Chiredzi residents fume over ‘corrupt’ stands sales

‘…elites buying council land for
sale at premium prices’

Tendai Mbede

CHIREDZI– Chiredzi residents have raised
alarm over the unfair distribution of stands by Chiredzi Town Council; saying
the distribution processes favor the elites, TellZim can report.

Chiredzi Town Council recently
held a 2021 budget highlight meeting at the council’s boardroom, where resident
association were invited to deliberate on the 2021 budget.

Speaking during the meeting,
Chiredzi Residents and Ratepayers Association (CHIRRA) member, Lloyd Sithole
argued that there was need to formulate a policy guiding the distribution of
stands.

He said this will prevent the
creation of an empire by elites some of whom are in the habit of reselling the
same property at exorbitant figures to the next home seeker..

“There is need to formulate
a policy which guides on the distribution of stands. The rich guys are
benefitting more than the general residents, who will later sell the same stand
which he/she was sold at a reasonable price with an exaggerated figure,” said
Sithole

United Chiredzi Residents and
Ratepayers Association (UCHIRRA) advocacy officer Bernard Dhachi highlighted
the need to raise cession fee to punish those who just purchase land for resell
in a bid to end land corruption in Chiredzi.

“There is growing corruption on
stand purchases in our council. I suggest we raise cession fee to an amount
more than US$1 000 in 2021 to punish those who purchase stands for resell,”
said Dhachi.

Council was urged to consider all
its residents including those living with disabilities whenever resources are
being distributed.

There was gross corruption on the
newly developed Medium Density stands (Melbourne Park) as council officials and
councilors allegedly sold stands with US dollars before instructing the
beneficiary to pay a paltry RTGS$35 000.00 to the local authority after paying
an admission fee of US$4 500.00 which will be shared among the entire food
chain.

Mwenezi youth in Pad a Girl Child campaign

…says Covud-19 has increased suffering among girls in amrginalised communities

 Cephas Shava

MWENEZI – As part
of efforts to contribute to the wellbeing of underprivileged girls, a
20-year-old girl last week launched her Pad a Girl Child campaign by
distributing some sanitary pads to selected girls from local primary and
secondary schools in Ward 18, Mwenezi East.

Sakhile Mswela said she was motivated by the desire to
improve menstrual hygiene among girls from underprivileged and
not-so-privileged backgrounds.

Mswela said the Covid-19 pandemic and the resultant lockdown had worsoned poverty levels in traditionally needy communities, making the need to intervent for the sake of the girl child even more pressing.

Selected pupils from Sacred Heart High School, Rutenga Primary
School, G and N Mission secondary and primary schools gathered at Mswela’s
homestead at Rutenga growth point on December 15 where they received the
donations.

Mswela, who is pursuing a diploma in social work, said the
girl child in Mwenezi and other rural areas suffered immense inconveniences and
pressure during their monthly periods due to lack of proper sanitary wear.

“This is my first time getting involved in work of this
nature and I am pleased to do it. I have started by working with local schools
with the hope that by early next year, I will expand to schools which are in
the resettlement areas of the district. It is my vision to make this initiative
bigger and better

“The Covid-19 pandemic has made many familes even more vulnerable to socila pressures and such necessities as sanitary wear for the girl child is increasingly getting viewed as an expendable luxury,” said Mswela.

She said she realised that many rural school girls missed
school for many days in a month as they did not have proper sanitary wear to
sit in class with confidence.

She urged women and girls to take the lead in uplifting each
other so that men themselves would emulate them in support of a more just
society.

G and N Secondary School head Blessed Chirove, who was the
guest speaker at the launch, urged school girls to be strong and not let
anything stand in their way to success.

The girls were also give some lessons on how to properly
handle sanitary wear as well as how to properly dispose of it once it has been
used.

Chivi rapist blames evil spirits for attacks on two school children

CHIREDZI – A 22-year-old
man who pleaded guilty before Chiredzi Regional Magistrate Judith Zuyu begged
the court to spare him jail time and give him a fine instead, claiming that he
was possessed by evil spirits when he committed two offences, TellZim can
report.

However, the magistrate went on to slap him with a 20-year-long
jail term before suspending one year for five years on condition of the
rape-convict’s good behavior.

Tawanda Makono was last week convicted on six counts of rape
after a full trial during which he pleaded guilty.

The State, represented by Noel Muranda, alleged that on
October 27, 2020, Makono raped a 17-year-old girl twice in the bush in Mutuka
village.

On December 09, he raped a 20-year-old womann – whom he
accosted as she walked back home from school in Ruvengo village – four times.

All this happened during the 16 Days of Activism against
Gender Based Violence (GBV) which ran from November 25.

Makono, who was found guilty at his own plea, pleaded with
the court to consider payment of a fine as he alleged to have been possessed by
evil spirits.

Makwarimba, Rugeje faction violent, says Jorum Gumbo

Zanu PF politburo member Jorum Gumbo,
who was in charge of Masvingo District Coordinating Committee (DCC) elections held
on December 05 – 06, has said a faction allegedly fronted by senior party
member Clemence Makwarimba, former national political commissar Retired Lt Gen
Engelbert Rugeje and Josaya Hungwe employed violent tactics in a desperate bid
to win the elections.

The faction rallied behind Trust Mugabe
for the position of Masvingo DCC chairperson but he lost dismally to Tawanda
Dube.

The Makwarimbas; including Clemence’s son
Phainos, Rugeje and Hungwe are alleged to have been pushing for a rerun but all
was in vain as the politburo approved the results of all the seven districts of
Masvingo province.

Gumbo told TellZim News that there were
some centres in Masvingo and Chiredzi districts that did not vote and he recommended
a re-run for those centres only.

“Generally, the elections were free and
fair though there were some incidences here and there. There were five centres
which failed to vote in Masvingo district and 17 in Chiredzi district.

“Masvingo district was torn between the
people who supported Trust Mugabe and those who supported Tawanda Dube for the post
of chairperson. It was unfortunate that the Mugabe camp was very violent and at
some point I threatened to disqualify them,” said Gumbo.

“The Mugabe team was always at the
provincial command centre shouting obscenities and I advised them to leave and
go to the people. They chased away a team which had come from Gutu to conduct
elections at one polling centre. The Gutu team ran for their lives and left
ballot boxes which were later collected by the police and brought to us,” Gumbo
added.

In Masvingo, there were petitions written
by disgruntled members from Zaka and Masvingo districts who were pushing for a
re-run of the election but the politburo, chaired by President Emmerson Mnangagwa
has since shut the doors on any possible re-runs in the province.

When contacted for comment over the
alleged violence, Rugeje angrily said TellZim News must get comment from the
very people who aligned him to the Mugabe faction.

“Why are you calling me? I am at home
with my family. Get comment from the person who gave you that story. You are disturbing
me I want to sleep,” said Rugeje when he was contacted for comment around past
7 in the evening.

Due to the disputed results, sources
say that there is now a fierce rivalry between the Makwarimbas and the
Chadzamira factions.

The Makwarimba faction is said to be the
one which authored the re-run narrative saying the people were robbed of their
right to democratically-elect their leadership.

Phainos, who is provincial deputy
political commissar, told TellZim News that there was no factionalism in Masvingo.

He said people were only asking for a chance
to participate in free and fair elections.

“All people did was ask for a free and
fair elections. Now they are attacking my person and my father for telling them
the truth. All of a sudden they want to be more Lacoste than others. We know
the history of some of them and they were not there when my father was fighting
for Zanu PF,” said Makwarimba.

He added that such transgressions would
cost the party come 2023 elections.

“The scariest thing is to go against
Chadzamira but he should allow his people to decide. I am afraid this will cost
the party come 2023 elections. I am just vocal but I will never plot against
President Mnangagwa,” said Makwarimba.

Covid-19, transport woes and road safety

Upenyu Chaota

At
a time when the country is recording a surge in Covid-19 positive cases and
deaths, public transport operators seem to be complacent and throwing caution
to the wind just to make the dollar while putting the lives of commuters at
risk.

When
the government announced the Covid-19 induced lock down, it came with a lot of
measures and restrictions which didn’t spare the transport sector.

Zimbabwe
United Passengers Company (ZUPCO) was given the sole right to transport
‘essential service providers’ and also those seeking medical attention.

To
board a ZUPCO kombi or bus one had to wear a mask and sanitize and this was a mandatory
measure which the public transport provider was prioritizing.

ZUPCO
was even fumigating the buses consistently during the peak days of the first
wave of the virus.

Two
passengers would share a seat against the usual four in a commuter omnibus and
this was a measure which was aimed at reducing conduct amongst passengers.

As
time progressed and the country recording fewer cases and high recovery rate,
the government was tempted to ease lock down regulations which saw the increased
numbers of commuters.

Easing
of the lock down overwhelmed ZUPCO and prompted the resurfacing of illegal
pirate kombis and taxis commonly known as mushika-shika who are always after
profit and maximize every inch of space of their vehicles.

High
recovery rates recorded saw the public transport provider and the public
forgetting about the dangers of Covid-19, failing to wear face masks and ZUPCO
operators now don’t even sanitize their passengers.

A
visit by TellZim News crew to some of the pick-up points in Masvingo revealed
that conductors and inspectors no longer bother to sanitize people or ask them
why they are not wearing masks.

The
operators themselves including the drivers are now too lazy to properly wear
their masks.

However,
with the lock down now eased to the lowest level, it is now a case of road safety
and health of the commuters which is now on the line as they are being packed in
ZUPCO buses with an excess of over 30 people standing.

When
contacted for comment, ZUPCO Masvingo Manager Wiseman Ziweni said they were
providing operators with sanitizers and called upon the public to notify
authorities when they come across those not administering sanitizers.

“We
are giving the operators sanitizers so probably they are relaxing on duty. If
you see someone who doesn’t sanitize commuters please inform us and we will
address that issue,” said Ziweni.

However,
passengers feel they are being put at risk and are demanding that every
transport operator joins an association of their own choice.

Passengers
Association of Zimbabwe (PAZ) president Tafadzwa Goliati said the ZUPCO
transport system was unsustainable and called on the authorities to put in
place an open market to ease transport woes.

“ZUPCO
is overwhelmed they can’t even provide the buses which are needed to cater for
every passenger.

“What
we want is an open market where everyone uses a vehicle which they want and
that these operators register with an association of their own choice not to be
forced into ZUPCO. We have recorded so many cases of people who are being
mugged and some are even being abused in these overloaded buses which are not
even safe,” said Goliati.

The
transport situation for local routes is dire and some may end up walking while
some fight and jostle to enter a ZUPCO bus to go home after work.

In
Masvingo, residents from Victoria Ranch jostle to get into one bus which was
allocated to them as other small kombi operators refuse to ply that route due
to the state of dilapidated roads in that area.

An
open space opposite to Glow Petroleum service station is a hive of activity after
working hours when men and women from Victoria Ranch tussle for transport.

The
transport blues always leave women vulnerable since they are overpowered by men
and some of them end up walking long distances home.

On
these instances, the public forgets about the deadly Covid-19 and it is this
kind of setup where people can transmit the virus to each other.

Local
cases are being recorded daily and the effects of loosening the lock down are
being felt with some already calling for a tighter lock down, ZUPCO to increase
their fleet and also for the enforcement of preventive measures in public
transport.

The
government is sticking to its stance of ZUPCO being the only licensed public
transport provider in local routes and that anyone who wants to offer service should
register with ZUPCO first.

Safety
of passengers is being trivialized and one can imagine what will happen to
passengers boarding an overloaded ZUPCO bus with over 100 passengers.

The
public transport system needs to be carefully monitored so that the Covid-19
regulations are properly enforced.

Chivaviro family rescues Mutare man with wheelchair

Bernard Mhlanga got a new wheelchair courtesy of Mutare Prayer Group

Progress Chaya

MUTARE – Reverend
Tagarepi Chivaviro and his family this week donated a wheelchair to a
38-year-old paraplegic who for many years had serious trouble moving around.

TellZim
News reported on Bernard Mhlanga’s plight back in January, helping to raise
awareness on the man who would often drag himself on his backside from Hobhouse
high density suburb to the CBD where he begged for alms.

By
then, Mlambo had to fend for his pregnant wife, who has since given birth, and
three children.

Mlambo
often sits on the pavement close to TM Pick n Pay supermarket in the CBD for
the purposes of begging.

“I
am pleased that my story has reached kind-hearted and generous people. I am
pleased with this new wheelchair which will help to make my movements easier. If
you are not mobile, your chances of putting food on the table are slim,” said a
delighted Mlambo.

He
said he hoped to get a better wheelchair in the future; one which is equipped
with an electric mortar.

“That
is my hope right  but for now I will make
the best of what I have as I look forward to better things that I know will
surely come. An automated wheelchair will remove the need to find somebody to
push the wheelchair every time I want to move around,” said Mlambo.

In
his remarks after making the donation, Chivaviro, who mobilised his Mutare
prayer group to support the cause, said it was fulfilling for his family to be
able to make a difference in such needy situations.

“Our
local members as well as those in the diaspora made this possible. It is good
to go beyond the usual speech and worship the Lord through deeds,” he said.

New home for Copota’s old, blind couple

0

TellZim
Reporter

ZIMUTO – An old and blind couple
staying at Copota School for the Blind with their five grandchildren whose
plight TellZim reported on back in August, are now receiving some regular food
parcels from well-wishers, some of whom are also helping them to build their
rural home.

 TellZim reported that the
couple had on many occasions had wild fruits matohwe and masekesa for supper as
they lived a life of severe lack and poverty.

Julius Chiwanza (60) and his wife
Oripa Chiwanza (62) now say their life had improved a bit as people from
different walks of life were now extending assistance to them.

“Our lives have changed in a way
that is overwhelming to me and my family. I cannot thank the well-wishers
enough for the help we are receiving. We are now having proper and regular
meals every day,” she said.

She also confirmed that their homestead
which they had struggled to complete for lack of resources was now almost ready
after some Good Samaritans offered help after reading the story of their
struggles.

Chiwanza, who used to work in the
school’s furniture-making workshop, was supposed to leave the school compound
with his family when he retired in 2018 but they have since overstayed by close
to three years now as they had nowhere else to go.

The family could not move out
because the homestead they were trying to develop on a piece of land allocated
to them could not be completed in time due to resource constraints.

They sold much of their household
property and utensils in order to get money to buy building materials needed
but it was still not enough to do all the required work.

“We are very happy that our house is
almost complete and soon we will be moving out to stay there. We are also
grateful to the mission which allowed us to stay here even though our time was up.

 “They understood our situation and
gave us enough time for us to finish building our house,” Oripa said.

Domestic animals turn highway into deadly zone

A cow crosses the Masvingo-Beitbridge Road in Mwenezi

…3-month-old baby survives dies
as mother dies in recent accident

 Cephas Shava

MWENEZI – A three-month-old baby boy miraculously survived a
horrific car accident which tragically claimed the life of his mother right the
spot after the vehicle by which they were traveling hit a cow along the
Masvingo-Beitbridge highway.

The accident occurred on December
01 at Mateke turnoff along the Mwenezi district stretch of the Masvingo-Beitbridge
highway. It claimed the life of Ulita Mpofu but her baby boy was spared, and he
was pulled from the vehicle wreckage with no scratch.

The accident was responded to by
Rutenga traffic police, with some sources saying Omac Guzha, the driver of the
3.5-tonne truck which was traveling towards Rutenga from Beitbridge with seven
passengers on board, was to blame for the tragedy.

Guzha, who survived the accident
with minor injuries, said he rammed into a herd of cattle right in the middle
of the road just after a haulage truck which was coming from the opposite
direction had beamed its headlamps into his face.

“One passenger got seriously
injured with the rest of us escaping with minor injuries. The mother of a
3-month-old boy is the one who died on the spot but the baby survived. My
eyesight had been affected when the driver of the oncoming truck flashed his
headlamps into my face.

“He did not even give me any
danger signal of what was immediately ahead of me.  I did my level best to avoid hitting the
cattle but I still crashed into one of them and the vehicle veered off the road,”
said Guzha.

He denied accusations that he had
acted recklessness on the road and that he was over-speeding when the accident
occurred.

TellZim News contacted Traffic
Safety Council of Zimbabwe (TSCZ) acting director of operations Ernest Muchena
to get his views on road safety this festive season.

Muchena acknowledged that the
Masvingo-Beitbridge highway, especially the Chivi-Mwenezi stretch, has
experienced some of the worst road traffic accidents caused by both human error
and the presence of livestock on the road.

“Since Zimbabwe is a cattle
country, we urge drivers to exercise extreme caution when driving this festive
season and ever after. Villagers and farmers who live along the highway are
urged to pen their cattle every day and make sure they do not allow them to be
on the road.

“Under the country’s road traffic
regulations, it is an offence for people to let their domestic animals stray
along roads such as the Beitbridge-Masvingo highway,” said Muchena.

Carcasses of domestic animals hit
by vehicles are not an uncommon sight on this road which has over the years
created orphans, widows and widowers.

Many of the accident occur during
the night or in the rain when visibility is low, making it difficult for
speeding drivers to control their vehicles in face of imminent danger, and to minimise
the impact of accidents.

Some farmers who live close to
the highway feel that there is need for greater road traffic law enforcement
along the highway.

“As farmers, we take part of
the blame for the stray animals that cause accidents along the road but we also
feel that law enforcement is not adequate. Those responsible for enforcing the
law seem to be sleeping on duty and we feel more could be done to improve road
safety,” said local farmer Juliet Moyo.

She said culprits almost always
seem to know how to navigate their way out of trouble as police officers were
more than eager to let them go if bribes were paid.

Rutenga businessman donates fuel to Neshuro Hospital

Mabhena (right) with Neshuro Hospital staff including acting administrator Tapera Mahlangano (second from right

Cephas Shava

MWENEZI – Rutenga based
businessman Simbarashe Mpofu Mabhena has come in handy and donated 100 litres
of fuel at Neshuro District Hospital which has been having difficulties
sourcing fuel for their ambulance services.

Mabhena
delivered 100 litres of diesel fuel to the public health institution last week
and promised to work with the hospital in his philanthropic endeavours.

“There
was a time when a person died because the ambulance had no fuel. The ambulance
is very critical because it is responsible for ferrying people to the hospital
and doing transfers.

“It is
our collective role to make sure that we help when we can. I have started with
the little I have and I hope someone out there will be inspired so that we help
our hospital.

“It is
my hope that I will keep working with Neshuro District Hospital so that it
remains offering services to our people,” said Mabhena.

Neshuro
District Hospital acting administrator, Tapera Mahlangano, expressed gratitude
over Mabhena’s helping hand to the medical facility.

“We
are really grateful for the generous gesture and the donation comes at the
right time especially as we are approaching the festive season where there is a
high demand for ambulance services owing to an increased number of road traffic
accidents.

“Fuel
is one of the many challenges we face as an institution and we are glad that
Mabhena has given us some fuel which can enable us to run some operations,”
said Mahlangano.

Mahlangano
said the hospital also faces acute water shortages, dilapidated infrastructure
and there is also need to beef up the ambulance fleet to enhance response.

Vulgarity a stepping stone to success for females?

                                                 Evangelist Mazhara
Clayton Shereni
Going
down the memory lane taking a few notes from the roots of our African culture,
a woman was not supposed to just speak recklessly and was supposed to “cover up”
her body and nudity or vulgarity was morally unacceptable.
It
was a taboo for women to be seen half naked by any man and if she was seen, she
would be labeled a concubine or a woman of loose morals.
Many believe that the coming in of digital
media has left a trail of destruction on the African culture and has eroded the
aspect of Ubuntu especially on the African young women.
We
have copied and pasted western ways especially on dressing and we are never shy
to walk half naked even in front of in-laws.
However,
the raging fight to exonerate women from being viewed as sexual objects still
continues, but it seems as if young females are not helping for they are seen
promoting issues of sexuality.
Many
young women are no longer willing to work hard to become popular and seem to have
found a new way of gaining fame by posing for the camera in birthday suits and
speak unprintables.
A
few years ago, a relatively unknown young woman, Pokelo Nare hogged the
limelight after a leaked sex tape allegedly picturing her and Hip-Hop star,
Desmond Chideme aka Stunner surfaced on the internet.
However,
as if it was going to denigrate her, Nare has lived to become one of the most
popular Zimbabwean socialites and “has not” lost dignity, rather she has struck
many deals with reputable companies to market their products and is now
commonly known as “queen of swagger”.
Although
it might be argued that the sex tape leak wasn’t premeditated, it seems this
has become a life changing move for many young females who want to make a
breakthrough in life as they are seemingly engaging in vulgarities.
In
the past few months men have enjoyed free eye satisfaction as songstress Vimbai
Zimuto is making headlines for the same wrong reasons after pictures of her showing
off her nude body were all over social media.
After
that incident the young woman seems to be establishing a name for herself in
the music industry and recently held a press conference where she said she was
selling her nude pictures privately with proceeds going to her Huya Uone Trust.
However,
the story of young women capitalizing on vulgarity will be incomplete without
mentioning popular dancers Beverly ‘Bev’ Sibanda and Noleen Sifelani aka Zoey who
rose to stardom for dancing at gigs while nude to the much delight of men who
constitute a large number of their fan base.
The
dancers seem to be earning a living out of it and both have been conferred
awards by the Dancers Association of Zimbabwe (DAZ) for their erotic dance
moves.
A
few months ago one Lorraine Guyo of the “Ndinyengeiwo” fame has grown to become
a household name in the comedy fraternity with her comedy skits trending on
social media and has struck a lot of endorsement deals which she markets during
her skits.
After
the leaked “Ndinyengeiwo” video, Guyo came out to claiming that she received thousands
of marriage proposals from men from all walks of life in and outside the
country.
In
2016, nude picture of Zimdancehall star Souljah Love and his ex-wife Bounty
Lisa surfaced on the internet and the Ndini
Uya-Uya
hitmaker openly said he did not owe anyone any apology over the
leakage.
The
same year saw another artist Enock Guni aka Nox nude pictures found their way
into the public domain after his bitter girlfriend reportedly sent the pictures
to his wife but this seems to have had no negative impact to the singer’s
career.
He
has been widely touted as Urban Groove’s last man standing as the genre seems
to have been eroded by the coming in of the Zimdancehall crusade.
The
same issue has not spared other African countries as women from other countries
are also involved in the ‘immoral’ stunt.
South
Africa’s dancer Zodwa Rebecca
Libram
popularly known as Zodwa Wabantu has torched controversy with her
stance of dancing without under garments during her shows in night clubs.
Women
advocacy groups who spoke to TellZim News castigated the ‘immorality’ and lack
of self-respect being shown by these women.
Women
Coalition of Zimbabwe (WCoZ) Masvingo chapter chairperson Joyce Mhungu said it
was disheartening to see young women degrading themselves especially in public
spaces where they are expected to show good morals.
“The
pressure of finding quick solutions in a competitive world has given the rise
to trend of fame through vulgarity. The need to become a celebrity has led to
moral decay and drug usage has also blunted the performers conscience, having
no self-respect and respect for the community” said Mhungu.
However,
Mhungu blamed the “misogynist” society as the root cause of the ill behavior
being portrayed by young women as they try to break away from poverty.
“Our
society, though equipped with laws to educate both sexes, pressure of home care
fall on the female side leaving males to focus on their careers. Focus on
homecare and male pleasure has covertly left females as sex objects,” said
Mhungu.
Women
on a Mission Organization (WOAMO) founder, Evangelist Mazhara said her
organization is on a mission to mentor women to live according to the Bible and
portray a good picture in the community through their good character
“We
take focus on the norms and values following what is inscribed in the bible and
as for my team which I mentor I encourage them to show charisma in whatever
they do and we should initiate change in the society and our characters must
show that we have God in us,” said Mazhara.
However,
others argued that cyber bullying is another major factor which has contributed
to this problem and has given the wrong perception about young women in the
society.
The
issue has left a lot to be desired as the western culture which has infiltrated
the African continent causing cultural decadence and giving a rise to indecent
exposure which promotes vulgarity.
