ZIFA Eastern Region Division 1 log leaders FC Wangu Mazodze had their hopes of securing promotion into Zimbabwe’s top flight Premier Soccer League in jeopardy after they were held to a disappointing 1 all draw to struggling Manica Diamonds U19.
Away on the road, the log leaders needed a win to cement their stop and possible promotion to the Premier Soccer League but could not find their way past a stubborn Manica Diamond U19 team.
The visitors went 1 up in the first-half thanks to a goal by Nicholas Muchadeyi. After the break, the visitors controlled much of the game but could not find the back of the net and conceded to the home side who played the game like it was a cup final game.
With only 4 games remaining of the season, FC Wangu Mazodze find themselves in a tricky situation as the difference between 1st and 4th is a mere 2 points.
Speaking after the game, FC Wangu Mazodze spokesperson Sukuoluhle Ndlovu bemoaned the disappointing result saying it was not the result they wanted.
“It is not the result that we were looking forward to as we wanted a win, now we look forward to the remaining 4 games which are a must win for us. We are going to work hard to ensure promotion of the team into the premier soccer league,”Ndlovu said.
FC Wangu Mazodze are aiming to become the first team from Masvingo City to secure Premier Soccer League promotion since Masvingo United over a decade ago, and this requires them to win all 4 remaining games.
Masvingo United earned 3 vital points as they scrapped past Grayham at home to lift them up to 9th on log standings. The win came after a poor run of form which saw Masvingo United drop to the relegation zone threat.
