from community harms like murder, drug abuse, stealing, fighting to mention a few, as it brings the people together with one sole purpose to enjoy the game,” said Mutangiranwa.
Mutangiranwa said the league is also focused on creating cordial relationships within Masvingo residents as the social league is viewed as a one big extended family.
He also said we encourage the residents to come and have some time with their families on Saturdays to enjoy their weekends at different grounds like Mamutse Stadium, Mucheke Arena B, Don Bosco Primary ground, Masvingo Polytechnic ground, and Victoria High ground from 3.00pm when matches kickoff.
