donates sanitary wear to several schools

CHIREDZI – Chiredzi West Junior Member of
Parliament (MP), Takudzwa Clever, together with pupils from South Eastern
College (SEC) have donated 316 sanitary pads to disadvantaged children in
several local schools.
At
an event held at Ratidzo Primary School, Childline and diversified retail and
hospitality group Pote Holdings supported the Junior MP’s efforts by donating 316
more sanitary pads.
The
event was graced by Chiredzi West Member of Parliament (MP) Farai Musikavanhu.
Some
SEC pupils, with the active encouragement of Clever’s mentor and teacher Lena
Siwela, managed to save money from their meagre resources which they then used
to buy the sanitary wear for distribution at 16 primary and secondary schools.
In
his speech, Clever said the girl child and women bore the severest effects of
poverty, lack of health care and proper education.
“We
are here today to observe and give respect to the girl child who is the most
vulnerable group in society. Girls and women often bear the severest consequences
of poverty, lack of health and education, climate change and other inequality.
“Many
people in the educational sector say educating girls is the right and smart
thing to do, taking care of a girl child from a tender age is a benefit for
future generations. It is in deep pain that the girl child is the word bright
but still struggling to see the light,” said Clever.
He
said the girl child should be given good care as she endures them most pain and
enjoys the least benefits.
“Girls
who will become mothers endure all the pain in the biological production
processes yet they enjoy less benefits thereof,” Clever said.
In
his own address, Musikavanhu applauded Clever’s initiative of mobilising
resources for disadvantaged female colleagues in the constituency.
“Interventions
like this one, facilitated by our Junior MP with the help of his teachers and
colleagues, are very important. Some children are failing to attend lessons
just because of sanitary issues. I want to applaud that,” said Musikavanhu.

Mashava’s Disso compound sitting on health time bomb

An unidentified man fetches raw water from a leaking GZU pipe in Mashava

Brighton Chiseva

MASHAVA – Disso and Bere
locations in Mashava area are sitting on a cholera time bomb as water and
sanitation problems continue to worsen at a time the country is facing a
cholera outbreak.
Disso location,
with a total of 208 households, is the most affected as the area does not have
even a single functional toilet following the closure of the four overflowing Blair
toilets.
Masvingo Rural
District Council (RDC) Ward 5 councillor, Aleta Makomeke lamented the crisis,
saying she was working with the local legislator Ezra Chadzamira, who has also
been appointed Minister of State for Masvingo provincial Affairs, to sink
boreholes for the people.
“There is a
serious crisis at Disso, the few toilets which were there are now full and
people have resorted to using the bush yet there is no running water to wash
hands. The MP is working to provide boreholes through a government programme
which is underway,” said Makomeke.
She said the situation
needed urgent attention and called upon the corporate world to join hands
before the outbreak of diseases.
“I am calling
upon the corporate world, churches and non-governmental organisations and
individual well-wishers to help us with movable toilets and water bowsers
before something really bad happens,” she said.
Christian Care, a
non-governmental organisation (NGO), recently visited the area to assess the
situation after Makomeke presented the dire state of affairs in the area to the
Masvingo Civil Protection Committee.
The
organisation’s programmes officers, Andrew Chari and Brian Mangundu recently toured
Disso and Bere townships where they urged people to at least dig holes to bury
their stool when they go to relieve themselves in the bush until normal water
supplies are restored.
They also
promised to bring water purification tablets to the area for people to add to
the raw water they get from a Great Zimbabwe University (GZU) pipe running to
Mashava campus.
People living in
Disso are mainly immigrant labourers and their families who came from Malawi
and Zambia several decades ago when the now closed Shabani Mashava Mines were
still thriving.

Women Breaking Barriers: Meet Ruth Mutopo, young commercial pilot

                                                                            Ruth Mutopo

Charles Maregere

Inspired by both Captain Irene Koki Mutungi of Kenya Airways and Captain Chipo Matimba of Air Zimbabwe, Ruth did her aviation training with Fly Africa Flight Academy in Harare.
“Self-development of women can build a better Rome so young girls should not feel discouraged and neither should they look down upon themselves. Rather, they should be strong and assertive,” Mutopo says.
“Kunewe mwanasikana ndinoda kukukurudzira kuti paunoverenga, verenga uine tariro, verenga uchiziva kuti ramangwana riri mumaoko ako, verenga uchiziva kuti hapana chinonzi hachigoneke, zvese zvinogoneka, wakasununguka uye gutsikana kuti unogona kuita chese chaunoda kuva muhupenyu hwako saka dzidza nesimba,” she says.
One of the reasons why people cannot venture into the field is because of lack of experience: A pilot needs at least 250 hours of flight experience to earn a commercial pilot licence.
Though Mutopo flies fixed wing planes she says pilots who fly helicopters must constantly look out for trees, bridges, power lines, transmission towers, and other dangerous obstacles. Regardless of the type of aircraft, all pilots must monitor warning devices that detect sudden shifts in wind patterns.
For all but small aircraft, two pilots usually make up the cockpit crew. Generally, the most experienced pilot, the captain, is in command and supervises all other crew members. The co-pilot often called the first officer, shares flight duties with the captain. These duties include communicating with air traffic controllers, monitoring instruments, and steering the plane.
High costs of pilot training programs are still the main hindrance for most young girls dreaming of being pilots.
Inspired by Sir Richards Benson (Virgin Airlines owner), Mutopo’s favourite planes are private jets with Bombardier and Gulfstream being her favourite models while the Philippines and Thailand are her favourite destinations.

Uncle Jaunda, was on Friday, September 21, acquitted of rape.
The Gwendo gweGweru hit-maker
cum Hevoi FM radio presenter and talk show host made news headlines in February
when he was arrested and taken to court.
He was facing charges of
raping Vongai Jaunda (22), a close relative living in Mudzamba village in Chief
Zimuto as defined in Section 65(1) of the Criminal Law (Codification and Reform
Act) Chapter 9:23.
It was the State’s case

raped Vongai.
Uncle Jaunda, who was
represented by Charles Ndlovu of Ndlovu and Hwacha, denied the charges.
The court had refused to
put him on remand and on passing judgement, magistrate Dambudzo Malunga noted
lack of evidence and that the report was not timeously made among other
reasons.

Look after my children, rapist asks victim in court

ZVISHAVANE – Asking a favour from your victim! A 42-year-old
Zvishavane man who was arraigned before magistrate Shepherd Mnjanja on charges
of raping his biological sister asked her to look after his children when he
gets jailed.
The man, who cannot be named to
protect the identity of his victim, pleaded guilty to the crime as defined in
Section 65 of the Criminal Law (Codification and Reform) Act Chapter 9:23.
It was State’s case that sometime
in March, the accused went to his sister’ homestead in Pasira Village under
Chief Mazvihwa in the evening at around 19:00 hrs.
He asked for a traditional
fermented marula brew called mukumbi from the complainant.
After taking the alcohol, he forced
his sister onto the ground and had sexual intercourse with her without her
consent.
The complainant later reported
her ordeal to her other brother who then advised her to report the matter to
the police, leading to the arrest of the suspect.
After learning that rape charges
had been pressed on him, the suspect asked the complainant to look after his
children during his imprisonment.
“I don’t know why you did
this to me, I am asking you just to take care of my children,” he repeated the
plea in court.
The accused was remanded in
custody pending trial at the High Court.

Hosiah Chipanga lambasts new MPs

Lloyd Shunje
MUTARE – Dangamvura-Chikanga losing
parliamentary and musician, Hosiah Chipanga has taken a dig at newly
elected legislators describing them as job seekers who went to parliament for
salaries and personal gains at the expense of the electorate.
Chipanga’s
sentiments comes at a time when the Members of Parliament (MPs) were fighting the
government’s move to stop the purchase of their luxurious vehicles channelling
the resources to the fight against cholera which has so far claimed 49 lives.
Speaking to
TellZim News Chipanga said the MPs only appeared to be representing people
before the elections.
“They only
appear to be representing the people before being elected into office, now that
they are on pay roll, they are no longer leaders but now government workers.
“They can only pay
much attention to their paymaster than to the electorate that was fooled into
believing they would be represented,” said Chipanga.
The Kwachu Kwachu
hit maker lost his parliamentary bid to MDC Alliance’s Prosper Mutseyami.
Chipanga said
the system of paying leaders warrants dereliction of duty and responsibilities
leading to the suffering of the masses.
“Going to
parliament has become a full time job for most MPs if not all. They go there
with their salary in mind and forget why they are there in the first place.
They have decided to play smart by calling what they get as allowances when in
actual fact it’s a salary.
“Most of them
are benchwarmers who only show signs of life when they are being given new cars
and their salaries,” said Chipanga.

Zanu PF lashes out at ‘sell-out’ Masvingo Urban youth

…as party lines up thank you rallies

Upenyu
Chaota
Zanu PF has attacked university and college students
in Masvingo Urban for letting the party down by voting for the MDC Alliance in
the July 30 harmonised elections thereby costing it of total victory in the
province.
Speaking at an inter-district meeting at Masvingo
Polytechnic last Saturday, Zanu PF politburo member and principal director of
the Hebert Chitepo School of Ideology, Munyaradzi Machacha said students were
ungrateful for the ‘quality education’ that Zanu PF was giving them.
“We lost Masvingo Urban to MDC Alliance because of
students at tertiary institutions. They get our quality education and they go
on to betray us. They are the ones who voted for the opposition,” said
Machacha.
Machacha was in charge of the Zanu PF cell verification
process in the province in the run up to the July 30 harmonised elections.
He said despite the minor setback, the ruling party
was now looking forward to the 2023 elections.
Of the 26 parliamentary seats allocated to the
province, Zanu PF lost only one; Masvingo Urban which was won by the youthful
Jacob Nyokanhete of MDC Alliance who beat Zanu PF’s Benjaman Mazarire, a war
veteran.
Machacha said Zanu PF party had now lined up 26 thank
you rallies as a token of appreciation to its supporters.
He said the people had to be thanked for their ‘faith’
in the leadership of President Emmerson Mnangagwa’s.
“Masvingo you did us proud and the President thanks
you. We should now shift our focus towards 2023 elections. But before we do
that, we should do a total of 26 thank you rallies in the province in each
constituency thanking our people for a job well done.
“There is plenty of party regalia in Harare and we
want to distribute it during these thank you rallies. We need to throw a party
for our people so that they get an appreciation of what it is like to identify
themselves with Zanu PF,” said Machacha.
Former Minister of State for Masvingo Provincial
Affairs, Josaya Hungwe said the party should be careful not to let its guard
down or it will be given a knock-out punch.
“Let us guard our party jealously because if we let
our guard down, we will be hijacked like what happened with the G40. Let us
work to protect our legacy that the new dispensation has brought about,” said

Zanu PF ‘smuggled’ money to China for regalia

…ruling party attacks
America for blocking access to proper banking channels

Upenyu
Chaota

The ruling Zanu PF party claims that the United States
of America tried to sabotage their campaign by blocking them from wiring their
transaction to a Chinese firm which printed the party’s regalia until the party
sought ways of circumventing the restrictions and get the money to China without
detection by New York, TellZim News has heard.
Addressing an inter-district meeting last weekend at
Masvingo Polytechnic College recently, Zanu PF politburo member and principal
director of the Hebert Chitepo School of Ideology, Munyaradzi Machacha lashed
out at America for trying to effect regime change hiding behind MDC Alliance
leader, Nelson Chamisa.
It was said that the Chinese firm which printed the
Zanu PF campaign material had refused to release the regalia until they were paid,
a development which caused delays in the arrival of the regalia.
Most, if not all, global financial transactions go
through New York, and are closely monitored by the US treasury department and
CIA which have power to freeze dealings suspected to be involving sanctioned
individuals, organisations, states and terrorist movements.
Flanked by Zanu PF chief whip Pupurai Togarepi and
Senator Josaya Hungwe, Machacha declared that the United States was the real
enemy of the country and should be treated as such in any dealings the country
finds itself in with them.
Machacha narrated how America tried to sabotage and
derail the Zanu PF campaign by making sure that the payment to China failed.
“We are fighting a formidable enemy. America mukono.
Hachisi chana chidoko chaunorova mbama chochema chichimhanya kumakumbo amai
(America is a real giant; it’s not like a child one can easily beat up).
“We had a problem with regalia during our campaigning
period. The regalia was done in China and it was finished in time. The problem
came when we wanted to pay the supplier his money. He said he was not going to release
the regalia until we wired his payment into his account.
“We wired the money and it was hanging for about a
week then it reflected back into our account. We tried wiring the money again
and it spent two weeks suspended before reflecting back into our account.
“President Mnangagwa then thought of other ways of
getting the money to China, avoiding monitoring by the Americans and we
successfully delivered the money and our regalia was released but it was too
late because people had already started voting,” said Machacha.
He said that planes loaded with regalia arrived in the
country late and there were heaps of regalia awaiting distribution at the
party’s headquarters in Harare.
“You should go and tell our people that we have a lot
of regalia in Harare and it is coming. We know our people are not happy but we
will give all our Members of Parliament enough to distribute to their
respective constituencies as we celebrate our victory.
“The issue of regalia left a lot of people dejected
and we had cases where people where fighting to access it. There are plenty of
t-shirts, caps, scarfs and wrapping cloth enough for everyone and ready for
distribution,” said Machacha.
Machacha said the Americans were masters of deception;
they would put a nice face to try and get close and do their mischief.
He said the people of Zimbabwe should be extremely
cautious because America is an enemy that never forgives.
“The enemy which had for long been grabbing us by the
throat seems to be letting go. This will see our economy flowering because the
sanctions they illegally imposed on us will eventually be lifted.
“We will start to experience a better life but let me
warm you Masvingo that this enemy does not forgive. When you date America you
have to go to bed with one eye open because you never know when the enemy may
strike.
“You have to sleep with a weapon under the pillow so
that when the enemy strikes, you will have something with which to defend
yourself. Yes, Chamisa might be our enemy here but the one behind him is the greatest
and most powerful foe we ever had,” said Machacha.
He said the ‘imperialists’ who spread the red carpet for
President Mnagagwa and ‘gave him kisses’ were all wolves in sheep’s clothing,
giving reference to Libya’s fallen dictator Muammar Gaddafi.
“Look what they did to Gaddafi. Libya was flourishing
and the same Americans who pretended to be Gaddafi’s friends killed him. We
need our people to remain united so that we will not give any room to the enemy
to exploit.
“That is the strategy Zanu PF is using. If we have no
enemy within, the enemy outside can do us no harm,” said Machacha.top news
